ICC World Cup - 24th match, Group B

Bangladesh v Bermuda

Bangladesh won by 7 wickets (with 21 balls remaining) (D/L method)

11.50 : The game is starting

11.37 It has started drizzling again, a real dampener especially after the umpires announced a 11.50 start. The stumps are still on but the pitch is covered. Bangladesh players are warming up. Word is that the players will take lunch in 10 minutes.

11.25 : All the covers are off and the stumps are being inserted. The crowd are understandably relieved. We are still awaiting an official word from the umpires. The staff are busy running ropes along the outfield to dry it.

11.15 : Some good news at last! It has stopped raining and the groundstaff are out there in the middle. We understand that the skies have brightened. The groundstaff are just about to remove the covers though there is still plenty of water on the surface. The umpires are inspecting the conditions and a few Bangladesh players are in the middle.

10.40 : The news isn't very encouraging. The rain has picked up and the weather forecast has predicted more wet weather. The unofficial word is that no play is likely before the lunch interval, which is roughly 2 hours and 20 minutes from now. As always, we will keep you updated. There's still plenty to read and catch up with on Cricinfo and here's my recommendation to keep you occupied - Siddhartha Vaidyanathan's article on the West Indies rebels of 1983. Siddhartha had the privilege of meeting a few of the players during his tour last year with the Indian team.

10.25 : The covers are still on. Our sources at the ground informed us that the rain did stop for a while. However, it has started drizzling again. Stay tuned for further updates. On the bright side, the drainage facilities at the ground are quite effective so we should hopefully get some play today, provided the rain stops. Fingers crossed....

09.30 : Unfortunately, the rain has picked up. All we need to do now is wait and watch. We will keep you updated as and when we receive official word.

09.00 local time : Unfortunately, rain has intervened and the covers are on. We understand that it is a steady drizzle and the start has been delayed.

Hello and welcome to Cricinfo's live ball-by-ball coverage of the final match of the group stage of this World Cup, between Bangladesh and Bermuda at the Queen's Park Oval in Trinidad. I am Kanishkaa Balachandran and will take you through this crucial game, for Bangladesh in particular.

Those who predicted that this group, Group B, would be the most interesting in the World Cup were absolutely spot on. While Sri Lanka are through to the Super Eights, Bangladesh and India will fight it out for a place in the second stage. A Bangladesh win will guarantee them a spot while a defeat will, in all probability assure India a back-door entry, given that they are ahead on the net run rate. The fate of two teams depends on the result of this match. Click here to view the points table.

Bermuda have nothing to lose, and will be looking to sign off on a high. However, Bangladesh start as favourites and their professional display against India is an indication that they are indeed a vastly improved side. Click here to read the preview of today's game, by Utpal Shuvro. Also read captain Habibul Bashar's views.

Toss Bangladesh have won the toss and will bowl first. Habibul Bashar said that he wanted to give his bowlers the best use of the conditions.

Pitch : This is the same one used for the match between India and Bermuda last Monday. There is a bit of live grass on the surface, though there doesn't seem to be too much moisture. The seamers should find the conditions helpful at the start, given the overcast conditions as well. There are cracks on the surface for the spinners to exploit and Bangladesh are loaded in that department. The humid weather should test the players through this game.

Teams Bangladesh will field the same side from the previous game, which means that Shahadat Hossain, the fast bowler, will sit out again. Bermuda have made one change. Allrounder Saleem Mukkudem comes in for Malachi Jones, the opening bowler.

Bangladesh : 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Shahriar Nafees, 3 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 4 Aftab Ahmed, 5 Saqibul Hasan, 6 Habibul Bashar (capt), 7 Mohammad Ashraful, 8 Mohammad Rafique, 9 Mashrafe Mortaza, 10 Abdur Razzak, 11 Syed Rasel

Bermuda :1 Oliver Pitcher, 2 Steven Outerbridge, 3 Delyone Borden, 4 David Hemp, 5 Irvine Romaine (capt), 6 Janeiro Tucker, 7 Dean Minors (wk), 8 Lionel Cann, 9 Kevin Hurdle, 10 Dwayne Leverock, 11 Saleem Mukkudem

Unfortunately the heavens have opened and the rain has stopped play. The groundstaff are back on, adding the covers in a flurry. As we mentioned earlier, this has been reduced to 41 overs. We will get inform you of the revised playing conditions soon. In the event of this match being washed out, both teams will earn one point each, which means that Bangladesh will go through to the Super Eights. However, there is a reserve day tomorrow. If the match isn't completed today, play will resume from the same position tomorrow. In other words, the match will not be replayed from the very beginning.

12.43 The official word from the ground is that play will start in 12 minutes, at 12.55. The match has been further reduced to 35 overs-a-side. Five bowlers will bowl a maximum of seven overs each.

While all the talk has centered around the possibilities of India and Bangladesh entering the Super Eights, did anyone spare a thought for Bermuda? Well, Jonathan Smith, one of our readers, did. Here's what he had to say: "If Bermuda score 740 then bowl Bangladesh out for 55 this will give them a net run rate of +1.23, enough to get Bermuda into the super-8s ahead of India."

7.4

Syed Rasel to Pitcher, 1 run, wide again and Pitcher gets a thickish outside edge which flies towards third man who had to run a few yards to his right to cut that off, optimistic shouts of 'catch it' but the ball landed in the middle of nowhere

Bad news again folks, the players are scampering off the field with the rain not letting up. One can't help feel a bit of sympathy for Bermuda. The conditions for batting haven't gotten any easier and they have already lost three quick wickets. Losing Hemp was a big blow and it's upto Romaine and Pitcher to steer the side out of choppy waters once the players return, which hopefully shouldn't take too long.

Just a reminder to our readers about the likelihood of the match not being completed today - If the match isn't completed, play will resume from the same position tomorrow. In other words, the match will not be replayed from the very beginning.

13.50 : No word yet on the resumption of play. Please stay tuned for updates. If the match does continue tomorrow it will continue to be 35 overs.

It's back to a steady drizzle now. Haven't we seen enough rain already? The batsmen are heading back to the pavilion and the Bangladesh players haven't quite headed indoors. They have congregated near the boundary, optimistc of a resumption. Well, the rain has stopped! More like a passing shower. Play will resume again. Romaine and Pitcher are walking out. One wonders if they even had time to take their gloves off.

15.37 : Alright some good news! The covers are off and play will resume in less than 10 minutes from now. It has been further reduced to 21 overs-a-side, weather permitting.

The umpires are walking out to the center and so are the batsmen. Hopefully we have seen the last of the rain interruptions.

Earlier: The players are heading back to the pavilion, Bangladesh seem rather reluctant to do so, the covers are on the pitch. The blue covers are now coming out to cover the square around the pitch. That's not a very good sign, the steady drizzle continues.

This is the fourth rain break, counting out the delayed start. This will no doubt affect the concentration and rhythm of the batsmen and test the patience of the spectators.

A note to the readers who may have just joined us - If the match isn't completed today, play will resume from the same position tomorrow. In other words, the match will not be replayed from the very beginning. It will continue to be 30 overs-a-side (as of now).

Readers have been writing in, asking about the playing conditions in rain-shortened matches like these. It takes a minimum of 20 overs to constitute a game. If Bermuda manage to play out at least 20 overs, Bangladesh's target will be revised according to Duckworth/Lewis method. It hasn't come down to that now.

In the event of the match being washed out (including the reserve day tomorrow), both teams will earn a point each and Bangladesh will advance to the Super Eights (with three points). For all those pining/hoping for India to sneak through, Bermuda will have to beat Bangladesh, simple as that.

15.20 : It's still raining in Port of Spain and the covers are still on. Chances of play resuming today seem bleak. Looks like all will depend on the reserve day tomorrow. We will update you when we receive some official word.

Readers have been asking about possible D/L targets. It hasn't reached that stage yet as we have a whole day tomorrow to complete the game. Our advice is to wait for a final word from the umpires.

So this has turned into a virtual 20-20 hitout. The final target will be revised and we will keep you posted on that. Late hitting by Lionel Cann and Dean Minors has boosted Bermuda's target. Well the rain has only made the equation more interesting. Both teams are in with a fair chance, as Bangladesh may be required to score quickly. They have the power hitters to take them home but will have to approach it carefully, given the overcast conditions. Should be an absorbing, yet short chase. Stay tuned.

Bangladesh require 95 off 21 overs. NO REVISED TARGET
