World Cup - 2003

Washouts, walkovers, and black- armband protests

An overlong tournament but one that saw the two best sides contest the finals, where Australia, in an encore of 1999, overwhelmed their opponents (India this time) for their second title in a row. The event was not short of incident - including Henry Olonga and Andy Flower's protest against the Mugabe regime, Shane Warne's 11th-hour drugs ban, South Africa's ejection after they misread the rain-rule figures, and Adam Gilchrist's much-talked-about walking after nicking one in the semi-final against Sri Lanka...

Who holds the record for most boundaries in an innings in the tournament?

a. Sachin Tendulkar b. Stephen Fleming c. Herschelle Gibbs

Tendulkar turns it on Sachin Tendulkar has never batted better than in the World Cup of 2003, and during it never better than for three famous deliveries against Shoaib Akhtar in Centurion. The first, reaching out, at once cutting and tipping, very high over the square third-man boundary, the second, back in the crease and with swirling wrists diverting a reasonable delivery to square leg, but the third was the best:a little trot across to off stump, block, down the ground to the on, four. No back-lift, no follow-through - none needed.
