A legspinning allrounder, John Rothwell's four first-class matches all came within three months in 1933-34. In his second game, against Victoria, he made 43 and took 1 for 136 as Tasmania almost lost despite taking a first-innings lead of 320. His last two outings were against the Australian XI en route to the UK. In the first match he made 62 and took 3 for 110, in the second 47 and 4 for 92.
