ICC World Cup - 14th match, Group C

Kenya v New Zealand

New Zealand won by 148 runs

9.30am The batsmen have emerged and we are about to get underway. Thomas Odoyo to open up the attack ...

9.28am An immaculately observed minute's silence by the two teams and various dignitaries. The Kenyans stay out in the middle - their extra men amble off - while New Zealand head for the dressing-room.

Michael Atherton again notes that there is almost nobody in the ground, and he has a point. This match is not a big draw and the locals have clearly decided to give it a miss, which is a shame.

9.25am The two teams have filed out to observe a minute's silence following the death of Bob Woolmer at the weekend.

9.10am Steve Tikolo won the toss and stuck New Zealand in to bat. Both sides make one charge, Jeetan Patel making way for Michael Mason in the New Zealand XI, while Kenya bring in Lameck Onyango for Nehemiah Odhiambo. Despite names, the two Kenyans are brothers.

"We will try to exploit whatever help there is in this wicket and restrict them to as low a total as possible," said Tikolo. "It's a crucial match, no easy games as such, we are desperate to win this one," added Stephen Fleming. "We want to keep doing the little things and build up to something. We're very keen to play well and be positive, but we need to do the little things well. We've been quietly going about our work and looking forward to the games."

"Quite quiet out here, " grinned Michael Atherton to Tikolo. "You'll have to make your own atmosphere." Quiet is an understatement. There are so few people inside the ground that they wouldn't make up a quorum at the AGM of the local allotment society.

Kenya Maurice Ouma (wk), David Obuya, Ravi Shah, Steve Tikolo (capt), Tanmay Mishra, Collins Obuya, Jimmy Kamande, Lameck Onyango, Peter Ongondo, Hiren Varaiya

9.00am Good morning and welcome to St Lucia for the winner-goes-through Group C match between New Zealand and Kenya. Both won their opening matches and so know victory will mean a Super Six berth. New Zealand, who trounced England, will be keen to win this as it will mean that they carry two points into the second round, regardless of what happens n their final outing against Canada. Kenya, the leading Associate, looked good when defeating Canada, although this will be a much tougher ask.

Tikolo tinkers with the field

9.1

10.5

Odoyo to Taylor, no run, poked into the covers this time

10.6

Odoyo to Taylor, no run, creeps over that one and tickles it to the man in at short midwicket

A better over from Odoyo, just the single. Lameck Onyongo is warming up, ready for a bowl, shining the ball on his left thigh to be exact. Ah, didn't get his run-up right first time. The keeper's standing up to him, which surprises occasional Kenya keeper Abeed Janmohamed, who's standing behind me right now, as he has a nasty bouncer which has hit poor Abs before

Ongondo to Fleming, no run, creeps over the ball to defend that one into the covers

Fleming's not looking comfortable out there

12.3

Ongondo to Fleming, SIX, ...although that was a jolly nice shot from a loose delivery - a lovely pull with consummate timing, Fleming coming towards the ball and sending that high into the stands and that brings up New Zealand's fifty

Play's held up because the ball's been lost. That went so far I'd imagine they're into the next neighbourhood to ask can they have their ball back. They've found it! Let the show go on

Onyango to Taylor, no run, comes forward and walks into that one and that's played to mid-on

13.6

Onyango to Taylor, FOUR, short and way outside off and that's clunked off the back foot through wide third man

"Why are you always so tired, anyway?" asks Tom Adams. "Sweets, coffee - are you lapping it up at Wisden buyer's expense? We need to be told." The tiredness comes from covering a tournament that runs longer than a plot line in Eastenders ... and we are so broke we have to make our own sweets in our spare time.

14.5

Ongondo to Taylor, no run, slightly slower ball, good length on the toes and that's defended forward

14.6

Ongondo to Taylor, 1 run, up there, dabbed down off the back foot, short, and there's some shuffling through from the batsmen - a hesitation from Taylor in his running but would have been safe even if there had been a direct hit at the non-striker's end

The final Powerplay has been whirled into action

17.4

Onyango to Fleming, no run, straight, and moving away a touch from the lefthander who plays it down on the front foot

17.5

Onyango to Fleming, FOUR, straight again and driven sumptuously down the ground to bring up Fleming's fifty, he's looking well in his groove now and that's ominous for Kenya

17.6

Onyango to Fleming, FOUR, slower ball, picked up easily, and Fleming caresses that one off the front foot through cover

That's Fleming's 47th ODI fifty, good going. Scotland are 63 for 3, meanwhile, inside the first 20 overs

The wind continues to blow the bails off with tedious regularity. Rudi resorts to taking Styris's bat and thumps the stumps harder into the ground.

22.1

Kamande to Styris, 1 run, Styris back, waits, and drives to long-on

A few readers ask why don't they use heavier bails? Perhaps the ICC don't have them sponsored yet?

Long-off and long-on still inviting the single. And off come the bails, Koertzen ambles in to replace them for the 103rd time and looks very unhappy with life. The officials consult and agree that Malcolm Speed needs to do something about the wind.

JDP Oram    1* (3b)      LN Onyango    7-0-51-1
CD McMillan    40* (31b 1x4 3x6)      TM Odoyo    7-0-35-1

44.1

Odoyo to McMillan, 1 run, driven out through extra cover, I think he was trying to drive that straighter, but nevermind, they're all runs and they all count

'Middle, please', Oram takes his guard

44.2

Odoyo to Oram, 2 runs, effortlessly eased with a late dink off the back foot to third man, lovely quick hands and that's an attractive shot

44.3

Odoyo to Oram, no run, dinked down to gully and there's a big, barked "No!" lest there be any confusion about going for a single

44.4

Odoyo to Oram, OUT, short and straight ball, slower too, and there's a swing and a miss to bring up Odoyo's 100th one-day wicket. That was well bowled, hitting the top of the sticks, and a timely wicket for Kenya who will now hope that will contribute towards some damage limitation at the death

JDP Oram b Odoyo 3 (5m 6b 0x4 0x6) SR: 50.00

Brendon McCullum is the new batsman, using his bat as a crutch to do some warm-ups

44.5

Odoyo to McCullum, no run, defends into the leg side first up, thinking about driving that, but pulling out of the shot

44.6

Odoyo to McCullum, no run, defended forward

Another good over from Kenya, exerting some late pressure, but the Kiwis are still on course to top 300

End of over 45 (3 runs) New Zealand 280/5 (RR: 6.22)
BB McCullum    0* (2b)      TM Odoyo    8-0-38-2
CD McMillan    41* (32b 1x4 3x6)      LN Onyango    7-0-51-1

45.1

Onyango to McMillan, 1 run, driven out to long-off

45.2

Onyango to McCullum, 1 run, another off-side drive, this one creamed out to extra cover

45.3

Onyango to McMillan, FOUR, a low full toss on leg and that's helped on its way for four in front of midwicket - well placed, not trying to play that one too hard

45.4

Onyango to McMillan, no run, driven to midwicket

45.5

Onyango to McMillan, no run, yorker, and that's well dug out

45.6

Onyango to McMillan, SIX, well timed over midwicket, what looks like a mere flick travels far and high, lovely

End of over 46 (12 runs) New Zealand 292/5 (RR: 6.34)
CD McMillan    52* (37b 2x4 4x6)      LN Onyango    8-0-63-1
BB McCullum    1* (3b)      TM Odoyo    8-0-38-2

Breaking news How's your luck? Michael Vaughan is apparently crocked - undone by a pothole. It's unconfirmed as yet whether he had been drinking (yes, that's a joke) but it's certainly another blow for England, ahead of Saturday's match with Kenya, particularly with Vaughan looking in good touch right now. Pot luck, Vaughan holes out etc ... We'll have more news for you when we've got it.

46.1

Odoyo to McCullum, 1 run, defended this time

46.2

Odoyo to McMillan, 2 runs, driven straight

46.3

Odoyo to McMillan, 1 run, left alone outside off

46.4

Odoyo to McCullum, no run, ah, the heavy bails prevent a wicket - as that would have gone on to take the lighter bails off, the ball crunching into the stumps as the batsman plays it into the ground and it bounces back onto the sticks. Fortunately the bowler sees the lighter side of things, and has a good chuckle

46.5

Odoyo to McCullum, 1 run, whipped off the legs into deep midwicket

46.6

Odoyo to McMillan, 1 run, worked out to the covers

Ongondo back into the attack

End of over 47 (6 runs) New Zealand 298/5 (RR: 6.34)
CD McMillan    56* (40b 2x4 4x6)      TM Odoyo    9-0-44-2
BB McCullum    3* (6b)      LN Onyango    8-0-63-1

47.1

Ongondo to McMillan, 1 run, drags that short and wide but the batsman can only manage a single, playing that off the back foot down to the man behind point on the boundary

47.2

Ongondo to McCullum, 2 runs, on middle and leg, just short of a good length and that's whisked away in front of square to bring up the inevitable 300

47.3

Ongondo to McCullum, 1 run, on leg, and that's in the air, just short of the man at deep backward square. McCullum investigates the bottom of his bat, just checking it's still intact

47.4

Ongondo to McMillan, FOUR, up there, driven back into the ground, but that goes straight and on its way to the boundary, such was the timing. McCullum did well to duck under the ball on its way through

47.5

Ongondo to McMillan, 1 run, whacked out to deep extra cover

47.6

Ongondo to McCullum, OUT, on leg and that's whipped high inside the boundary - "Catch it!" - and indeed Varaiya holds on, dropping forward to take that on his knees. Great take

BB McCullum c Varaiya b Ongondo 6 (13m 9b 0x4 0x6) SR: 66.66

Vettori comes in and he's on strike - they crossed

End of over 48 (9 runs) New Zealand 307/6 (RR: 6.39)
     PJ Ongondo    9-0-52-1
CD McMillan    62* (43b 3x4 4x6)      TM Odoyo    9-0-44-2

48.1

Odoyo to Vettori, 2 runs, immediately off the mark with a quick two

48.2

Odoyo to Vettori, 2 runs, reverse swept off the legs and Vettori has to dive at full stretch - and full bat - to get back into his crease

48.3

Odoyo to Vettori, 1 leg bye, on leg and Vettori gets something, anything, on it, as the ball falls in front and they scramble a quick single

More on Vaughan

48.4

Odoyo to McMillan, SIX, huge strike over mid-on and that's travelling

48.5

Odoyo to McMillan, no run, hit back to the bowler

48.6

Odoyo to McMillan, 1 run, driven to mid-on

Final over, much to Kenya's relief, no doubt, after chasing leather for so long

End of over 49 (12 runs) New Zealand 319/6 (RR: 6.51)
CD McMillan    69* (46b 3x4 5x6)      TM Odoyo    10-0-55-2
DL Vettori    4* (3b)      PJ Ongondo    9-0-52-1

49.1

Ongondo to McMillan, 2 runs, slower ball, short, aerial, and that just beats Collins Obuya at backward point, with an outstretched hand

49.2

Ongondo to McMillan, OUT, another slower ball, short again, straight, and the batsman miscues. That's well taken by Tikolo at midwicket, running forward and takes a comfortable catch

CD McMillan c Tikolo b Ongondo 71 (64m 48b 3x4 5x6) SR: 147.91

Franklin to the crease as a few drops of rain start to fall

49.3

Ongondo to Vettori, 2 runs, wide and that's worked off the back foot behind point

49.4

Ongondo to Vettori, no run, outside off and Vettori tries to leather that but doesn't connect

49.5

Ongondo to Vettori, FOUR, outside off and that's worked away through extra cover for Vettori's first boundary

49.6

Ongondo to Vettori, FOUR, short and that's helped on it way off the legs behind square

12.45pm Welcome back ... The players are heading out to the middle. Michael Mason has the new ball ...

Innings break So that's a pretty daunting ask for Kenya to say the least - and New Zealand will be more than happy with their efforts. Squashing Kenya out of this match now shouldn't be too much of a problem for the Kiwis, thanks to half-ceuntries from four of their top five, Lou Vincent missing out with a duck. Kenya's bowlers did well late on, but it was too little.

"Nice to get some runs on the board," notes Styris, for himself and for the Kiwis, with their record score in World Cups.

Scotland reached 186 from 8 from their 50 overs, hardly an earth-shattering score but South Africa may be frustrated with not having bowled them out, having had them a84 for 5.

Injury news - Ross Taylor has strained his hamstring, while off the pitch Michael Vaughan and Jimmy Anderson are now both doubts for England's match against Kenya.

End of over 50 (12 runs) New Zealand 331/7
DL Vettori    14* (7b 2x4)      PJ Ongondo    10-0-64-2
JEC Franklin    0* (0b)      TM Odoyo    10-0-55-2
