ICC World Cup, 7th Match, Group A: Netherlands v South Africa at Basseterre, Mar 16, 2007
ICC World Cup - 7th match, Group A
South Africa won by 221 runs
Played at Warner Park, Basseterre, St Kitts (neutral venue)
16 March 2007 (50-over match)

Toss Netherlands have won the toss and have asked South Africa to bat.

I am Sriram Veera and shall bring you the day's proceedings.

News filters in that it would be a 40-overs game. 8 overs per bowler. Powerplay will be 10 , 5 and 1. Bright and sunny conditions!

And some of you have queried why the overs are being reduced instead of using the reserve day. The rule is reserve day will be used only if the game is curtailed or if 20 overs are not possible in both innings.

"Every effort will be made to complete the match on the scheduled day with any necessary reduction in overs taking place and only if the minimum number of overs necessary to constitute a match cannot be bowled on the scheduled day will the match be completed on the reserve day."

More delay. We are now looking at 12.00 pm start. The pitch inspection will be at 11.20 local time. Umpire Mark Benson expects it could be a 38-overs per side game.

Update The next pitch inspection will be at 10.30. Still problems with the drainage in the outfield, it would appear. The weather is perfect for quick drying though, so the start can't be too far off now.

Update from Andrew Inspection at 9.30 local time. The sun is now beating down and the covers are off, but a lot of standing water still to be mopped up. Could be looking at an 11 o'clock start, I reckon.

Hello! Welcome to South Africa v Netherlands game. Some bad news right away. Rain delays start. Torrential overnight rain in St Kitts had left a sodden outfield at Warner Park and mopping operations are on.

Andrew Miller, our man at the ground spoke to Andy Atkinson, the ICC Grounds Consultant. "Realistically we are looking at an 11.00 start time at the earliest [play was scheduled to get underway at 9.30 local time]. We are working with limited equipment, and it also depends on the willingness of the teams to play.

"South Africa want to get started," Atkinson added, "but already one or two of the Dutch have been looking a bit uncertainly at the conditions. They know their gameplan, and they know that with two wash-outs, they'd only need to beat Scotland to qualify for the next round."

So ... nothing to do but wait.

37.2

ten Doeschate to Boucher, FOUR, He's done it. The fastest fifty in World Cups. He goes past Brian Lara's 23-ball fifty against Canada in 2003. Down the leg side and clipped superbly behind square for four

39.2

van Troost to Boucher, 1 run, Short ball and Boucher goes for the pull, edge flies to fine leg for a single

39.3

van Troost to Kallis, 2 runs, Kallis lofts over extra-cover but the fielder there can't get to a tough chance. Ball trickles for two. It's South Africa's highest score in World Cup history. And yes, we're still in the 40th over.

39.4

van Troost to Kallis, 5 wides, Short ball and Kallis can't even get to it. It's so erratic. Wide called and the ball races away to the fine-leg fence

39.4

van Troost to Kallis, SIX, CRACK! Way way over midwicket. Kallis swings neatly, brings out the pendulum arc and watches as the ball soars somewhere in the direction of Cape Town. This is the most sixes in an ODI innings. Trust me, it doesn't get better (worse if you're Dutch)

39.5

van Troost to Kallis, SIX, Take that! Bring out the photocopier and change the orientation a bit. Kallis goes straighter this time and pumels yet another mighty hit. Oh van Troost, what's next?

39.6

van Troost to Kallis, SIX, And that's the way to finish! Short ball and pulled away over midwicket for the last of the sixes. Kallis finishes in style and South Africa end on a mammoth 354 in 40 overs. What a mighty mess.

There's not much to say. Never before have so many SIXES been smashed in a one-dayer, never before has anyone clattered 36 in a one-day over, never before has a World Cup fifty come faster, never before have so many batsmen devoured so many bowlers with so little effort. South Africa have created one royal mess here at Warner Park and it will take some beating. Join us in ten minutes for the rest of the action.

Dhaval is wondering. "I couldn't understand these minnows. Why they are selecting field althought they won the toss!" I guess they think it is lesser embarrassment then batting first and getting shot out for a very cheap score. And it's arguable which is more embarrassing. Television companies would like the minnow's choice of bowling first!

Gert is not feeling too chuffed up. "Hi Gert here from Holland, pretty ashamed here at the moment. Bet I would never get hit for 6 sixes in an over. What ridiculous bowling!!!!"
