ICC World Cup - 16th match, Group B

Bangladesh v Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka won by 198 runs (D/L method)

Hello and welcome to Cricinfo's live coverage of the 16th match of this World Cup, between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka at Port of Spain.

I'm Jamie Alter, your commentator, and will be here to take you through till the end.

Sri Lanka have said that they're wary of Bangladesh, who as you all will know very well, beat India by five wickets in their Group B opener last week. A win for either side will put them through to the Super Eights. Sri Lanka bat deep, so Bangladesh would look to bowl them out for around 220 to give themselves a good chance.

Pitch report: The surface has held three matches so far, and there's a lot more moisture today. The grass is abrasive, with something there for the new-ball bowlers. The captain who wins the toss will look to bowl first.

Toss: Yep, Bangladesh have won the toss and will bowl first. They have fielded and unchanged side from the win over India. Sri Lanka too have gone for form and not made any changes.

Players' call: "The win against India has put us in a good position to enter the next round," said Habibul Bashar, who will be be hoping the way his team came through the pressure-cooker atmosphere of the game against India will help Bangladesh today.

Marvan Atapattu, who isn't playing today, said Bangladesh can't be written off. "You've got to give them credit for a fine victory over India. They're a fine side now and have worked hard for it. We've not played against many of these Bangladeshi youngsters, but saw them against India. It seems they don't feel any pressure."

Right then, we're all set for play. The umpires, Steve Davis and Daryl Harper, are out in the middle. Bashar has led his side out and they've taken their places in the field. Mashrafe Mortaza has the new ball, and he's in some form. The highest ODI wicket-taker in 2006, mind you.

Sri Lanka's openers, Upul Tharanga and Sanath Jayasuriya, are taking their places.

Mortaza to Tharanga. Two slips, three on the off side, two on the leg side. Buckle up, lets play ball!

Mashrafe Mortaza to Tharanga, no run, lovely length ball first up, lands on a sweet spot and shaves past Tharanga's backfoot defense

0.4

End of over 1 (4 runs) Sri Lanka 4/0
WU Tharanga    1* (6b)      Mashrafe Mortaza    1-0-4-0

Syed Rasel partners Mortaza with the ball. Two slips still there.

1.1

Syed Rasel to Jayasuriya, no run, back of a length outside off stump, some swing for him first up, batsman pushes that into the covers

1.2

Syed Rasel to Jayasuriya, no run, good length ball on middle and leg, Jayasuriya defends to midwicket and thinks about the single, but resists as the fielder swoops in

1.3

Syed Rasel to Jayasuriya, no run, good ball, beaten! Rasel lands it on a good length and gets it to swing away as Jayasuriya lunges forward in defence, and the ball beats the bat

1.4

Syed Rasel to Jayasuriya, FOUR, short of a length outside off stump, and at that minimal pace its easy for Jayasuriya to roll the wrists over it and pull through square leg for the first four of the match, and the fielder giving chase slips on the ropes as he tries to stop it

1.5

Syed Rasel to Jayasuriya, no run, fraction width on offer, but not enough to cut, Jayasuriya goes through with it and the ball almost rolls onto off stump, and he has to use the bat to push the ball away

1.6

End of over 2 (4 runs) Sri Lanka 8/0

Good support for Bangladesh at the ground

2.6

Mashrafe Mortaza to Jayasuriya, 2 leg byes, pitches outside leg stump and Jayasuriya tries to turn it fine, but doesnt get bat on it so he settles for leg-byes as square leg gives chase and hauls it in near the fine leg ropes

ST Jayasuriya    4* (9b 1x4)      Mashrafe Mortaza    2-0-5-0
WU Tharanga    2* (10b)      Syed Rasel    1-0-4-0

3.1

Syed Rasel to Tharanga, 1 run, back of a length outside off stump, no room to cut at all, Tharanga stands up on the toes and goes for a cheeky dab to point, and the ball so nearly rolls onto off stump via the inside edge, and Jayasuriya calls for a very risky single and makes it in the end

3.2

Syed Rasel to Jayasuriya, 2 runs, good length and moving in from outside off stump, Jayasuriya tentatively comes forward and pokes at it, the ball scoots past backward point and the batsmen run very well for a couple

fine leg comes in, square leg goes back

3.5

Syed Rasel to Jayasuriya, no run, good comeback, a length ball outside off stump, he comes forward and defends

3.6

Syed Rasel to Jayasuriya, no run, madness! A good length ball moves in some from off stump, Jayasuriya defends to leg, Tharanga sets off at some pace and is sent back about half-way down the track and looks a goner, but Rasel, who picks the ball up and has all the time in the world to hit the nonstriker's stumps, fires in a throw that misses the stumps, wow that would have been out if he'd hit...where's the back-up fielder?

End of over 4 (9 runs) Sri Lanka 20/0

Some clarification here. A win doesnt guarantee either side a spot in the next round. A win for Sri Lanka will mean two wins for them. If India wins against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh wins against Bermuda, that will give all three countries two wins and it will come down to the run rate. Sri Lanka can still be eliminated based on that. Thanks for that, Dilip Nair.

11:44 local, 15:44 GMT: Okay, good news - that yellow strip is off and the stumps are being inserted. We should have play in a few. The dark clouds still lingering overhead, though.

11:39 local, 15:39 GMT: Another six minutes on, and one yellow tarp is being put over the 22 yards, as a very light sprinkle plays spoilsport.

11:33 local, 15:33 GMT: Six minutes on, the rain has lessened and the groundstaff have run out to the middle to remove the covers. Thats an about-turn, and very good to see.

As we wait for play to resume, on Jon's request, here's a loud virtual shout out to the TMSB Taverners Cricket Club, online and following all the action. Howdy!

11:27 local, 15:27 GMT: This a fairly hard shower, folks. The blue tarps are out on the square, the players and umpires are inside the hut, but the spirit of the fans doesnt look to have dampened. They're still a vocal lot, either side.

Yes, the covers are being ushered on by the umpires as the rain gets heavier and lashes across Queens Park Oval. We have to play the waiting game now.

So, Sri Lanka settle on 318 for 4, thanks to a sterling hundred from veteran Sanath Jayasuriya - with the most ODI sixes, 231 - who had to go off with a busted knee (how much he could've added had he not been injured, you all can guess), a fluent 55 from Kumar Sangakkara, and a pugnacious, unbeaten 52 from Chamara Silva. For Sangakarra and Silva, it was back-to-back fifties, and remember, this is Silva's first World Cup. Mahela Jayawardene too chipped in with a blow-hot-blow-cold 46.

No Bangladesh bowler could replicate their great effort against India, and now they have plenty of runs to chase down. The fielding wasnt top-drawer, with easy catches and simple run-outs going a beg.
