ICC World Cup - 23rd match, Group C

England v Kenya

England won by 7 wickets (with 60 balls remaining)

0.1

Odoyo to Joyce, no run, on leg stump, Joyce comes forward and rather falls away in the process and nudges it to leg

0.2

Odoyo to Joyce, no run, on middle stump this time, Joyce comes forward to defend on the front foot

0.3

Odoyo to Joyce, no run, just short of a length, Joyce goes back and defends on the back foot

0.4

Odoyo to Joyce, no run, cracking ball! Terrible shot, mind...just feeling for it outside off. Very wafty.

0.5

Odoyo to Joyce, 1 run, tucked off his hip for a single just behind square. Odoyo's lines rather inconsistent so far

Vaughan on strike

0.6

Odoyo to Vaughan, no run, very nicely bowled indeed, that's the line to Vaughan. Angling in on middle-and-off, cutting away at the last minute but Vaughan clamps down on it

End of over 1 (1 run) England 1/0 (177 runs required from 49 overs, RR: 1.00, RRR: 3.61)
MP Vaughan    0* (1b)      TM Odoyo    1-0-1-0
EC Joyce    1* (5b)

Peter Ongondo from the other end

1.1

Ongondo to Joyce, no run, good start, but a good leave from Joyce. Just short of a length, Joyce leaves well alone and it takes the wicketkeeper by surprise, spitting up at him and he takes it head height

1.2

Ongondo to Joyce, no run, fuller this time, allowing Joyce to defend it with caution on the front foot. "No run" is the call

1.3

Ongondo to Joyce, FOUR, oh, delicious shot, an elegant check-drive through cover for four. Pure timing

1.4

Ongondo to Joyce, no run, better line just outside off, Joyce watches it pass by

South Africa are pretty much up with the required run rate at the moment in their match with Australia.

1.5

Ongondo to Joyce, no run, too wide of the off stump; Joyce again leaves alone

1.6

Ongondo to Joyce, no run, solidly forward and pushed out square of the wicket

End of over 2 (4 runs) England 5/0 (173 runs required from 48 overs, RR: 2.50, RRR: 3.60)
EC Joyce    5* (11b 1x4)      PJ Ongondo    1-0-4-0
MP Vaughan    0* (1b)      TM Odoyo    1-0-1-0

2.1

Odoyo to Vaughan, no run, very full, Vaughan almost caught by surprise there. Back in his crease he digs it out to mid-on

2.2

Odoyo to Vaughan, 1 run, oops, didn't look like Vaughan was really in control of that, slashing a wide delivery aerially past the two slips through a vacant gully, and down to third man

2.3

Odoyo to Joyce, no run, Joyce goes for a fierce cut stroke, but it's about as well timed as one of my jokes

2.4

Odoyo to Joyce, no run, good delivery rising up at the left-hander who is back in his crease, defending it with a straight bat

To be sure, to be sure

2.5

Odoyo to Joyce, FOUR, good grief that's well timed. On leg stump, he just turned his wrists, playing it at the last minute and it fairly zooted behind square for four. Fine leg didn't have a chance

2.6

Odoyo to Joyce, 2 leg byes, gone! No, but mere millimetres from plucking out his off stump. I'm not sure it didn't clip it, actually - swinging in late to Joyce, so much so that the wicketkeeper was beaten too

End of over 3 (7 runs) England 12/0 (166 runs required from 40 overs, RR: 4.00, RRR: 4.15)
EC Joyce    9* (15b 2x4)      TM Odoyo    2-0-6-0
MP Vaughan    1* (3b)      PJ Ongondo    1-0-4-0

3.1

Ongondo to Vaughan, OUT, Gone! No easy pickings for Vaughan today. The ball spat up at him and all Vaughan could do was fend it, meekly, to Obuya at backward point who dived to his left and took an excellent, low catch

MP Vaughan c Obuya b Ongondo 1 (12m 4b 0x4 0x6) SR: 25.00

3.2

Ongondo to Bell, no run, Bell is confidently, cheekily forward - half a step down the pitch - and prods at it, nudging it back to the bowler before roaring "no" with surprising volume

3.3

Ongondo to Bell, 3 runs, ah, a neat tuck through midwicket, very well timed

3.4

Ongondo to Joyce, 1 run, nicely bowled again, on off stump and it rather kept low, judging by the crab-like defence Joyce offered, spearing it wide of gully and allowing them to scamper a single

3.5

Ongondo to Bell, no run, another half step down the pitch, Ongondo sends it a touch wide and Bell feels for it, tamely. And misses.

3.6

Ongondo to Bell, FOUR, a big stride down the pitch to a wider ball, Bell punches it with the straightest of bats past mid-off

Well timed

End of over 4 (8 runs) England 20/1 (158 runs required from 39 overs, RR: 5.00, RRR: 4.05)
IR Bell    7* (4b 1x4)      PJ Ongondo    2-0-12-1
EC Joyce    10* (16b 2x4)      TM Odoyo    2-0-6-0

4.1

Odoyo to Joyce, no run, ooh, another piece of expert fishing from Joyce

4.2

Odoyo to Joyce, no run, pushed to leg

4.3

Odoyo to Joyce, 1 run, on leg stump once more, pushed to leg once more

4.4

Odoyo to Bell, no run, outside off and he drives it down the ground

4.5

Odoyo to Bell, 1 run, cut past point, delicately played

4.6

Odoyo to Joyce, no run, left alone outside his off stump

End of over 5 (2 runs) England 22/1 (156 runs required from 38 overs, RR: 4.40, RRR: 4.10)
EC Joyce    11* (20b 2x4)      TM Odoyo    3-0-8-0
IR Bell    8* (6b 1x4)      PJ Ongondo    2-0-12-1

5.1

Ongondo to Bell, no run, a cheeky step down the pitch which only culminates in a defensive poke

5.2

Ongondo to Bell, FOUR, now then, I think this was a missed chance by Obuya here. Bell, back-cutting straight to him...but just short and it didn't carry

5.3

Ongondo to Bell, no run, ooh and this one is edged just short of slip

5.4

Ongondo to Bell, 1 run, calmly prodded down to third man

5.5

Ongondo to Joyce, no run, driven back past the bowler

5.6

Ongondo to Joyce, 3 runs, a skip down the pitch and he blocks it down the ground...but in fact has timed it very well, allowing them two

"Enjoying your commentary quite a bit," says Seb, our third Germany-based reader. (quite a bit?) "and occasionally laughing my head off which should make me look like a chopped hydra considering the number of jokes you have been cracking." Chopped hydra? Anyway, thanks, we think

End of over 6 (8 runs) England 30/1 (148 runs required from 37 overs, RR: 5.00, RRR: 4.00)
EC Joyce    14* (22b 2x4)      PJ Ongondo    3-0-20-1
IR Bell    13* (10b 2x4)      TM Odoyo    3-0-8-0

6.1

Odoyo to Joyce, 1 run, Joyce comes forward, pushing it into the covers and is out of the traps immediately. Bell responds and they steal a single

6.2

Odoyo to Bell, no run, outside off stump, he goes back and across to defend off the back foot

6.3

Odoyo to Bell, no run, excellent ball which just moves away from Bell, slightly, who is back in defence

6.4

Odoyo to Bell, no run, down the leg side. Peter Parker raises his arms to signal a wide, before letting them collapse, deciding against it

6.5

Odoyo to Bell, (no ball) 2 runs, rubbish line, clipped off his legs by Bell but Ongondo does brilliantly down at fine-leg, scampering across to save four

6.5

Odoyo to Bell, no run, short. Very wide. Bell tries to reach it, tries to cut it, but can only sponge it to point

6.6

Odoyo to Bell, 1 wide, very wide. Called a wide.

6.6

Odoyo to Bell, no run, nearly! Bit of a ding dong from Bell, stepping across his stumps and trying to do a Pietersen, flicking him over midwicket. But he's not Pietersen, no, he's Ian Bell, and Ian Bell was very nearly bowled

End of over 7 (5 runs) England 35/1 (143 runs required from 36 overs, RR: 5.00, RRR: 3.97)
IR Bell    15* (16b 2x4)      TM Odoyo    4-0-13-0
EC Joyce    15* (23b 2x4)      PJ Ongondo    3-0-20-1

7.1

Ongondo to Joyce, 1 run, grief. Well timed again. Don't think I've seen Joyce time the ball so well in an England shirt. That was just a prod, off the back foot

He'll be out any minute now that I've said that.

7.2

Ongondo to Bell, 1 run, pushed to leg and, oh no - they're going for a run. This could be messy, and Suji picks up one-handed, underarms a throw to the stumps and Bell dives...and makes his ground. Just

7.3

Ongondo to Joyce, no run, defended on the front foot

7.4

Ongondo to Joyce, FOUR, too short. Pulled over midwicket for four, in front of square

7.5

Ongondo to Joyce, FOUR, oh, that's brilliant from Joyce and this is a terrific little innings so far. Too short, Joyce goes back and cuts it square for four. Easy.

7.6

Ongondo to Joyce, 1 run, punched to mid-on

End of over 8 (11 runs) England 46/1 (132 runs required from 35 overs, RR: 5.75, RRR: 3.77)
EC Joyce    25* (28b 4x4)      PJ Ongondo    4-0-31-1
IR Bell    16* (17b 2x4)      TM Odoyo    4-0-13-0

Game on at St Kitts. South Africa are motoring on 182 for 1 after 23

8.1

Odoyo to Joyce, no run, watchfully defended, head right over the ball, to one on his off stump

8.2

Odoyo to Joyce, 1 wide, Joyce skips down the pitch; bowler sends it down the leg side to put him off. And he's wided...that's "harsh," Nasser Hussain says, and I rather agree with him

8.2

Odoyo to Joyce, FOUR, luck of the Irish as Joyce tries to pull, gets a thick inside edge which misses his leg stump down to fine leg

That was mighty close

8.3

Odoyo to Joyce, 1 run, pushed to mid-off and they steal a single

8.4

Odoyo to Bell, OUT, a skip down the pitch, trying to loft him over mid-off, but he can't quite get on top of it and smacks it straight to mid-off. Lazy, complacent stroke

IR Bell c sub (RL Bhudia) b Odoyo 16 (24m 18b 2x4 0x6) SR: 88.88

Ah, here's the ego

8.5

Odoyo to Pietersen, FOUR, my word, a beautiful drive off his first ball. He just punched it, nothing more, past mid-off

8.6

Odoyo to Pietersen, no run, and he goes for another drive, this time to leg but picks out mid-on

End of over 9 (10 runs) England 56/2 (122 runs required from 34 overs, RR: 6.22, RRR: 3.58)
KP Pietersen    4* (2b 1x4)      TM Odoyo    5-0-23-1
EC Joyce    30* (31b 5x4)      PJ Ongondo    4-0-31-1

9.1

Onyango to Joyce, no run, timed to cover

9.2

Onyango to Joyce, no run, short of a length, flicked to midwicket

9.3

Onyango to Joyce, 1 run, turned to leg for a quick single

9.4

Onyango to Pietersen, no run, powerfully pumped down the ground but without timing it

9.5

Onyango to Pietersen, no run, short, and turned with a flick of the wrists but again without really timing

9.6

Onyango to Pietersen, no run, swinging into Pietersen who clumps it into the covers

Talking of clumps, here's Jenny. Whatever, lump. The camera's lingering long on a disconsolate Bell, who's sitting there, clearly reflecting on - and replaying and replaying - his dismissal

End of over 10 (1 run) England 57/2 (121 runs required from 33 overs, RR: 5.70, RRR: 3.66)
KP Pietersen    4* (5b 1x4)      LN Onyango    1-0-1-0
EC Joyce    31* (34b 5x4)      TM Odoyo    5-0-23-1

10.1

Odoyo to Joyce, no run, a good length and that's defended into the covers

10.2

Odoyo to Joyce, 1 wide, down the pitch and Nasser Hussain thinks it's a harsh wide, the batsman just following that one as it travels down leg. I hate to disagree with a former England captain, but I think Umpire Parker is right

10.2

Odoyo to Joyce, (no ball) 1 run, overstepped and that's chased down again

10.2

Odoyo to Pietersen, no run, comes forward and prods that one, standing up, into the short midwicket region

10.3

Odoyo to Pietersen, no run, on leg and that's driven to mid-on

10.4

Odoyo to Pietersen, no run, shuffles across and then down, driving that one to mid-on

10.5

Odoyo to Pietersen, 1 run, outside off and that's driven to mid-off for a quick single

10.6

Odoyo to Joyce, no run, poked off the back foot into the covers

In South Africaland, over in St Kitts, Graeme Smith has retired hurt, Herschelle Gibbs has taken his place. They need 194 from 24.5 overs.

End of over 11 (4 runs) England 61/2 (117 runs required from 32 overs, RR: 5.54, RRR: 3.65)
EC Joyce    32* (37b 5x4)      TM Odoyo    6-0-27-1
KP Pietersen    5* (9b 1x4)      LN Onyango    1-0-1-0

11.1

Onyango to Pietersen, 1 run, on middle and there's a loud shout for a run out, but the throw comes in too late and Pietersen was safely home, in fact he was pretty much tucked up in bed by the time that one came back

11.2

Onyango to Joyce, 2 runs, turned off the hips in front of midwicket, well timed there by Joyce

11.3

Onyango to Joyce, FOUR, commanding punch away off the back foot and that travels

11.4

Onyango to Joyce, no run, on off, good length, and Joyce defends with a straight bat, downwards

11.5

Onyango to Joyce, SIX, short and that's just lifted away off the hips for the maximum. Just needs an 8 next ball then we can appreciate... etc

11.6

Onyango to Joyce, no run, dabbed off the hips, tamely enough, into shortmidwicket

Tony Suji into the attack now. We're in the second Powerplay now

End of over 12 (13 runs) England 74/2 (104 runs required from 31 overs, RR: 6.16, RRR: 3.35)
EC Joyce    44* (42b 6x4 1x6)      LN Onyango    2-0-14-0
KP Pietersen    6* (10b 1x4)      TM Odoyo    6-0-27-1

12.1

Suji to Pietersen, no run, on leg and looked to drive that one through mid-on, but got a leading edge on it

12.2

Suji to Pietersen, 1 run, worked to point and that's well rushed out for a quick single

12.3

Suji to Joyce, no run, slants that one a tad past off and that's driven into the covers

12.4

Suji to Joyce, 1 no ball, similar slantiness, but a bit of an overstep, not good, and less good is the flash that nearly results in an edge. Not good cricket

12.4

Suji to Joyce, no run, on off and that's defended forward

12.5

Suji to Joyce, no run, defended forward

12.6

Suji to Joyce, no run, on the back foot and that's poked behind point

While it's drinks, Nalin's got a few queries right up my street - bookies, and women's cricket. We'll take them in turn.

"Could we know if the bookies give Kenya any chance at all?" Kenya are 16 to 1 against - so, that'll be a no, then. "Also, on a completely unrelated note, I'd like to have Jenny's opinion on how well the Aussie women would fare against the current Bermuda XI." Ah, interesting one.

Bermuda would win, but it would be no walkover. And I'd love to see Cathryn Fitzpatrick tearing in against them.

Varaiya is into the attack with his left-arm tweakers.

End of over 13 (2 runs) England 76/2 (102 runs required from 30 overs, RR: 5.84, RRR: 3.40)
EC Joyce    44* (47b 6x4 1x6)      AO Suji    1-0-2-0
KP Pietersen    7* (12b 1x4)      LN Onyango    2-0-14-0

13.1

Varaiya to Pietersen, no run, dropped. Good delivery, perfect first ball, pitched on off, moved away and Pietersen played that straight into Ouma's gloves

13.2

Varaiya to Pietersen, 2 runs, driven out over cover

13.3

Varaiya to Pietersen, FOUR, looped up and that's driven through the covers

13.4

Varaiya to Pietersen, 1 run, swept off the off stick and that's worked round to the 45

13.5

Varaiya to Joyce, no run, defended forward, tucked up quietly there

13.6

Varaiya to Joyce, no run, turns into the lefthander who just to say manages to bring his bat down on that one to work it short to square

Curate's egg of a first over from Varaiya, but he should have grabbed the wicket, there

End of over 14 (7 runs) England 83/2 (95 runs required from 29 overs, RR: 5.92, RRR: 3.27)
EC Joyce    44* (49b 6x4 1x6)      HA Varaiya    1-0-7-0
KP Pietersen    14* (16b 2x4)      AO Suji    1-0-2-0

14.1

Suji to Pietersen, no run, creeps into that shot, shuffling across off, and drives that straight

14.2

Suji to Pietersen, no run, dragged that a touch short and Pietersen pokes that out to mid-on

14.3

Suji to Pietersen, FOUR, beautiful shot past the man at cover, to quote Mark Nicholas, he's a big strong boy, and he's just helped that one on its way

14.4

Suji to Pietersen, no run, clamps down on that one, driving it cover

14.5

Suji to Pietersen, no run, driven to mid-on

14.6

Suji to Pietersen, no run, driven, again, to mid-on, again

Hint of desperation from Kenya's bowlers, and from Stephen who groans this: "Having looked back at the commentary I notice we almost had a Beethoven moment with Odoyo to Joyce (Ode to Joy)." No cigar

End of over 15 (4 runs) England 87/2 (91 runs required from 28 overs, RR: 5.80, RRR: 3.25)
KP Pietersen    18* (22b 3x4)      AO Suji    2-0-6-0
EC Joyce    44* (49b 6x4 1x6)      HA Varaiya    1-0-7-0

The third Powerplay, all two overs of it, has been taken

15.1

Varaiya to Joyce, 1 run, can't pierce the inner ring with that drive to mid-on

15.2

Varaiya to Pietersen, no run, Pietersen, like an excitable rabbit, scampers down to sniff the ball, decides it's a bit too dangerous and defends over it, before shuffling back to his crease

15.3

Varaiya to Pietersen, no run, defended forward

15.4

Varaiya to Pietersen, 1 run, Pietersen frisks down the track now, driving that one through mid-on - there was a throw back to the end he was running to, but again he was in safe

15.5

Varaiya to Joyce, no run, plants that one on a good length and Joyce does the jolly good defending bit

15.6

Varaiya to Joyce, 1 run, comes outside off and sweeps that back to the man at deep backward square leg

Varaiya finding some tweak there, but the momentum is really with England and they're running away with this

End of over 16 (3 runs) England 90/2 (88 runs required from 27 overs, RR: 5.62, RRR: 3.25)
EC Joyce    46* (52b 6x4 1x6)      HA Varaiya    2-0-10-0

16.1

Suji to Joyce, 1 run, driven to midwicket and there's a quick single

16.2

Suji to Pietersen, no run, Pietersen comes down the track - he's keen to get this finished, even now - and drives that back to mid-off

16.3

Suji to Pietersen, no run, stands tall and square-drives that one to point

16.4

Suji to Pietersen, FOUR, outside off and that's crashed through the covers on the up, waiting for it patiently before despatching it hard and fast

16.5

Suji to Pietersen, FOUR, Pietersen gets away with that one, and then some, horrible shot, going to drive that through cover and inside edges past the keeper

16.6

Suji to Pietersen, no run, leans out and I to that drive and crashes it very very hard indeed to cover

Gibbs is just out - is that a turning point? Hmm...

End of over 17 (9 runs) England 99/2 (79 runs required from 26 overs, RR: 5.82, RRR: 3.03)
KP Pietersen    27* (30b 5x4)      AO Suji    3-0-15-0

17.2

Varaiya to Joyce, no run, outside off and that nips back in at the lefthander

17.3

Varaiya to Joyce, no run, defended off the back foot

17.4

Varaiya to Joyce, 1 run, outside off, again, a touch short and that's worked into square

17.5

Varaiya to Pietersen, no run, outside off again and Pietersen comes down the track, as is his wont, to meet that one and he decides in the end the best mode of defence is defence

17.6

Varaiya to Pietersen, no run, left alone outside off

Prince has fallen - the tide's turning Australia's way. Over here, it's Kamande coming into the attack

End of over 18 (2 runs) England 101/2 (77 runs required from 25 overs, RR: 5.61, RRR: 3.08)
KP Pietersen    27* (32b 5x4)      HA Varaiya    3-0-12-0
EC Joyce    48* (57b 6x4 1x6)      AO Suji    3-0-15-0

18.1

Kamande to Joyce, no run, high backlift and swishes that one to cover

18.2

Kamande to Joyce, 2 runs, stays over the wicket to the lefthander, by the way, and that's swept round behind square

That brings up Joyce's third ODI fifty, this one from 59 balls with six fours and one six

18.3

Kamande to Joyce, no run, false shot, dangling the bat outside off, and that's beaten him

18.4

Kamande to Joyce, no run, defended tidily enough this time

18.5

Kamande to Joyce, 1 run, more defence, with a flourish turning that into something of a drive to mid-off

18.6

Kamande to Pietersen, 1 run, driven to mid-on for a quick single

19.3

Varaiya to Joyce, 1 run, worked off the front foot into midwicket

19.4

Varaiya to Pietersen, SIX, outside off and smashed, against the spin, through midwicket. "He's a freak," declares Willo

19.5

Varaiya to Pietersen, 2 runs, hmm, third umpire called in to adjudicate if Bhudiya, the sub, cut that one off inside the midwicket rope. And he did

19.6

Varaiya to Pietersen, 2 runs, well waited for a gentle dink patted through midwicket

I've dragged Andrew Miller away from his rum-in-coconut to give us an observer's eye view of events in Group A. "A funny thing is taking place in Basseterre at the moment," he begins. "It's becoming a question of which team bottles it the least. Australia's bowlers are cannon-fodder, but there are some South African nerves jangling all the same. I still back the Boks, though." Thank you, Andrew, carry on slurping.

Well, a comprehensive win for England there, outclassing Kenya emphatically. Encouraging signs, too, for England with their bowlers showing good form - Anderson bowled a terrific opening spell. Joyce was calm and patient in his 75; Pietersen was dominant and forceful in his 56. "We're getting better suited to these wickets, which I think is key," he said after the match. "It's nice to contribute to the team, and to win is special. To get fifty odd in a very important game, yes - it's special." It's all very special and, on that note, it's goodbye from us.
