Bangladesh in West Indies ODI Series - 2nd ODI

West Indies v Bangladesh

West Indies won by 177 runs

8.50am Only 10 minutes now. Can Bangladesh secure that first win? Or will West Indies close out the series in a hurry? Jeff Dujon reckons the pitch will play out very similarly to the one in the previous match, so expect a slow surface with some inconsistent bounce. The stadium has a very good drainage system on hand, so hopefully the outfield will not be too affected by the earlier rain.

Hardfan: "BD needs just one win then everything will be back/ they way tamim is playing will do better or suitable for test. "

8.45am The news is that we will start the match on time, which didn't look a very rosy prospect even 30 minutes ago, so that is some good news.

Shane: "What Gayle needs to do is play his normal game, when he goes with the "get in approach" that takes alot of overs , i find that he opens himself to get out cheaply.. he needs to play his normal game and go after bowling. similar to the test vs Nz"

8.43am We have just the sole change in the teams from the previous match as the young Bangladeshi fast bowler, Taskin Ahmed, who impressed with his pace, has been left out in favour of the wily Abdur Razzak. With the rain having fallen, this is certainly a sensible move on what will undoubtedly be a slower surface. The West Indies remain unchanged.

Radiant Pink: "Don't you think that Bangladesh did reasonably well in the first ODI? Their batsmen put up a good score and the bowlers did alright and it was only a Pollard (and to an extent Ramdin) onslaught that scuppered their plans. The pitches are going to suit their kind of an attack and I think they can make an impact in the West Indies."

Tonathy: "@Tommy, his block block block, six, block block, six approach is very annoying from a fan's point of view."

8.35am And we have news from the toss as Bangladesh have won and have elected to bowl first.

8.30am I have just received word from a very reliable source that the rain has stopped in Grenada. Hopefully it remains this way so we can get cracking!

Tommy: "Chris Gayle had a net session in the last game. Wonder if he wants to bat properly today. "

8.25am If you haven't already, I strongly urge you to check out Isam's rather critical piece on Bangladesh's woeful performances in the ODI form of late, and just what may be needed to arrest the slide.

8.15am Hello and welcome to this second ODI between West Indies and Bangladesh in (not sunny) Grenada. For those who are raring to go in anticipation of this crucial match, I am afraid you will have to wait some time longer as the rain is coming down quite considerably here at the moment. We may just be in for a later start, but fingers crossed!

CH Gayle    11* (15b 1x4 1x6)      Mashrafe Mortaza    3-0-12-0

5.4

Al-Amin Hossain to Gayle, SIX, singles? who cares about singles? Gayle certainly doesn't, a tad short from Al Amin, at his pace, that is too easy to put away, especially for someone with the power of Gayle, who waits for it to arrive and dismisses it over midwicket

5.6

Al-Amin Hossain to DM Bravo, FOUR, an outside edge, streaky boundary for Bravo, gets this one wide of first slip, there is no second slip, the ball rolls away to the third-man boundary

CH Gayle    19* (20b 1x4 2x6)      Al-Amin Hossain    3-1-13-1

Adam Alves: "Kirk Edwards has one score over 40 in his ODI career (16 matches). Unfortunately, in the WI 15 there are no other specialist batsmen so we (WI fans) will have to bare with him for at least another game. I would like the inclusion of Dwayne Smith on the squad. Even though his average is 17 in ODIs he has grown as a player in the last year and i think a regular spot on the team will help him lots."

Off spin from both ends now.

DM Bravo    6* (16b 1x4)      Mahmudullah    1-0-1-0

J: "Just can't seem to please WI fans. Sammy in team - taking up space of a better player and making team weak. Sammy not in team - where is Sammy? he is the best finisher around. I say Sammy deserves better. How is Edwards still in this team? Specialist fielder? "

8.1

Mahmudullah to DM Bravo, 1 run, drives this fuller one from Mahmudullah down to the man at long off

8.2

Mahmudullah to Gayle, no run, gets solidly behind the line of this one tossed up on middle and leg

8.3

Mahmudullah to Gayle, no run, that looked a good shout as Mahmudullah strikes Gayle on his front pad after the big Jamaican decided to go for a conventional sweep, but missed the ball entirely. However the umpire rules that this one was going down the leg side. They have gone up for the review and replays show that it was indeed a close shout. Would have been 'umpire's call' if they had opted for a review. Therefore the decision remains not out.

8.4

Mahmudullah to Gayle, no run, Gayle prods forward to keep out this latest offering from Mahmudullah

8.5

Mahmudullah to Gayle, no run, once again on the front foot to keep out Mahmudullah

8.6

Mahmudullah to Gayle, no run, tries to create room on the off side to cut away but almost succeeds in chopping onto his stumps as there simply wasn't enough space with the line bowled by Mahmudullah, which was going straight on in line of the off stump

Radiant Pink: "Just saw that Gayle took the ice-bucket challenge? How much cooler has he become now?"

End of over 9 (1 run) West Indies 35/1 (RR: 3.88)

10.3

10.4

Mahmudullah to DM Bravo, 1 run, driven authoritatively by Bravo to long off

10.5

Mahmudullah to Gayle, no run, Gayle able to take out the malice from this Gazi delivery as this is played away to the off side

10.6

Mahmudullah to Gayle, no run, on the back foot as he pushes this one to the fielder on the off side

Charbel: "What I'd like to see in the DRS is for a team not to lose a review on an umpires call. It's incredibly harsh for Bangladesh in this case to lose a review on an incident when the ball was hitting the stumps.."

End of over 11 (5 runs) West Indies 43/1 (RR: 3.90)
CH Gayle    29* (37b 3x4 2x6)      Mahmudullah    3-0-7-0

11.5

11.6

Sohag Gazi to DM Bravo, no run, once again Bravo looks to cut outside off, but this one stays quite low as he is beaten in the end. Should have been on the front foot there.

Anthony Comacho: "It's surprising to see the WI selectors sticking with Kirk Edwards, just like their decision to stick with a failing coach in Gibson, some players are given the longest rope while others barely get a finger tip of a chance. Dwayne Smith also plays with hard hands as Edwards but scores quickly and gets off stick easily than Edwards who most time seems stuck at the crease, Smith is a way better fielder and offers something with the ball."

End of over 12 (2 runs) West Indies 45/1 (RR: 3.75)
DM Bravo    14* (27b 1x4)      Sohag Gazi    3-0-13-0
CH Gayle    30* (39b 3x4 2x6)      Mahmudullah    3-0-7-0

13.4

Nasir Hossain to Gayle, no run, defends this one straight back to the bowler

13.5

13.6

Nasir Hossain to DM Bravo, 2 runs, Bravo manages to just get this away behind square, but is lucky to evade the fielders nearby, as this ends up falling safely away. Manages to get a couple out of that

SD: "Well, here is the problem of having no third seamer in the side. The two batsmen out there are fair to good players of spin. Right now, one feels, it's a bit too early to have spin at both ends. The pacers were getting some bite with the new ball. This might allow the West Indians to milk the Bangladeshi bowling and get settled. Not something you want to allow either of these two batsmen, especially an apparently out-of-form Gayle. "

End of over 14 (8 runs) West Indies 55/1 (RR: 3.92)
DM Bravo    22* (31b 2x4)      Nasir Hossain    1-0-8-0
CH Gayle    32* (47b 3x4 2x6)      Mahmudullah    4-0-9-0

14.3

Mahmudullah to Gayle, SIX, what is this? Gayle has decided it is time to release some pent-up energy as he goes for yet another handsome blow, this time down the ground, to make it consecutive sixes. Will he make it a hat-trick?

14.4

Mahmudullah to Gayle, no run, this time decides to stay back and simply dab this one behind point

14.5

Mahmudullah to Gayle, no run, no run as he looks to go for the cut through the off side

14.6

Mahmudullah to Gayle, no run, Mahmudullah may have just got his man as he gets one to turn away upon pitching middle and leg, with Gayle on the back foot looking to pull this through midwicket, but ends up missing as the ball strikes his thigh pad, which looks in line with the stumps. The umpire gives it out initially, but West Indies go for the review and it does show that the ball did pitch outside marginally outside leg, so a good review there by the West indies.

End of over 15 (13 runs) West Indies 68/1 (RR: 4.53)
CH Gayle    44* (53b 3x4 4x6)      Mahmudullah    5-0-22-0

End of over 16 (1 run) West Indies 69/1 (RR: 4.31)
DM Bravo    23* (37b 2x4)      Al-Amin Hossain    4-1-14-1

Mashrafe Mortaza to Gayle, no run, this time looks to penetrate through extra-cover, but the fielder is up to the challenge

Shad: "Wondering how many times Gayle has batted through to the 45th over of an ODI innings batting first since the advent of the IPL. His highest is 153, but you'd think he would get pretty close to 200 if he finds his groove."

16.4

Gayle is looking ominous here. If he sticks around for some more overs he could become a real thorn in the side for Bangladesh

End of over 17 (4 runs) West Indies 73/1 (RR: 4.29)
CH Gayle    46* (57b 3x4 4x6)      Mashrafe Mortaza    4-0-16-0

Abdur Razzak to Simmons, 1 run, slightly short of length and outside off, Ramdin opens the face to guide it to short third man

38.5

Abdur Razzak to Ramdin, FOUR, this one a little short from Razzak as Ramdin quickly gets into position by clearing his front leg to paddle sweep this just in front of square for the first boundary in over 15 overs. Much needed one there for the West Indies

38.6

Abdur Razzak to Ramdin, no run, yorker ball on off, Ramdin gets back to cut then ends up getting his bat down in time to jam it to the off-side

Fogu: "At the risking of jinxing my team, BD bowlers are bowling well as well. It is not all about poor batting by WI. If they could hit the balls for boundaries, they would. "

End of over 39 (7 runs) West Indies 166/3 (RR: 4.25)
D Ramdin    34* (50b 1x4)      Abdur Razzak    9-0-40-0

Time for a bowling change as Al-Amin replaces Mortaza

39.1

Al-Amin Hossain to Simmons, FOUR, overpitched from Al-Amin outside off as Simmons manages to get bat on ball as this one flies away through the slip region to the third man boundary. Another four for the West Indies, and they will need plenty of them now.

39.2

Al-Amin Hossain to Simmons, 1 run, almost a carbon copy of the previous delivery, except this time the ball finds the fielder. Was looking to cut that away, and that too quite low outside the off stump

39.3

Al-Amin Hossain to Ramdin, OUT, Al-Amin shows some bowling nous as he drops the pace on this delivery, bowling in the same channel as before. Simmons, who was looking increasingly fidgety outside that off stump, this time looks to blast the bowler down the ground, but only succeeds in getting a thick outside edge which carries to Mushfiqur, who takes a good, low catch

D Ramdin c †Mushfiqur Rahim b Al-Amin Hossain 34 (64m 51b 1x4 0x6) SR: 66.66

The new batsman for the West Indies is Keiron Pollard, the hero of the other day with his powerful knock

39.4

Al-Amin Hossain to Pollard, 1 leg bye, Al-Amin almost plucks another one as he gets this one to come in upon pitching just outside off, with Pollard late on it as he is struck on the pad, however Pollard's big stride down the pitch may have just saved him there. Bangladesh are also out of their reviews, so they didn't have any choice but to adhere to the umpire's call. This would have gone over the top anyways

39.5

Al-Amin Hossain to Simmons, no run, length ball on off, Simmons defends it back to the bowler

39.6

Al-Amin Hossain to Simmons, no run, length delivery on off, Simmons gets forward and defends it to point

christian: "I think you have to put the blame for ramdin's dismissal on simmons's shoulders. by soaking up dot ball after dot ball, simmons loaded pressure on the his partner to move the score along. clever bowling by Hossain to exploit Ramdin's desperation."

End of over 40 (6 runs) West Indies 172/4 (RR: 4.30)

Abdur Razzak to Pollard, 1 run, eases this one to the man at midwicket for a single

40.2

Different dog on the field now. They all want to have a look.

40.3

Abdur Razzak to Simmons, 1 run, Simmons stays on the back foot and punches to long-on

40.4

Abdur Razzak to Pollard, no run, punched off the back foot by Simmons to the right of the bowler

40.5

Abdur Razzak to Pollard, 1 run, and he finally manages that single down the ground to long on to get off strike

40.6

Abdur Razzak to Simmons, no run, ends his ten-over spell with one that is played back to him by the batsman

End of over 41 (3 runs) West Indies 175/4 (RR: 4.26)

We have Gazi now into the attack to replace Al-Amin

41.1

Sohag Gazi to Pollard, 2 runs, is able to find some space just outside off to cut away behind square as backward point is slow on the take, which allows for the extra run

41.2

Sohag Gazi to Pollard, no run, waits for this one to spin in to him before getting on the back foot to play away to the leg side

41.3

Sohag Gazi to Pollard, 1 run, slightly faster delivery on the same line as Pollard is able to ease this away to mid on

41.4

Sohag Gazi to Simmons, FOUR, Simmons gains some much-needed confidence as he slaps this away through mid off and extra-cover for a boundary. This one was asking to be punished

41.5

Sohag Gazi to Simmons, 1 run, short and on the leg stump, Simmons pulls it through backward square leg

41.6

Sohag Gazi to Pollard, no run, Pollard once again looking to whip this away leg side, but can't penetrate the field

SD: "Losing Ramdin at this stage is bad enough for the West Indies. Simmons oh-but-I-need-to-get-my-eye-in-first approach is not helping matters either. The other day, Ramdin's smart batting proved to be oxygen for Pollard. Simmons should now look to rotate the strike, score runs, because this is the stage where the advantage needs to be driven home. Of course, that's assuming Pollard will successfully be able to exhibit his pyrotechnics. "

End of over 42 (8 runs) West Indies 183/4 (RR: 4.35)

Change of ends for Al-Amin as he is brought back on by Mushfiqur

42.1

Al-Amin Hossain to Simmons, 1 run, and he starts off by bowling a low full toss which Simmons opens the face to guide down to third man

42.2

Al-Amin Hossain to Pollard, 1 run, Pollard steps forward to clip this one through midwicket

42.3

Al-Amin Hossain to Simmons, 1 run, fires this one just inside of the 'wide' line outside off as Simmons manages to squirt this away through the off side for a quick single

James: "WI should have been looking at 280 half way through. 250 would be a good effort now (though Pollard is capable of getting it to 280)."

42.4

Al-Amin Hossain to Pollard, FOUR, Al-Amin has been slightly predictable here as Pollard advances down the track to loft him through cow corner for a boundary, beating the fielder placed at deep midwicket to the rope

42.5

Al-Amin Hossain to Pollard, 1 run, wide outside off stump, Pollard drills it along the ground to long off

42.6

Al-Amin Hossain to Simmons, 1 run, Simmons tried to glance this good length delivery very fine, but only manages to edge to to short fine leg for one

c: "Fogu, their technique is not the problem. It's their mindset. These 'young' west indies batsmen don't hone their skills to play test cricket, so they don't know how to move a scoreboard along with singles. instead, they block until they can hit boundaries. When did you last hear commentators constantly complimenting a windies batsman on his timing and touch? all we hear about now is their 'powerful hitting.' They can't handle spinners, so they block and block. The experienced Shiv and the legendary Lara didn't block. they guided the ball into spaces. If there was a single they took it. If not, they waited for the next ball. This new generation don't know how to do that now."

End of over 43 (9 runs) West Indies 192/4 (RR: 4.46)

43.2

Sohag Gazi to Pollard, 1 run, short delivery on the leg stump, Pollard pulls it to deep midwicket

43.3

Sohag Gazi to Simmons, 1 run, Simmons advances and drives the flighted delivery to long on

43.4

Sohag Gazi to Pollard, SIX, time for some stand and deliver as Pollard launches himself on this one which is slightly short on middle and leg as Pollard gets into good position to short-arm pull this all the way for an 88m six over deep midwicket

43.5

Sohag Gazi to Pollard, 1 wide, fires this one down the leg side as the umpire calls a wide

43.5

Sohag Gazi to Pollard, 1 run, manages to flick this one away on the leg side to midwicket

43.6

Sohag Gazi to Simmons, 1 run, a nice lollipop offered here from Gazi, but Simmons is rude enough to find the fielder at deep backward square leg, rather than make the spinner pay

Joker: "Sohag Gazi is becoming ordinary day by day since he is loosing confidence on his flight and has started to bowl flat and short more often than not."

44.3

No one seems bothered as a dog casually jogs through the outfield

44.5

Al-Amin Hossain to Simmons, no run, Simmons tries to be cheeky, opening the face of the bat to try and send one past short third man, but misses

44.6

Mortaza has been called back into the attack

46.1

Mashrafe Mortaza to Simmons, 1 wide, and not the best of starts as he begins with a wide outside off

46.1

Mashrafe Mortaza to Simmons, 2 runs, length ball on off which Simmons lifts through midwicket, looking to beat the two fielders placed near cow corner, but the man at long on is able to put in the dive to stop the ball from reaching the boundary

46.2

Mashrafe Mortaza to Simmons, 1 run, this time looks for the slap through extra-cover, but extra-cover moves over expertly to field the ball

hitesh: "How did Dogs always gets in grounds in indai, srillanka and indies.."

46.3

Mashrafe Mortaza to Pollard, FOUR, easy as you like from Pollard as he doesn't seem to be at all rushed in picking this one going down the leg side and just flicking it deftly behind him to the fine leg boundary. So easy on the eyes

46.4

Mashrafe Mortaza to Pollard, OUT, and it's all over as Pollard, looking for a big hit through long on, gets an under edge which spills behind onto his stumps, rearranging them much to his chagrin. Big wicket there for Bangladesh as this is the kind of situation Pollard would have loved to be around for.

DJ Bravo    1* (1b)      Sohag Gazi    9-1-47-1

47.1

Al-Amin Hossain to Simmons, no run, short of a length and angling away as Simmons is unable to get this away, with the ball ended up being hit back to the bowler

47.2

Al-Amin Hossain to Simmons, 1 run, really ugly swipe from Simmons as he looked to dance down the track to slap Al-Amin through the covers, but ends up looking away in the process as this one is hit instead behind square on the off side. Still manages to eke out a single from that

47.3

Al-Amin Hossain to DJ Bravo, no run, good slower ball outside off which Bravo is not even in the time zone off as he looks to heave over the off side

48.2

Mashrafe Mortaza to Simmons, no run, looking to deposit Mortaza over long on, but the slower delivery has him swinging early for the fences

48.3

Mashrafe Mortaza to Simmons, OUT, this time uses his feet to get to the pitch as he lifts this high and handsome over long on, but doesn't get the distance required as this falls into the waiting hands of Mahmudullah, who ends up taking a straightforward catch. Ends a miserable stay at the crease for Simmons, who never really had the kind of fluency he craved for.

LMP Simmons c Mahmudullah b Mashrafe Mortaza 40 (70m 61b 3x4 0x6) SR: 65.57

Rahimullah: "Remember when Simmons used to use his feet and hit sixes off pacers? Neither Do I. "

48.4

Mashrafe Mortaza to DJ Bravo, OUT, this is just what the doctor ordered for Bangladesh as this time Bravo, looking to pull across the line of this shorter one outside off, ends up getting an outside edge which Mushfiqur snaps up gleefully. Mortaza on a hat-trick, and West Indies' hopes of quick runs looking rather grim

Into the final over now. West Indies will be desperate to reach somewhere close to 250 to made it a stiff challenge. Can Bangladesh eke out a few more wickets though?

49.6

Al-Amin Hossain to Holder, 2 runs, into the blockhole again as Holder digs this one out towards mid on, with the pair running the first one hard as they come back for the second, which they are able to complete just in time of the throw

We will be back shortly for the Bangladesh reply. Can they pull off that elusive first victory? Should be an interesting second innings..

The Bangladesh bowlers kept the pressure up for the most part, with special praise going to the new-ball bowlers, Mortaza and Al-Amin, for their disciplined spells.

And with that the West Indies manage to get themselves to a respectable 247 for 7 after their fifty overs. The innings was shaped largely by the contributions of Chris Gayle, Darren Bravo, Denesh Ramdin and Lendl Simmons.
