William Newhall came from a famous cricketing family, who were strong enough to be able to field an excellent XI on their own. His father and three uncles were all leading players in the era immediately after the Civil War, and William made six appearances for Philadelphia, including in their last first-class game in 1913. In 1912 he top scored with a career-best 57 when Gentlemen of Philadelphia beat the Australians.
