ICC World Cup - 1st semi final

New Zealand v Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka won by 81 runs

We're minutes away from the start. The umpires, Rudi Koertzen and Simon Taufel, are at their positions. The New Zealanders are taking their places. The Sri Lankan openers are walking out.

From the ground, Andrew Miller buzzes me: "Not a lot to report just yet, except the crowd is truly dismal. World Cup fever just hasn't resurfaced since West Indies left Jamaica last month."

James Franklin has the new ball. Upul Tharanga to face. Two slips in place, trhee men on the off side, two on the leg side, all saving runs.

So after 64 games, including those lovely warm-ups, we've reached the highly anticipated first semi-final of the 2007 World Cup. I'm Jamie Alter, and together with Siddhartha Vaidyanathan and Sriram Veera, will be bringing you the live commentary of today's humdinger, New Zealand v Sri Lanka in Jamaica.

Pitch report: Neither side has played at Sabina Park during the tournament, where the pitch is expected to provide extra bounce. No one's sticking their necks out too far, but even the bits of wear and tear on the surface should really come into consideration as the day progress. Muttiah Muralitharan told Ian Smith that it looked like a "real Sri Lankan surface". Interesting, very interesting.

Toss: Mahela Jayawardene won the toss and decided to have a bat. Both sides are at full strength with Shane Bond and Jacob Oram back for New Zealand and Lasith Malinga returning from an ankle injury. Jeetan Patel keeps his place in the side. So does an out-of-form Upul Tharanga.

As Dileep Premachandran, one of our men at the venue, pointed out yesterday, Sri Lanka are boosted by Malinga's return .

New Zealand have been here before - four times, in fact - and will be have to be at their best to get past a well-rounded Sri Lanka, who've played some excellent cricket to get here. New Zealand started out brilliantly, but struggled against the two favourites, Australia and the side they're up against today.

Captain speak: Mahela Jayawardene: "Like any other cricketers in the world, our batsmen love to play on bouncy tracks when the ball is coming on - and we've got a decent bowling attack to complement those conditions."

Stephen Fleming: "They're probably the most balanced bowling attack here. They're very unorthodox and provide massive challenges to our batters. The flip side is that the batting is probably not as strong as other teams around."

Let me remind you that you can now watch an animated representation of our commentary on Cricinfo 3D. It uses all our scoring data to render a 3d representation of the game, with various camera angles for you to play around with, and it has features such as wagon wheels, pitch maps, and the live scorecard. There are also replays after every wicket and boundary on demand, as well as celebrations for wickets. Oh, and it's free. Click away.

Haliastur Indus has a thought: I'm just wondering whether NZ have made the same mistake INDIA did in '96: focusing too much on getting Sanath out, they just don't know what to do when he falls quickly & cheaply".

For those of you who are wondering, a Powerplay was taken at the end of the 10th over. Now Fleming has decided to take the final Powerplay too, at the start of the 15th.

15.1

Franklin to Tharanga, 1 leg bye, Franklin from around the wicket, straight and full, Tharanga tries to work away to the leg side and is rapped on the pads, huge appeal for lbw but Taufel says no. Batsmen scamper a leg bye and replays show that Tharanga is very lucky there. That was probably going on to hit the top of middle

15.2

Franklin to Jayawardene, no run, full and on off, defended confidently to the on side. Jayawardene can be a shaky starter, once set he is a delight to watch

15.3

Franklin to Jayawardene, no run, pushed to the off side again, Franklin whips the bails off with his left foot (while following through)

15.4

Franklin to Jayawardene, 1 run, off the mark with a single, tapped away to the point region and completes a quick single

15.5

Franklin to Tharanga, no run, driven confidently to mid-off, full and pushed cleanly. Tharanga seems to have found his groove, despite having a forgettable World Cup so far

15.6

Franklin to Tharanga, FOUR, slightly wide, not that short but Tharanga latches on. Flashes that with timing and gets it past the diving point for a rasping four. He's stylish, he's confident and these are great signs for Sri Lanka

16.1

Oram to Jayawardene, no run, slightly slower ball from Oram, straight and full. Jayawardene pats it to the on side tamely. The policy seems to be: wait for the loose ones

16.2

Oram to Jayawardene, no run, solid defence again, Jayawardene gets behind the line and gets his head over the ball well.

16.3

Oram to Jayawardene, no run, tapped to the off side solidly, not taking any chances with Oram's nagging length.

16.4

Oram to Jayawardene, 1 run, slightly wide and Jayawardene cuts it cutely behind point for a single

16.5

Oram to Tharanga, 1 run, cut away for a single, not that wide again but Tharanga gets on the back foot and slaps it towards cover for a single. It keeps slightly low and he makes allowance for that by keeping his eyes on the ball till the last moment

16.6

Oram to Jayawardene, no run, worked away confidently again. Jaywardene doing it just right, it seems

17.1

Franklin to Tharanga, 1 run, Franklin drifting onto the pads this time and Tharanga, with those gifted wrists, turns it away elegantly for a single. They think of two but don't take the chance

17.2

Franklin to Jayawardene, no run, angled away from the left-hander. 135kph that time and Jayawardene, in this present mood, has nothing to do with it. Even while shouldering arms, there is a bit of style with Mahela

17.3

Franklin to Jayawardene, no run, short ball, quicker and well directed, Jayawardene goes for the pull but it beats him for pace and rattles the bat on the splice. Tamely trickles to the leg side

17.4

Franklin to Jayawardene, no run, full and wide, Jayawardene thinks about throwing his bat at it but backs away in the last moment. Taufel thinks about calling a wide but those arms don't signal anything

17.5

Franklin to Jayawardene, no run, pushed to the off side, straight to the cover fielder. Full and wide again and Jayawardene seems angry with himself for not putting it away

17.6

Franklin to Jayawardene, 1 run, slightly short, slightly wide, bat out, flash, down to third man for a single. The game seems to be entering a slightly lazy period. Time for some fizz

13 runs in five overs since Sangakkara was dismissed. Tuk, tuk, tuk

18.1

Oram to Jayawardene, 1 run, good length ball, angling into his pads and that's chipped away wide of mid-on for a single. In the air for a bit but drops well short

18.2

Oram to Tharanga, 1 run, turned away behind square leg for a single. Powerplay is on but not too many bnoundaries here. Well done NZ

18.3

Oram to Jayawardene, 2 runs, on the pads again and Jayawardene ticks it past square leg for a brace. Well placed, well run

18.4

Oram to Jayawardene, no run, that's a better length, good length on and outside off, Jayawardene pushes forward and gets it off the meat of the bat, straight to cover

18.5

Oram to Jayawardene, no run, similar delivery, similar result. Jayawardene's tactics matching well with the sleepy atmosphere at Sabina Park. This is the World Cup semi-final and nobody seems to have woken up yet

18.6

Oram to Jayawardene, no run, blocked to the off, one way of getting your eye in. Oram keeping it tight and New Zealand keeping the game in control

Time for spin. Daniel Vettori, the left-arm spinner, comes onto the attack and will bowl around the wicket to the left-hander

19.1

Vettori to Tharanga, no run, slightly quicker one to start with, tapped away to the off side

19.2

Vettori to Tharanga, no run, on middle, flighted a bit and Tharanga seems to be thinking of coming down the track but changes his mind and taps it to the off side

19.3

Vettori to Tharanga, no run, quicker outside off, Tharanga tries to glide but is beaten. That could have been dangerous

19.4

Vettori to Tharanga, no run, on the pads, Vettori bowling at close to 60mph, driven straight to the square fielder

Spin at both ends. Jeetan Patel the offspinner enters the attack and has a slip in place.

20.1

Patel to Tharanga, 1 run, Around the wicket to the left-hander, on and outside off and Tharanga pushes to the off side and completes the single that takes him to a solid fifty. This is his 8th half-century in ODIs and third fifty against New Zealand

20.2

20.6

Patel to Jayawardene, no run, Oh, thrown up, flight, arrived slowly and gripped and spun as well. Jayawardene gets his foot forward and tries to flick it to the on side but can't do so. He's one of the best players of spin but Patel and Vettori giving nothing away.

Vettori to Tharanga, no run, Oh Taylor! missed a gimme of a run-out there! Tharanga flicks it square and Taylor fumbles before letting rip a throw to the bowler. Jayawardene is halfway down the track but the misfield allows him to get back in time

21.2

Vettori to Tharanga, no run

21.3

Vettori to Tharanga, SIX, down the track, that was flighted outside off and he creams a most delicious lofted cover drive over extra cover for a most stylish six. Tharanga can hit them, he can time them, he can place them and does he do it with some class

21.4

Vettori to Tharanga, no run, faster ball outside off, Tharanga tries to glide it to third man but can't get bat to ball

21.5

Vettori to Tharanga, 2 runs, this time he manages the glide, that's racing away but Patel dives full length at third man anc cuts off a sure boundary

21.6

Vettori to Tharanga, FOUR, that's finer and cuter and more effective. It's a delectable glide and runs away for four. 12 off the over, the highest of the innings so far. Tharanga on the move

Vettori to Tharanga, no run, quicker ball, on off and tapped to the on side. Tharanga again seems to be thinking of coming down the track but adjusts in the last moment

23.2

Vettori to Tharanga, no run, bit of drift, bit of flight, ball not spinning that much and holding its line. Tharanga tries the elegant back cut but is beaten.

23.3

Vettori to Tharanga, 2 runs, that's the elegance, back-cut comes out this time after Vettori fires it a bit wide. Batsmen complete two behind square

23.4

Vettori to Tharanga, 2 runs, New Zealand getting a bit sloppy on the field, Tharanga taps it to point and takes off for a quick single, the fielder tries the direct hit and Styris (backing up) makes a hash of it and allows two more. Styris seems to have some injury on his finger (lot of bandaging there)

23.5

Vettori to Tharanga, 1 run, another single, Sri Lanka doing it well now, after a lengthy lull

23.6

Vettori to Jayawardene, no run, huge appeal, that drifted into the right-hander beautifully and Jayawardene couldn't get his bat onto it as he went for the forward defensive. Big appeal but Taufel says "No". Maybe he was too far forward. Just maybe

Patel to Tharanga, no run, around the wicket, fast one and Tharanga pushes to the off side

24.2

Patel to Tharanga, no run, flight and loop, quite a peach of an offspinner and Tharanga is a bit unsure with his footwork and beaten comprehensively by one that turns away

24.3

Patel to Tharanga, no run, gets his front foot forward and pushes to the off, straight to the cover fielder

24.4

Patel to Tharanga, no run, defended confidently, good bowling from Patel. Unlike, Vettori he seems to have found his rhythm

24.5

Patel to Tharanga, no run, well-timed drive to the covers and yet another fumble but they decide against the single. New Zealand fumbling all over the place here, butterflies in their stomachs?

24.6

Patel to Tharanga, 1 run, Patel throws it up, that went up a few miles before coming down, Tharanga had so much time that he seemed to be confused about what to do with it. It came down after an age and he tamely pushed to extra cover for a single

Vettori to Tharanga, OUT, Around his legs! Cleaned him up. Vettori fires it quick and flat and on middle and leg. Tharanga chooses the wrong shot, trying to sweep past short fine, and goes way across his stumps, exposing the middle and leg. The ball is too quick for him and goes around his pads to rattle middle. Huge wicket, Dan the Man strikes

Patel to Silva, 1 run, this time he pulls out the sweep, sees the full ball on off and times it well to pouch a single behind square

26.6

Patel to Jayawardene, 1 run, faster one this time, turned away for a single behind square

The pitch has been a good, sporty one so far. There was bounce and movement for the faster men early on and now the spinners are extracting just a bit of turn. A certain Mr Murali might get interested later on in the day

Bond to Dilshan, no run, cut away to point and they go for a quick single, Oram picks it up above hs head but again, yet again, a New Zealand fielder can't get a direct hit. Almost another overthrow. They've not been at their accurate best today. WIll it cost them?

41.5

Bond to Dilshan, 1 run, tapped away to the off side, the length has been on the shorter side and the batsmen finding the gaps square of the wicket

41.6

Bond to Jayawardene, 1 run, full this time and driven down the ground for an easy single

End of over 42 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 199/4 (RR: 4.73)
DPMD Jayawardene    55* (82b 3x4)      SE Bond    8-1-35-1
TM Dilshan    19* (19b 2x4)      JS Patel    8-0-40-0

42.1

Patel to Jayawardene, FOUR, crackling loft, tossed up and Jayawardene stands tall and flicks it exquisitely in the midwicket gap for a four. He moved well across the stumps and nailed the gap. Not timed as well as he would have liked but the placement was crucial

42.2

Patel to Jayawardene, no run, quicker, faster, batsman doesn't take any risks and pushes it back to the bowler

42.3

Patel to Jayawardene, 1 run, driven to long-on for an easy single

42.4

Patel to Dilshan, 1 run, full again and driven for another single. Boundary done and the batsmen concentrating on the singles. Sensible

42.5

Patel to Jayawardene, 1 leg bye, sweeps from middle and raps him on the pads, huge appeal for lbw but Rudi Koertzen turns it down. Close but that might have missed leg. Some turn for Patel and he's varying his pace well

42.6

Patel to Dilshan, 2 runs, cut away savagely, that was a tad too short. The ball races away towards the third man fence but James Franklin cuts it off and keeps them down to a couple. Their ground fielding has been OK but it's been the inability to crack the direct hits that may cost them

End of over 43 (9 runs) Sri Lanka 208/4 (RR: 4.83)
TM Dilshan    22* (21b 2x4)      JS Patel    9-0-48-0

43.1

Oram to Jayawardene, 1 run, short of a length, glided away to third man for a single

43.2

Oram to Dilshan, 1 run, Dilshan backs away and whacks it to the off side for another single. He has this baseball technique that can unnerve bowlers

43.3

Oram to Jayawardene, 1 run, full and Jayawardene does what he's done so well throughout this innings, drives it solidly down the ground

43.4

Oram to Dilshan, 1 run, good length and slightly wide, cut away to point where Fleming misfields and allows a single. The wheels seem to be coming off now

43.5

Oram to Jayawardene, SIX, Take that! Shot of the day so far. Full and Jayawardene stands and delivers a most emphatic loft, super timing, pendulum-smooth swing of the bat and no fielder can get close to that. Soars over the boundary for a mighty six

43.6

Oram to Jayawardene, 1 run, cut away but straight to the square fielder

End of over 44 (11 runs) Sri Lanka 219/4 (RR: 4.97)
DPMD Jayawardene    69* (90b 4x4 1x6)      JDP Oram    8-0-41-0

Umpires checking the ball out, maybe a change is on the cards. Meanwhile the Sri Lankan supporters have begun their parties.

44.1

Patel to Jayawardene, 1 run, pushed to mid-on for a single, Patel's last over this

44.2

Patel to Dilshan, 1 run, tapped to cover and Hamish Marshall goes for the direct hit. Had he hit Dilshan would have been running all the way back to the pavilion but no New Zealander has managed the direct hit today and Marshall joins the list

44.3

Patel to Jayawardene, SIX, dropped, full toss, Jayawardene whips it across the line and Shane Bond, standing a few yards in front of the tops at third man, not only muffs the catch but also taps it over the ropes for a six. That's what's called being paid for ones mistakes, and so quickly

44.4

Patel to Jayawardene, 1 run, worked away for a single, he has done this so well all day - four followed by single

44.5

Patel to Dilshan, FOUR, that's deft, very deft. Full and on off, Dilshan angles his bat beautifully and gets it past short third man for another four. Pump up the volume!

44.6

Patel to Dilshan, 1 run, pushed down the ground to long-off for a single, yet another ocassion when a four is followed by a single. Best policy that - the aussies seem to do it always.

End of over 45 (14 runs) Sri Lanka 233/4 (RR: 5.17)
TM Dilshan    30* (26b 3x4)      JS Patel    10-0-62-0
DPMD Jayawardene    77* (93b 4x4 2x6)      JDP Oram    8-0-41-0

45.1

Oram to Dilshan, OUT, yet another unlucky decision, this time from Taufel. Full and drifting down the legs, Dilshan tries to paddle it past short fine but can't make contact. The ball strikes his back leg and is swinging away all the time. It might have gone on to clatter into the fifth stump (on the leg side) but Taufel raises his finger. Not again, Dilshan seems to be saying.

Arnold enters

45.2

Oram to Arnold, 1 run, worked away to the leg side for a single, short of a good length and flicked away

45.3

Oram to Jayawardene, FOUR, awww! that would have got the purists purring, full and over-pitching, Mahela pushes forward and creams it wonderfully past cover for a boundary. Sweet as candy, he can strike them with class

45.4

Oram to Jayawardene, 1 run, angled away to third man for an easy single. Remember the strategy? Four first, single later

45.5

Oram to Arnold, no run, full ball, driven back to the bowler, Oram uses his reach and stops it well

45.6

Oram to Arnold, 1 no ball, slower ball but he over-steps, outside off and Arnold can't make contact while going for the cut.

45.6

Oram to Arnold, no run, short of a length, straight ball, Arnold tries to deflect it towards point but it's straight to the cover fielder

End of over 46 (7 runs) Sri Lanka 240/5 (RR: 5.21)
RP Arnold    1* (4b)      JDP Oram    9-0-48-1

James Franklin into the attack now. Around the wicket to the right-hander

46.1

Franklin to Jayawardene, 1 run, short of a length, outside off, allows Jayawardene the chance to free his arms and slash it square of the wicket, sweeper mops up as they complete an easy single

46.2

Franklin to Arnold, 1 run, slower ball, full on off, driven through cover for a single

46.3

Franklin to Jayawardene, 1 run, full and outside off, McCullum is standing upto the stumps now, driven crisply through covers but Patel cleans up well. Keeps them to a single

46.4

Franklin to Arnold, 2 wides, speared down leg side, wide called. Good take by McCullum, though, standing up.

46.4

Franklin to Jayawardene, FOUR, tries for the full ball but it's just a good length ball wide of off, Jayawardene backs away and flashes and most effective flash. It's another four as the ball races away behind square

46.5

Franklin to Jayawardene, no run, full toss and that was surely above waist. Not called no-ball, though. Some sloppy umpiring going on. McCullum taken by surprise while standing up but handles it well.

46.6

Franklin to Jayawardene, FOUR, timing, glorious. Used the pace of the bowler smartly. Outside off again and Mahela back-cuts it quite gorgeously for a four square of third man. This is an outstanding shot. Class showing here, and he has oodles of it

End of over 47 (13 runs) Sri Lanka 253/5 (RR: 5.38)
DPMD Jayawardene    92* (100b 7x4 2x6)      JEC Franklin    9-1-46-2

47.1

Bond to Arnold, 1 run, full and outside off, dug out and a single to off

47.2

Bond to Jayawardene, 1 run, tapped away past cover for another single

47.3

Bond to Arnold, FOUR, full and too straight, fine leg up and all Arnold has to do is turn those wrists and beat the fielder. Bond coming apart at the slog, Sri Lanka surging.

47.4

Bond to Arnold, no run, slower ball, full and wide, Arnold tries to glide it towards third man but misses. The ball reaches the keeper on the first bounce.

47.5

Bond to Arnold, no run, slightly slower ball again, Arnold seems to have decided to pat it to the off side but can't adjust to the line in the last minute, pushes it back to the bowler

47.6

Bond to Arnold, 1 run, full again outside off, driven to long-off for a single

End of over 48 (7 runs) Sri Lanka 260/5 (RR: 5.41)

Oram around the wicket to the left-hander

48.1

Oram to Arnold, no run, Arnold trying to be a bit too cute here, short ball outside off and he tries to glide it to third man, can't get to the ball

48.2

Oram to Arnold, 1 run, full and on middle stump, Arnold digs it out and pushes it to long-on, Taylor cleans up well and restricts them to a single

48.3

Oram to Jayawardene, FOUR, another cute shot and Mahela hurting them with silk here. Full on off and Mahela sweeps it past short fine leg for a delectable four.

48.4

Oram to Jayawardene, 2 runs, short ball and he pulls, top edge balloons over short fine for another brace. He moves on to 99. What an innings

48.5

Oram to Jayawardene, FOUR, Crack! What a way to bring it up, wide and slightly short and he cuts it smoothly past point, bisecting the fielders on the boundary. He knows that's going for four and pumps his fists and jumps up in delight. This innings has been worth its weight in gold.

48.6

Oram to Jayawardene, 1 run, driven to long-off for a single and keeps the strike. Another four followed by another single. Sensible, very sensible

End of over 49 (12 runs) Sri Lanka 272/5 (RR: 5.55)
DPMD Jayawardene    104* (105b 9x4 2x6)      JDP Oram    10-0-60-1
RP Arnold    9* (12b 1x4)      SE Bond    9-1-42-1

49.1

Bond to Jayawardene, FOUR, too wide, too short and all Jayawardene needs to do is back away and flash, flash flash. Races away to the square boundary for yet another four.

Jaywardene is the second Sri Lankan captain to make a hundred in World Cups. Jayasuriya was the first against New Zealand in 2003

49.2

Bond to Jayawardene, 1 wide, Jaywardene moves across the stumps, Bond follows him but over-compensates. Wide called

49.2

Bond to Jayawardene, SIX, Too easy for him now. That was a zingler. Full toss, waist high and Jayawardene blitzes it with another smooth swing, just clears the midwicket ropes and Patel can't get around to it. Taufel indicates six after checking with the third umpire

49.3

Bond to Jayawardene, no run, wide of the stumps here, short ball and Jayawardene can't get onto it for the pull this time.

49.4

Bond to Jayawardene, 1 run, chipped to long-on and it drops short of Taylor. They complete a single

49.5

Bond to Arnold, FOUR, it's raining fours now, Arnold flicks it past short fine leg, can't bowl length at this time and what on earth is fine leg doing in the circle? Four all the way

49.6

Bond to Arnold, 1 run, low full toss, chipped away to extra cover for a single. That's the end of the innings and they end on an imposing 289

So that's been a fine performance from Sri Lanka, after choosing to bat at Sabina Park. Mahela Jayawardene's knock, a lesson in pacing the innings, will go down as one of the great one-day innings and was a sort of effort that one associated with Aravinda de Silva. New Zealand started off well with the ball but some sloppy fielding and poor death bowling (when they conceded 102 in the last ten) did them in. Even someone like Shane Bond, who has had a fine tournament so far, leaked 59 in his ten overs.

Please join is for New Zealand's reply in what promises to be a cracker of a finish. New Zealand's most successful run-chase in World Cups is 253 (against Zimbabwe at Bloemfontein in the 2003 edition) and they will need to better that if they want to enter their first final.

Andrew Miller has some news from Sabina Park: "The Vibes, the World Cup volunteers, are parading round the outfield, waving their goodbyes. Brings a tear to the eye."
