Right. We are about to start the West Indies Test season of 2012. Brathwaite and Barath to open the innings. Barath takes first strike, and Ryan Harris has the new ball in hand. Three slips, a gully and a short leg in place
9.55am Now about the playing surface. Geoff Lawson sees no green grass on the wicket. "Typical Kensington Oval pitch." He expects good bounce, but not much seam movement. New ball should move a bit, but overall good for batsmen. Hard bouncy wicket, which should help stroke-play. And, sun is shining. Sammy says, "The selectors went in, and they left out Ravi Rampaul." Why does he - I know Sammy gets a lot of stick, some of it unfair - always say "the selectors made such and such decision"? I am talking of picking the XIs, not the 15-men squads.
Michael Clarke says he would have batted too. Before we start, I hope the Aussies are with us too. Having spent three months there over the summer, I know most of them will be following this, even if on TV and not on Cricinfo. It must be getting close to midnight there
9.50am For Australia, Matthew Wade makes Test debut. He was given the cap by Ricky Ponting. Shane Watson is back, and will take Shaun Marsh's place. Australia will want Warner, Watson and Cowan as their top three for the Ashes. Harris's performance in the tour game seems to have given him the edge over Pattinson.
Elvin Zammit weighs in, "Good thing Australia chose harris, he has more experience, good average and pattinson has just returned from injury. Harris has had a great sheffield shield too". Tom Connolly
"@Sidharth- IPL previews and now you doing commentary in this Test match. I wanted to know do commentators/Cricket writers feel as difficult as players in taking their form from T20 cricket to Test cricket? :)" Mazher Arshad, it's a welcome change moving from Twenty20 to Tests. I know many a commentator, though, who don't mind Twenty20 because it's all over in three hours. Or it should get over in about that much time but for "strategic" timeouts and other cheerleading activites
9.40am So first home Test for Kirk Edwards. Narsinh Deonarine is back. Sunil Narine is in India, but who's to say he would have been picked in the squad and then picked ahead of Bishoo had he chosen to stay on or if West Indies would have played two specialist spinners? It's the third Narine that might matter the most: Shiv. Remember his stubbornness the last time Australia toured the West Indies for Tests? That contest when he was hit on the head and came down like a sack of potatoes is particularly etched in the memory. Mrs Chanderpaul was in the crowd too. He got up, and kept on batting. He will keep on batting. That's one thing he knows better than anything else
Toss West Indies have won and will have a bat first. No Ravi Rampaul. Australia have left out James Pattinson
9.10am "Sun is shining, the weather is sweet..." Well, the sun is not quite shining, it is expected to be an overcast morning in Barbados, but it is the start of a Test match in the West Indies, and "Sun Is Shining" is never far away from the mind at such times. To the rescue...
The toss is in 20 minutes, and West Indies have decisions to make. The main being, do they play five bowlers including Sammy or four including Sammy? Australia have to pick between Ryan Harris and James Pattinson

Harris to Barath,
no run,
lovely outswinger first up, angles in, pitches around off, short of a length, then moves away. If anything, it moves away too much, and Barath has no trouble pushing inside the line of it
|
0.2 |
Harris to Barath,
no run,
filler and closer to the stumps this time, Barath stretches forward and defends
|
0.3 |
Harris to Barath,
no run,
short of a length, just outside off, 138.2kph. Extracts good bounce, and Wade collects it chest high. His second touch on the ball in Test cricket
|
0.4 |
Harris to Barath,
no run,
full outswinger, but starts well wide, and is left alone

"West Indies won 12 consecutive Tests at this venue (Kensington Oval, Bridgetown) during their heydays between 1978 and 1993. But since year 2000, they have won only two out of 12 Tests played here - both wins coming against subcontinent teams; vs Pakistan in 2005 and vs India in 2002." Mazher puts the obvious in numbers. Sounds scary, doesn't it? Here is Hilfenhaus. He will swing the ball. The wind is blowing from leg to off for him
|
1.1 |
Hilfenhaus to Brathwaite,
no run,
lovely start. Almost the magic ball. Starts leg, swings away, heads towards off. KB is squared up as he defends
|
1.2 |
Hilfenhaus to Brathwaite,
no run,
another outswinger that starts in front of stumps. KB moves across to cover the swing, and defends
|
1.3 |

Against the IPL batsmen it worked as they felt the need to get bat on ball and would fend at his wide deliveries. But against patient batsmen he can look unthreatening, as England showed the previous summer." Chris, I - and others - may or may not agree with you, but I find the use of "IPL batsmen" for the team that toured Australia this summer amusing

"Chris is spot on! In fact this AUS attack, in its entirety, is at best consistent. Can it blast patient batsmen out? I doubt it. There is no fizz at all in these bowlers' strides. All of this makes the dropping of sensational Pattinson even more baffling." Ntokozo is clearly not impressed with the exclusion of Pattinson, but hang on. Who would have thought of an offspinner bowling in the first hour of a Barbados Test? What would Clive Lloyd think?

Siddle to Brathwaite,
FOUR,
he has threaded the gullies, and hasn't done it intentionally. This is just a loose shot to a short ball outside off, and the ball flies between the two gullies. Hands on head all around
|
16.3 |
Siddle to Brathwaite,
no run,
half-volley outside off, driven to mid-off, along the ground
|
16.4 |
Siddle to Brathwaite,
no run,
bouncer, well outside off, no problem leaving it well alone
|
16.5 |
Siddle to Brathwaite,
no run,
wide half-volley again, Brathwaite drives again, but doesn't open the face, and ends up playing it straight to mid-off
|

Enough of spin. Harris comes back. Two slips, a gully, a short cover for Barath
|
17.1 |
Harris to Barath,
no run,
nicely driven on the up as Harris pitches on a length just outside off, Fielded by short cover
|
17.2 |
Harris to Barath,
no run,
short of a length, outside off, 135ks, extra bounce involved, but left alone
|
Round the wicket goes Harris, with a short leg and man on the hook
|
17.3 |
Harris to Barath,
OUT,
and it works immediately. Barath should have known better. This was a plan posted on Twitter. Harris goes round the stumps, has a man on on the hook and at short leg. The bouncer was expected. Barath should have known that. He hooks this from well outside off, gets the top edge, and is caught simply and gleefully at deep backward square. All the hard work of 75 minutes wasted. Full points to Harris, though, for trying to change things up a bit

Silly mid-on for Hilfy too. But no second slip
|
20.2 |

FOUR,
variable bounce. This one stays low, and he follows it. The outside edge takes it along the ground and wide of first slip

|
23.2 |

no run,

|
25.4 |
Siddle to KA Edwards,
no run,
wide half-volley again, but for no particular reason Edwards fives in and goes after it. The late swing beats the bat
|
25.5 |

|
Noon That's lunch then. Brathwaite has played a nice round figure of 15 overs for 24 runs. Has shown a lot of patience to make sure West Indies go into lunch just one wicket down. Australia have been made to work hard, and they have tried many different things: spin, round-the-stumps angle, catching men in front of wicket. Barath did all the hard work, and walked right into the fairly obvious round-the-stumps trap, top-edging a hook. Otherwise, though, a pretty satisfying session for West Indies, and while Australia haven't had the joy of wickets, they will be satisfied they haven't allowed too many runs. A tough first session of Test cricket then. Join us in about 35 minutes, and it will be Alex Winter bringing you the first half of the next session

Cheers Alex. A move-on from Edwards. Impressive use of feet against Lyon. He does give it a thump when he gets close to the pitch of the ball. And Brathwaite remains patient and keeps on concentrating. A Shiv Chanderpaul sans the crazy manic spells of hitting that result in 69-ball centuries. Australia, meanwhile, are being made to work harder for wickets than India made them all summer. The pitch, of course, is different. Lyon continues to Edwards. back over the stumps now
|
44.1 |
Lyon to KA Edwards,
no run,
tosses it up wide, draws him forward, gets the inside edge, but it falls safe towards midwicket
|
44.2 |
Lyon to KA Edwards,
no run,
stretches further forward to reach the pitch of the ball as he defends
|
44.3 |
Lyon to KA Edwards,

another flighted delivery outside off, creates a bit of a gap between bat and pad, hits the pad, but outside the line of off
|

no run,
shorter and flatter this time, and he stays back to push it back to Lyon
|

|

turning in to middle and leg, pushed to short leg
|

Danger man on. Watson to bowl. Two slips in place
|
45.1 |
Watson to Brathwaite,
no run,
on cue he produces the edge but dropped. Will be a little harsh to call it a drop. Short of a length, outside off, holds its line. KB pushes hard at it, and away from the body. The edge goes wide of second slip and is dying. Ponting dives full length. Gets the right to it, but the ball hits the wrist area and pops out. Dived a little too far perhaps
|
45.2 |
Watson to Brathwaite,
no run,
doesn't play at this one
|
45.3 |
Watson to Brathwaite,
no run,
pushes this length ball to mid-off
|
45.4 |
Watson to Brathwaite,
no run,
wide length ball outside off, shapes away nicely, but not close enough to make him play
|
45.5 |
Watson to Brathwaite,
no run,
slower ball, a 116ks, a legcutter, Brathwaite watches it well, drops the wrists, defending this shortish ball to cover
|
45.6 |
Watson to Brathwaite,
no run,
another false stroke, short of a length again, but regulation pace, hits the seam and moves away, and bounces a little extra, beating the cut

Lyon to KA Edwards,
1 run,
short of a length, stays back, moves across, punches this to mid-on
|
Silly point comes in for Brathwaite
|
46.3 |
Lyon to Brathwaite,
1 run,
short delivery, turning into the pads, worked away for an easy single
|
46.4 |
Lyon to KA Edwards,
SIX,
flat six, lovely shot. Edwards is hurting Lyon. Leaves the crease again, gets right to the pitch of the ball, which is on a length and just outside off, and he thumps it with the turn, over long-on
|
46.5 |
Lyon to KA Edwards,
no run,
solid front-foot defensive now to a similar delivery
|
46.6 |
Lyon to KA Edwards,

47.1 |
Watson to KA Edwards,
no run,
Watson keeps producing loose shots. These guys are batting so well against everybody else. This is a wide delivery, moves away too, but Edwards feels he has to play at it, and is lucky not to edge it
|
47.2 |
Watson to KA Edwards,
no run,
similar delivery again, and Edwards almost plays at it again, withdrawing late from the shot
|
Those who have not noticed before: Edwards stance is interesting. The back foot is right in front of the stumps, and the front foot way outside leg. Michael Holding has been saying that will not let him score runs in front of square on the off side, and the wagon wheel shows he has scored none in the arc from square third man to mid-off. Even wagon wheels don't argue against Mikey
|
47.3 |
Watson to KA Edwards,
no run,
length ball, closer to off, defended back to him
|
47.4 |
Watson to KA Edwards,

|
49.5 |
Watson to KA Edwards,
no run,
length ball, around a set of stumps wide, left alone now
|
49.6 |
Watson to KA Edwards,
FOUR,
Watson produces another edge, drawing him into a push at a length ball well outside off, but to his credit Edwards plays with soft hands and takes the bottom hand off, and the edge scoots along between the second slip and gully, all along the ground
