ICC World Cup - 4th match, Group B

Bermuda v Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka won by 243 runs

Right, here we go! All set for play. The umpires, Daryl Harper and Ian Howell, are in their positions. Sri Lanka's openers, Upul Tharanga and Sanath Jayasuriya, are set. Kevin Hurdle, standing some six-and-a-half feet tall, has the new ball. One slip in place. Buckle up! * * * * * * Hello, hello, wherever you are, and welcome to Cricinfo's live coverage of game four of the 2007 World Cup. I'm Jamie Alter, and I'll be bringing you the commentary of this Sri-Lanka bermuda match, the first for the two Group B rivals.

Toss: Sri Lanka have won the toss, and have decided to bat.

Teams: Sri Lanka: 1 WU Tharanga, 2 ST Jayasuriya, 3 KC Sangakkara (wk), 4 DPMD Jayawardene (capt), 5 LPC Silva, 6 TM Dilshan, 7 RP Arnold, 8 MF Maharoof, 9 WPUJC Vaas, 10 M Muralitharan, 11 SL Malinga.

Bermuda: 1 DA Minors (wk), 2 CJ Smith, 3 JJ Tucker, 4 IH Romaine (capt), 5 OL Pitcher, 6 DL Hemp, 7 LOB Cann, 8 S Mukuddem, 9 DCC Borden, 10 RDM Leverock, 11 KAD Hurdle.

The pitch: The surface is hard, dry and expected to spin a little later. Its 'stinking hot' out there, as David Lloyd so bluntly put it in his pitch report. The Queen's Park Oval isn't to capacity, but there is a smattering of Sri Lankan supporters taking shelter from the sun.

The scenario:
There's been a bit of a build-up to this match, with Sri Lanka boosted by the return of their two biggest bowlers ever, Chaminda Vaas and Muttiah Muralitharan. Both were members of that 1996 World Cup-winning side, and have loads of experience. Sanath Jayasuriya, another seasoned veteran who starred 11 years ago, has publicly aired his hopes of a repeat title triumph, while Kumar Sangakkara said Sri Lanka's youngsters are ready to fire. Many pundits also feel Sri Lanka have a good shot at this year's tournament.

And then there's Bermuda, World Cup debutants. Needless to say, this is a very, very big day for Bermuda. What excitement for them! For many of you, myself included, it will be the first time to get a look at the portly left-arm spinner Dwayne Leverock, who got the wickets of Kevin Pietersen and Paul Collingwood in a warm-up game against England. Bermuda have some happy memories of this patch, playing - and narrowly winning - their debut one-day international against Canada here last year.

Captains' view:
Mahela Jayawardene feels his side are capable of winning the World Cup for a second time, and also feels that the ICC is right to allow associate member nations to take their chance. "Playing against the top teams is the only way for these nations to improve. Like Sri Lanka, 20 years on and one of these minor cricket nations might win a World Cup."

Irvine Romaine acknowledges the selection difficulties Bermuda face when pitted against more experienced nations. "The whole country of Bermuda could fit in one of the stadiums in India, as the island consists of 60,000 people. Our pool to choose from for the World Cup really consisted of 30-35 quality people who can compete at this level. But the guys are here to play good cricket and to represent their country well."

As we await the start, do feel free to peruse through Rahul Bhattacharya's match preview from Port-of-Spain.

Saleem Mukuddem, the most economical bowler of the day, comes on for a final spell. An accountant by profession, the on-air commentator, Ian Bishop, informs us.

47.6

Mukuddem to Silva, 2 runs, fuller down the legs, and he paddles it down to fine leg to bring up a good half-century in good time, excellently done on World Cup debut

End of over 48 (11 runs) Sri Lanka 305/4 (RR: 6.35)

Last over coming up...

49.1

Mukuddem to Silva, no run, back of a length outside off stump, he makes room and looks to cut, misses, and Bermuda will gladly take the dot ball

49.2

Mukuddem to Silva, 1 run, dropped! Good length outside off stump, he frees the arms, slashes, and the thick edge spirals up in the air and Cann in the deep at third man fails to latch on

49.3

Mukuddem to Maharoof, OUT, but not this time! Maharoof has a lusty swing across the line, doesnt time it all that well, and Hemp out in the deep holds his nerve, judges it to perfection, and gobbles it up down there at deep square leg

MF Maharoof c Hemp b Mukuddem 9 (6m 5b 2x4 0x6) SR: 180.00

49.4

Mukuddem to Silva, 2 runs, good length outside off stump, he sweeps from where it lands past square leg out to the man on the ropes, for a couple

49.5

Mukuddem to Silva, 1 run, banged in short and wide, he makes room and uppercuts over point for one out to the sweeper

49.6

Mukuddem to Arnold, 2 runs, fullish delivery outside off stump, he makes room and drives down to long-off for a couple, and Sri Lanka end up with a very healthy 321 for 6

Thanks to Jayawardene's 85 - a very welcome score for someone who's been out for form for months now - Sangakkara's 76 and Silva's unbeaten 55 on World Cup debut, Sri Lanka have coasted away to a great score. Bermuda have their task cut out for them, and its highly unlikely that they'll get there. For the minnows, Saleem Mukuddem was the pick of the bowlers, getting some movement and most importantly maintaining a good line and length, and finishing with 2 for 50. Leverock picked up 1 for 68, while the wayward Hurdle managed two wickets after a horror opening spell.

Do join us in about 40 minutes - thats 13:54 local, 17:54 GMT - for Bermuda's reply.
