ICC World Cup - 11th match, Group C

Canada v England

England won by 51 runs

9.30am The pitch has been rolled from the last time it was used and it should play slow and fairly low. Ed Joyce is just asking for his guard as Anderson Cummins prepares to take first dart.

9.05am Canada have won the toss and stuck England into bat, John Davison hoping to take advantage of some early movement. But back to the England team news; Ravi Bopara replaces Flintoff, yet Michael Vaughan was very tight-lipped about the situation at the toss. "We just want to get on with this match." Life is, of course, a carnival but you've got to know when to party...

So England line up like this: <1 Ed Joyce, 2 Michael Vaughan (capt), 3 Ian Bell, 4 Kevin Pietersen, 5 Paul Collingwood, 6 Ravi Bopara, 7 Jamie Dalrymple, 8 Paul Nixon (wk), 9 Liam Plunkett, 10 James Anderson, 11 Monty Panesar.

And Canada look like this: Canada have 1 Geoff Barnett, 2 Abdool Samad, 3 Ashish Bagai (wk), 4 Ian Billcliff, 5 John Davison (capt), 6 Desmond Chumney, 7 Ashif Mulla, 8 Sunil Dhaniram, 9 Austin Codrington, 10 Umar Bhatti, 11 Anderson Cummins.

Canada were pretty easily beaten by Kenya the other day and should present no problems for England today, at least on paper, even if the Flintoff issue may have disrupted preparations.

Just to confirm, an official statement has it: "Andrew Flintoff has been left out of the team for a breach of team discipline. A further statement will be issued in due course." England captain Michael Vaughan said of Flintoff's situation: "We'll talk about it later today with the team management group. "He (Flintoff) is not here today, he's back at the team hotel."

9.00am Hello everyone and welcome to Cricinfo's coverage of this Group C match between England and Canada.

Firstly, some dramatic news from the England camp. Andrew Flintoff has been omitted from the starting XI after a breach of team discipline. The news comes amid reports he fell off a pedalo and got into difficulties in the water, hours after England lost their World Cup opener to New Zealand - at 4am, specifically.

England have refused to comment on the claim but four other players were fined for breaching team discipline after they were seen out drinking. Flintoff was warned several times in Australia - a touch of a drinking culture is apparently creeping back in to the England team. All of the Sky team are applauding the England management for clamping down - apart from Ian Botham, who thinks it's a bit of fun and "an overreaction".

4.5

Cummins to Joyce, FOUR, very wide and Joyce somehow manages to reach it, without really moving his feet, flaying it Trescothick-stylee through cover. Good effort from the fielder but he dragged the ball over the line and so, twas four

4.6

Cummins to Joyce, FOUR, ah, better from Joyce, moving his feet this time and spanking it through the same cover region. No chance of stopping that

End of over 5 (10 runs) England 31/0 (RR: 6.20)

Loving that

5.6

Bhatti to Vaughan, no run, better length, defended to cover

That's it from me. Here's Jenny "Big Ben" Thompson to take over. (Don't ask) Thanks, Willo. My one piece of advice today is never playing Twister dressed in a big cardboard box. Again, don't ask.

A message from Al, who clearly hasn't lost his sense of humour. "It's fine dropping Fred for disciplinary reasons, but they could have warned those of us with him in our World XI teams. The usual trend in sport - no thought for the fans!"

7.4

Bhatti to Joyce, no run, outside off again, Joyce plays that one off the back foot to the man short in at cover

7.5

Bhatti to Joyce, no run, similar ball, similar result, Joyce just pressing his bat down on that one

8.5

Cummins to Vaughan, 1 run, easily worked off the back foot to square - Vaughan thought about the second but Joyce wasn't so keen

8.6

Cummins to Joyce, 1 no ball, overstepping and that's symptomatic of Cummins' lack of rhythm out here - he's been spraying the ball around in search of his groove

8.6

Cummins to Joyce, 1 wide, down leg this time and that's the 14th extra already, Joyce chasing it round

8.6

Cummins to Joyce, no run, driven straight to cover, trying to pierce the field, but finding the fielder instead

Drinks out in the middle, while I try to remember the theme tune of Lovejoy.

PA Nixon    13* (6b 3x4)      GR Codrington    10-0-70-1
PD Collingwood    53* (44b 3x4 1x6)      AC Cummins    6-0-39-1

49.1

Cummins to Collingwood, FOUR, Collingwood again goes square and there's a touch of a misfield inside the boundary, Cummins's arms going above his head in frustration

49.2

Cummins to Collingwood, 2 runs, good running from Nixon to the danger end, having turned quickly and got home quite comfortably in the end

49.3

Cummins to Collingwood, 2 runs, down on one knee and clatters that one away from off stump through the leg side

49.4

Cummins to Collingwood, 1 run, doesn't really middle it this time and that goes into the midwicket area - Nixon calls him back for the second, but he turns the offer down

49.5

Cummins to Nixon, FOUR, poor line and Nixon flicks that over short fine-leg, really getting holding of that and pinging it, really

49.6

Cummins to Nixon, SIX, full toss and that's a good way for Nixon to end England's innings, with a straight six

Canada's innings is about to start but there's some dreadful news coming in from the Caribbean - Pakistan's coach Bob Woolmer has been found unconscious in his hotel room and has been taken to hospital.

Woolmer, 58, was discovered lying on the floor of his room, with vomit around him, at 10.45am and was taken by ambulance to hospital at 11.50am. "We have taken Bob Woolmer to the hospital and he is in the emergency ward," Pakistan team media manager Pervez Mir told AFP.

At 14.30 local time, Woolmer was still unconscious.

End of innings England made full use of the last ten overs there, to get their score up to something respectable, with 279 for 6. Collingwood and Nixon did well to pick up the momentum again on a slow wicket after a middle order wobble. Vaughan looked very fluent for his 45 and did well with Ed Joyce before his rash shot , one of several from England. Bopara impressed in his cameo, too. So, plenty of positives for England and they got in some vital batting, but still some work to do.
