ICC World Cup - 13th match, Group D

West Indies v Zimbabwe

West Indies won by 6 wickets (with 13 balls remaining)

Welcome to Cricinfo's coverage of this Group D clash between West Indies and Zimbabwe from Jamaica. I'm Andrew McGlashan and along with the delightful Jenny Thompson will be bringing up all the action.

The tournament is still trying to come to terms with the death of Bob Woolmer yesterday at Pakistan's team hotel. It has cast a shadow over the tournament which won't easily be lifted.

Today's match is the second outing of the tournament for West Indies, who opened with an impressive effort against Pakistan last Tuesday. A win today and they'll be safely into the Super Eights. Zimbabwe will still be wondering how they didn't managed to cross the line against Ireland, ending with a tie after needing 19 to win with five wickets in hand. Although defeat today won't end their World Cup it will leave them clinging to the hope of beating Pakistan and squeaking past Ireland on net run-rate.

Toss news West Indies have won the toss and decided to bowl

At the pitch report Michael Holding says: "This is another new track. It's in fairly good condition - there's not a great deal of grass, not too many cracks. The only thing on the pitch that makes it not as attractive as you would like, are a few stud marks, but they aren't too serious."

Brian Lara said: "The pitches so far in the tournament seem to have something for the fast bowlers in the morning. It is lasting 100 overs, so the batters will have an opportunity later on."

Prosper Utseya says he hopes for a turn around: "Everyone is looking forward to today. We are trying to improve throughout the tournament. There are areas we can work on and we will be looking to do that."

Team news West Indies are unchanged: 1 Chris Gayle, 2 Shivnarine Chanderpaul, 3 Ramnaresh Sarwan, 4 Marlon Samuels, 5 Brian Lara (capt), 6 Dwayne Smith, 7 Dwayne Bravo, 8 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 9 Daren Powell, 10 Jerome Taylor, 11 Corey Collymore

Zimbabwe have made three changes, Friday Kasteni, Tawanda Mupariwa and Anthony Ireland return

1 Vusi Sibanda, 2 Chamu Chibahabha, 3 Brendan Taylor (wk), 4 Stuart Matsikenyeri, 5 Sean Williams, 6 Friday Kasteni, 7 Elton Chigumbura, 8 Propser Utseya (capt), 9 Tawanda Mupariwa, 10 Chris Mpofu, 11 Anthony Ireland

There will be a minutes silence before play and flags will fly at half mast in memory of Bob Woolmer

Players are out there, we are nearly ready to go. Kasteni is opening with Sibanda and it'll be Daren Powell with the first over

0.1

Powell to Sibanda, no run, outside off stump, good carry through to Ramdin as Sibanda shoulders arms

0.2

Powell to Sibanda, no run, down the leg side, but clips the pad so Powell escapes a wide and a sharp take from Ramdin

0.3

Powell to Sibanda, no run, cracker! full pitched just outside off stump and Sibanda misses his drive

0.4

Powell to Sibanda, no run, bat on ball for the first time as this goes back down the pitch, good pace from Powell, hitting the high 80s (140kph)

0.5

Powell to Sibanda, no run, ooh, good leave as this nips back a long way off the seam and goes over the top of off stump

0.6

Powell to Sibanda, no run, played down into his pad, rolls onto the off side, fine opening over from Powell who bowled with real aggression

So Kasteni prepares to face his first ball in the World Cup as Jerome Taylor takes the ball

End of over 1 (maiden) Zimbabwe 0/0 (RR: 0.00)
V Sibanda    0* (6b)      DBL Powell    1-1-0-0
F Kasteni    0* (0b)

1.1

Taylor to Kasteni, OUT, and he only lasts one ball! full inswinger from Taylor and that would have been too much for better players. Kasteni was late on it, played all around the ball and it crashed into off stump. Great start for West Indies

F Kasteni b Taylor 0 (2m 1b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Kasteni was something of a controversial selection today as he'd only appeared in one previous ODI and has hardly played any cricket at all. The gamble hasn't paid off and Zimbabwe in early trouble against the moving ball. Here's Chamu Chibhabha

1.2

Taylor to Chibhabha, no run, gets behind this with a straight bat

1.3

Taylor to Chibhabha, no run, nearly another! Chibhabha goes fishing at an 85mph (136kph) outswinger and it almost takes the edge

1.4

Taylor to Chibhabha, 1 leg bye, Zimbabwe away with a leg-bye as he takes the thigh pad and goes down to long leg. Not sure there was a shot played at that but the umpire rules it was evasive action

1.5

Taylor to Sibanda, 1 run, loose drive and a thick outside flies down to third man through the gully, first run off the bat but not very convincing

1.6

Taylor to Chibhabha, no run, pushes forward, ball goes past the edge and another fine over. Both new-ball bowlers are right on the money from off today, making life tough for the Zimbabwe batsmen

End of over 2 (2 runs) Zimbabwe 2/1 (RR: 1.00)
CJ Chibhabha    0* (4b)      JE Taylor    1-0-1-1
V Sibanda    1* (7b)      DBL Powell    1-1-0-0

2.1

Powell to Sibanda, no run, short and wide, Sibanda goes for the cut but fails to connect, it was there for hitting but the execution wasn't quite right

2.2

Powell to Sibanda, OUT, and another! shocking piece of judgment from Sibanda who completely misreads the line and shoulders arms, only to watch his off stump go backwards. Powell on fire and Zimbabwe already sinking quickly...to Powell's credit that did nip back, but it was always too close to leave. There's been a few batsmen go without playing shots so far in the World Cup

V Sibanda b Powell 1 (9m 9b 0x4 0x6) SR: 11.11

Here's Brendon Taylor

2.3

Powell to Taylor, no run, ooh! lift and bounce for Powell and pace as well. It was slightly too wide so Taylor had time to drop his hands and watch it go past

2.4

Powell to Taylor, no run, on the stumps, pushed into the on side

2.5

Powell to Taylor, 1 run, squared up and it takes the outside edge down to third man, Taylor opens his account but nothing has come off the middle yet

2.6

Powell to Chibhabha, 1 run, good pace from Powell, 88mph (142kph) and Chibhabha jabs into the on side and scampers a single

End of over 3 (2 runs) Zimbabwe 4/2 (RR: 1.33)

BRM Taylor    1* (3b)      JE Taylor    1-0-1-1

3.1

Taylor to Chibhabha, no run, bat and pad into the on side, he looks an lbw candidate the way he falls across his stumps

3.2

Taylor to Chibhabha, no run, straightens on middle and met with a solid, straight bat

Brian Lara can afford to attack here, has two slips and a gully

3.3

Taylor to Chibhabha, 1 wide, way down the leg side, loose one from Taylor and very well gathered by Ramdin who has looked sharp early on with the gloves

3.3

Taylor to Chibhabha, no run, played off the back foot, down towards back point

3.4

Taylor to Chibhabha, no run, flashy! goes for the cut, but not enough width and the batsmen doing their best to find the edge

3.5

Taylor to Chibhabha, 1 run, plays this one well, soft hands off the front foot and squeezes it past gully down to third man

3.6

Taylor to Taylor, 1 run, pushed back into his crease and nudged into the on side

There hasn't been much to hit so far, excellent pressure from Powell and Taylor

End of over 4 (3 runs) Zimbabwe 7/2 (RR: 1.75)

CJ Chibhabha    2* (10b)      DBL Powell    2-1-2-1

4.1

Powell to Taylor, no run, played with an angled bat, down towards backward point

4.2

Powell to Taylor, no run, Taylor plays from the crease, not much footwork and gets a big inside edge into his pads

4.3

Powell to Taylor, no run, short and wide, but again the batsman misses out as a cut shot is played without conviction

4.4

Powell to Taylor, no run, that's the area, just outside off stump and it shapes away from Taylor, whose forward push is comprehensively beaten

4.5

Powell to Taylor, 1 wide, wide again, Taylor goes for a flashing drive and doesn't connect. Umpire Taufel stretches his arms

4.5

Powell to Taylor, 1 wide, Taylor just loosing his line a touch, too wide again but this time no shot offered

4.5

Powell to Taylor, no run, comfortable leave this time, but a better line

4.6

Powell to Taylor, no run, played from the crease, out to cover

5.1

Taylor to Chibhabha, no run, punched firmly to mid off

5.2

Taylor to Chibhabha, 1 leg bye, gets across his stumps and works backward of square

5.3

Taylor to Taylor, 1 run, full, searching for the swing and it threatens to move as it takes the outside edge down to third man

5.4

Taylor to Chibhabha, 1 wide, drifting well down the leg side, West Indies letting themselves down despite the early wickets

5.4

Taylor to Chibhabha, 1 run, back of a length, forced off the back foot off half the bat down to third man who is the busiest fielder at the moment

5.5

Taylor to Taylor, no run, back to the bowler

5.6

Taylor to Taylor, 1 wide, another wide, and this will be a problem for West Indies if they don't tighten up

5.6

Taylor to Taylor, 1 wide, oh dear, again, and the bowlers really losing the plot at the moment, perhaps trying too hard after the early wickets

5.6

Taylor to Taylor, no run, slightly better, but still no need to play and a long over comes to end

Powell to Chibhabha, no run, being forced back into the crease, plays at the top of the bounce down into the pitch

6.2

Powell to Chibhabha, FOUR, close! thick outside edge as he tries to drive off the back foot and he flies just past the outstretched hand of Dwayne Bravo at second slip...first boundary of the day

6.3

Powell to Chibhabha, no run, another airy drive, nearly takes the edge and played without any footwork

third slip in

6.4

Powell to Chibhabha, no run, no shot offered, good bounce

6.5

Powell to Chibhabha, no run, forced off the back foot to cover

6.6

Powell to Chibhabha, no run, plants his front foot down the pitch and lifts the bat high

Taylor's first attempt to start the over is aborted, he looks as though he's trying a little to hard

7.1

Taylor to Taylor, no run, nips back off the seam, takes the top of the pad into the off side

7.2

Taylor to Taylor, no run, that's a good line, close to off stump but it's a well-judged leave

7.3

Taylor to Taylor, no run, slightly fuller this time, hint of away movement but well left again

7.4

Taylor to Taylor, 1 wide, doh, another loose one after a small build-up of pressure, Bennett King will be getting frustrated on the balcony

7.4

Taylor to Taylor, no run, plays half forward and locates the middle of the bat down to mid

7.5

Taylor to Taylor, 1 run, well run, defensive shots rolls into the on side and both batsmen set off straight away as square-leg couldn't do anything about it

7.6

Taylor to Chibhabha, FOUR, best shot of day, foot to the pitch, free swing through the line and it races between cover and mid off

End of over 8 (6 runs) Zimbabwe 25/2 (RR: 3.12)

Zimbabwe fighting hard

8.1

Powell to Taylor, FOUR, ooh, close! takes the inside edge and shoots past leg stump and away to fine leg...the perfect Chinese/French cut

8.2

Powell to Taylor, no run, that's quick and Taylor tries to glide it up and over the slips but is beaten for pace

8.3

Powell to Taylor, 1 run, slashes hard at this, goes in the air but falls well short of third man

8.4

Powell to Chibhabha, no run, again reaching around 88mph (141kph) and Chibhabha has to jab down on it

8.5

Powell to Chibhabha, no run, this one bounces, but it's played well as Chibhabha makes sure he uses soft hands and it drops short of second slip

8.6

Powell to Chibhabha, 1 run, pushed into the covers, an over without a wide

End of over 9 (6 runs) Zimbabwe 31/2 (RR: 3.44)

BRM Taylor    9* (21b 1x4)      JE Taylor    4-0-15-1

9.1

Taylor to Chibhabha, no run, full, on middle, trapped between bat and pad and rolls back to the bowler...replays show it was pad first but no one appealed

9.2

Taylor to Chibhabha, OUT, that's why no one went up, he was planning on cleaning him up next ball! full and straight, Chibhabha beaten for pace and gets nowhere near it, Zimbabwe in further trouble after a promising stand

CJ Chibhabha b Taylor 12 (39m 25b 2x4 0x6) SR: 48.00

It's the turn of Stuart Matsikenyeri to face the music

9.3

Taylor to Matsikenyeri, 1 run, drifting onto the hips and it's glanced down to fine leg

Matsikenyeri played well against Ireland until he lost the strike in the final overs

9.4

Taylor to Taylor, no run, moves away off the seam, no shot offered

9.5

Taylor to Taylor, no run, solidly blocked back to the bowler

9.6

Taylor to Taylor, no run, sharp bouncer, but ducks underneath without too much trouble. Good over for West Indies

That's the end of my first stint, it's over to Jenny Thompson and her own style of wit and humour... Thank you, Gnashington. Hello everyone. The second Powerplay has been taken immediately.

10.2

10.3

Powell to Taylor, no run, angling into the righthander who does well enough in pressing his bat over that one into the short midwicket

10.4

Powell to Taylor, no run, oh, nearly the fourth wicket there, an inside edge off a straight ball crashing into the pitch and evading the stumps well enough

10.5

Powell to Taylor, no run, down the channel outside off, pinged on a good length and that's left alone

10.6

Powell to Taylor, no run, dibbled to cover and will they run? "No!"

A touch of pace to this pitch and, as Lara predicted, his fast bowlers are enjoying this. Zimbabwe are barely surviving out there

Taylor to Matsikenyeri, no run, short and gently arcing away from the righthander there who lets it fly through to the keeper

11.2

11.3

Taylor to Matsikenyeri, no run, fizzes through and that's left alone outside off stump with some serious shouldering of arms

11.4

Taylor to Matsikenyeri, no run, the ball comes back sharply and there's a big appeal and that's going down leg, with a touch of inside edge, too

11.5

Taylor to Matsikenyeri, no run, on leg and that's worked to short midwicket

11.6

Taylor to Matsikenyeri, 1 run, short, straight and that's played down off the back foot to a very wide third man, more of a fifth man

12.2

Collymore to Matsikenyeri, no run, angling in to the righthander and that's defended into the covers this time

12.4

Collymore to Matsikenyeri, FOUR, well outside off and that's slashed away through cover

12.5

Collymore to Matsikenyeri, no run, worked through leg

12.6

13.4

Taylor to Taylor, 1 run, late cut to point

13.5

Taylor to Matsikenyeri, 1 run, played down off the back foot to square leg

13.6

Taylor to Taylor, no run, on off, a touch of away swing, and that's defended forward

Drinks A note from the management, I'm just the messenger. "It's worth noting at this point that Jenny Thompson has just delivered a five-minute broadside about the conduct of Andrew Flintoff the day before a big match. That would be the same Jenny Thompson who less than 12 hours before a major match was to be found slurring her words while dressed as Big Ben. Class." In mitigation, I had clocked off for the night.

Collymore to Matsikenyeri, no run, a good length and in a good area, and that's defended stoutly into the covers

14.3

Collymore to Matsikenyeri, no run, big slash at that one, looking to lamp it through point, but slices only air, carving right over the ball

14.4

15.2

Smith to Matsikenyeri, 1 run, driven forward

15.3

15.4

Smith to Taylor, 1 wide, oh dear, a loose shot to a loose delivery down off - and that's a wide, in fact

15.4

Smith to Taylor, no run, left alone outside off, quiet leave that one

15.5

Smith to Taylor, no run, played off the toes to the man at short midwicket

15.6

Smith to Taylor, 1 run, dabbed down to gully and that would have been close for Matsikenyeri with a direct hit, but he made his ground easily in the end

Collymore to Taylor, no run, Taylor shuffles hopefully towards the off stick to meet the ball, but it's on a good length and he has to defend that one down in the end

16.4

Collymore to Taylor, no run, regulation stuff - decent enough ball and defended down for another dot

16.5

Collymore to Taylor, 1 run, a touch short of a good length and that's eased with a mere flick of a cover drive into the covers, obviously enough

16.6

Collymore to Matsikenyeri, no run, pushed up there, straying on to middle and leg and the batsman has no difficulty in driving that in front of midwicket for an easy single

The batsmen beginning to settle down here, but it still seems more of a question of survival than total setting. The clouds are creeping ominously over

17.3

Smith to Matsikenyeri, no run, steps down the track, but not out of his crease, and defends that one forward

17.4

Smith to Matsikenyeri, OUT, the first sign of aggression from Matsikenyeri and it doesn't come off - looking to strike that over mid-on but it hardly gets up whatsoever and that's an easy catch for Daren Powell at chest height

18.3

Collymore to Taylor, no run, sturdy defence, with his bat well angled down, and played on the front foot

18.4

Collymore to Taylor, 1 run, worked down to wide third man

Three slips still in place, and why not, West Indies are in control

18.5

19.3

Smith to Williams, no run, driven straight to the man at mid-off

19.4

Smith to Williams, 1 run, steered away behind point and that's Williams off the mark. He's shown more restraint so far than he did in Zimbabwe's opener against Ireland

19.5

Smith to Taylor, no run, played into the covers

19.6

It's a busy day for us Andrews at Cricinfo. I'm slaving over a hot keyboard; Mr Andrew Miller has just had a Wisden tooth yanked out in St Kitts and he's bathing in rum to numb the pain, while Mr Andrew Hall, marketing guru extraordinaire, is keen to plug the desktop alerts, which do what they say on the tin, funnily enough: "They're wicket alerts and news headlines direct to your desktop."

Hello again. Well, Zimbabwe were giving themselves a decent platform for a late charge before that run out of Taylor. Now it's up to Sean Williams to carry the innings through and see if he can lift the total to around 200. It's Elton Chigumbura to have a go...and Jerome Taylor's back with the ball

Taylor to Chigumbura, 1 wide, another wide from Taylor, his sixth off a mixed day

41.2

45.3

Taylor to Chigumbura, no run, quicker, shorter...Chigumbura tries to pull but gets nowhere near the ball and falls over as he swings himself off his feet...Taylor saying "drive that"

45.4

Taylor to Chigumbura, FOUR, well hit...picked the slower ball and went over cover. He may not locate the middle very often but when he does it goes a long way...and he has a license in the final few overs

1.50pm We're ready to go, rather West Indies and Zimbabwe will be, they're the ones doing the hard work out there. Chris Mpofu to open up.

End of innings That completes a fine fightback from Zimbabwe after losing those two early wickets...it shouldn't test this West Indian batting line-up but some strange things have already happened at this World Cup. "It's a very nice batting wicket," says Williams during his out-of-puff interview with Jeff Dujon, which suggests the Zimbabwe attack will have their work cut out.

Join us in about 40 minutes time for the second innings when Jenny Thompson will be your first commentator
