ICC World Cup - 9th match, Group D

Ireland v Pakistan

Ireland won by 3 wickets (with 32 balls remaining) (D/L method)

9.25am Toss news Trent Johnston called correctly and sent Pakistan in, trying to put some pressure on them on a green-top. "We're going to come out here and give it our best," he says.

Two changes for Pakistan - The pace bowlers Azhar Mahmood and Mohammad Sami are in because of the wicket.

1 Mohammad Hafeez, 2 Imran Nazir, 3 Younis Khan, 4 Mohammad Yousuf, 5 Inzamam-ul-Haq (capt), 6 Shoaib Malik, 7 Kamran Akmal (wk), 8 Mohammad Sami, 9 Azhar Mahmood, 10 Iftikhar Anjum, 11 Umar Gul

Ireland Andre Botha, Jeremy Bray, Trent Johnston (capt), Dave Langford-Smith, Kyle McCallan (wk), Eoin Morgan, Kevin O'Brien, Niall O'Brien, William Porterfield, Boyd Rankin, Andrew White.

9.20am Here's the pitch report There are lots of cracks in the pitch, but they're not very wide, and there's a lot of grass about, more so than on the first two tracks here, which will favour the fast bowlers, and particularly the side batting first.

8.30am Happy St Patrick's Day one and all and welcome along to coverage of Ireland's match against Pakistan in Jamaica. I'm Jenny Thompson and will be joined in the commentary box (well, office) by Martin Williamson, and we'll have Will Luke providing the bulletin throughout the day for an overall picture.

Now, you'd be disappointed if I didn't use an 'Irish eyes' cliché early doors, so I won't waste any time: Irish eyes were positively beaming after the Zimbabwe tie but now they're firmly focussed on Pakistan.

While an Ireland victory today would represent something of a giant-killing, the momentum is all with them: their heads are high, it's their national day and, as the underdogs, there's of course less pressure. And Pakistan are still reeling from a bad loss at the hands of West Indies; nevertheless, they will naturally be the favourites.

We'll bring you the team news when we have it, and a pitch report, too. We can tell you about the weather - it's hot and cloudy and there's a 30% chance of rain today with scattered showers expected.

Meanwhile, if you haven't already, read Bob Woolmer's thoughts on the clash today and how he thinks that Ireland represent a "serious banana skin fixture". I'm liking the idea of serious bananas.

0.1

Langford-Smith to Imran Nazir, 1 run, short, wide, and that's crashed away on one knee behind point

0.2

Langford-Smith to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 wide, plenty of shape away - but you can have too much of a good swing, and that's gone wide

0.2

Langford-Smith to Mohammad Hafeez, (no ball) FOUR, overstepping and that's driven nicely through mid-off for the first boundary

0.2

Langford-Smith to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, driven to mid-on and there's some confusion between the Pakistan batsman as Johnston slides over to pick that up

0.3

Langford-Smith to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, a hint of swing away has the batsman squaring up and then hiding his bat behind his pad on the front foot

0.4

Langford-Smith to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, another good delivery, false shot, a little bit of a dab at that one, feet trapped in the crease

0.5

Langford-Smith to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, nice arc of away swing there, full, and the batsman attempts to drive it to mid-off

0.6

Langford-Smith to Mohammad Hafeez, OUT, gone! Ireland strike and there's cheers all round the ground. Jubilation for Langford-Smith with a classic paceman's delivery, banana swing away and that clips the outside edge, Niall O'Brien takes an easy catch. Great start for the Irish and there's a conga going on already (in the stands that is)

Mohammad Hafeez c †NJ O'Brien b Langford-Smith 4 (5m 6b 1x4 0x6) SR: 66.66

Younis Khan is at the crease already as Boyd Rankin prepares to open from the other end

Imran Nazir    1* (1b)

1.1

Rankin to Imran Nazir, no run, oh, and that's hurt Imran, a straight ball rising slightly and that takes the edge of the bat, clattering into his pelvis above his left leg. Ouch. The physio runs on. Speaking of running, there was a whole gaggle of fielders waiting to swoop on that one - Ireland are well up for this

1.2

Rankin to Imran Nazir, no run, slower ball, on leg, and the man rushes in from short square leg

1.3

Rankin to Imran Nazir, FOUR, ah! A flashingly thick outside edge just evades the outstretched fingertips of a leaping second slip

1.4

Rankin to Imran Nazir, no run, good reply from Rankin, banging that one in past the outside edge just outside off

1.5

Rankin to Imran Nazir, no run, the bowler stands tall and brings that one down from a great height, the ball pitching outside off and carrying on through to the keeper down the off-side channel

1.6

Rankin to Imran Nazir, 1 run, a touch too short and wide and that's helped down to wide third man off the back foot

End of over 2 (5 runs) Pakistan 12/1
Imran Nazir    6* (7b 1x4)      WB Rankin    1-0-5-0
Younis Khan    0* (0b)      D Langford-Smith    1-0-7-1

A sparky start from Ireland who are leaping about all over the place and bright

2.1

Langford-Smith to Imran Nazir, no run, ooh, a thin inside edge onto the pad was what stood between Imran and being out lbw, there

2.2

Langford-Smith to Imran Nazir, no run, on middle-and-leg, the batsman bends over that one as he sends it to short square leg

2.3

Langford-Smith to Imran Nazir, no run, a bit of a nothing ball, too wide outside off stump to be of interest, plenty of swing of course, and that arcs on its merry way through to the keeper

2.4

Langford-Smith to Imran Nazir, no run, that one's fuller and straighter and the batsman leans into it in driving it to cover

2.5

Langford-Smith to Imran Nazir, no run, straight and balloons into the air off the pad and, oh, that one ever so nearly ran onto the stumps, kicked away by Imran at the last minute

2.6

Langford-Smith to Imran Nazir, 2 runs, oh! Dropped. Imran clattered that one right back at Langford-Smith and the ball cannoned into his outstretched clasping right hand. Agony

Pakistan could have easily lost a few more wickets in these early stages - chances being created left, right and centre. Ireland will have to keep their heads now and try to keep plugging away at the batsmen

3.1

Rankin to Younis Khan, 1 wide, wide down leg this time - no question on the call

3.1

Rankin to Younis Khan, no run, right up there pitching on off and that's driven to mid-on

3.2

Rankin to Younis Khan, no run, a very neat delivery, slinking right past Khan's outside edge at a fair height

3.3

Rankin to Younis Khan, OUT, gone! Good ball, banged in back of a length and pitching on off and catching out Khan, who sends a thick outside edge to first slip. Two wickets now for Pakistan and that's a big incision - Khan snapped up for a duck

Younis Khan c Botha b Rankin 0 (13m 3b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Two quick strikes for them but Ireland will have to keep their wits and not get too excited because here comes Mohammad Yousuf

3.4

Rankin to Mohammad Yousuf, 1 wide, down leg and Yousuf thinks about chasing that one down leg

3.4

Rankin to Mohammad Yousuf, no run, Yousuf not comfortable there in fending that straight one down

3.5

Rankin to Mohammad Yousuf, no run, worked to short midwicket

3.6

Rankin to Mohammad Yousuf, FOUR, effortless from Yousuf, one of his signature shots that, a mere flick of an extra cover drive and that's the tension immediately undone

End of over 4 (6 runs) Pakistan 20/2
Mohammad Yousuf    4* (3b 1x4)      WB Rankin    2-0-11-1
Imran Nazir    8* (13b 1x4)      D Langford-Smith    2-0-9-1

4.1

Langford-Smith to Imran Nazir, 2 runs, swing on that one, but fairly loose, and that's sweetly timed through cover

4.2

Langford-Smith to Imran Nazir, no run, right up there and stoutly defended outside off

4.3

Langford-Smith to Imran Nazir, 1 wide, the bowler's delivery arm strayed loose a bit there, sending the ball down leg

4.3

Langford-Smith to Imran Nazir, no run, much, much better - and that one nearly takes the edge. The arm was ramrod straight this time and the ball pops right up, almost cutting him in half as it cuts back. Lovely stuff

4.4

Langford-Smith to Imran Nazir, no run, more aerial movement and this one is left alone outside off

4.5

Langford-Smith to Imran Nazir, no run, zooms that one through the air again and that bends deliciously away from the righthander

4.6

Langford-Smith to Imran Nazir, 1 wide, let himself down again with another wide down leg

4.6

Langford-Smith to Imran Nazir, 1 run, it's all going on: this time the ball pops up and a leading edge flies just short - about a metre or so - of the man at point and they scamper a quick single

End of over 5 (5 runs) Pakistan 25/2
Imran Nazir    11* (19b 1x4)      D Langford-Smith    3-0-14-1
Mohammad Yousuf    4* (3b 1x4)      WB Rankin    2-0-11-1

5.1

Rankin to Imran Nazir, 1 wide, another wide down leg and they're letting the pressure off with each and every extra

5.1

Rankin to Imran Nazir, no run, better - just placed on a good length outside off, wide enough to leave

5.2

Rankin to Imran Nazir, no run, short and straight but the batsman doesn't capitalise, trying to rush that off his hips to midwicket, not timing it

5.3

Rankin to Imran Nazir, 1 wide, another wide, another one down leg. This is a shame

5.3

Rankin to Imran Nazir, 1 run, better, on off, and the batsman plays an unconvincing stroke to wide third man, his bottom hand flying up off the bat as he doesn't quite control it properly

5.4

Rankin to Mohammad Yousuf, no run, good delivery, on the money outside off and plenty of late swing carrying it through to the keeper's right - extra bounce, but Yousuf happy to leave well alone

5.5

Rankin to Mohammad Yousuf, 1 wide, still struggling to control the swing - this one was too wide down the off this time

5.5

Rankin to Mohammad Yousuf, no run, nice height, steepling past Yousuf's face and threatening to lick his grille

5.6

Rankin to Mohammad Yousuf, no run, gentle delivery this time, just easing down the off-side channel and rising - like a Harmison ball - on its way through

End of over 6 (4 runs) Pakistan 29/2
Mohammad Yousuf    4* (6b 1x4)      WB Rankin    3-0-15-1
Imran Nazir    12* (22b 1x4)      D Langford-Smith    3-0-14-1

6.1

Langford-Smith to Imran Nazir, no run, aw, curiosity nearly killed the bat there - slashing away from his body with a cover drive that just fails to shave the edge

6.2

Langford-Smith to Imran Nazir, 1 wide, frustrating leg-side stuff once more

6.2

Langford-Smith to Imran Nazir, no run, Imran gets bat on that but bounces into space behind the wicket

6.3

Langford-Smith to Imran Nazir, no run, regulation line-and-length delivery forces the batsman to present the full face in a standard front-foot defensive

6.4

Langford-Smith to Imran Nazir, no run, Andrew White's hurt his left hand at cover, diving to stop Imran's flashing cover drive. He shakes his hand in the air and carries on

6.5

Langford-Smith to Imran Nazir, no run, big shout for lbw, but that one would have gone over - and there was a lick of an inside edge, too

6.6

Langford-Smith to Imran Nazir, 1 run, slower delivery slightly misdirected and that's eased in front of midwicket

End of over 7 (2 runs) Pakistan 31/2
Imran Nazir    13* (28b 1x4)      D Langford-Smith    4-0-16-1
Mohammad Yousuf    4* (6b 1x4)      WB Rankin    3-0-15-1

7.1

Rankin to Imran Nazir, no run, super ball, just back of a length and the bounce disconcerts the batsman who dangles his bat away from the body on the back foot

7.2

Rankin to Imran Nazir, no run, under pressure again and he slashes over that one with a cut shot that slices only air

7.3

Rankin to Imran Nazir, no run, short and pulled flat in front of midwicket, the batsman getting into a good position, picking up the length early and timing it well

7.4

Rankin to Imran Nazir, FOUR, flashes at that off the back foot, fishing high in the air, and so high and away from the body it's a wide

7.5

Rankin to Imran Nazir, 1 wide, worked off the back foot to midwicket

7.6

Rankin to Imran Nazir, no run, worked off the back foot to midwicket

7.7

8.2

Langford-Smith to Mohammad Yousuf, 2 runs, worked into midwicket this time

8.3

Langford-Smith to Mohammad Yousuf, 1 wide, wide down off - and that was almost worth two wides it was so wide

8.3

Langford-Smith to Mohammad Yousuf, no run, good ball left alone outside off

8.4

Langford-Smith to Mohammad Yousuf, no run, the bowler grunts with the delivery effort there and Yousuf leaves it alone outside off

8.5

Langford-Smith to Mohammad Yousuf, no run, Umpire Bowden thinks about calling a wide for that one down off, but lets the bowler get away with it

8.6

Langford-Smith to Mohammad Yousuf, no run, played on the front foot with a solid defensive

End of over 9 (3 runs) Pakistan 39/2
Mohammad Yousuf    6* (12b 1x4)      D Langford-Smith    5-0-19-1
Imran Nazir    17* (34b 2x4)      WB Rankin    4-0-20-1

9.1

Rankin to Imran Nazir, 1 wide, goes down leg and that's yet another wide - this has been a real downfall for Ireland so far

9.1

Rankin to Imran Nazir, no run, pushed up there, straight, and that's worked into the leg side, but not entirely convincingly

9.2

Rankin to Imran Nazir, no run, walks on to his back foot to nibble that one into the covers for a cheeky single

9.3

Rankin to Imran Nazir, 1 run, worked off the legs into midwicket and the batsmen have to be quick to make that tight single. Kevin O'Brien did well to race round from square leg, release quickly and nearly take the non-striker's end sticks, though Imran would have been safe

9.4

Rankin to Mohammad Yousuf, no run, played down off the back foot

9.5

Rankin to Mohammad Yousuf, 1 wide, swings away down off and that's just to say wide - they all count, though

9.5

Rankin to Mohammad Yousuf, no run, straight, back of a length, and Yousuf's not sure where the edge has gone as that crashes into him - the ball dribbled down square on the off side, safe enough

9.6

Rankin to Mohammad Yousuf, 1 run, defended easily enough

The second Powerplay is taken immediately

End of over 10 (4 runs) Pakistan 43/2

10.1

Langford-Smith to Mohammad Yousuf, no run, good delivery and Yousuf can only defend that one

10.2

Langford-Smith to Mohammad Yousuf, 2 runs, uppish drive but that's found the gap through point and there's some quick running for the two, but Yousuf declines a third so that he can retain the strike

Yousuf getting into his ominous groove now

10.3

Langford-Smith to Mohammad Yousuf, no run, a good ball, rising and swinging away from the righthander who leaves it

10.4

Langford-Smith to Mohammad Yousuf, no run, fuller, nearly yorker length, and that's well dug out off the toes, the batsman pressing forward into the shot

10.5

Langford-Smith to Mohammad Yousuf, 1 run, good delivery, short and the batsman does well to adjust for the swing and work it down away from the two slips

10.6

Langford-Smith to Imran Nazir, FOUR, a mere flick of the wrist through midwicket brings up Pakistan's fifty

You can just feel Pakistan picking up the momentum now, going through the gears. They're in about third right now after stalling early on. Botha into the attack now

12.1

Johnston to Mohammad Yousuf, no run, much better line immediately, and that's left alone outside off

12.2

12.3

Johnston to Mohammad Yousuf, no run, driven to cover and that's a quick single

12.4

Johnston to Mohammad Yousuf, FOUR, wide outside off and that's driven away strongly through cover

12.5

12.6

17.3

Botha to Imran Nazir, no run, more quiet defence - enjoyable stuff from Botha

17.4

18.3

Johnston to Shoaib Malik, 1 wide, down leg

18.3

Johnston to Shoaib Malik, no run, that's better - he adjusts to come down off this time, but has ever so slightly overcompensated and as such the ball can be easily left alone

18.4

It's not all good news for the Irish. Although they beat Italy at rugby, France whupped the dismal Scots and so pipped the Ireland to the top of the Six Nations table. England are now playing the Welsh and need to beat them by 57 points to deny the French the title ... but at the moment Wales are even worse at rugby than they are at cricket, so it could happen. Meanwhile, back at the cricket ...

End of over 45 (maiden) Pakistan 131/9

Iftikhar Anjum    7* (41b)      WK McCallan    5-1-11-1

McCallan to Umar Gul, no run, a good bit of loop there but Gul comes forward to get over it

McCallan to Umar Gul, OUT, that's it! Gul has gone. He went for the slash over to deep midwicket but it fell too short and the fielder waited under it for a while before taking the catch safely

Umar Gul c sub (JF Mooney) b McCallan 1 (8m 13b 0x4 0x6) SR: 7.69

1.50pm Out come the umpires - the Irish openers were waiting for them pitchside, while the Pakistan side have been stretching and throwing balls to each other for almost 20 minutes. Prediction time? Pakistan to win by 22 runs ... the pitch is spiced up and I fancy Gul to get among the top order, especially with so many left handers.

1.45pm The Pakistanis are standing watching the umpires, who finally signal for the covers to be pulled off and we will get play in two or three minutes. The stumps are being hammered in and we're almost ready to rumble ...

1.40pm Inzamam is leading the warm-ups as they wait for the batsmen to emerge. The bowlers look fired up, but Inzie is not the kind of captain to be charging round and geeing his players up ... he's far more quiet than that.

The pitch remains covered as there has been a touch of rain over the break and the officials are standing there looking at the sky ... all a bit surreal as the sun is out!

1.35pm Welcome back to the second half of what promises to be a remarkable match. Can Pakistan turn things around and placate their public - who are, judging by the volume of feedback we have received in the last hour, close to apoplexy - or will the Irish record a sensational win, one which will eliminate Pakistan and almost certainly book their own place ... barring a major upset by Zimbabwe. And after England's rugby side decided to chuck egg over our collective faces, at least they have fought back against Wales ... anyhow, enough rugby ...back to the drama in Jamaica.

1.20pm Usman's email rather sums up the thousands we have received so far today. "It is the darkest day for Pakistan cricket which most of us knew was coming. Simply pathetic. Inzy, Woolmer, Younis, Yousuf I think its time that you guys gather your team and leave Pakistan cricket for good as if you cannot take any pressure then you are not good enough." Imagine how much worse it will be if Pakistan actually lose ...

Pakistan have been dismissed for 132. Extras top scored with 29, Akmal the 'real' highest scorer with just 27.
