ICC World Cup - 26th match, Super Eights

South Africa v Sri Lanka

South Africa won by 1 wicket (with 10 balls remaining)

Hello and welcome to the second game in Super Eights. South Africa v Sri Lanka.

I am Sriram Veera and will be bringing you all the live action today. Srinivas Raju will be doing the scoring.

Toss Mahela has opted to bat first. Graeme Smith had admitted that toss could be the key. "But I must say. I hope it's not going to be a case of winning the match if you win the toss. That would turn this match into too much of a gamble," he said.

Rain has stopped. So here are some stats for your perusal while we wait for the start. South Africa and Sri Lanka have met 44 times in ODIs, and the honours are even, with both winning 21 times. There is nothing to separate them at neutral venues either, with eight wins each. Since the last World Cup they have met ten times, and while Sri Lanka have won seven, five of those victories were at home. In three World Cup clashes, it's one win apiece and a tie in 2003. For more numbers, click here.

Pitch From Dileep Premachandran's tour diary, "there was the hint of a smile around Tom Moody's lips when he was asked about the pitch to be used for the game. Shaved as bald as Kojak and the colour of sand, it could easily have been transported from the Premadasa in Colombo." So it's likely to be a trial by spin for SA.

0.1

Ntini to Jayasuriya, no run, beaten Full in length and it veers away with the usual Ntini angle and Jayasuriya pushes at it tentatively.

1.4

Ntini to Jayasuriya, no run, Almost a run out. Jayasuriya is itching to get off the mark and sets off after pushing to cover. Tharanga is not in a suicidal mood and sends him back. de Villiers swoops in and under-arms a direct hit but Jayasuriya scampers home in time. it was refered to third umpire.

Apoorva Mathur: "I know it's a long world cup but if the Lankans win today surely they'll be favourites for the semis! On another note, you think the South African batsman can read Murali? What's their record against him?"

Well.... Muttiah Muralitharan has collected 46 wickets in 30 matches at 23.13. And Smith said this on Murali: "We've played against Murali quite a lot now," said Graeme Smith. "It still doesn't make it easy to play him."

21.2

Hall to Sangakkara, no run, full in length, moving away from off stump line, driven to extra cover where de Villiers moves across to make a neat diving stop

21.3

Hall to Sangakkara, OUT, Sangakkara walks. It was banged in short and just outside leg stump, Sangakkara shaped to pull but the ball moved in a touch and cramped him up. The ball brushed the right glove and Boucher dived to his right to take it. The pair of Silva and Dilshan that took Sri Lanka out of trouble in the game against India will be on.

21.5

Hall to Silva, no run, huge nip-backer. Landed on a length, well outside off stump and jagged back in. Silva stabs at it and the ball thuds into the inner thigh in front of off stump. There is a shout for lbw but umpire Harper doesn't agree. Hawk eye suggests it would have taken out middle.

21.6

29.2

Pollock to Arnold, no run, Full ball on off. Driven to mid-off. Much better spell from Pollock, the sort we've been accustomed to over the years. The last game was a nightmare for him, where he conceded his most expensive one-day figures, and this didn't start too promisingly.

Intiaz: How is the pitch playing, seems to help the seamers a bit. Is the outfield quick? How do you guys like the stadium, among the best in the WI?

It has got slower as the game has progressed. There is some turn but it is Peterson who is bowling. So really can't say how much turn is there. He rarely gives air or rips it. The stadium is fab. From Dileep Premachandran's tour diary, "The one thing you can say is that it's a beautiful ground, with a lush green outfield and three magnificent stands. But the prettiest part of it is undoubted the grassy mound, perhaps modelled on the old Hill in Sydney and the similar patch of grass at Adelaide. For those looking to party, it will undoubtedly be the place to be, especially if the sun comes out and the beer starts to flow."

Langeveldt to Arnold, no run, Swing and a miss. Arnold tries to slog a fullish delivery outside off, misses.

More fancy betting. This time from Prajwal. "They'll lose Arnold in the 48th over and Vaas will have two sixes under his belt at the end of this innings"

Well the 48th over is gone, let's see whether the rest of your prediction holds up

48.2

Langeveldt to Arnold, OUT, Ah! Arnold falls. Full-pitched on the middle stump, Arnold goes down on a bent knee and attempts a slog across the line. He gets a top-edge which is snaffled up by Boucher.

M Muralitharan run out 1 (1m 1b 0x4 0x6) SR: 100.00

Sri Lanka all out for 209. They would have taken it considering they were 98 for 5 but they had reached 195 for 5 and you would have thought they would end up with more. But the collapse - five wickets for 14 runs, has meant SA have got the edge. It is a slow pitch with some tennis ball bounce and could prove to be a tricky chase. It appears that SL are some 25-30 short but you never know. The pitch is abetting spin and the ball is stopping on the batsmen. SA will be confident of pulling it off. Join us in a while for the chase.
