ICC World Cup - 1st match, Group D

West Indies v Pakistan

West Indies won by 54 runs

9.25am Here come the West Indies openers to a warm reception. The crowd are not all in yet and while the hype and hope is that it will be packed to the rafters, tickets were still on sale yesterday. Anyhow, we are about to get underway ... it will be Umar Gul to bowl to Chris Gayle. Two slips for the first ball ...

9.20am Percy Sonn, the ICC's president, has presented the original trophy to Clive Lloyd. Sonn didn't drop the trophy - or anything else come to that - which means he is already having a better tournament than he did in 2003.

9.15am A mass of West Indies legends, including Clive Lloyd, who led them to their two World Cup triumphs in 1975 and 1979, have come out onto the pitch and are lined up, resplendent in maroon blazers. All we need now are the players and officials ...

The weather is lovely, the sky is blue and we are within 15 minutes of the start.

9.05am Inzamam-ul-Haq won the toss and stuck West Indies in to bat. "We'll bowl first as a 9.30am start will mean a juicy track," the big man explained. "We have everything behind us now and we are focussing on the World Cup ... everyone is ready and focussing. Hopefully, inshallah, we will do well."

8.45am Brian Lara put on a brave face, but the first hour could be testing until the moisture burns off.

Good afternoon and welcome to the opening match of the 2007 World Cup. Over the next eight months ... ok, six and a bit weeks but it will seems like months by the end ... and 51 matches the tournament will unfold before the final in Barbados on April 28. But today we have the hosts, West Indies, against Pakistan, a side whose preparations could not have been worse had they tried.

0.1

Umar Gul to Gayle, 1 run, straight and full, clipped into the leg side and a huge cheer as the batsmen scurry through for a single

0.2

Umar Gul to Chanderpaul, no run, slightly shorter but great line, Chanderpaul, sporting the familiar black strips under his eyes, goes back and gets right into line

0.3

Umar Gul to Chanderpaul, no run, Chanderpaul back again, the ball hit him on the thigh and trickled an inch past the leg stump

0.4

Umar Gul to Chanderpaul, no run, slanted across the left hander and left alone

0.5

Umar Gul to Chanderpaul, 1 wide, another big cheer as Gul fires one down the leg side, Chanderpaul shimmies inside the line and it's the first wide of the tournament

0.5

Umar Gul to Chanderpaul, no run, good line, starting straight and swinging across Chanderpaul who leaves it alone

0.6

Umar Gul to Chanderpaul, 1 run, Chanderpaul back and angles the ball down to third man, all in control to keep the strike

Rana Naved-ul-Hassan from the Headley Stand End

End of over 1 (3 runs) West Indies 3/0 (RR: 3.00)
S Chanderpaul    1* (5b)      Umar Gul    1-0-3-0
CH Gayle    1* (1b)

1.1

Naved-ul-Hasan to Chanderpaul, 1 run, inswinger, a tad too full, and a controlled steer to third man

1.2

Naved-ul-Hasan to Gayle, no run, left alone by Gayle ...it started on the same line as the first ball but did not swing at all

1.3

Naved-ul-Hasan to Gayle, no run, a rather loose drive aimed through the covers, off the inside edge to midwicket

1.4

Naved-ul-Hasan to Gayle, no run, Gayle plays inside the line of the ball which was a foot outside the off stump

Billy Bowden into the limelight - there's a surprise - as he warns the bowler about his follow through

1.5

Naved-ul-Hasan to Gayle, 1 run, worked down to third man, all along the ground

1.6

Naved-ul-Hasan to Chanderpaul, 1 run, Naved-ul-Hasan drifts to leg and Chanderpaul flicks him to backward square leg

End of over 2 (3 runs) West Indies 6/0 (RR: 3.00)
S Chanderpaul    3* (7b)      Naved-ul-Hasan    1-0-3-0
CH Gayle    2* (5b)      Umar Gul    1-0-3-0

2.1

Umar Gul to Chanderpaul, 1 run, chopped down to third man - possibly a little to close to him to play that shot with comfort - but while it was uppish it was quite safe

2.2

Umar Gul to Gayle, OUT, Gayle on his way! Umar Gul banged one in a little short, the ball left Gayle off the seam, he nibbled at it and Kamran Akmal took a big step to his left to hold a catch at stomach height. That's an identical dismissal to the way Gayle fell in the warm-up match against India last week.

CH Gayle c †Kamran Akmal b Umar Gul 2 (10m 6b 0x4 0x6) SR: 33.33

2.3

Umar Gul to Sarwan, 1 run, dropped Younis Khan at second slip got both hands to a ball that was travelling to his right but he could only parry it. It was a poor shot from Sarwan - he slashed hard but with no foot movement - and West Indies have been let off the hook

2.4

Umar Gul to Chanderpaul, no run, turned wide of mid-on but hit too hard to allow the single

2.5

Umar Gul to Chanderpaul, 1 no ball, a no-ball from Gul ... he's fired up and put in the extra effort with that one

2.5

Umar Gul to Chanderpaul, no run, Chanderpaul back and across, blocked into the covers

2.6

Umar Gul to Chanderpaul, no run, Gul again short of a length and Chanderpaul happy to push that defensively into the covers. A good over from Gul that could have been even better

End of over 3 (3 runs) West Indies 9/1 (RR: 3.00)
S Chanderpaul    4* (12b)      Umar Gul    2-0-6-1
RR Sarwan    1* (1b)      Naved-ul-Hasan    1-0-3-0

So the first wicket has fallen at the World Cup and if you want to see what it looked like, or any other moment of action for that matter, try Cricinfo 3d

3.1

Naved-ul-Hasan to Sarwan, FOUR, sweet and deft leg glance, moved inside the line and clipped wide of the keeper. Not a hint of movement

3.2

Naved-ul-Hasan to Sarwan, 1 no ball, another no-ball - and a loud grunt from the bowler

3.2

Naved-ul-Hasan to Sarwan, no run, against Sarwan played a loose shot, the ball cut back between bat and pad and Akmal took it will as it headed down the leg side

3.3

Naved-ul-Hasan to Sarwan, no run, short and Sarwan pulls his bat well out of danger

3.4

Naved-ul-Hasan to Sarwan, no run, seamed from outside off and got even wider. Sarwan aimed a wild slash at the ball, narrowly missing the edge, and Bowden ignores a stare which hinted that it might have been a wide

3.5

Naved-ul-Hasan to Sarwan, FOUR, wide and short, Sarwan hammered that through the covers. It was a good a shot as the previous one was horrible

an extra man is sent to reinforce the covers

3.6

Naved-ul-Hasan to Sarwan, no run, shortish and Sarwan, with eight off the over, is happy to leave that alone

End of over 4 (9 runs) West Indies 18/1 (RR: 4.50)
RR Sarwan    9* (8b 2x4)      Naved-ul-Hasan    2-0-12-0
S Chanderpaul    4* (12b)      Umar Gul    2-0-6-1

Bugles and drums ring out. How did they get into the ground?

4.1

Umar Gul to Chanderpaul, no run, angled across Chanderpaul who doesn't want to know and leaves it well alone

4.2

Umar Gul to Chanderpaul, no run, full, through a half-hearted shot and a stifled appeal but the ball pitched outside the leg stump

4.3

Umar Gul to Chanderpaul, 4 runs, Kaneria earns a hard stare from his captain and rightly so. Chanderpaul pushed to short extra cover, Kaneria picked it up and hurled it about six feet over a bemused Akmal's head for four overthrows

4.4

Umar Gul to Chanderpaul, no run, pushed into the off side. Inzamam is still fuming and Kaneria looks as if he wants to be anywhere but out in the middle

4.5

Umar Gul to Chanderpaul, no run, another defensive jab into the covers

4.6

Umar Gul to Chanderpaul, no run, Chanderpaul back and into line. A good over spoiled by Kaneria's moment of madness

End of over 5 (4 runs) West Indies 22/1 (RR: 4.40)
S Chanderpaul    8* (18b)      Umar Gul    3-0-10-1
RR Sarwan    9* (8b 2x4)      Naved-ul-Hasan    2-0-12-0

5.1

Naved-ul-Hasan to Sarwan, no run, punched off the back foot to cover, no pace on the ball and so no run

5.2

Naved-ul-Hasan to Sarwan, no run, a half-hearted push to one outside off stump, but it wouldn't have carried even if it had found the edge

5.3

Naved-ul-Hasan to Sarwan, no run, Sarwan back in his crease and pushed once more into the covers. His two fours have been good, but he looks a little out of sorts otherwise

5.4

Naved-ul-Hasan to Sarwan, no run, driven into the ground, it bounces over the bowler but straight to mid-off

5.5

Naved-ul-Hasan to Sarwan, 1 run, steered off his legs to deepish midwicket ... he used the pace of the ball well

5.6

Naved-ul-Hasan to Chanderpaul, 1 run, again Naved-ul-Hasan drifts to the leg side, and Chanderpaul easily works the ball into space

End of over 6 (2 runs) West Indies 24/1 (RR: 4.00)
S Chanderpaul    9* (19b)      Naved-ul-Hasan    3-0-14-0
RR Sarwan    10* (13b 2x4)      Umar Gul    3-0-10-1

6.1

Umar Gul to Chanderpaul, no run, lovely delivery from Gul, slanted across Chanderpaul who makes a late decision to leave it. He has bowled well so far and deserves his success ...

6.2

Umar Gul to Chanderpaul, no run, Chanderpaul misses as he shapes to flick through the leg side and the ball thuds into his pads. Never a suggestion of an appeal ...

6.3

Umar Gul to Chanderpaul, no run, driven on the half volley to Kaneria at mid-off ... Kaneria opts not to try anything heroic and is happy just to polish the ball and carefully return it to Gul

6.4

Umar Gul to Chanderpaul, no run, Chanderpaul leaves another one angled across him

6.5

Umar Gul to Chanderpaul, 1 run, pushed firmly to the right of Kaneria at mid-off, no danger of a run-out even had he picked the ball up cleanly, which he didn't

6.6

Umar Gul to Sarwan, FOUR, not really that short but Sarwan pounced on the ball quickly, stepping back and flicking the ball to the boundary at backward square leg

End of over 7 (5 runs) West Indies 29/1 (RR: 4.14)
RR Sarwan    14* (14b 3x4)      Umar Gul    4-0-15-1
S Chanderpaul    10* (24b)      Naved-ul-Hasan    3-0-14-0

7.1

Naved-ul-Hasan to Chanderpaul, no run, a loose drive outside off stump, missed and through to Akmal

7.2

Naved-ul-Hasan to Chanderpaul, no run, Chanderpaul back and drops the ball into the leg side but the fielders sweep in to prevent thoughts of a run

7.3

Naved-ul-Hasan to Chanderpaul, 1 run, turned to backward square leg. Naved-ul-Hasan is struggling to find a consistent line, especially to Chanderpaul

7.4

Naved-ul-Hasan to Sarwan, no run, Sarwan steps back and watches the ball pass

7.5

Naved-ul-Hasan to Sarwan, no run, same line and for a moment Sarwan seemed poised to pull that, but in the end he shouldered arms

7.6

Naved-ul-Hasan to Sarwan, no run, fuller and Sarwan jabs down to block

A better over from Naved-ul-Hasan, just the one run.

End of over 8 (1 run) West Indies 30/1 (RR: 3.75)
RR Sarwan    14* (17b 3x4)      Naved-ul-Hasan    4-0-15-0
S Chanderpaul    11* (27b)      Umar Gul    4-0-15-1

8.1

Umar Gul to Chanderpaul, no run, Chanderpaul back and blocks

That's just the line Gul needs to maintain. He is forcing the batsman to think about every ball.

8.2

Umar Gul to Chanderpaul, no run, driven firmly to the hapless Kaneria and he earns a few brownie points by stopping it

8.3

Umar Gul to Chanderpaul, no run, pushed into the covers and three men run in to field

8.4

Umar Gul to Chanderpaul, no run, another good ball, short of a length and on off stump, forcing Chanderpaul to step back and defend

8.5

Umar Gul to Chanderpaul, no run, Chanderpaul turned square and misses the ball, a big shout from Akmal but it pitched outside leg stump and Simon Taufel not in the least interested

8.6

Umar Gul to Chanderpaul, no run, again on the spot and Chanderpaul has to settle for blocking it

A really sweet over from Gul.

End of over 9 (maiden) West Indies 30/1 (RR: 3.33)
S Chanderpaul    11* (33b)      Umar Gul    5-1-15-1
RR Sarwan    14* (17b 3x4)      Naved-ul-Hasan    4-0-15-0

9.1

Naved-ul-Hasan to Sarwan, FOUR, poor ball, short and wide, and Sarwan steps across and hammers that off the back foot through the covers

Naved-ul-Hasan is not giving Gul the support he deserves.

9.2

Naved-ul-Hasan to Sarwan, no run, pushed firmly into the covers

9.3

Naved-ul-Hasan to Sarwan, FOUR, full and wide, Sarwan throws the kitchen sink at the ball and slaps it over short extra cover. Not a chance of that being anything other than a four and Inzamam once more looks less than amused even by his taciturn standards

9.4

Naved-ul-Hasan to Sarwan, no run, prodded to cover

9.5

Naved-ul-Hasan to Sarwan, no run, through Sarwan and an enthusiastic appeal for leg-before from the bowler but Bowden shakes his head. Always too high

9.6

Naved-ul-Hasan to Sarwan, 2 runs, again cracked through the covers, but this one is not timed as well and it is retrieved a few yards inside the rope

And now for the next 10 overs, for the first time as an engaged woman, it's Jenny Thompson ... Thanks Martin. Hello everyone! So West Indies have regrouped after the early loss of Gayle. Gul's proving a handful for them, though, and he's coming on now for his sixth over. The second PowerPlay's been taken by Inzy, as signalled by the whirly-armed Simon Taufel

End of over 10 (10 runs) West Indies 40/1 (RR: 4.00)
RR Sarwan    24* (23b 5x4)      Naved-ul-Hasan    5-0-25-0
S Chanderpaul    11* (33b)      Umar Gul    5-1-15-1

10.1

Umar Gul to Chanderpaul, no run, pushed firmly into the cover

10.2

Umar Gul to Chanderpaul, 1 run, tickled round to fine leg for an easy single

10.3

Umar Gul to Sarwan, no run, ooh! Loving that one from Gul, down the channel, straight and true, and the batsman moves back to try to give himself room to cut, there was no room, and he slashes over the ball

10.4

Umar Gul to Sarwan, no run, nips back in off a length outside off with a hint of zing and Gul's really in his rhythm here

10.5

Umar Gul to Sarwan, no run, short ball, pitches outside off and wobbles around in the air there. Sarwan plays and misses yet again, once more trying to slash a cut at that, and just failing to find the edge

10.6

Umar Gul to Sarwan, no run, goes wider this time and that's well left

Rao Iftikhar comes on to bowl - that's not a name to type after you've had a few tequilas... I'd imagine, at least.

Umar Gul looks like he's joined the Scouts, meanwhile, with a white neckerchief of a cold towel around his neck. Just needs a woggle.

End of over 11 (1 run) West Indies 41/1 (RR: 3.72)
RR Sarwan    24* (27b 5x4)      Umar Gul    6-1-16-1
S Chanderpaul    12* (35b)      Naved-ul-Hasan    5-0-25-0

11.1

Iftikhar Anjum to Chanderpaul, no run, works that with soft hands straight to the man at midwicket and there's not even a hint of a single on

11.2

Iftikhar Anjum to Chanderpaul, no run, good delivery now from Rao, moving away from the lefthander's outside edge - Chanderpaul played at that one

11.3

Iftikhar Anjum to Chanderpaul, no run, worked down off the back foot into the covers

11.4

Iftikhar Anjum to Chanderpaul, no run, pushed up there, just outside off, and Chanderpaul plays it down well, off the back foot and taking the pace right off as he steers it into gully

11.5

Iftikhar Anjum to Chanderpaul, no run, rushes that one down the channel and that's easily left. This is some good bowling by the Pakistan pair - keep that up and the pressure will soon be building

11.6

Iftikhar Anjum to Chanderpaul, no run, on the money again, another dot, and another maiden in fact

Plenty of atmosphere as you'd expect for the opening match of the Cup in the Caribbean, never mind one that features the hosts... horns and drums and there's a, you guessed it, carnival feel to proceedings. In the stands at least

End of over 12 (maiden) West Indies 41/1 (RR: 3.41)
S Chanderpaul    12* (41b)      Iftikhar Anjum    1-1-0-0
RR Sarwan    24* (27b 5x4)      Umar Gul    6-1-16-1

Gul to bowl his seventh over on the trot

12.1

Umar Gul to Sarwan, no run, left alone outside off

12.2

Umar Gul to Sarwan, FOUR, shot! We liked that one, a full stride into the ball, just leans into it and pierces the slender gap - about a metre or so between fielders - as that races through point

12.3

Umar Gul to Sarwan, no run, straight to the man just behind point this time and the crowd get excited as they think it's consecutive fours, but pull out of their cheer as the ball's snapped up

12.4

Umar Gul to Sarwan, 1 run, turned off the toes in front of square - they look for a second, and it's not on, but Akmal muffs the return throw. No matter

12.5

Umar Gul to Chanderpaul, no run, left alone outside off

Chanderpaul takes off his helmet for a quick bit of air - it's hot work out there

12.6

Umar Gul to Chanderpaul, no run, bends away from the lefthander who quickly shoulders arms - and that's a good decision

End of over 13 (5 runs) West Indies 46/1 (RR: 3.53)
S Chanderpaul    12* (43b)      Umar Gul    7-1-21-1
RR Sarwan    29* (31b 6x4)      Iftikhar Anjum    1-1-0-0

13.1

Iftikhar Anjum to Sarwan, no run, dropped down off the back foot into short cover where there's some alert work from the fielder, warning against taking a run

13.2

Iftikhar Anjum to Sarwan, no run, Iftikhar picks up the ball as it's straight-batted into the ground and back to him and shapes to shy it at the stumps, but realises the batsman's back in his crease

13.3

Iftikhar Anjum to Sarwan, no run, straight and that's worked into the midwicket region with soft hands

13.4

Iftikhar Anjum to Sarwan, 1 run, short, a touch wide, and that's well cut away behind point off the back foot with a flourish. A good shot is matched by some sliding sharp work at a very deep third man, so deep he's nearly a fourth man

13.5

Iftikhar Anjum to Chanderpaul, 1 leg bye, Kaneria runs around on the third man boundary and wings it back in

13.6

Iftikhar Anjum to Sarwan, no run, straighter, but the batsman does well to make room to cut that away down to third man and they run through quickly

Rana Naved back into the attack - so that's a well-deserved break for Gul and a new end for Naved

End of over 14 (2 runs) West Indies 48/1 (RR: 3.42)
RR Sarwan    30* (36b 6x4)      Iftikhar Anjum    2-1-1-0
S Chanderpaul    12* (44b)      Umar Gul    7-1-21-1

14.1

Naved-ul-Hasan to Chanderpaul, no run, worked off the back foot into cover

14.2

Naved-ul-Hasan to Chanderpaul, FOUR, managed to get his pad out of the way, account for the swing, and that's worked behind square and that's the fifty up

14.3

Naved-ul-Hasan to Chanderpaul, 2 runs, driven through cover where Shoaib Malik does the honours

14.4

Naved-ul-Hasan to Chanderpaul, no run, left alone outside off this time

14.5

Naved-ul-Hasan to Chanderpaul, no run, straighter and that's quickly latched on to in front of point

14.6

Naved-ul-Hasan to Chanderpaul, no run, worked down to third man

Some whirling from Billy Bowden and that can only mean the final PowerPlay

End of over 15 (6 runs) West Indies 54/1 (RR: 3.60)
S Chanderpaul    18* (50b 1x4)      Naved-ul-Hasan    6-0-31-0
RR Sarwan    30* (36b 6x4)      Iftikhar Anjum    2-1-1-0

15.1

Iftikhar Anjum to Sarwan, no run, driven to mid-off where it's picked up easily

15.2

Iftikhar Anjum to Sarwan, no run, oh! Beauty squares him up a treat outside off - and Sarwan manages just about to leave that one

15.3

Iftikhar Anjum to Sarwan, FOUR, good response from Sarwan, creaming that wide of mid-on to bring up the fifty partnership from 81 balls for this pair. Good stuff - this is the confidence they needed

15.4

Iftikhar Anjum to Sarwan, no run, leading edge looking to turn it into the on-side, but the ball falls low into cover

15.5

Iftikhar Anjum to Sarwan, no run, zinged in, up there outside off, and there's an attempted drive through cover but the batsman doesn't quite get hold of it

15.6

Iftikhar Anjum to Sarwan, no run, another good delivery, right up there on the money, and the batsman can only defend that one

Drinks out in the middle as both sides take the time to reflect on the start. After losing Gayle early, these two have been playing sensibly, waiting for the bad ball and despatching it well, but Pakistan will be encouraged by the swing their pacemen are finding and the balls which are beating the bat.

Commercial announcement! My colleague in marketing tells me Cricinfo has launched a toolbar, offering instant site access. Mr Hall elaborates: "We're hoping that it will contribute to making Cricinfo a 'stickier' experience for users," whatever that means. So, for lots of stickiness, click here.

End of over 16 (4 runs) West Indies 58/1 (RR: 3.62)
RR Sarwan    34* (42b 7x4)      Iftikhar Anjum    3-1-5-0
S Chanderpaul    18* (50b 1x4)      Naved-ul-Hasan    6-0-31-0

16.1

Naved-ul-Hasan to Chanderpaul, no run, left alone outside off

The ground's slowly filling up

16.2

Naved-ul-Hasan to Chanderpaul, no run, played down patiently off the back foot into cover

16.3

Naved-ul-Hasan to Chanderpaul, no run, bends that one in from outside off and Chanderpaul nurdles that one into the covers

16.4

Naved-ul-Hasan to Chanderpaul, no run, bowled at 83mph, and that's driven uppishly in front of point, there's no sniff of a catch, though, yet there is a tidy bit of work, the fielder diving forward to snap the ball up

16.5

Naved-ul-Hasan to Chanderpaul, no run, steps into that cover drive, where Inzy does the job at cover (obviously enough)

16.6

Naved-ul-Hasan to Chanderpaul, no run, left alone

The fans are trickling in, there are still plenty of empty seats, even though the ICC Ministry of Truth may maintain it has been sold out for weeks. The corporate seats have the most glaring gaps, but when there's a choice between cricket and a free lunch, there can only be one winner.

End of over 17 (maiden) West Indies 58/1 (RR: 3.41)
S Chanderpaul    18* (56b 1x4)      Naved-ul-Hasan    7-1-31-0
RR Sarwan    34* (42b 7x4)      Iftikhar Anjum    3-1-5-0

17.1

Iftikhar Anjum to Sarwan, 1 run, driven to cover

17.2

Iftikhar Anjum to Chanderpaul, 1 run, if you're going to flash, then it may as well be hard, and a thick edge flies low to third man

17.3

Iftikhar Anjum to Sarwan, no run, straight and that's fended down off the back foot in front of him

17.4

Iftikhar Anjum to Sarwan, 1 run, worked down off the back foot, and they choose to hurry a quick single to cover - it was a big risk, but it paid off for the batsmen this time. Iftikhar did well to run round, turn and shy, even though he missed

17.5

Iftikhar Anjum to Chanderpaul, no run, over the wicket, and that's nicely bowled across the lefthander, worked to cover

17.6

Iftikhar Anjum to Chanderpaul, no run, top stuff again and he nearly has his man, Chanderpaul flashing a straight blade at that one on the back foot, before withdrawing from the shot at the last minute

This is proving a good decision from Inzy to have Iftikhar on, he's got a great economy rate so far

End of over 18 (3 runs) West Indies 61/1 (RR: 3.38)
S Chanderpaul    19* (59b 1x4)      Iftikhar Anjum    4-1-8-0
RR Sarwan    36* (45b 7x4)      Naved-ul-Hasan    7-1-31-0

18.1

Naved-ul-Hasan to Sarwan, no run, defended forward into the covers

18.2

Naved-ul-Hasan to Sarwan, no run, oh dear, terrible shot to one which kept low and came back. Sarwan aims an awkward jab at that one which has a hint of reverse swing but manages not to get bat on it, luckily enough for him

18.3

Naved-ul-Hasan to Sarwan, no run, up there and that's defended forward. Naved looks much more comfortable at this end

18.4

Naved-ul-Hasan to Sarwan, (no ball) 1 run, a bit of loop ducks in at the batsman outside off, he does well to drive it to mid-on and the batsmen chance the single, just getting there in time. Overstepped no-ball, there, and West Indies will take all runs coming their way right now

18.4

Naved-ul-Hasan to Chanderpaul, no run, driven to cover this time

18.5

Naved-ul-Hasan to Chanderpaul, no run, short ball, defended down off the back foot into cover

18.6

Naved-ul-Hasan to Chanderpaul, no run, over the wicket and pushes that one slightly away from the lefthander who chops down a thick bottom edge which crashes into the ground, but behind, and indeed wide of, the sticks. Akmal pouches the through-ball

The last over of the PowerPlays coming up

End of over 19 (2 runs) West Indies 63/1 (RR: 3.31)
S Chanderpaul    19* (62b 1x4)      Naved-ul-Hasan    8-1-33-0
RR Sarwan    37* (49b 7x4)      Iftikhar Anjum    4-1-8-0

19.1

Iftikhar Anjum to Sarwan, 1 run, that's a good ball, straight again, and Sarwan brings his bat down late on that, looking to drive it straight - a thick edge flies safe, and low, but it's not where he wanted to place the ball. Nevertheless they take the single

19.2

Iftikhar Anjum to Chanderpaul, OUT, and Iftikhar strikes! great delivery, surprises Chanderpaul with the bounce, at chest height. The batsman jumps back, opens the face and feels outside the off stump - sure enough he connects with the ball, steering it straight into Akmal's open gloves, who did well with a dive to his left. Iftikhar gets his reward for some consistently straight bowling

Here comes Kaneria. He's had a mare in the field so far today.

20.1

Danish Kaneria to Samuels, no run, good start, turned past a lunge outside off stump

20.2

Danish Kaneria to Samuels, no run, squirted to backward point. Kaneria right on the button

20.3

Danish Kaneria to Samuels, no run, on the spot, pushed defensively into the off side

20.4

Danish Kaneria to Samuels, no run, another one right where it matters, Samuels can do no more than cautiously defend

Inzamam has brought in a slip seeing how tight Kaneria is bowling, adding to the pressure on Samuels.

20.5

Danish Kaneria to Samuels, no run, good, tight bowling once more

20.6

Danish Kaneria to Samuels, no run, really good over to open up, all six balls forcing the batsman to play and also putting doubt in his mind with one that really ripped past the outside edge

21.2

Iftikhar Anjum to Sarwan, no run, much the same area but this time Sarwan is confident enough that it will hold its line to leave it

21.3

Iftikhar Anjum to Sarwan, 1 run, pushed into the covers for a spot of tip-and-run, good communication and never any danger of a run-out once both batsmen had committed

21.4

Iftikhar Anjum to Samuels, no run, Samuels seemed to think about smacking that straight but checked and blocked. The crowd are a little restless

21.5

Iftikhar Anjum to Samuels, 1 run, too wide and slashed to the man on the backward point boundary for a single, provoking a burst of cheers and horns from the crowd

21.6

Iftikhar Anjum to Sarwan, 1 run, worked to the right of mid-on for an easy single even through the fielder picked up and threw down the stumps at the striker's end. The batsman must have been well home as there wasn't even a call for the third umpire

22.4

Danish Kaneria to Sarwan, no run, wide, spun and left alone

23.1

Iftikhar Anjum to Sarwan, no run, the balls beats a semi-defensive prod, a loud appeal - in fact two appeals - but it was always heading down the leg side as he bowled it from so wide of the crease

23.2

Iftikhar Anjum to Sarwan, no run, too much width, slashed to backward point and a great diving stop to his right deservedly gets a warm response from the crowd

23.3

Iftikhar Anjum to Sarwan, no run, fuller length driven back to the bowler

23.4

Iftikhar Anjum to Sarwan, no run, seamed back from short of a length, Sarwan wafts and looks all at sea with a really insipid shot

23.5

Iftikhar Anjum to Sarwan, OUT, Sarwan falls one short of his fifty, caught at first slip off the outside edge as he played a loose drive to a ball pitched up to him. It has been a real curate's egg of an innings, and while Younis Khan will be happy to have held the chance, it should be remembered that he put Sarwan down off the first ball he faced

Shoaib Malik to Samuels, FOUR, poor ball, down the leg side and helped on its way

42.6

Shoaib Malik to Samuels, no run, confusion, the ball is played into the covers, Bravo again came too far and had to dive full length as the ball was fired in ... but as it was Shoaib Malik dropped the ball and shattered the stumps with his empty hands

End of over 43 (5 runs) West Indies 176/4 (RR: 4.09)
MN Samuels    59* (67b 4x4 3x6)      Shoaib Malik    4-0-24-0

43.2

Mohammad Hafeez to Bravo, no run, turned into the leg side but right to a man

43.3

Mohammad Hafeez to Bravo, 1 run, pushed into the off side to give Samuels the strike, which is what West Indies really need

43.4

Mohammad Hafeez to Samuels, FOUR, an oh-so-delicate shot, running the ball fine through where first slip would have been, sublime touch

43.5

Mohammad Hafeez to Samuels, no run, into the leg side but no run as midwicket quickly onto it

43.6

Mohammad Hafeez to Samuels, OUT, Samuels tried to give himself room to smack it over long-on but didn't connect as he intended and the ball went right down the throat of Shoaib Malik. A tame end to an entertaining innings, and now West Indies will struggle to press on as they needed to in these final overs

MN Samuels c Shoaib Malik b Mohammad Hafeez 63 (83m 70b 5x4 3x6) SR: 90.00

End of over 44 (5 runs) West Indies 181/5 (RR: 4.11)

44.1

Danish Kaneria to Ramdin, 1 run, premeditated paddle into the leg side, quite safe and backward square leg fields

44.2

Danish Kaneria to Bravo, 1 run, driven into the off side,. poor calling and a rather hectic scramble ensues as Ramdin has to hurry to make safety

44.3

Danish Kaneria to Ramdin, no run, Ramdin misses an attempted cut

44.4

Danish Kaneria to Ramdin, no run, punched to extra cover, Ramdin again really struggles to find any gap

44.5

Danish Kaneria to Ramdin, OUT, Ramdin is well stumped by Akmal. He lurched forward, missed the ball and while his foot was behind the line, he overbalanced momentarily and it was in the air as the bails came off. He seemed to know that he was done for even before the third umpire's decision, and the innings is coming off the rails

D Ramdin st †Kamran Akmal b Danish Kaneria 1 (1m 4b 0x4 0x6) SR: 25.00

44.6

Danish Kaneria to Smith, 1 run, single into the leg side ...but they need boundaries and they need them straight away

End of over 45 (3 runs) West Indies 184/6 (RR: 4.08)
DR Smith    1* (1b)      Danish Kaneria    9-2-45-1
DJ Bravo    4* (8b)      Mohammad Hafeez    8-0-29-2

45.1

Mohammad Hafeez to Smith, no run, Smith back and flicks to leg but the fielders are all in to stop singles

45.2

Mohammad Hafeez to Smith, 1 run, missed an attempted drive, off the pads into the off side

45.3

Mohammad Hafeez to Bravo, 1 leg bye, shapes to sweep, misses and a massive shout for leg-before is turned down

45.4

Mohammad Hafeez to Smith, SIX, too full and slog-swept high over midwicket, that was six all the way

45.5

Mohammad Hafeez to Smith, 2 runs, turned wide of midwicket and great running ensures two where most players would have settled for a single ..even so, they were struggling had Akmal not dropped the return

45.6

Mohammad Hafeez to Smith, 1 run, Smith finds another gap on the off. Good running and a productive over. Four more of those and West Indies will have salvaged something from this

End of over 46 (11 runs) West Indies 195/6 (RR: 4.23)
DR Smith    11* (6b 1x6)      Mohammad Hafeez    9-0-39-2
DJ Bravo    4* (9b)      Danish Kaneria    9-2-45-1

Umar Gul coming back into the attack. He was great earlier in his seven-over spell, with 1 for 21.

46.1

Umar Gul to Smith, 1 run, pitches outside off and that's easily cut away behind point, the batsman making a room to dab that down - the man at gully got a hand on it

46.2

Umar Gul to Bravo, 1 run, full toss, low and in line with off - the batsman drives it out to mid-off

46.3

Umar Gul to Smith, FOUR, wide of mid-off and that's a clean, well-driven four through cover to bring up the 200

46.4

Umar Gul to Smith, no run, windy whoosh to one which sailed down the off channel - he was looking to put that through midwicket but completely missed it

46.5

Umar Gul to Smith, FOUR, good ball, short and cramped the batsman who did well to squeeze that off his chest over the slips, a deliberate shot and good improvisation

46.6

Umar Gul to Smith, 1 run, tip and run into the off side, another productive over

If West Indies can get to 240 then they will be fairly happy. Rana Naved-ul-Hasan back on, which judging by our feedback will not please many of our Pakistan supporters ...

End of over 47 (11 runs) West Indies 206/6 (RR: 4.38)
DR Smith    21* (11b 2x4 1x6)      Umar Gul    8-1-32-1
DJ Bravo    5* (10b)      Mohammad Hafeez    9-0-39-2

47.1

Naved-ul-Hasan to Smith, 1 run, turned from off stump into the leg side

47.2

Naved-ul-Hasan to Bravo, no run, good slower ball (111kph/69mph) up in the blockhole and dug out but no more

47.3

Naved-ul-Hasan to Bravo, FOUR, another slower ball but too straight and helped on its way fine on the leg side. Not a good delivery as he lost his line

47.4

Naved-ul-Hasan to Bravo, 1 run, superb yorker, dug out with a loss of dignity but quite effectively and a run to add to the bowler's sense of being hard done by

47.5

Naved-ul-Hasan to Smith, FOUR, horrible ... leg-side full toss hammered to the rope

You can't bowl so badly and loosely at this stage when the batsmen are ready to hit anything.

47.6

Naved-ul-Hasan to Smith, SIX, it continues to get worse for the bowler as yet another slower ball is swatted hit into the stands over cow corner, six all the way and even were there a longer boundary. Poor over

The last three overs have yielded 38 runs ...

End of over 48 (16 runs) West Indies 222/6 (RR: 4.62)
DR Smith    32* (14b 3x4 2x6)      Naved-ul-Hasan    9-1-49-0
DJ Bravo    10* (13b 1x4)      Umar Gul    8-1-32-1

48.1

Umar Gul to Bravo, 1 run, turned to midwicket, scrambled run although even had the shy at the stumps hit Bravo would have been home

48.2

Umar Gul to Smith, OUT, Smith attempted to hammer the ball to leg but it was wider than he thought and he ended up hitting it into the heavens off the toe of the bat. Inzamam at extra cover made no mistake with the catch

DR Smith c Inzamam-ul-Haq b Umar Gul 32 (16m 15b 3x4 2x6) SR: 213.33

Jerome Taylor the new man but the batsmen crossed so he is not on strike

48.3

Umar Gul to Bravo, 1 run, steered to backward point

48.4

Umar Gul to Taylor, no run, yorker-length, driven hard back to the bowler who fields and shapes to throw down the stumps, but thinks better of it

48.5

Umar Gul to Taylor, 1 run, slower ball (74mph) worked into the leg side

48.6

Umar Gul to Bravo, 2 wides, leg-side delivery, Akmal takes the ball as the batsmen set off for a single, but his throw is dire and what could have been trouble is anything but

48.6

Umar Gul to Taylor, 1 run, Taylor again finds space and this time no dramatics as the pair run the single

Naved-ul-Hasan jettisoned after that poor over, and rightly so. Inzamam turns to Iftikhar Anjum.

End of over 49 (6 runs) West Indies 228/7 (RR: 4.65)
JE Taylor    2* (3b)      Umar Gul    9-1-38-2
DJ Bravo    12* (15b 1x4)      Naved-ul-Hasan    9-1-49-0

49.1

Iftikhar Anjum to Taylor, OUT, yorker, dug out back to the bowler, the batsmen immediately set off for the single but Iftikhar Anjum gathered, turned and threw down the stumps at the bowler's end. Taylor in effect sacrificed himself to get Bravo onto strike

JE Taylor run out 2 (5m 4b 0x4 0x6) SR: 50.00

49.2

Iftikhar Anjum to Bravo, FOUR, full toss, Bravo leans back and sends that rasping through extra cover. Good shot but not a sensible delivery

49.3

Iftikhar Anjum to Bravo, OUT, Bravo is undone by the slower ball, coming to the pitch of it but completing his stroke too early - with his bottom hand slipping off the handle as he played it - and Naved-ul-Hasan at third man takes the catch with no alarms

DJ Bravo c Naved-ul-Hasan b Iftikhar Anjum 16 (38m 17b 2x4 0x6) SR: 94.11

49.4

Iftikhar Anjum to Powell, 1 run, good inswinging yorker, jammed out into the leg side by Powell. Not much more he could have done there

49.5

Iftikhar Anjum to Collymore, 2 runs, dribbled into the leg side, picked up by midwicket and while the shy would have found Collymore short at the bowler's end, it was not worth the overthrow which resulted

49.6

Iftikhar Anjum to Collymore, SIX, what a finale! Collymore swatted that fullish delivery many a mile over the head of long-on to send the crowd into raptures

West Indies will lunch the happier side, with the last five overs producing 58 runs. While they set out aiming for a 250+ score, they looked to be heading for a much smaller total until the last onslaught. We will be back in about 40 minutes - at 1.40pm (1840 GMT) for the start of Pakistan's reply.

End of over 50 (13 runs) West Indies 241/9
CD Collymore    8* (2b 1x6)      Iftikhar Anjum    10-3-44-3
DBL Powell    1* (1b)      Umar Gul    9-1-38-2
