ICC World Twenty20 - 24th match, Group E

South Africa v India

India won by 37 runs

Hello and welcome to coverage of the South African reply. They need 154 to win and knock India out of this ICC World Twenty20. I'm Anand Vasu, and I'll be calling the first 10 overs of the match, with George Binoy taking over then and seeing the game through to the end.

The players are out on the field now. The Indians come out first and after that it's the South African openers.

It's Sreesanth to open the bowling for India. Herschelle Gibbs and Graeme Smith are the opening batsmen for South Africa.

0.1

Sreesanth to Gibbs, 5 wides, Absolute rubbish ball to start with. Pitched halfway down the pitch and far down leg side. No chance at all that anyone can stop that.

0.1

Sreesanth to Gibbs, no run, Absolute rubbish ball to start with. Pitched halfway down the pitch and far down leg side. No chance at all that anyone can stop that.

0.2

Sreesanth to Gibbs, 1 wide, short of a length and again slipping down leg, another wide down the leg side, this isn't good bowling at all

0.2

Sreesanth to Gibbs, 1 run, short of a good length and on the off stump, punched down towards cover for a quick single

South Africa need to score 142 to finish on top of the group.

0.3

Sreesanth to Smith, FOUR, very full, on the pads, pacy delivery but the direction is really bad, Smith loves it there and he just whips the ball down to fine-leg for a boundary as easy as you please

0.4

Sreesanth to Smith, no run, short of a length and far outside the off, Smith leaves that alone, Sreesanth overcompensating with his line, lucky not to be called a wide

0.5

Sreesanth to Smith, no run, fullish and just a shade outside the off stump, a bit of late swing in, Smith shapes to play but the ball beats him all ends up and races through to the keeper

0.6

Sreesanth to Smith, no run, short of a driving length and outside the off, left well alone to the keeper. Erratic first over from Sreesanth but there was some promise there. 11 off it.

End of over 1 (11 runs) South Africa 11/0 (143 runs required from 19 overs, RR: 11.00, RRR: 7.52)
GC Smith    4* (4b 1x4)      S Sreesanth    1-0-11-0
HH Gibbs    1* (2b)

1.1

Singh to Gibbs, OUT, very full and on the stumps, RP Singh gets this ball bang on target. The ball swings back in Gibbs has only got his foot a bit down the pitch as the ball beats the bat and crashes into the pad. There's a spontaneous appeal and the finger goes up! India strike. Gibbs is not happy with the call and is shaking his head but he has to go. That was the perfect left-arm seamer's delivery to the right-hand batsman.

HH Gibbs lbw b Singh 1 (7m 3b 0x4 0x6) SR: 33.33

1.2

Singh to de Villiers, 1 run, fullish and on the off, swinging in late and a fair bit, punched towards cover for a single

1.3

Singh to Smith, no run, fullish and on the off, a hint of swing away for the left-handed Smith, punched to mid-off

1.4

Singh to Smith, OUT, Stunner! That is an absolute ripper from Dinesh Karthik in the slips cordon. It's a wide, swinging, full delivery from RP Singh and Smith has a real go at it. The ball flies off the outside edge really quick and wide. Karthik throws himself full length to his left and catches this one with both hands. That is a catch right out of the top drawer. You won't see too many more like that.

GC Smith c Karthik b Singh 4 (10m 6b 1x4 0x6) SR: 66.66

1.5

Singh to Kemp, no run, short of a length and outside the off, left alone to the keeper. Strange scenes here. After that stunning catch Karthik has taken over the gloves from Dhoni. Now the captain is at mid-off. Perhaps he wants to bowl later on?

1.6

Singh to Kemp, no run

End of over 2 (1 run) South Africa 12/2 (142 runs required from 18 overs, RR: 6.00, RRR: 7.88)
JM Kemp    0* (2b)      RP Singh    1-0-1-2
AB de Villiers    1* (1b)      S Sreesanth    1-0-11-0

2.1

Sreesanth to de Villiers, no run, short of a length and on the off, big movement off the seam into the batsman, played at and missed. Beaten for pace and rapped on the pad. Loud shout for the lbw. Not given. That was a close call.

2.2

Sreesanth to de Villiers, no run, full and outside the off, driven hard but straight to cover

2.3

Sreesanth to de Villiers, OUT, Corker! very full, very fast, very straight. This is the straight one from Sreesanth and it's pacy. de Villiers is late on the shot and plays down the wrong line as well. This one is too close and he won't get away with it. Simon Taufel agrees with the bowler and up goes the finger

AB de Villiers lbw b Sreesanth 1 (7m 4b 0x4 0x6) SR: 25.00

2.4

Sreesanth to Boucher, no run, short of a good length and outside the off stump, left well alone to the keeper

2.5

Sreesanth to Boucher, 1 wide, short of a good length and outside the off, big outswinger this, left well alone, Karthik dives and catches. Wide called.

2.5

Sreesanth to Boucher, 1 wide, fullish and outside the off, left alone to the keeper

2.5

Sreesanth to Boucher, 1 wide, short of a driving length and outside the off, another one that moves away and again a wide. This isn't very good from Sreesanth.

2.5

Sreesanth to Boucher, 1 run, fullish and on the off, punched away through point, carefully, all along the ground, down towards third-man

2.6

Sreesanth to Kemp, no run, full and just on the off, a hint of swing away, driven at, off a thick outside edge to point, no chance of a run

End of over 3 (4 runs) South Africa 16/3 (138 runs required from 17 overs, RR: 5.33, RRR: 8.11)
JM Kemp    0* (3b)      S Sreesanth    2-0-15-1
MV Boucher    1* (2b)      RP Singh    1-0-1-2

3.1

Singh to Boucher, no run, just back of a driving length and on the off, big swing in to the batsman, driven at, off a thick inside edge onto pad

3.2

Singh to Boucher, 1 wide, slightly shorter, outside the off, RP trying to get one to hold it's line. It's too far outside the off, though, and wide called

3.2

Singh to Boucher, 1 leg bye, back of a length and on the pads, dabbed away awkwardly towards square-leg

3.3

Singh to Kemp, no run, fuller and outside the off, no swing on this one, Kemp opens the face of the bat and guides it down to point, straight to the fielder

3.4

Singh to Kemp, no run, short of a good length and outside the off stump, angling away, left alone to the keeper

3.5

Singh to Kemp, 1 run, short of a length and on the off, still some late swing in to the batsman who plays it down to third-man

3.6

Singh to Boucher, no run, full and outside the off, the ball starts a bit wide of the stumps and swings in late, defended with a straight bat towards power

End of over 4 (3 runs) South Africa 19/3 (135 runs required from 16 overs, RR: 4.75, RRR: 8.43)
MV Boucher    1* (5b)      RP Singh    2-0-3-2
JM Kemp    1* (6b)      S Sreesanth    2-0-15-1

4.1

Sreesanth to Kemp, no run, back of a length and on middle and leg, this one is played at and missed, stifled shout for the lbw, that one was slipping down leg

4.2

Sreesanth to Kemp, no run, short of a driving length and outside the off, hint of away swing, left alone to the keeper

4.3

Sreesanth to Kemp, FOUR, short of a length and on the stumps. Attempted bouncer but it doesn't get nearly high enough to bother the tall Kemp who just rocks back and pulls to the square-leg fence

4.4

Sreesanth to Kemp, no run, fullish and outside the off, Sreesanth bowls a length that the batsman can neither go forward nor back to. Swing and a miss, through to the keeper

4.5

Sreesanth to Kemp, no run, just back of a length, a touch slower, on the off, defended down towards the off side

4.6

Sreesanth to Kemp, no run, fullish and outside the off stump, left well alone to the keeper but that's not nearly wide enough to be called a wide. Better line and length from Sreesanth

End of over 5 (4 runs) South Africa 23/3 (131 runs required from 15 overs, RR: 4.60, RRR: 8.73)
JM Kemp    5* (12b 1x4)      S Sreesanth    3-0-19-1
MV Boucher    1* (5b)      RP Singh    2-0-3-2

5.1

Singh to Boucher, FOUR, short of a good length and outside the off. This one does not swing and Boucher can go back easily and cut the ball away to the point fence

5.2

Singh to Boucher, 1 wide, short of a length, pitching outside the off and going further away with the angle. That's a big wide

5.2

Singh to Boucher, no run, fuller and on the off stump, this is a better line, defended back down the pitch to the bowler

5.3

Singh to Boucher, 2 runs, fullish and a touch too straight, the batsman can walk across and work that away down to fine-leg

5.4

Singh to Boucher, OUT, just short of a length and on the off. Driven away to the off side. Rohit Sharma swoops down on the ball from cover, picks the ball up one-handed on the dive and throws almost parallel to the ground. The throw is powerful and accurate and nails the stumps. That is a sensational bit of fielding and a big, big wicket for India

JM Kemp run out 5 (21m 12b 1x4 0x6) SR: 41.66

5.5

Singh to Pollock, 1 wide, another short, wide ball. Amid all the stunning cricket India are giving away a lot of extras as well.

5.5

Singh to Pollock, OUT, full, quick, swinging in, RP Singh comes around the stumps and fires a missile down the pitch. Pollock is late on the shot and the ball absolutely uproots the leg stump. That's a cracker of a ball and you can't really blame Pollock for that. India really turning on the heat here.

SM Pollock b Singh 0 (1m 1b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

5.6

Singh to JA Morkel, no run, fullish and on the leg stump, just a bit of swing away from the left-handed Albie Morkel who is squared up and can only squirt the ball towards cover

End of over 6 (8 runs) South Africa 31/5 (123 runs required from 14 overs, RR: 5.16, RRR: 8.78)

The presentation ceremony begins now and there are two captains with contrasting emotions ready to have a word.

Graeme Smith: "It's hugely disappoiting. We've played some superb cricket and to think we've lost only one game and are out of the tournament, it's very disappointing."

When asked about where it went wrong Smith says: "Good batting in the end from India took them to 150. But we just kept losing wickets. 150 under lights with a bit of green on the pitch was always going to be a tough ask.'

When asked if South Africa missed Jacques Kallis, Smith said: "I wasn't even thinking about that. It's a credit to have someone like Jacques Kallis in your side at any time. We've played some good cricket in this tournament so far. On a day like this, in a big game, it's always good to have experienced cricketers in the mix."

Mahendra Singh Dhoni says: "We played professional cricket. This is the way we need to play. We needed to get a good start from the bowlers and had to back that up with solid fielding. The important thing is to be determined about winning and have the belief and then you'll come out on top."

When asked if his team were worried about the pitch Dhoni says: "We're not too worried about the grass. We have a very decent bunch of fast bowlers. The way they've played today shows they're among the best in the business."

Rohit Sharma is the Man of the Match for his superb innings. "I've played in conditions like this before. I'm used to it," he says when asked about coming in to bat in a tricky situation. "We felt it was enough," says Rohit Sharma about the total India put on the board. "There was a lot happening in the wicket. Our bowlers did a really good job as well."

When asked about the transformation in the Indian fielding Rohit says: "We've been working hard on our fielding for the last couple of months. It all came out very nicely today."

That's all we have for you from the presentation and from this game. Do stay with Cricinfo for all the analysis of this game. And do remember to be logged on for the two semi-finals: India v Australia at Durban and Pakistan v New Zealand at Cape Town.
