ICC World Cup - 41st match, Super Eights

New Zealand v South Africa

New Zealand won by 5 wickets (with 10 balls remaining)

We're ready to play ball. The umpires, Mark Benson and Daryl Harper, have taken their positions. James Franklin will bowl to Graeme Smith, left-arm over the wicket to left-handed bat. Two slips in place, three men saving runs on the off side, two on the on side inside the circle. Decent crowd out, though nowhere near house full. A few bugles blaring and drums beating. Here we go! No, not yet, some problems with the sightscreen. Benson waves his hands around, then says chuck this, and walks down to the long-on boundary to have a chat with the champion causing trouble. Smith not impressed either. Okay, all set now. Here's Franklin.

Hello all, and thanks for tuning into Cricinfo's live coverage of today's game, in Grenada, where South Africa take on New Zealand. I'm Jamie Alter, and it's my pleasure to bring you the commentary for what I hope is a good, exciting contest.

Toss: Graeme Smith flipped, Stephen Fleming called heads, won, and decided that New Zealand will field first. Jeetan Patel comes in as the second spinner. South Africa too have opted for Robin Peterson's left-arm spin, and Loots Bosman is the man to make way for him.

Pitch report: The surface looks like it has some dark, somewhat damp areas. It's not a serious problem, says Michael Holding, and the pitch should play out quite well - read flat - for the batsmen. There are a few dark clouds around, but they shouldn't be a consideration.

The Scenario: A victory for either side will virtually seal a spot in the semi-finals. New Zealand go into the game after a loss to Sri Lanka and they expect South Africa to be equally tough opponents. A successful top order was the key to success in South Africa's last match against West Indies when they piled up a total of 356 for 4, but the attack they face today is a far more polished one, with the likes of Shane Bond and Daniel Vettori. A win today would give South Africa a four-point cushion over England, their main rivals for a semi-final spot, ahead of their clash coming up on Tuesday.

For a more concise account of what the lead-up to this game has been, and the significance it holds, do read Andrew Miller's preview.

Vital stat: For those interested, let me tell you that head-to-head, South Africa have won 27 and New Zealand just 15.

Those of you who follow the keen rivalry these two sides share will remember their thrilling encounter in the 2003 World Cup, where Fleming scored a brilliant unbeaten 134 to clinch a nine-wicket victory.

Do read Dileep V's stats piece as well.

Captain speak Stephen Fleming: "We can play a hell of a lot better than we have. This time rebounds well and knows when it plays poorly. We don't have much time to train but most of it is mental and we'll get that right."

Graeme Smith: "New Zealand have played well in the tournament, and they're a pretty balanced team. They bat pretty low and they have a lot of options in their bowling department. But if we can play the type of game we played against West Indies, allowing ourselves the freedom to play that way, setting up opportunities to attack, it will bode well."

As we wait for matters to get underway, let me remind you that you can now watch an animated representation of our commentary on Cricinfo 3D. It uses all our scoring data to render a 3d representation of the game, with various camera angles for you to play around with, and it has features such as wagon wheels, pitch maps, and the live scorecard. There are also replays after every wicket and boundary on demand, as well as celebrations for wickets. Yes, yes, it's free. Don't be shy to click away.

Ah, yes, another bit of fun for you all - a host of downloadable stuff for you.

0.2

Franklin to Smith, no run, fuller, outside off stump, and this time Smith gets well forward in defence and pushes the ball to cover

0.3

Franklin to Smith, no run, good one, movement off the seam as Franklin pitches this one outside off stump and Smith has a drive and a miss

Franklin to Smith, no run, slower one, almost a yorker on off stump, which Smith defends to the on side with a firm 'WAIT' to de Villiers at the other end

0.6

Franklin to Smith, 1 run, back of a length outside off stump, just, and as it comes in Smith turns it in front of mid-on and calls for the quick single, South Africa on their way

Here's Bond. Shane Bond.

Bond to Smith, no run, and again, another fuller delivery, with good away movement, and a leaden-footed Smith drives and connects with air, and wasnt far from off stump either, well bowled

1.3

GC Smith c Oram b Bond 1 (7m 12b 0x4 0x6) SR: 8.33

A great breakthrough for New Zealand. South Africa lose their captain, who looked all at sea against Bond. Bond moved the ball around outside off stump to create doubt in Smith's mind, beat the bat, and then got him to play a loose shot.

Here's Kallis.

1.6

Bond to Kallis, no run, back of a length on the stumps, Kallis gets behind the line and defends to the on side

End of over 2 (2 runs) South Africa 3/1 (RR: 1.50)

AB de Villiers lbw b Franklin 0 (10m 6b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

4.2

Franklin to Kallis, no run, fuller outside off stump, Kallis square-drives and Taylor dives at point and saves runs

4.3

Franklin to Kallis, 1 run, there's the one that lands full and then comes in, and Kallis manages to get bat onto it, turning it to the on side for a quick single, good movement from Franklin

4.4

Franklin to Gibbs, no run, strays onto leg stump, Gibbs looks to cash in with the flick but gets rapped on the leg, well outside the line of impact, however

4.5

Franklin to Gibbs, no run, now he moves on back outside off stump, in that corridor of uncertainty, and Gibbs thinks about playing it but then holds the bat back at the nth second

4.6

Franklin to Gibbs, no run, overpitched outside off stump, there to be hit maybe, but he swings at it and gets beaten, to end a good over of clinical left-arm seam bowling

5.3

Bond to Kallis, no run, great ball, bending his back into it and landing it back of a length, with more lift, and then gets it to leave Kallis' backfoot defensive

5.4

Bond to Kallis, no run, wow! Again Bonds puts his all into this one, banging it in outside off stump, and getting it to leave Kallis as he stands and defends

5.5

Bond to Kallis, no run, this one's straighter, still on that back of length spot, Kallis gets well behind it in a hurry and defends to the on side

5.6

Bond to Kallis, 1 run, back of a length outside off stump, Kallis plays at it off the backfoot and gets a thick edge all along the ground in the gap at gulley down to third man for one

A good over from Bond again, making Kallis play every ball. Sir Richard Hadlee would be proud.

6.4

Franklin to Kallis, no run, a tad slower, perhaps, landing on a good length outside off stump and Kallis leaves it alone for the 'keeper

6.5

7.3

Bond to Kallis, no run, back of a good length on off stump, Kallis gets right behind the ball and defends back to Bond

A light drizzle blows across the ground now. Covers on stand-by. Umpires confer and call for them, though the drip-drip seems to be moving away. No, the covers are sent back and we can move on.

Vettori to Kallis, OUT, pulls the trigger but falls flat on his face. Vettori flights one on middle, good loop that time and Kallis down the track and gives himself a bit of room as well. He hasn't got to the pitch of the ball but goes ahead with the wild slash anyway. The attempt was to get it over extra cover but he can't get the timing, it's skied up in the air and Bond completes a well-judged catch at the cover region. That is a big wicket. So, New Zealand came out firing on a pitch that made run-scoring difficult at the start, thanks to some damp spots on the surface. Gibbs and Prince led the restoration act very well, but fell to the part-time slow stuff of McMillan, who ripped out three wickets in a superb move from captain Fleming. South Africa have struggled to 193 for 7. Do join us in about 40 minutes - thats 13:44 local, 17:44 GMT - for New Zealand's reply. I'll see you then.

End of over 50 (6 runs) South Africa 193/7
