ICC World Cup - 18th match, Group C

Canada v New Zealand

New Zealand won by 114 runs

9.25am The players a lining up for a minutes silence in memory of Bob Woolmer

We are nearly ready for the action, here come Stephen Fleming and Lou Vincent as the sun appears. Vincent has started with two ducks so this is an ideal chance for him to find some form...it'll be Anderson Cummins with the new ball and Vincent will take the first strike...two slips

9.20am Canada have won the toss and stuck New Zealand into bat on an overcast day in St Lucia

Team news Peter Fulton replaces Ross Taylor who tweaked his hamstring against Kenya while Shane Bond and James Franklin are rested so Daryl Tuffey and Jeetan Patel come into the side. However, Fleming said that Taylor was progressing nicely in his recovery and should be fit for the Super Eights.

New Zealand 1 Lou Vincent, 2 Stephen Fleming (capt), 3 Peter Fulton, 4 Scott Styris, 5 Craig McMillan, 6 Jacob Oram, 7 Brendon McCullum (wk), 8 Daniel Vettori, 9 Jeetan Patel, 10 Daryl Tuffey, 11 Michael Mason

Canada 1 Geoff Barnett, 2 John Davison (capt), 3 Ashish Bagai (wk), 4 Ian Billcliff, 5 Abdool Samad, 6 Ashif Mulla, 7 Sunil Dhaniram, 8 Umar Bhatti, 9 Anderson Cummins, 10 Henry Osinde, 11 Kevin Sandher

For Canada, Kevin Sandhar, a left-arm spinner, and Henry Osinde come into the team

Hello and welcome to Cricinfo's coverage of this Group C clash between Canada and New Zealand from St Lucia. I'm Andrew McGlashan and along with Jenny Thompson will be bringing you all the action.

In terms of the bigger picture there is nothing riding on this match. New Zealand are safely into the Super Eights - and will take two points forward regardless of whether England or Kenya join them - while Canada were eliminated after their defeat to England. However, both sides have plenty of reasons to take this match seriously. The Kiwis will want keep the winning momentum going with a comprehensive victory, while Canada have pride to play for after showing some fighting spirit against England where they managed to bat out 50 overs and make over 200.

Stay with us for the toss and team news, the action starts at 9.30am (13.30GMT)

0.3

Cummins to Vincent, no run, perfect outswinger, and Vincent is beaten as he produces another iffy defensive shot...he's batting from memory here

2.1

Cummins to Vincent, SIX, at last! Vincent opens his World account and in some style as plants his front foot down the pitch, swings hard and sends the ball high over cover. It carries all the way...that'll be a weight off his shoulders

Cummins to Vincent, no run, this time he isn't as convincing as he tries to cut but doesn't make contact

3.6

Bhatti to Fleming, no run, angled down to backward point

SP Fleming    1* (9b)      U Bhatti    2-1-2-0

4.2

Cummins to Vincent, no run, another leave from Vincent, it seems to be all or nothing from him at the moment

Cummins to Fleming, no run, short, goes for the pull but misses out, it strikes him on the body and falls down onto the pitch

6.3

Cummins to Fleming, no run, onto the front foot to this one which was on off stump, takes a thick inside half of the bat into the leg side

6.4

Cummins to Fleming, no run, angled across Fleming who lets it go

End of over 7 (4 runs) New Zealand 23/0 (RR: 3.28)
L Vincent    10* (23b 1x6)      AC Cummins    4-1-14-0
SP Fleming    8* (20b 1x4)      U Bhatti    3-1-7-0

7.1

Bhatti to Fleming, FOUR, overpitched from Bhatti and Fleming strokes through the line off the front foot and it threads the gap between cover and mid off...fielder is kept interested but loses the race

7.2

Bhatti to Fleming, no run, touch of extra bounce from this once, Fleming lets it go

7.3

Bhatti to Fleming, 1 wide, too wide this time as Bhatti tries hard not to stray onto the legs

7.3

Bhatti to Fleming, FOUR, Fleming shuffles across his stumps and works this straight down the ground past mid on, superb bit of batting as he picked the gaps in the fielder after Davison has strengthened the off side

7.4

Bhatti to Fleming, no run, tighter to the off stump and Fleming leaves

9.6

Bhatti to Fleming, 1 bye, Fleming uses his feet....then leaves and there's a fumble from Bagai behind the stumps

That's it from me for now, here's Jen Thompson. Thanks Gnash McGlashan. Second Powerplay taken, then John Davidson makes an eating an apple gesture, that's also a call for the grille.

End of over 10 (7 runs) New Zealand 41/0 (RR: 4.10)
SP Fleming    17* (31b 3x4)      U Bhatti    5-1-23-0
L Vincent    15* (30b 1x6)      AC Cummins    5-1-15-0

10.1

Cummins to Fleming, 1 leg bye, bit shout for LBW but that one didn't come back well enough and they scamper the leg bye

10.2

Cummins to Vincent, FOUR, Vincent is cheeky as you like, which is very cheeky as it happens, moving from right outside off to sweep that back through the 45. Naughty boy

10.3

Cummins to Vincent, 1 wide, outside off and that swings away... and away some more

10.3

Cummins to Vincent, FOUR, on off, short and the batsman comes down the track, pinging that off his legs to midwicket, the fifty up for New Zealand now

10.4

Cummins to Vincent, 1 wide, swings away down off again and that's just to say wide

10.4

Cummins to Vincent, no run, more banana action, but still wide enough for the batsman to leave easily enough outside off

Scotland are 15 for 4 against Netherlands. Sounds like another close match in the offing

10.5

Cummins to Vincent, 1 run, poked into the cover region and there's a quick, but easy, single

10.6

Cummins to Fleming, 1 run, staying over the wicket for the righthander and this over closes, at last, with a skew away off the back foot behind point. Easy pickings for the Kiwis out there

"We appreciate that you have an international audience, but can you squeeze the word 'colonial' somewhere into your commentary today?" " asks Giles Northcott-Cooper from his Oxfordshire pile, mistaking us for some commercial radio station, Shoutoutinfo FM perhaps. Alas, despite you being our other reader right now, 'fraid not, squire.

End of over 11 (13 runs) New Zealand 54/0 (RR: 4.90)
SP Fleming    18* (33b 3x4)      AC Cummins    6-1-27-0
L Vincent    24* (34b 2x4 1x6)      U Bhatti    5-1-23-0

11.1

Bhatti to Fleming, 1 run, left-armer to lefthander there, and that's on off and a touch short and it's squeezed to point

11.2

Bhatti to Vincent, 1 run, pitched straight and there's a hint of drift into the righthander, allowing him to get over the ball and work that one to midwicket

11.3

Bhatti to Fleming, no run, came from wide of the wicket there to angle that in at the lefthander who defends over it, standing tall

Bhatti's lower back is giving him some trouble, so uncle Anderson comes over with a friendly rub. It's not helpful enough, however, and Davison is forced to bring on another bowler. That could be the end of Bhatti's World Cup. Abdool Samad is coming into action instead

11.4

Samad to Fleming, 5 wides, not a great start, wide down leg, Fleming leaves it and it's so wide it evades the keeper

11.4

Samad to Fleming, 1 run, leans out and into the cover drive off a wideish one

Some muffled music which Gnasher reckons is Spandau Ballet comes across the speakers. Spandau Ballet? Can't be true.

11.5

Samad to Vincent, no run, outside off and that comes right back off the seam in at the righthander, tucking him up, and he defends tidily enough

11.6

Samad to Vincent, no run, defended into the covers

Henry Osinde comes into the attack

End of over 12 (8 runs) New Zealand 62/0 (RR: 5.16)
L Vincent    25* (37b 2x4 1x6)      AM Samad    0.3-0-6-0
SP Fleming    20* (36b 3x4)      AC Cummins    6-1-27-0

12.1

Osinde to Fleming, 1 wide, oh dear, let's call that one a loosener shall we, very loose down leg

12.1

Osinde to Fleming, 1 run, slightly corrected line, that one on leg at least this time and it's tucked off the hips to square

12.2

Osinde to Vincent, no run, left alone outside off, the ball arcing away a tad and the batsman rising on to his back foot

12.3

Osinde to Vincent, 2 runs, on leg and that's flicked up in the air, didn't get hold of that one, but it falls into space - a deliberate steer

12.4

Osinde to Vincent, FOUR, oh, testing and tempting the fielder at wide mid-on there, but that was just too wide for him, and it runs on to the boundary

12.5

Osinde to Vincent, FOUR, off the back foot and Vincent throws his hands at the ball, a show of aggression, there and that races away through cover this time

12.6

Osinde to Vincent, no run, good comeback, on off, and that's defended forward

Dave from the US writes: "Hope you have a good supply of biscuits to get you through the match." Well, Dave, just to put your mind at ease one of our very nice commercial department people has just bought us three tubs of snacks from the local supermarket. Abeed will do anything to get his name in cyber-print

End of over 13 (12 runs) New Zealand 74/0 (RR: 5.69)
L Vincent    35* (42b 4x4 1x6)      H Osinde    1-0-12-0
SP Fleming    21* (37b 3x4)      AM Samad    0.3-0-6-0

13.1

Samad to Fleming, FOUR, short and with width and that's gift-wrapped... it's unwrapped and sent flying behind point

13.2

Samad to Fleming, FOUR, opens the stance, walks into that one, jinking it off the toes

A mismatch going on out there right now

13.3

Samad to Fleming, no run, defended forward

13.4

Samad to Fleming, no run, that one goes across the lefthander and that's left alone as it moves away from him, the keeper takes the bails off just for fun

13.5

Samad to Fleming, 1 run, dabbed down to gully, a hint of hesitation from the batsmen, and that's rocketed back in with a quick arm - but the runner is in safe

13.6

Samad to Vincent, no run, pops up a touch outside off and that's left alone

End of over 14 (9 runs) New Zealand 83/0 (RR: 5.92)
L Vincent    35* (43b 4x4 1x6)      AM Samad    1.3-0-15-0
SP Fleming    30* (42b 5x4)      H Osinde    1-0-12-0

14.1

Osinde to Fleming, no run, bustles in with intent and flings that one down as hard as possible, but it hardly races through, slinking on to the keeper outside the off stick

14.2

Osinde to Fleming, 2 runs, banged in again, but short, and that's well struck off the back foot through cover

14.3

Osinde to Fleming, FOUR, help yourself, Fleming down on one knee and a wide half-volley gets the inevitable treatment

14.4

Osinde to Fleming, no run, outside off and that's nibbled into the covers off the back foot

14.5

Osinde to Fleming, FOUR, placement is impeccable once more, this time a drive through extra cover

The only challenge for Fleming seems to be picking his exact spot through the field - and he doesn't even look tested in that department

14.6

Osinde to Fleming, SIX, short, high and Fleming's hooked that one into the boundary boards. The trap was sprung, in theory, the man was out there at deep midwicket, but he would need go-go-Gadget arms to pluck that one on the boundary

Drinks out there right now.

This comes from Adam. "My teacher says if you show this message he'll let me of my maths homework. He's a Kiwi in England and thinks Vincent will score a 100!" We don't condone such skiving, sadly, and as for Vincent's century, well, he's looking good for it, but then again so would Geoff Boycott's grandmother be on the strength of the bowling out there.

Davison opts to take the last Powerplay to get it out of the way. Canada still seeking a breakthrough, but there's not much on offer in the way of chances out there.

End of over 15 (16 runs) New Zealand 99/0 (RR: 6.60)
SP Fleming    46* (48b 7x4 1x6)      H Osinde    2-0-28-0

15.4

Sandher to Vincent, 1 run, reverse swept to short fine leg

15.5

Sandher to Fleming, no run, left alone outside off and the batsman shoulders arms

15.6

Sandher to Fleming, 1 run, scampered through and that's a better throw this time from Davison down in the gully - but the batsmen manage to get home easily enough

Davison brings himself on to bowl now, and he can find a little tweak, let's see if he can find a wicket

End of over 16 (6 runs) New Zealand 105/0 (RR: 6.56)
SP Fleming    47* (50b 7x4 1x6)      KT Sandher    1-0-6-0
L Vincent    40* (47b 5x4 1x6)      H Osinde    2-0-28-0

16.1

Davison to Fleming, 1 run, and he nearly does find a wicket first up, that one cutting back in from outside off and the batsman's nearly trapped trying to work that one into the leg side

16.2

Davison to Vincent, no run, on off and that pops up off the pads into the leg side

16.3

Davison to Vincent, 3 wides, on leg and that's turned away to fine leg where it rolls slowly

17.4

Sandher to Fleming, 1 run, tickled off the front foot square again and the strike's rotated once more

Unsurprisingly, this is just a bit of batting practice now for the batsmen; still, it's a tidy enough work out

17.5

Sandher to Vincent, no run, defended this time

17.6

Sandher to Vincent, 2 runs, comes forward and sweeps that behind square

End of over 18 (9 runs) New Zealand 122/0 (RR: 6.77)

18.4

Davison to Vincent, 1 run, pitches on off and would have gone on to miss leg, but the batsman swept that into square

18.5

Davison to Fleming, no run, left alone outside off

18.6

Davison to Fleming, 3 runs, driven through cover and that's just-to-say stopped inside the boundary

End of over 19 (12 runs) New Zealand 134/0 (RR: 7.05)

Sandher to McCullum, SIX, swung high and handsome by McCullum, goes down on one knee and slog sweeps onto the roof of the stand which Fulton picked out earlier in the day

ah, that's nice, James Franklin picking his ear with a pen on the boundary...they are still looking for the ball which McCullum planted into the stands, they have it now

45.5

Sandher to McCullum, 2 runs, pushed out to deep square-leg, the shot was well paced and they make it back for a brace...300 up for the second innings in a row

45.6

Sandher to McCullum, SIX, that's helped over the rope by Cummins at long on for another six. McCullum swung hard at it, but sent it with more height than distance but Cummins could only palm it over the fence...shame, Sandher bowled a decent spell

End of over 46 (18 runs) New Zealand 307/5 (RR: 6.67)
BB McCullum    16* (6b 2x6)      KT Sandher    10-0-58-2

Cummins has a chance to redeem himself with the ball, he's back at the bowling crease with two overs left

46.1

Cummins to Oram, 1 run, crunched down the track but it strikes McCullum's bat and rebounds down to long off for just a single

46.2

Cummins to McCullum, 1 run, flicked out to deep backward square, McCullum feels he could have got that finer for four

46.3

Cummins to Oram, 1 run, good yorker, dug out down to long on

46.4

Cummins to McCullum, FOUR, unlucky for Cummins, full delivery on leg stump and a thin inside edge races down to fine leg for a boundary...that's the hazard of bowling at the death

46.5

Cummins to McCullum, 1 run, another excellent yorker, this time just squeezed out to square leg

46.6

Cummins to Oram, 1 run, low full toss carved through the covers and out to the sweeper

47.1

Dhaniram to Oram, 1 run, full ball, swung down to long

tough ask for a spinner to bowl now

47.2

Dhaniram to McCullum, SIX, full toss and that was asking to be hit, which it was, a long way over square for another six

47.3

Dhaniram to McCullum, 1 leg bye, tries it again, but that ball pitches and McCullum misses, taken on the body

47.4

Dhaniram to Oram, 1 run, uses his feet, makes it into a yorker and worked to long on, well bowled

47.5

Dhaniram to McCullum, 2 runs, goes for another swing over the leg side, takes a leading edge and loops to where mid off would have been...but he's down on the fence

looks like it has cracked McCullum's bat...some more exposure for his sponsor

47.6

Dhaniram to McCullum, 1 run, flicks this down the ground, in the air but drops just short of long on...50 partnership off just 30 balls, good hitting

End of over 48 (12 runs) New Zealand 328/5 (RR: 6.83)
BB McCullum    31* (13b 1x4 3x6)      S Dhaniram    7-0-50-0

48.3

Cummins to McCullum, 1 run, laced with one hand down to long on

48.4

Cummins to Oram, 1 run, gets underneath this one and lofts into the off side, again the ball falls short of the fielder - this time deep cover running in

48.5

Cummins to McCullum, 1 run, turned through midwicket, Cummins doing a fair job at the death

48.6

End of over 49 (13 runs) New Zealand 341/5 (RR: 6.95)
JDP Oram    28* (25b 2x6)      AC Cummins    10-1-59-0
BB McCullum    37* (17b 1x4 3x6)      S Dhaniram    7-0-50-0

49.1

Dhaniram to McCullum, SIX, the crowd at deep midwicket gets more catching practice as McCullum launches his favourite slog-sweep over the boundary...again

49.2

Dhaniram to McCullum, 2 runs, uses his feet this time, Oram comes back for a second and the TV umpire is called in...the reactions suggest he's save and the pictures confirm it...although only by a couple of inches, but that's enough

49.3

Dhaniram to McCullum, SIX, it's the leg side again! that's the fastest ever World Cup fifty, just 20 balls of brilliant striking from McCullum who has added a fine flourish to the innings

49.4

Dhaniram to McCullum, 1 run, swung with one hand out to deep square leg

it's also the fastest ODI half-century by a Kiwi

49.5

Dhaniram to Oram, SIX, now it's Oram's turn...this one almost goes out of the ground and would probably after cleared the boundary at the MCG as he goes inside out over extra cover...it was wind-assisted but still some blow

49.6

Dhaniram to Oram, 1 run, the final ball is dug out towards midwicket to complete an explosive, and ultra-professional innings by New Zealand

Canada are coming out to bat now - John Davison is to face the first delivery, and he is joined by Geoff Barnett, as New Zealand run to their fielding positions. Daryll Tuffey gets ready to open the bowling

Innings break That's New Zealand's highest World Cup total, beating their 331 against Kenya two days ago, and their second highest in any ODI. Davison smiling at the inevitability of it all and has the good grace to applaud the Kiwis off the field

Vincent spent valuable time in the middle for his century while the middle order got some six-hitting practice ahead of the sterner challenges to come.

"It's not too bad," says McCullum, "I clothed a couple but they came off OK. A couple came out of the middle so you've got to be pretty happy." Indeed you do.

We'll be back in around 40 minutes for Canada's run chase, or probably more accurately to see if they can bat out 50 overs as they did against England.

But before then, here's Jen. "Can you plug some stuff in the break for us?" asks Andrew Hall over in marketing. "I'll buy you a nice bottle of wine." (Journalists making quotes up? Never) OK, let me tell you about the Cricinfo toolbar - install it and you can get straight to key parts of Cricinfo (live scores, news etc) direct from your browser. Clever stuff, eh, and make mine a Chablis.
