England in West Indies ODI Series - 2nd ODI

West Indies v England

England won by 3 wickets (with 31 balls remaining)

Looks like seam first up from West Indies. Dwayne Bravo with two slips...

Welcome back to the second half of this game. England need 160. West Indies need some magic from Narine and some help from Miller.

0.1

DJ Bravo to Lumb, no run, full outside off, left alone

Actually has one slip and a gully

0.2

DJ Bravo to Lumb, no run, full delivery, on the pads, and it's clipped very sweetly but straight to mid-on

0.3

DJ Bravo to Lumb, FOUR, England up and running, drives a delivery outside off and it comes off a thick outside edge which beats gully and runs to vacant third man area

0.4

DJ Bravo to Lumb, no run, full on off stump, hints to come back into Lumb who defends

Fine leg has come up, long-on goes back

0.5

DJ Bravo to Lumb, no run, finds the edge, but it's a slower ball and played with soft hands so falls well short of slip

0.6

DJ Bravo to Lumb, no run, length delivery, tucked to midwicket

End of over 1 (4 runs) England 4/0 (156 runs required from 49 overs, RR: 4.00, RRR: 3.18)
MJ Lumb    4* (6b 1x4)      DJ Bravo    1-0-4-0
MM Ali    0* (0b)

All pace with new balls. It's Ravi Rampaul

1.1

Rampaul to Ali, 1 run, full on middle, hint of swing into Moeen who clips it through the leg side

1.2

Rampaul to Lumb, no run, nearly chops on, it's back of a length and he aims to angle it down to third man but it comes off the bottom edge into his boot

1.3

Rampaul to Lumb, no run, short and fairly wide, 124kph/77mph, left alone

1.4

Rampaul to Lumb, 2 runs, shuffles across the crease and flicks this from around middle and off through straight midwicket

1.5

Rampaul to Lumb, no run, full outside off, left alone

1.6

Rampaul to Lumb, no run, he goes after some width but it takes the cue end of the bat into the off side

End of over 2 (3 runs) England 7/0 (153 runs required from 48 overs, RR: 3.50, RRR: 3.18)
MJ Lumb    6* (11b 1x4)      R Rampaul    1-0-3-0
MM Ali    1* (1b)      DJ Bravo    1-0-4-0

2.1

DJ Bravo to Ali, 4 leg byes, another batsmen gets taken on the helmet, a slippery bouncer from Bravo and it beats him for pace then glances off the back of his head down to third man

2.2

DJ Bravo to Ali, no run, pushed across full outside off, left alone

2.3

DJ Bravo to Ali, no run, leaves alone again

2.4

DJ Bravo to Ali, no run, on off stump, flicked to mid-on

2.5

DJ Bravo to Ali, no run, comes onto the front foot and drives back to the bowler

2.6

DJ Bravo to Ali, FOUR, lovely stroke, goes after a wide delivery this time with a lofted cover drive. No holding back, placed it perfectly. A very languid shot

End of over 3 (8 runs) England 15/0 (145 runs required from 47 overs, RR: 5.00, RRR: 3.08)
MM Ali    5* (7b 1x4)      DJ Bravo    2-0-8-0
MJ Lumb    6* (11b 1x4)      R Rampaul    1-0-3-0

3.1

Rampaul to Lumb, no run, big appeal for caught behind, but more from behind the batsman. The delivery nipped back off a length and cut Lumb in half. Rampaul just had his hands on his head. Clipped to top of the back leg.

3.2

Rampaul to Lumb, no run, defended into the off side

3.3

Rampaul to Lumb, 1 run, now Lumb goes after a wide delivery, threw the kitchen sink at that, his weight was on the back foot and the ball flew off a thick top edge down to third man...just wide of Sammy at gully

3.4

Rampaul to Ali, no run, short and wide, but Moeen misses out as he mistimes into the covers

3.5

Rampaul to Ali, 2 runs, short on leg stump, he pulls although is a little cramped for room and it comes high off the bat, although the lack of timing helps him come back for a second

3.6

Rampaul to Ali, no run, a full-on bouncer this time, over leg stump, Moeen bails out of an attacking stroke and lets his pass over his shoulder

End of over 4 (3 runs) England 18/0 (142 runs required from 46 overs, RR: 4.50, RRR: 3.08)
MM Ali    7* (10b 1x4)      R Rampaul    2-0-6-0
MJ Lumb    7* (14b 1x4)      DJ Bravo    2-0-8-0

4.1

DJ Bravo to Lumb, no run, short outside off, Lumb thinks about pulling but then drops his bat and leaves alone

A catcher goes into a very square midwicket

4.2

DJ Bravo to Lumb, 1 run, he helps this short ball around the corner on the leg side, rolled his wrists to ensure the ball went to ground although it still carried a fair distance in the air

4.3

DJ Bravo to Ali, no run, short again, over leg stump (or perhaps just outside), Moeen goes to pull but the ball goes over his gloves

4.4

DJ Bravo to Ali, 1 run, an elegant pull, played off one leg, and played with a lot of control out to deep square

Not much pitched up at the moment

4.5

DJ Bravo to Lumb, 2 runs, keeps it short, pulled behind square on the leg side but deep square is just able to prevent the boundary

4.6

DJ Bravo to Lumb, 1 run, ah, a fuller delivery, on leg stump and it's clipped to deep square

No run-rate pressure at all for England, but they will want to eat into this target before spin (especially Narine) comes on

End of over 5 (5 runs) England 23/0 (137 runs required from 45 overs, RR: 4.60, RRR: 3.04)
MJ Lumb    11* (18b 1x4)      DJ Bravo    3-0-13-0
MM Ali    8* (12b 1x4)      R Rampaul    2-0-6-0

Well, no more eating away at runs before Narine comes on. Because he's on now. West Indies couldn't really wait. Slip and a short leg in place

5.1

Narine to Lumb, no run, outside off, hint of spin away, left alone

5.2

Narine to Lumb, no run, defended to the off side

5.3

Narine to Lumb, 1 run, fuller, he comes forward and drives down to long-off

England can, of course, just play out Narine if they want to

5.4

Narine to Ali, no run, gets a stride forward and defends with a slightly open face

5.5

Narine to Ali, no run, think that was the other one, spinning into Moeen, finds a think inside edge but goes to ground past short leg

5.6

Narine to Ali, 2 runs, he's beaten in the flight here, but goes through his drive strongly enough that it clears the off-side ring

End of over 6 (3 runs) England 26/0 (134 runs required from 44 overs, RR: 4.33, RRR: 3.04)
MM Ali    10* (15b 1x4)      SP Narine    1-0-3-0
MJ Lumb    12* (21b 1x4)      DJ Bravo    3-0-13-0

Change of ends for Ravi Rampaul

6.1

Rampaul to Lumb, no run, on off stump, defended on the back foot

6.2

Rampaul to Lumb, no run, aims to work this away from middle stump, a slower cutter, the ball runs to mid-on

6.3

Rampaul to Lumb, 2 runs, a short-arm pull through square leg, dropped short again and Lumb has plenty of time

6.4

Rampaul to Lumb, 1 run, on off stump, short of a length, punched off the back foot to the left of cover

6.5

Rampaul to Ali, OUT, well, the short ball works! Moeen didn't keep this one down, and was hitting into the wind which is pretty strong, and provides deep square with a simple catch. Disappointing shot from Moeen, finding a deep fielder twice in two innings

MM Ali c Miller b Rampaul 10 (27m 16b 1x4 0x6) SR: 62.50

Luke Wright stays at No. 3

6.6

Rampaul to Wright, no run, another blow from a short ball, Wright goes for the pull and gets beaten. The ball hammers into his grille.

End of over 7 (3 runs) England 29/1 (131 runs required from 43 overs, RR: 4.14, RRR: 3.04)
LJ Wright    0* (1b)      R Rampaul    3-0-9-1
MJ Lumb    15* (25b 1x4)      SP Narine    1-0-3-0

7.1

Narine to Lumb, no run, defended square to point

7.2

Narine to Lumb, 1 run, flicks a straight delivery out to deep midwicket

Very important innings for Wright. Needs to show he can live in the top order. Three men around the bat

7.3

Narine to Wright, no run, close! Almost beaten on the back foot as he plays into the off side against an offspinner

7.4

Narine to Wright, no run, this one spins away, and bounces, to beat the top edge as he goes to cut

7.5

Narine to Wright, no run, a beauty! Beats him all ends up. Grips and spins just enough to go past the outside edge. Not sure Wright has a clue

7.6

Narine to Wright, OUT, all over! That was on the cards. Wonderful over, but Wright out-classed. This scoots past the outside edge, the legspinner, and takes off stump

LJ Wright b Narine 0 (3m 5b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

End of over 8 (1 run) England 30/2 (130 runs required from 42 overs, RR: 3.75, RRR: 3.09)
     SP Narine    2-0-4-1
MJ Lumb    16* (27b 1x4)      R Rampaul    3-0-9-1

So, all of a sudden, this chase is looking tougher. Narine in the game.

8.1

Rampaul to Lumb, 3 runs, full on middle, nicely clipped away through midwicket

8.2

Rampaul to Root, no run, short of a length outside off, played down in front of the man at about fourth slip

8.3

Rampaul to Root, no run, left alone outside off

Charles: "surely it makes much more sense to open with Wright and have Moeen at 3" Just not sure Wright is good enough.

8.4

Rampaul to Root, 1 run, width outside off, chopped behind point down to third man

8.5

Rampaul to Lumb, no run, on middle and off, defended to the leg side

Will: "I'm afraid Luke Wright is capable of unbelievable county and domestic innings', but is simply not an international cricketer, as I Sussex fan I want him to succeed but surely he's had enough chances now."

8.6

Rampaul to Lumb, FOUR, top shot! Terrific piece of timing on a slow pitch, punching a short-of-a-length delivery off the back foot through cover

End of over 9 (8 runs) England 38/2 (122 runs required from 41 overs, RR: 4.22, RRR: 2.97)
MJ Lumb    23* (30b 2x4)      R Rampaul    4-0-17-1
JE Root    1* (3b)      SP Narine    2-0-4-1

Narine to Root, no run, gets forward and defends

9.2

Narine to Root, no run, beats the outside edge, bounce this time as well

9.3

Narine to Root, 1 run, fraction shorter and straighter, allows him to go back and tuck into square leg

KellyM: "They don't need Wright's bowling, and his batting alone just isn't good enough to secure a place in the team. I think Ballance should be playing"

9.4

Narine to Lumb, no run, prods forward on middle, defends to the leg side

9.5

Narine to Lumb, no run, a careful prod forward, pushed to the covers

9.6

Narine to Lumb, no run, quicker delivery outside off, left alone

MJ Lumb    23* (33b 2x4)      SP Narine    3-0-5-1
JE Root    2* (6b)      R Rampaul    4-0-17-1

Second spinner comes into the attack. Nikita Miller with his left-arm spin. He's been in good form in his recent ODIs. Slip in place...

10.1

Miller to Root, 1 run, round the wicket, full on leg stump, worked off his toes into midwicket

More close catchers coming in. Short leg puts the helmet on. Bravo (Dwayne) very lively at slip

10.2

Miller to Lumb, no run, over the wicket, clipped straight into short leg

10.3

Miller to Lumb, no run, nice spin out of the footmarks, bounces at Lumb as he gets forward

10.4

10.5

Miller to Lumb, 1 run, dragged down short, flicked off the back foot behind square

10.6

End of over 11 (3 runs) England 42/2 (118 runs required from 39 overs, RR: 3.81, RRR: 3.02)
JE Root    4* (8b)      NO Miller    1-0-3-0
MJ Lumb    24* (37b 2x4)      SP Narine    3-0-5-1

For all the talk about Wright, he wouldn't be in the side if they weren't preparing for the T20 (whether he should even be there is another debate)

11.1

Narine to Root, no run, defended on the back foot

11.2

Narine to Root, no run, gets a think inside edge into his pads as tries to work into the leg side

Slip, leg slip and short leg now

11.5

Narine to Root, 1 run, picks it off into midwicket, that seems to be their one release shot

11.6

End of over 12 (1 run) England 43/2 (117 runs required from 38 overs, RR: 3.58, RRR: 3.07)
MJ Lumb    24* (38b 2x4)      SP Narine    4-0-6-1

12.5

Miller to Root, 1 run, tight! Drifted on leg stump, Root tickled it to short fine-leg, Lumb called for the run but had to get the dive out. The fielder, perhaps, a little slow

12.6

Miller to Lumb, 1 run, shorter delivery outside off, turning into him, driven off the back foot down the ground

End of over 13 (2 runs) England 45/2 (115 runs required from 37 overs, RR: 3.46, RRR: 3.10)

A short, straight cover in place

13.2

Narine to Lumb, 1 run, round the wicket, touch shorter, driven square off the back foot through point

Paulo: "Not sure Wright should be in the T20side either. Averages under 20, doesn't bowl and only has 4 50s in nearly 50 matches. Taylor, Ballance, Vince, (KP), anybody for him."

14.5

Miller to Lumb, FOUR, drifts down the leg side, Lumb tickles it off his pads and it has the pace to reach the fine-leg boundary

DJ Bravo to Root, OUT, full length delivery, Root comes forward and presses it back up the wicket, in fact he's popped it back to Bravo who takes a straightforward chance going to his right at waist height. Little bit of pace off the ball perhaps? It didn't seem that way but Root was on the stroke much too soon and tapped a catch back to the bowler

21.2

Buttler got into a position to ride the bounce and try and drop it down, then saw it rising steeply and tried to get inside the line and failed, the ball brushing the glove through to Ramdin, West Indies are cock-a-hoop

Relief for England who win by three wickets. A captain's innings from Broad, and it's not often that's been said of late, and a very composed hand by Bopara. A significant innings from him, finally seeing England across the line in a chase. Is that a victory for team ethics, bonding and how much they all like each other?

It was not, it has to be said, a match filled with quality batting. West Indies folded badly, and couldn't even bat the innings, then England collapsed in turn - and it wasn't even Narine who did much of the damage.

Mark: "So, Ravi Bopara is not good as a finisher? Showed loads of bottle again today. Pretty good from the captain too, today - kept calm and rode his luck." One innings, Mark. But, yes, they both did well. Did I mention that India ODI earlier? Stay with us for the presentation.

Dwayne Bravo "It was a poor batting display. I expected better. We keep losing early wickets and it's something we have to look at. We have a never-say-die attitude, we didn't want to drop our heads. We knew we had Sunil Narine and Miller. Happy with the bowling group but let down by the batters. [The lower order] will get some harsh words."

Stuart Broad "Delighted to have won, we made it hard work. The bowling was awesome, the way the guys learnt from the other day. It's been quite a hard wicket to score on. We had a wobble but great to get over the line. There's some turn for the spinners and were hard to score off. It creates pressure and wickets come. That's what Ravi is batting at No. 7 for, we know he's a good finisher. It's great to see him take that responsibility on. We took it five runs at a time which helped our minds stay clear."

And the Man of the Match is Stephen Parry for his three wickets on debut. Thought it may have gone to Bopara, but bowled well. "It's one of the proudest moments of my life. Six months ago I didn't think I'd be on the tour. It's a dream come true."

That just about wraps things up from us for today. We'll be back for the decider on Wednesday. Don't forget about the Test and ODI action tomorrow from around the world. For now, though, from Andrew McGlashan and Alex Winter it's goodbye and thanks for joining us.
