ICC World Cup - 46th match, Super Eights

West Indies v Bangladesh

West Indies won by 99 runs

Right...... all set. Players are in the middle. Chris Gayle and Devon Smith are walking out to the middle. \

----------- Hi and welcome to West Indies v Bangladesh. I am Sriram Veera and I shall be bringing you all the live action today.

Toss: Bangladesh have chosen to field.

As they say ... nothing but pride to play for. A dismal campaign for West Indies while it has been a schizoprehenic one for Bangladesh. They have been inconsistent so far. At times it has been magical - Tamim Iqbal charging down the track like a marauder at Zaheer Khan, Ashraful playing those cheeky lap shots, but it has been interspersed with some average stuff. Bashar, the captain, has been pretty quiet with the bat. Bangladesh fans have been baying for his head. Check the site Banglacricket.com.

West Indies ... well, nothing much has gone right. Lara is, probably, approaching the end of his ODI career. Gayle has been mute with the bat, Bravo has had a average tournament and no batsman has really gone on to produce anything special. One gets the feeling, they depended too much on Gayle to fire, he didn't and West Indies are now left playing for the crumbs.

Here is Sambit Bal on the flawed legacy of Brian Lara.

Fazeer Mohammad, that passionate commentator on West Indies cricket, writes, "Victory against Bangladesh won't change anything, but at least the Kensington Oval will be associated with West Indian success once again. Then again, you never know." Click here to read.

The Caribbean fans are, obviously, not too chuffed with the team. Check out the lively and lovely Caribbeancricket.com.

While we wait for play, check out Cricinfo's new game. Slog Out.

Very nice from Mortaza. He had been getting the ball to bend in to the left-hand batsmen so far but this one went on straight and that fooled Smith. He ended up playing a ugly waft across the line.

Powerplay taken at the start of the over. This was introduced by the ICC in 2005 to try to spruce up the middle overs one-day internationals by enforcing the bowling side to take three blocks overs in which they have to have extra fielders within the 30-yard circle. The first Powerplay is mandatory through the first ten overs of the innings, the second and third ones, of five overs each, can be taken at any other time. In rain-reduced matches the duration of the second and third Powerplays is reduced in proportion to the overall reduction.

Cleton Burnett/williams joins in "West Indies cricket board lacks people with vision. This is not a condemnation, but is a fact. I speak not only of this era of management, but it has always been. We never make provision for the future of West Indies cricket. It is a shame that West Indies cricket has been around for so long, and we do not have full- time cricketing academy. That three months "thing" we had in Grenada was a big joke, absolute non-sense. Look around and see where the other countries are getting their players from. Certainly it is not raw talent."

Bygone are the days when we go to bed and wake up and find a Holding or Haynes. Even if we were to do that, it would not be long before they are worked out by the other countries. 43.1

Syed Rasel to Sarwan, 1 run, It should have been a run out! Rudi Koertzen didn't refer it upstairs. Pity. overpitched on the leg stump line, flicked to midwicket. Saqib swooped on the ball and fired in a direct hit. Sarwan is just short of the crease but there was not a huge appeal and Rudi didn't go upstairs. hmm..

45.4

Mashrafe Mortaza to Lara, SIX, Wow. That scintillating whiplash square-drive from the master. Maximum. It was fullish and outside off, Lara whipped it away off the front foot and it flew over point. Mortaza looks stunned. That was a great trademark shot from Lara. As Sambit Bal wrote long time back, "For bliss, song, dance and glory who else but Brian Lara."

45.5

47.6

Mashrafe Mortaza to Sarwan, 2 runs, slower one, outside off stump, Sarwan backs away, waits, carves it to left of deep point and runs hard to come back for two. Had the throw been accurate at the striker's end, things could have gone interesting

RR Sarwan    75* (83b 5x4 1x6)      Mashrafe Mortaza    9-2-32-1

Two balls left. In the over as well. Sarwan needs 10.

49.5

Mashrafe Mortaza to Sarwan, 1 run, swat. Length-delivery, outside off stump, Sarwan tries to flat-bat it , mistimes it towards extra cover. that's that. He won't get to his ton.

49.6

Mashrafe Mortaza to Bravo, 1 run, comes down the track, has a wild swing across the line, gets a outer edge down to third man. Bravo comes half-way down the track for the second run, the tired Sarwan is not interested and Bravo retreats.

West Indies limped at the start as Syed Rasel and Mortaza applied the squeeze effectively. The spinners further stifled strokeplay but Sarwan and Lara, in a little cameo, broke free at the end and they reached a respectable 230. Will it be enough? One has to say, advantage is with Bangladesh. It will be interesting to see how they go about the chase. Join us in a while to find out.

HRG: WIth two nineties in this edition, Sarwan is the third batsman to register two 90's in the same edition of a WC. 2007 is the only edition with two batsman scoring two 90's. Michael Clarke is the other one. Sachin Tendulkar did it in 2003.

Deepak Ahuja: "Comment about Duncan Fletcher resigning:I feel ashamed to sound so ignorant, but I don't know who is West Indies coach. India, Pakistan, and England played poorly, and everybody started baying for the coach's blood. Why is the West Indian coach so low-key (or blame-free?)? Why don't we hear about him as much as other 'high-profile' coaches?"

Hmm ... Bennett King is the coach.
