The day after it was revealed that Vaughn van Jaarsveld has reneged on his contract with Warwickshire, Ashley Giles, the county's new director of cricket, has launched a stinging attack on Kolpak and European-qualified players.

"I don't want to go down the route of signing Kolpak or European-qualified players," Giles told The Daily Telegraph, explaining that he was not going to follow the quick-fix favoured by some other counties of bringing in such players in a bid for instant success.

"I think we have an opportunity in the second division to rebuild long-term. If we can ride out the storm and stick to the plan, I think we will attract other good young English players. We have got a large staff and the only way we can find out about those players is to see them at first-team level.

"What rates as success?" he continued. "Is it Warwickshire getting promotion next year or is it three or five years down the line the county producing players who play for England and help win an Ashes series? We are also putting together a quality coaching staff who are looking to mould players for the future."
