Born in Guyana, Steve Massiah represented Guyana Under-19 in the late 1990s alongside players such as Travis Dowlin, Ramnaresh Sarwan and Narsingh Deonarine before emigrating to the United States. His marked the occasion of his first match for the national side, against a Minor Counties XI during USA's trip to England in 2000, with a century, and went on to represent USA in the WICB Red Stripe Bowl tournament in Jamaica later that year.

Massiah cemented a spot at the middle order and also struck a century in his first match as captain, a run-a-ball 136 that set up a big win over Cayman Islands at the World Cricket League Americas Region Division One tournament in August 2006. Massiah captained USA to the title at the same tournament in 2008, and with cricket in the US facing an uncertain future players of his quality will be vital to their cause.
