Afghanistan 95 for 2 (Mangal 52*, Shahzad 33) beat Kenya 89 (Ouma 24, Hassan 4-19) by 8 wickets
Scorecard

Afghanistan did one half of their job in their pursuit of a 2015 World Cup berth as they beat Kenya by eight wickets in Sharjah, thanks largely to Hamid Hassans' 4 for 19, and Nawroz Mangal's unbeaten 52.

Kenya won the toss and elected to bat first, a decision they would come to rue. In the first over, Hassan removed Irfan Karim, followed soon by Obanda's wicket in the 4th over.

Kenya lost wickets like they were going out of style as some tight bowling from Hassan and Shapoor Zadran kept them in check. In fact, only three batsmen were able to pass double figures, with Maurice Ouma top-scoring with a doughty 24 off 48 balls. Hiren Varaiya's wicket in the 38th over signaled the end of Kenya's innings, where they finished on 89.

Afghanistan's reply, in contrast, was calm and considered as they cantered to 79 without any wicket. Mohammad Shahzad holed out to Dhiren Gondaria of the bowling off Varaiya in the 16th over, followed by Hashmutallah Shadi being removed for a three-ball duck. But by then, Afghanistan had done enough, as they were able to knock off the remaining 9 runs to seal an emphatic eight-wicket win, with 32.1 overs to spare.

"I seriously enjoyed bowling today, 10 overs, 18 runs, four wickets - just missed the five wickets, but that's alright," Hassan said after the game. "We got the win and hopefully on Friday we'll do the same," he said.

If Afghanistan win their next match against Kenya on October 4, then they guarantee themselves a spot in the 2015 World Cup. If not, they will then have to travel to New Zealand for another chance at qualification.

"If we win on Friday, the whole nation will be celebrating," Afghanistan captain Mohammad Nabi said. "We will now try even harder for our next game to play positively."

Agree with deeblaque, there's still a big gap between Zim, Ban and the associates, although arguably Ireland and Afghanistan are better now than Bangladesh were when they got promoted to Test Cricket

Afghanistan have the ability to upset any full member nation. The ICC should push to schedule a series between Zimbabwe and Afghanistan, or even add Bangladesh for a tri-series.

Afghanistan after they qualify should play against test teams and improve their competitiveness. Pakistan, Sri-Lanka, West Indies, South Africa should help them prepare for WC. I hope they do very well on the World stage. They have a chance to defeat one major team. They are an exciting team.

Great win, with a great style, and for sure Afghanistan deserve to win like this and deserve to plan with full members, thanks Hamid and Thanks Mangal, and hope we will win the next match too, and In Sha Allah we will win it.

That's what I excpected. Afghanistan should be given a chance to play with full members in international cricket. They have natural talent to kick the test nations off.

That is a real thrashing from Afghans its sad to see a team that made semis of 2003 WC lose like this but happy to see afghanistan play so well so i hope to see afganistan gain a permanent ODI ranking soon....

Are we going to make history??? Yes in sha Allah so along with Pakistan, India, Srilanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan will be 5th Asian team or even Nepal or UAE may qualify. I wonder whether it will be World Cup or Asia Cup but ACC has never done anything in favour of Afghanistan like giving them opportunity to play in Asia cup. We truly deserve it and everybody knows it

  • POSTED BY Cpt.Meanster on | October 2, 2013, 17:43 GMT

Good luck to Afghanistan. A truly talented team. Best wishes from an Indian supporter <3 <3.

ICC need to look into upgrading Afghanistan from an Affiliate to Associate member as soon as possible, they are by some margin the best Affiliate team and significantly ahead of some Associates like Kenya as proved today. They are on a par with Ireland and Netherlands as the to Associates and obviously deserve the additional funding to go with Associate membership.

  • POSTED BY on | October 2, 2013, 16:45 GMT

Afghanistan has played so positively in the past couple of years with great passion and enthusiasm in all departments of cricket, We, the Afghan National cricket really and truly deserve full attention and support from the ICC and ACC. ICC shall help Afghanistan cricket to arrange T20 and One day matches against the Full fledged cricket nations to fully prepared for 2015 world cup.

Please ICC help in developing cricket in this war torn country. We do have the ability to play class cricket, just need support and Help from you guys. and we hope that soon a new country will be added to list of top ten test nations.

  • POSTED BY on | October 2, 2013, 15:47 GMT

My suggestion and advice for Afghan Cricket team players is to play wisely and carefully, but not so carefully to be under-pressure and my serious advise and suggestion for them is NOT to try 6s instead they should focus on 4s, because according to me, the best batsman is that makes more 4s than 6s. Today they played very well and hopefully to go ahead with cricket wisdom since cricket is a game of wisdom and intelligent rather than physical aspects.

  • POSTED BY on | October 2, 2013, 15:46 GMT

Wow. All credit to Afghanistan, you have been the most spectacular of all the Associates over the last couple of years. Hopefully you have the same impact at the WC that Kenya did so many years ago.. oh the good old days.

Meanwhile, how low can Kenyan cricket sink? This was basically the full strength squad. We might as well as disband the national team now before they embarrass the country any further. Absolutely pathetic.

  • POSTED BY on | October 2, 2013, 15:33 GMT

Now not only Kenya but any batsmen will suffer against the seam and pace of Hamid Hassan and Shahpoor. Absaloutly brilliant!!! we are coming Australia and will sing our anthem there. Remember if we qualify, we will play Oz in thier first match.

  • POSTED BY on | October 2, 2013, 15:22 GMT

winning of next game by Afghans will make history which will be the first time ever in Afghanistan's history to qualify for World Cup in any events excluding T20I , Ya Allah give success and Peace to Afghanistan and Afghan anymore.
