Nepal pip USA to WC Qualifiers

Nepal have leapfrogged USA to earn a place in the World Cup Qualifiers after a dramatic day at the World Cricket League Division 3 tournament in Bermuda.

It was a plausible, but unlikely, scenario at the start of the day with Nepal needing to thrash Italy then hope that Bermuda overcame USA. In the end, that is exactly what happened.

Nepal raced to victory with a massive 211 deliveries to spare which gave their net run-rate the surge required to keep their hopes alive. Tight bowling had restricted Italy to 127 for 9 and then Nepal's openers - Subash Khakurel and Pradeep Airee - added 87 in 12 overs to speed them on their way before captain Paras Khadka provided the finishing touches with 22 off eight deliveries.

Still, however, Nepal needed a favour from Bermuda who, by now, had no chance of progressing. Ultimately, Bermuda cruised home with more than five overs to spare, but it will have been an agonising few hours for Nepal. The hosts impressively knocked off 221 led by Chris Douglas, who made 89 off 75 balls.

Nepal will now join Uganda, who had already qualified top of the group, at next year's World Cup Qualifiers to compete for a chance to play at the main event in Australia and New Zealand in early 2015.

Speaking after the match, Khadka said it was hard work more than luck helped his side into the World Cup Qualifiers. "Pressure is always there, after having lost both our first two games. We had to step it up," he said. "Hats off to the boys for having played so well and for their determination. We had to wait for the results of the other matches, and then it happened for us. They say that when you work hard, things and luck work for you. That's what we believe in and it worked for us."

The action is not done yet in Division 3 though, with Nepal facing Uganda in the final on Sunday. Khadka said his side would put the negatives results of the past week out of their minds when they play that game: "We'll think positive and forget what happened. It was good that we were playing as a team today. The momentum is back and we just need to continue the momentum. Like I've said before, if we play to our potential, the results will be pretty good."

Nepal's rapid improvement in the late stage of the crucial matches shows how much lack of practice matches in order to acclimatize in Bermudan condition and atmosphere costed them. It would be wrong to assume that we were inconsistent, rather it was the lack of time to adjust.

Nepal has metamorphosed itself into formidable force to be reckon with under duo of Pubudoo and Paras. We have matured (as Dias succinctly put across) and hungry for achievements. We have now big match mentality to click when it is most needed. Bravo Nepalese team, see u in world cup soon!

Hard on USA, but Nepal deserved it, I guess. The margin of victory over sides like Bermuda and Italy suggests that. The consistency was lacking in the first two games, but we showed alot of dominance on the remaining games to achieve that massive net run rate after being comprehensively defeated in the first two games. Hope to see Nepal in the world cup soon!

The hope of their National Team getting a chance to prove their worth in the biggest arena of the World Cricket is overwhelming for us!! Though it was a lucky escape for us, we did prove ourselves by winning all the games except the first two. JAI NEPAL!!

Back in the late 90s, I thought Nepal would be the next Test nation. The juniors were so strong (every kid seemed to play the game), but they serially under produced when it matered. I thought they were at it again when Uganda beat them in the first round, but they have come back very well. I am very happy for Nepal. == == == Actually even more stoked about Uganda coming thru. They have been steady improvers for a while. I wonder how much that link with Kenya has helped?

NOW let us face it .....In the world cup qualifiers in 2014, Nepal will have to face 10 strong countries. Assuming Ireland and Netherland as 2 top teams in the Div 1 table, we will be competing with the likes of countries like Afganistan, Scotland, Kenya, Canada, UAE, Namibia, PNG, Hong kong, Uganda and NEPAL. Only 1st and 2nd will go on to the 2015 world cup....3rd and 4th will recieve one day status. Let us not get our hopes too high-recieving the one day status even will be regarded as a great feat!!

Champaka Ramanayake (Current SL bowling coach) also was the previous Nepalese Cricket coach. Now Nepal are in the 2nd Division of cricket, Im sure Nepal will be a powerhouse of the Sub Continent in the future because of the Enthusiastic and Cricket loving fans.

CAN should initiate new plans and policies to really see our team playing world cup

Uganda's successful in Bermuda are testament to the coaching skills of former Kenya cricketers Martin Suji and Steve Tikolo, as well as to the drive of the East Africa Premier League/East African Cup (EAPL/EAC), which has brought players up to speed - not to overlook the well constructed Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) domestic leagues in both T20 and 50/50 formats. It is interesting that of the 14 Ugandan players who travelled to Bermuda, seven were from 'Knights' and seven from 'Warriors', the two Uganda EAPL/EAC franchises; and that the coaches, Suji and Tikolo, though both Kenyans, are likewise each respectively associated with 'Knights' and 'Warriors'. The EAPL/EAC was originally proposed in 2010 as a means of improving the East Africans' long game - there are also four Kenyan franchises - but it appears to have served its purpose equally well in the 50/50 and T20 formats.

if only tournaments like ipl would ask every club to keep at least 2 players in squad from associate countries ,then those players would learn cricket from legends there and would help cricket grow in their respective countries. but the way associate countries get chance to have experience of international cricket is so pity... how can you expect us to grow... we haven't faced those super deliveries , we dont know those batting techniques, and they expect us to compete in international level. if only these big clubs in ipl would send their staffs to watch and monitor players in these divisions and select few in upcoming tournaments... then the best investment would be paras khadka, khakurel and few guyz with their great hard hitting capabilities while paras like player can bowl as well... cmon icc do something for these die hard cricket lovers.... make cricket universal.... specially this guy PARAS KHADKA is awfully playing awesome get him in any ipl teams or county teams in abroad...

An even bigger congratulations to the Nepalese fan base, the support you guys show for your team on here is incredible and you can rightly be proud of your team and their achievements in Bermuda!

Hard luck for USA, after the first few matches they looked like a team that had every thing in place to advance but I guess in the end their key batsmen just weren't quite consistent enough. I feel pretty sorry for these guys but they have two good young cricketers in Taylor and Allen and I think we'll see them progress further soon.

Winning a game is always a big part of the match, but winning with the dedication, love of country, support from thousands of fans is the effort from the Nepal National Team.

We have thought of playing world cup through our dream, and while that dream has fallen at our feet with real pleasant surpriseā€¦ what would we do? Nevertheless our cricket team had done it, made it. Yes, we are through the finals of Division 3 and the most happiest thing is we qualified for World cup qualifiers.

Our players mad a great comeback against Italy with superb bowling and batting. Introduction of Rahul and Pradeep made the team perfect anyway. Fielding first, Italy were more pressurized of Nepalese bowlers and leads to a low total of127/9 in 50 overs.T-20 opening pair Subash Khakurel and Pradeep Airee leave no hospitality in serving Italians bowlers. They made a good start to the game, after Khakurel got out at 47 runs it was Khadka's responsibility to finish off the innings and done great hitting Sixe

Congratulations team Nepal!!! Fortune favours the brave, that's exactly what happened. USA played well only a inning against Nepal, thanks to small cricket ground and hard hit of baseball player Taylor. In every other match they were struggling against the opponents. In contrast, Nepal after being unable to play only scheduled practice match against hosts were unaware of the conditions and not able to acclimatize to conditions. With time spent there they gained the momentum and hopefully they will thrash Uganda too to prove that they are country deserving ODI status.

Lets give the credit where it is due. Nepal played last three games completely out of their skin. To restrict a team to little over 100 in 50 overs was awesome, I guess it was deliberate strategy to not take wickets to increase run rate by smashing the target in as less overs as possible. Good plan, brilliant execution. Though grateful that Bermuda won, lets not say they did favour to Nepal, they had to win to stay in div3.

However earned, this is a well deserved qualifier spot for Nepal since Nepal defeated USA twice in the division 4 championship. Its good to see the batsmen backing up the solid bowling performances. I hope that Nepal would go ahead and prove that their qualification wasn't a mere gift from the hosts Bermuda by defeating Uganda in the final. This qualification was long time due for Nepal based on their solid performances in last couple of years and considering the fact the fan following here in Nepal is supremely overwhelming. I am a kiwi cricket team fan among the test playing nation, so I hope that Nepal does well in New Zealand. Jai Nepal.

Hope CAN will make every efforts to ensure the greatest opportunity for our team to practice before they appear in Div 2 matches.

What to expect, these guys just arent that good. I watched afghanistan last wc & they played well being minnows. Most of these guys are 5th rate players from their home countries. There is a lot of talent in america but the money to be made from cricket is nothing so who would even play it if theyve never heard of it? Living in america, it is hard to even watch highlights on youtube on official ipl channel. No exposure, nothing has been done to improve it. Either blocked in america or have to pay to view. They even show clips of each 4 & 6 so there are 1000s of videos on youtube that are mostly spam. I think ICC should work something with espn to show IPL or CLT20 matches here on tv & to be made available on net for free. If they can block viewers from US to watch why not do the reverse, only let US & Canada be able to watch. Increase knowledge of the game & buy air time. Even host a game here, they are missing out on big cash cow called american consumer!!!

Oh God what a day for Nepali cricket. As said 'Luck only favors the Braves', it certainly favored the brave Nepali cricket team. We still have a long way to go to play in the World cup, but a chance is certainly there. I am so glad Nepal surpassed USA in the league, because I always believed cricket will be only promoted if the nationalities of a corresponding country play cricket. Teams like USA, Italy, Hongkong all have players from India, Pakistan or elsewhere, that will never make cricket a popular sport in those countries. ICC should focus and spend on teams like Ireland, Netherlands, Nepal, Afghanistan, Scotland etc where the players playing cricket belong to those countries. The future of cricket in depends on how ICC manages to promote it in those countries, rather than countries like USA, where cricket will be popular only among the south Asians residing there. I hope to see Nepal playing good cricket in the qualifiers. Good luck Team Nepal.

WHAT!!! Nepal qualified!! Their chances for qualification seemed so implausible but I guess miracles do happen. Nepal didn't perform well against USA and Uganda. I think Nepal is better than USA overall (I don't know much about Uganda) but USA played much better on that opening day. There's no room for mistakes and missed opportunities but Nepal got a big break here. I hope they learn from this and make sure they don't end up in such a close situation again.

Nepal, USA and Bermuda have all won 3 matches and have equal 6 points but Nepal betters USA and Bermuda on the Net Run Rate thus goes into the Final of DIVISION III, the Division II and the 2015 WC Qualification Tournament to be held on New Zealand Next Year

Absolutely brilliant for Nepal. As a Nepali, I am so proud of the team. I may be biased but Nepal deserved to go through more than USA. Cricket means nothing to a VAST majority of the American people. But for Nepali people, it is massive. Matches played in Nepal are in front of sell out crowds, USA could never generate that much interest. Thank you Bermuda and see you in New Zealand !!
