ICC World Cup, 3rd Match, Group C: Canada v Kenya at Gros Islet, Mar 14, 2007
ICC World Cup - 3rd match, Group C
Kenya won by 7 wickets (with 40 balls remaining)
Played at Beausejour Stadium, Gros Islet, St Lucia (neutral venue)
14 March 2007 (50-over match)

9.10amHello everyone - good morning if you're in Canada, good afternoon if you're in Kenya, and good [fill in as appropriate] wherever you are in the rest of the world. Welcome along to coverage of the first Group C match between Canada and Kenya.

I'm Jenny Thompson and will be joined at some point by the tireless Martin Williamson, whose preview you can be perusing here.

We expect this match to be a tight tussle to the wire, but stay with us to see how it pans out. We will of course be bringing you the toss, team news and pitch report as soon as we've got them.

We do know that yesterday the St Lucia pitch was hard and even-paced, while there is the chance of some showers during the latter part of the day, but we'll try to confirm these things for you soonest.

Something to watch out for, by the way - if he plays today, Anderson Cummins will become only the second player to represent two countries in the World Cup when he steps out for Canada; his second life beginning at 40. Cummins previously represented West Indies of course but will now play for Canada, although he's been strictly average in his appearances for the country to date - then again, his comeback came 11 years after hanging up his West Indian boots. (Kepler Wessels was the first, of course, playing for South Africa and Australia)

9.20am And Cummins plays! Here is Canada's team: 1 Geoff Barnett, 2 Abdool Samad, 3 Ashish Bagai (wk), 4 Ian Billcliff, 5 John Davison (capt), 6 Ashif Mulla, 7 Sunil Dhaniram, 8 George Codrington, 9 Umar Bhatti, 10 Anderson Cummins, 11 Henry Osinde.

Kenya's XI are: 1 Maurice Ouma (wk), 2 David Obuya, 3 Ravi Shah, 4 Steve Tikolo (capt), 5 Tanmay Mishra, 6 Nehemiah Odhiambo, 7 Thomas Odoyo, 8 Collins Obuya, 9 Peter Ongondo, 10 Lameck Onyango, 11 Hiren Varaiya.

Steve Tikolo has sent Canada in on a beautiful day. "There is some moisture in it" explained Tikolo, playing in his fourth World Cup, "and we are looking to use that to our advantage. It will probably get better as the day goes on. I think we are in for a good game."

9.30am The umpires Asad Rauf and Peter Parker, in fetching mustard shirts, make their way into the middle. A good crowd are in for this game - Canada flags around, there. Michael Atherton is surprised Kenya have sent Canada in on what looks to be a pretty dry pitch - we'll soon find out whether Tikolo's decision was a good one as here come Canada's openers Geoff Barnett and Abdool Samad.

It will be Thomas Odoyo to open the bowling.

Teething problems in the live scoring department I'm afraid - a tidy enough first over from Odoyo, but a stray loose ball allowed Samad to get off the mark with a four. Peter Ongondo at the other end now, and he opens up with a no-ball.

Sorry about this - bear with us - Canada have made a steady start, 7 for 0 from their first two overs. Ongondo started waywardly, with a no-ball and a wide, but soon found his rhythm.

Just one run from the third over, Odoyo bowling well here, finding lots of swing. The technical gremlins are still at their evil best (or worst) so please have patience in the meanwhile... Thank you!

Not much pace in this pitch, the batsmen finding most problems with the swing rather than anything else...

Still with us?! Good, good. Canada have crept up to 12 without loss from 4 overs, now, with a juicy flick for four off that last over, which was otherwise tidy.

5th over A maiden over from Odoyo - ending with a half-shout for lbw, that looked good on HawkEye, the ball pitching in line and straightening and hitting half-way up middle stump. Ongondo will continue with the sixth over.

End of over 6, Canada are now 17 for 0 after an expansive cover-drive from Barnett, who's finally opened up

0.1

Odoyo to Barnett, no run, a good start from Odoyo, angling that over the wicket across the lefthander who shoulders arms early

0.2

Odoyo to Barnett, no run, defended this time

0.3

Odoyo to Barnett, 1 run, on the money, the batsman comes forward to press that into short midwicket - Samad would have gone with a direct hit, but the throw was over the stumps

0.4

Odoyo to Samad, no run, stays over the wicket to the righthander, sensibly enough, and finds a hint of swing away from him

0.5

Odoyo to Samad, FOUR, strays down leg and that's glanced very fine for a straightforward four

0.6

Odoyo to Samad, no run, steps forward, a hint of away swing, and that's defended easily enough into the covers

End of over 1 (5 runs) Canada 5/0 (RR: 5.00)

    • AM Samad 4 (3b 1x4)
    • GEF Barnett 1 (3b)
    • TM Odoyo 1-0-5-0
1.1

Ongondo to Barnett, 1 no ball, overstepping with the effort there, but there was a hint of movement away from the batsman

1.1

Ongondo to Barnett, 1 wide, a wide this time, oops. A nervous start from Ongondo, and that wasn't even in the tramlines. Time to settle in, yet, though

Two slips in place

1.1

Ongondo to Barnett, no run, better - straighter and the batsman can only shoulder arms as that flies through on a good length to the keeper

1.2

Ongondo to Barnett, no run, ooh! Great ball, half an appeal, but the bat just brushed the pad

1.3

Ongondo to Barnett, no run, defended forward this time

1.4

Ongondo to Barnett, no run, outside off and that flies through to the keeper

1.5

Ongondo to Barnett, no run, on the money, the batsman looks to play that into the on-side, dropping his hands down into the shot, but his top hand flies up off the bat with the impact

1.6

Ongondo to Barnett, no run, worked into the leg-side again for no run

End of over 2 (2 runs) Canada 7/0 (RR: 3.50)

    • GEF Barnett 1 (10b)
    • AM Samad 4 (3b 1x4)
    • PJ Ongondo 1-0-2-0
    • TM Odoyo 1-0-5-0
2.1

Odoyo to Samad, no run, plenty of swing in the air again for Odoyo, who leaves that one alone; good decision, not worth chasing that one

2.2

Odoyo to Samad, no run, on the money - that's pressed into the leg-side

2.3

Odoyo to Samad, no run, a half-shout for lbw but Parker's head is shaking pretty much as soon as the ball rapped the pad

2.4

Odoyo to Samad, no run, places that on a good length and it's defended into the covers. Good bowling from Odoyo, giving nothing away so far this over

2.5

Odoyo to Samad, no run, ooh! Late movement away there for Odoyo for one which was already quite wide, went wider, and had the batsman feeling for it. Nearly

2.6

Odoyo to Samad, 1 run, a touch straighter results in a thickish outside edge, the batsman playing with the awayswing

End of over 3 (1 run) Canada 8/0 (RR: 2.66)

    • AM Samad 5 (9b 1x4)
    • GEF Barnett 1 (10b)
    • TM Odoyo 2-0-6-0
    • PJ Ongondo 1-0-2-0
3.1

Ongondo to Samad, no run, defended forward, the ball not getting up very much on this pitch which is lacking pace

3.2

Ongondo to Samad, no run, defended into the covers

3.3

Ongondo to Samad, no run, more defence and the batsman rehearses his fresh-air shot

3.4

Ongondo to Samad, no run, oh! Great ball, cutting back in off the seam and surprising the batsman as it raps into his pads

3.5

Ongondo to Samad, FOUR, first aggressive stroke of the innings, the ball just straying onto the leg-side, and that's picked well off middle-and-leg, as it's clipped behind square

3.6

Ongondo to Samad, no run, oh, great response, that's the ball, tempting the batsman - like an ice-cream seller when you're on a diet - to have a lick. He's tempted sure enough, but soon regrets his haste - still he misses and lives to fight another day

End of over 4 (4 runs) Canada 12/0 (RR: 3.00)

    • AM Samad 9 (15b 2x4)
    • GEF Barnett 1 (10b)
    • PJ Ongondo 2-0-6-0
    • TM Odoyo 2-0-6-0
4.1

Odoyo to Barnett, no run, more defensiveness from the batsman

4.2

Odoyo to Barnett, no run, yet again more defence

4.3

Odoyo to Barnett, no run, and some more defence

4.4

Odoyo to Barnett, no run, the lefthander comes forward to try to work that into the leg-side, fails to get hold of it, and that's defended

4.5

Odoyo to Barnett, no run, bends over that one in leaning it into the leg-side

4.6

Odoyo to Barnett, no run, a maiden over from Odoyo - ending with a half-shout for lbw, that looked good on HawkEye, the ball pitching in line and straightening and hitting half-way up middle stump

End of over 5 (maiden) Canada 12/0 (RR: 2.40)

    • GEF Barnett 1 (16b)
    • AM Samad 9 (15b 2x4)
    • TM Odoyo 3-1-6-0
    • PJ Ongondo 2-0-6-0
5.1

Ongondo to Samad, 1 run, steered down to third man

5.2

Ongondo to Barnett, no run, driven to a slightly wide mid-on

5.3

Ongondo to Barnett, no run, defended forward this time

5.4

Ongondo to Barnett, FOUR, expansive over-the-top cover-drive finally gets some impetus into his innings

5.5

Ongondo to Barnett, no run, pushed right up there and that's defended

5.6

Ongondo to Barnett, no run, right up there again and that's driven straight to mid-on

End of over 6 (5 runs) Canada 17/0 (RR: 2.83)

    • GEF Barnett 5 (21b 1x4)
    • AM Samad 10 (16b 2x4)
    • PJ Ongondo 3-0-11-0
    • TM Odoyo 3-1-6-0
6.1

Odoyo to Samad, 1 run, inside edge down to third man

6.2

Odoyo to Barnett, no run, driven down to mid-on, not quite off the middle

6.3

Odoyo to Barnett, no run, defended

6.4

Odoyo to Barnett, no run, hits a good channel again and Barnett finished outside off stump

6.5

Odoyo to Barnett, 1 run

6.6

Odoyo to Samad, no run, back of a length, Samad come across and plays with the thick outside half of the bat out to point

End of over 7 (2 runs) Canada 19/0 (RR: 2.71)

    • AM Samad 11 (18b 2x4)
    • GEF Barnett 6 (25b 1x4)
    • TM Odoyo 4-1-8-0
    • PJ Ongondo 3-0-11-0
7.1

Ongondo to Barnett, no run, round the wicket now ooh, that one seems to stop slightly in the pitch and Barnett nearly spoons it to the man at short, straight midwicket

7.2

Ongondo to Barnett, no run, this one holds its line from round the wicket and Barnett nearly pushes at it as it straightens

7.3

Ongondo to Barnett, FOUR, connects powerfully, frees his arms and launches over square cover for a welcome boundary

7.4

Ongondo to Barnett, 1 no ball, overstepping with the effort, there. Slightly fuller and closer to off stump, Barnett comes forward and plays back to the bowler

7.4

Ongondo to Barnett, no run, drives, but without any footwork and the ball flies off the inside half of the bat out to square leg

7.5

Ongondo to Barnett, 2 leg byes, glanced away off the pads

7.6

Ongondo to Barnett, no run, defended back down the pitch

And we're back up straight! Sorry about that - thanks for your patience with us.

End of over 8 (7 runs) Canada 26/0 (RR: 3.25)

    • GEF Barnett 10 (32b 2x4)
    • AM Samad 11 (18b 2x4)
    • PJ Ongondo 4-0-16-0
    • TM Odoyo 4-1-8-0
8.1

Odoyo to Samad, no run, defended

8.2

Odoyo to Samad, no run, more defence, coming forward to trap that one down into the ground

8.3

Odoyo to Samad, 1 no ball, oh! Nearly very exciting... but wouldn't have mattered anyway as that's a big no-ball. Still, there was a very nice shape to that ball and that had the batsman chasing it

8.3

Odoyo to Samad, no run, on the money, with a hint of swing, what else can you do with that ... except defend, as he does

8.4

Odoyo to Samad, (no ball) FOUR, width on that one, and that's hammered away through the covers with a flourish of a drive. Nice work

8.4

Odoyo to Samad, no run, driven straight to cover

8.5

Odoyo to Samad, no run, places that on a good length, it deviates cheekily, saying to the batsman, "Chase me" - but, to his credit, he doesn't

8.6

Odoyo to Samad, no run, ah! Play and a miss this time, over in the blink of an eye. Fishing outside off

Meanwhile over in St Kitts, Australia have made a predictably strong start against Scotland, racing to 52 for 0 after 7 overs

End of over 9 (6 runs) Canada 32/0 (RR: 3.55)

    • AM Samad 15 (26b 3x4)
    • GEF Barnett 10 (32b 2x4)
    • TM Odoyo 5-1-14-0
    • PJ Ongondo 4-0-16-0
9.1

Ongondo to Barnett, no run, hands fly up off the bat

9.2

Ongondo to Barnett, no run, driven to mid-on

9.3

Ongondo to Barnett, FOUR, souped over midwicket, picking up the length early, and with great hand/eye co-ordination he rocks on the front foot and plants that through the leg-side

9.4

Ongondo to Barnett, FOUR, edged away through third man, streakily enough

9.5

Ongondo to Barnett, no run, pushes that right up there, but checks the shot

9.6

Ongondo to Barnett, no run, defended forward and that's the first Powerplay over and done with

Hmm, Steve Tikolo's decision to bowl first not looking brilliant - although a few quick wickets (helped by the swing?) could change the complexion of course.

Whirl, whirl, whirl - it's the second Powerplay

End of over 10 (8 runs) Canada 40/0 (RR: 4.00)

    • GEF Barnett 18 (38b 4x4)
    • AM Samad 15 (26b 3x4)
    • PJ Ongondo 5-0-24-0
    • TM Odoyo 5-1-14-0
10.1

Odoyo to Samad, no run, defended into the covers

10.2

Odoyo to Samad, no run, defended forward

10.3

Odoyo to Samad, OUT, short, wide and that's gone! That's a disappointing end to Samad's innings, cutting straight to backward point for a catch that can only be described as regulation

AM Samad c Tikolo b Odoyo 15 (46m 29b 3x4 0x6) SR: 51.72

Samad had been playing himself in nicely then, but now the momentum has been instantly punctured. Ashish Bagai strides in

10.4

Odoyo to Bagai, no run, defended forward

10.5

Odoyo to Bagai, 3 runs, nicely timed back foot push through the covers to get off the mark but it's chased down by a pair of fielders just inside the boundary

10.6

Odoyo to Barnett, 1 run, strays on to leg and that's nudged into the midwicket region

My ex-colleague Andy Berks must be missing us - he's just asked for a shout-out to him and his new orange-uniformed chums at EasyJet. Go on, then, just this once. My non-splitter colleague of an Andrew, Mr Hall, meanwhile, has asked me to plug Cricinfo 3d and the new toolbar so while I'm feeling generous...

End of over 11 (4 runs) Canada 44/1 (RR: 4.00)

    • GEF Barnett 19 (39b 4x4)
    • A Bagai 3 (2b)
    • TM Odoyo 6-1-18-1
    • PJ Ongondo 5-0-24-0

Change of bowling - Nehemiah Odhiambo (worth 234 points in Scrabble) comes on

11.1

Odhiambo to Barnett, no run, defended first up

11.2

Odhiambo to Barnett, 1 run, ... and he nearly gets a wicket second ball - Barnett not knowing where that leading edge had gone - over the slips in fact

11.3

Odhiambo to Bagai, 1 wide, down the off-side - no doubt that was wide, there

Odhiambo bouncing back to his mark - he looks like he's enjoying himself out there, even despite the wide

11.3

Odhiambo to Bagai, FOUR, not a great ball, and not great fielding - diving inside the long-on boundary from that on-drive. Canada's fifty comes up

11.4

Odhiambo to Bagai, no run, right up there and defended

11.5

Odhiambo to Bagai, no run, on the money and that's pushed off the backfoot into the covers

11.6

Odhiambo to Bagai, no run, cut off the back foot straight to the man at backward point

End of over 12 (6 runs) Canada 50/1 (RR: 4.16)

    • A Bagai 7 (6b 1x4)
    • GEF Barnett 20 (41b 4x4)
    • NN Odhiambo 1-0-6-0
    • TM Odoyo 6-1-18-1
12.1

Ongondo to Barnett, 1 run, hit aerially to fine leg and the batsman watched anxiously in case he was caught - but the ball fell safe

12.2

Ongondo to Bagai, no run, defended into the covers. A run, perhaps? "No!"

12.3

Ongondo to Bagai, no run, driven slowly to the off-side

12.4

Ongondo to Bagai, no run, worked into the covers this time

12.5

Ongondo to Bagai, no run, defended this time

12.6

Ongondo to Bagai, 1 no ball, oh, great ball - ah, a no-ball - still, that was a play and a miss, and that will encourage the bowler

12.6

Ongondo to Bagai, no run, a big stride forward to defend

End of over 13 (2 runs) Canada 52/1 (RR: 4.00)

    • A Bagai 7 (12b 1x4)
    • GEF Barnett 21 (42b 4x4)
    • PJ Ongondo 6-0-26-0
    • NN Odhiambo 1-0-6-0
13.1

Odhiambo to Barnett, FOUR, punched down the ground - there's no need to run for that

13.2

Odhiambo to Barnett, FOUR, eased down through third man, opening the blade, which resulted in a controlled outside edge

The momentum is starting to build with Canada

13.3

Odhiambo to Barnett, FOUR, that won't win the "Pretty shot of the year" award, an ill-timed pull, however a four's a four - that's three in succession - and that races away behind square

13.4

Odhiambo to Barnett, no run, oh, a touch of swing there

13.5

Odhiambo to Barnett, FOUR, much better timing and another four - this time clipped away well off the toes and that races behind backward square; nothing wrong with that shot at all

13.6

Odhiambo to Barnett, FOUR, scorching over closes with another boundary, this time a rocket of a straight drive through mid-off

Quality over from Canada's perspective - 20 off it, with five (mainly) crisp fours.

"Well folks," begins Andrew Looney Tunes McGlashan, "it looks like there has been a bit of confusion over the Canada team. Most sources early on had George Codrington in the XI but it now appears Qaiser Ali was included. Sorry about that." Indeed.

End of over 14 (20 runs) Canada 72/1 (RR: 5.14)

    • GEF Barnett 41 (48b 9x4)
    • A Bagai 7 (12b 1x4)
    • NN Odhiambo 2-0-26-0
    • PJ Ongondo 6-0-26-0
14.1

Ongondo to Bagai, 1 run, played off the back foot through point

14.2

Ongondo to Barnett, no run, thinks about swivel-pulling that off the back foot, and plays the shot without much power

14.3

Ongondo to Barnett, OUT, what a catch! What a catch. One of those you never want to be under - the ball was hit high - and higher - downwind from a mistimed pull. Mishra takes his time to have a quick glance to see where the rope is, takes a few steps back, and allows himself six or seven inches inside the rope, taking the ball at head height, palms upwards

GEF Barnett c Mishra b Ongondo 41 (65m 50b 9x4 0x6) SR: 82.00

The fireworks have fizzled, then. Barnett took his time to play himself in, was electric, and then imploded. Here's Ian Billcliff, who knows a thing or two about hitting... or at least it will be, because that's drinks for the moment.

Poor former staffer Berksy, meanwhile - one of his (wisely unnamed) Easyjet colleagues replies: "You can have Andy Berks back if you like!"

14.4

Ongondo to Bagai, no run, a hint of swing away and that's left alone first up

14.5

Ongondo to Bagai, 2 runs, short, a touch of width, and Billcliff's quickly on to that one, crashing it away off the back foot through point

14.6

Ongondo to Bagai, 1 run, shorter, still wide, and that's dinked behind point off the back foot

Unsurprisingly the final Powerplay will be taken now, but perhaps more surprisingly is the introduction of spin: it's Hiren Varaiya

End of over 15 (4 runs) Canada 76/2 (RR: 5.06)

    • A Bagai 11 (16b 1x4)
    • IS Billcliff 0 (0b)
    • PJ Ongondo 7-0-30-1
    • NN Odhiambo 2-0-26-0
15.1

Varaiya to Bagai, FOUR, not the best start - drops that one short, wide, and on this slow surface the ball sits up and requests, nay begs, to be smacked through cover and Bagai duly obliges

15.2

Varaiya to Bagai, no run, better, much better, fuller and that's defended quietly

15.3

Varaiya to Bagai, no run, loop this time, and full; that's well bowled again

15.4

Varaiya to Bagai, no run, defended off the back foot into the covers

15.5

Varaiya to Bagai, no run, more defence

15.6

16.1

Ongondo to Billcliff, no run, oooh, that nips off the seam away from the batsman who nibbles at it, but his bat bites fresh air

16.2

Ongondo to Billcliff, no run, defended this time

16.3

Ongondo to Billcliff, no run, left alone

16.4

Ongondo to Billcliff, 1 wide, left alone again

16.4

Ongondo to Billcliff, no run, defended this time

16.5

Ongondo to Billcliff, no run, oh, that one didn't carry - a big edge to second slip. Tikolo immediately makes a motion to say the ball bounced

16.6

Ongondo to Billcliff, no run, a play and a miss there

Some good bowling by Ongondo here

End of over 17 (1 run) Canada 81/2 (RR: 4.76)

    • A Bagai 15 (22b 2x4)

17.1

Varaiya to Bagai, no run, on the money - well he is a trainee accountant - and only defence will do

17.2

Varaiya to Bagai, no run, on the spot and the batsman shoulders arms, allowing the ball to rush on to the keeper - well judged

17.3

Varaiya to Bagai, no run, defended to gully off the back foot

17.4

Varaiya to Bagai, no run, dabbed to point

17.5

Varaiya to Bagai, no run, walks into the shot, looking to on-drive, but doesn't quite time the ball

17.6

Varaiya to Bagai, no run, stabs the ball into the ground after failing to move his feet in a cut shot

18.1

Odhiambo to Billcliff, no run, walks forward to defend on the front foot, standing tall

18.2

Odhiambo to Billcliff, no run, short, wide and that keeps low, allowing Billcliff the chance to cut that forcefully to point; he misses out, though, crashing it down into the ground and straight to the fielder

18.3

Odhiambo to Billcliff, 2 runs, plays that one off the toes behind square

18.4

Odhiambo to Billcliff, no run, on leg stump and there's an ambitious shout for Parker, who is unmoved other than to shake his head - that was easily going down the leg-side

18.5

Odhiambo to Billcliff, 1 no ball, oversteps with the effort

18.5

Odhiambo to Billcliff, no run, comes forward to defend, pushing that one into the covers

18.6

Odhiambo to Billcliff, FOUR, a touch too full and Billcliff times that exquisitely very straight, just to say on the on-side

End of over 19 (7 runs) Canada 88/2 (RR: 4.63)

19.3

Varaiya to Bagai, no run, on the dot, and that's defended

19.4

Varaiya to Bagai, no run, more defence again

19.5

Varaiya to Bagai, no run, tidy bowling, giving nothing away

19.6

Varaiya to Bagai, no run, "wait" is the wise decision as the end of the Powerplays is brought up with a tickle to gully

Jimmy Kamande comes on to bowl. Yes, that's true - we were given the wrong team, so he was in the starting XI and therefore can bowl! This means, for some reason, scoring will be delayed, but bear with us

End of over 20 (maiden) Canada 88/2 (RR: 4.40)

Our man on the inside, Kenya and Cricinfo's Abeed Janmohamed, tells me that Kamande is the joker of the side. He's got a serious purpose, here, though

20.3

Tikolo to Mulla, no run, Ongondo makes no mistake this time and it's smiles all round for the guys in green. Another huge swipe and Mulla doesn't muller that, sending it high and straight over to Ongondo at short third man who breaks into a broad beam as he holds on

46.3

Tikolo to Mulla, OUT, outside off and that's driven without much power to cover

AA Mulla c Ongondo b Tikolo 25 (45m 39b 0x4 1x6) SR: 64.10

46.4

Tikolo to Dhaniram, no run, that turns away from the lefthander who leaves it

Tikolo to Dhaniram, 2 runs, driven forward

46.6

Tikolo to Dhaniram, SIX, shot! The ball pitches outside off and that's taken from there over in front of midwicket with a flat-bat smash. Nice!

Odoyo back into the attack now

47.1

Odoyo to Bhatti, 1 run, short and that's worked easily enough down to third man

47.2

Odoyo to Dhaniram, no run, big heave at that one to one which pitches wide - completely misses

47.3

Odoyo to Dhaniram, 1 run, wide again and that's hit with some power - but not quite timed - to the sweeper on the off-side boundary

47.4

Odoyo to Bhatti, OUT, horrible flash - stepping back to that one for a waft. But, hello, some even more horrible cricket... The keeper lobbed it back to the bowler, but it went over his head, and the covering fielder returned to the keeper. Meanwhile, Bhatti had decided the run was on, but was left stranded when Dhaniram refused to set off. Oh dear

U Bhatti run out 1 (4m 2b 0x4 0x6) SR: 50.00

47.5

Odoyo to Cummins, no run, more trouble - driven off the back foot to cover and the non-striker is nearly run out without facing a ball, but there's a miss

47.6

Odoyo to Cummins, no run, moves on to his back foot and dabs that into the covers

End of over 48 (2 runs) Canada 185/8 (RR: 3.85)

48.1

Tikolo to Dhaniram, 1 run, on the button, and driven easily to cover

48.2

Tikolo to Cummins, 1 run, pitches straight, turns to leg and that's worked for an easy single into the leg-side

48.3

Tikolo to Dhaniram, OUT, reverse sweep straight to third man, more confusion, and Cummins is going after that - he was well stranded at the non-striker's end

AC Cummins run out 1 (5m 3b 0x4 0x6) SR: 33.33

48.4

Tikolo to Dhaniram, no run, drops that one wide and the batsman has time to run that one down to third man

48.5

Tikolo to Dhaniram, no run, on the money and that's defended

48.6

Tikolo to Dhaniram, no run, ooh, a thick inside edge nearly dribbles back on to the stumps, but misses and it's collected by Ouma

End of over 49 (2 runs) Canada 187/9 (RR: 3.81)

    • S Dhaniram 23 (31b 1x4 1x6)

49.1

Odoyo to Osinde, no run, oh, dabs at that one which flirts through to the keeper, popping just a touch on its way

49.2

Odoyo to Osinde, 1 run, nips back in off the seam, sits up a bit, and that's dabbed to third man

49.3

Odoyo to Dhaniram, 2 runs, slower ball clubbed away on the on-side, and there's a casual one-handed pick-up inside the boundary

49.4

Odoyo to Dhaniram, FOUR, thin edge, full toss, and that boundary will be well received, even though it's not where he had meant to send it

49.5

Odoyo to Dhaniram, FOUR, picked up off the toes and that's flicked uppishly behind square

49.6

Odoyo to Dhaniram, 1 run, OUT, short, on leg, and that's worked out to cover - the run-out was a direct hit but he way out; just trying to get one final boost

H Osinde run out 1 (4m 2b 0x4 0x6) SR: 50.00

Kenya's openers, Maurice Ouma and David Obuya, are taking to the field, while Davison sets his men about the field. Umar Bhatti, the left-arm seamer, is to open the bowling.

*** So Canada have set Kenya 200 to win. Tikolo's decision to field now looks a good one, although his comment about the moisture rather suggests he was expecting his seamers to do the job. As it was, it was the spinners who were the class act, really placing the squeeze on Canada who never really got going on a slow pitch once Barnett had fallen for 41.
