India in West Indies ODI Series - 1st ODI

West Indies v India

India won by 4 wickets (with 31 balls remaining)

Right, game time then. Simmons and Edwards will open for the Windies. India have two seamers and several spinning options. I am Nitin Sundar, taking you through the first innings. Sid Talya will take over for the chase. Sriram Veera lets me know that he is drenched in sweat on a very hot and humid day in Trinidad.

Sourabh: "@Irfan: Mate its 1am already here in NZ. Man is tomorrow gonna be painful." Tough to find an excuse for a late morning in NZ. You can't say you did not find sheep to count!

Irfan: "oh! Ind batting 2nd means until 2.30am in Ind, can anybody tell some good excuse for tommorrows delay in office?" Say you got involved in some paranormal activity, which kept you up late into the night. Works for me most of the time.

Anjali: "I think the IPL has finally caught up with Raina - he is no longer sure which format he is playing on any given day!" Much like most of us.

Aaram: "Imagine Raina at the post-match press conference explaining why Mishra needed the match more than Ashwin!" Haha! Deja vu all around. Venkat adds to the nostalgia by reminding us of Dhoni's logic for leaving Ashwin out of most of the World Cup games: "Ashwin is dropped for a simple reason. He is mentally very strong! Phew."

Mikey sends in this comment: "Why no Pollard?! Anthony Martin is 28 and has played 2 matches without taking a wicket and cannot bat. Pollard is 24 and has the potential to be an explosive allrounder. Where are the selectors going with this team? What are they trying to do to West Indies cricket?"

Sammy: "We stuck to the side that played the last ODI against Pakistan, so Pollard and Russell miss out." Raina spuriously says India has been playing very good ODI cricket for the last couple of months. It is exactly two months and four days since their last ODI, the World Cup final. I am confused.

9AM start to proceedings, to make it convenient for the Indian public. Outcome: Close to empty stands. Chris Gayle would say kiss-teeth if he saw this crowd. Don't think he's around today, though.

Brian: "I was going to say, "What? No Ashwin again!" but decided that it was quite pointless."

Toss: West Indies win the toss and have decided to bat. Pollard, interestingly, has been left out, along with Andre Russell. India also spring a surprise, leaving R Ashwin out for Amit Mishra. Of course, you wouldn't know any of this if you are watching on TV in India. The channel showing this series, for some reason, never shows us the toss when it happens.

West Indies XI: Sammy (capt), Dwayne Bravo, Baugh (wk), Bishoo, Darren Bravo, Edwards, Martin, Rampaul, Samuels, Sarwan and Simmons

India XI: Raina (capt), Harbhajan, Badrinath, Kohli, Praveen Kumar, Mishra, Munaf Patel, Parthiv Patel (wk), Pathan, Rohit Sharma, Dhawan.

Hello all! Welcome to our coverage of the first ODI. The toss is around ten minutes away, and in the mean time, here is Sid Talya's preview to the game. It is a fresh start for the World Champions, and they will begin it with a XI that has very little in common with the one that triumphed at the Wankhede on April 2. Still, they will go in a favourites against West Indies, the return of Sarwan, Dwayne Bravo and Pollard notwithstanding. Jeff Dujon says the pitch is likely to be slow, and should assist batsmen. That won't please Darren Sammy, who has been pleading for pacy wickets. On the brighter side, the weather is really good and we don't expect rain to interrupt the game.

0.1

Kumar to Simmons, 1 wide, Praveen starts with a ball very wide of off stump and swinging away late. Called a wide.

Two slips in place.

0.1

Kumar to Simmons, 1 leg bye, Praveen trots in and lands this back of a length on leg, and it straightens into the pads. Nudged off the back foot towards square leg. Goes off the pad.

0.2

Kumar to Edwards, 1 wide, another big wide outside off, Praveen is moving the ball nicely, but the line is a little awry.

0.2

Kumar to Edwards, FOUR, that's the line, gentle pace from Praveen angles in towards leg and then curls away late, forcing Edwards into a tentative poke. Outside edge doesn't carry, this is a very slow pitch, and Parthiv dives away to parry it on the bounce and it scoots through to the left of first slip and away for four.

0.3

Kumar to Edwards, no run, moves this one to the line outside off, not as wide as before, but an easy leave nevertheless.

0.4

Kumar to Edwards, no run, the deception after setting him up with a series of away swingers, this one holds its line and hits the pad as Edward looks to turn it around to the leg side. That bounces extra and hit him very high, easily missing the stumps.

0.5

Kumar to Edwards, no run, the outswinger again, Edwards let it go as it starts moving from well outside off.

0.6

Kumar to Edwards, no run, finishes with a very full ball that angles in, and Edwards digs it out from the crease.

End of over 1 (7 runs) West Indies 7/0 (RR: 7.00)
KA Edwards    4* (5b 1x4)      P Kumar    1-0-6-0
LMP Simmons    0* (1b)

Sunil Gavaskar is on West Indies radio commentary, and he just said Munaf Patel is like Glenn McGrath. Munaf to bowl now.

1.1

MM Patel to Simmons, no run, length ball, on a McGrath lengh outside off and holding its line, played cautiously to the leg side.

1.2

MM Patel to Simmons, no run, fuller this time, but not there for the drive. Simmons defends to the off side.

1.3

MM Patel to Simmons, no run, goes wider outside off, and the first touch of away movement for Munaf. Simmons lets it go through.

1.4

MM Patel to Simmons, no run, slightly fuller, closer to the stumps, Simmons is not tempted yet.

1.5

MM Patel to Simmons, no run, he's lived up to the McGrath comparison so far. On a length outside off, Simmons defends after getting confidently across.

1.6

MM Patel to Simmons, no run, maiden from Munaf. Ends with another disciplined ball, back of a length outside off and wafting away gently. Another leave from Simmons.

End of over 2 (maiden) West Indies 7/0 (RR: 3.50)
LMP Simmons    0* (7b)      MM Patel    1-1-0-0
KA Edwards    4* (5b 1x4)      P Kumar    1-0-6-0

2.1

Kumar to Edwards, 1 run, edgy from Edwards. Praveen again gets that swerve away, and Edwards looks to play, then decides to leave late, but ends up edging it to third man even as he pulls the bat away.

2.2

Kumar to Simmons, no run, lovely ball, legcutter of sorts, and Edwards does well not to nick it. It came in and nipped away, even as it bounced true, and Simmons' outside edge was just inside the line as he tried to cover for the movement.

2.3

Kumar to Simmons, no run, this one holds the line, Simmons plays it cautiously to the leg side.

2.4

Kumar to Simmons, no run, back of a length stock delivery outside off, this is not an easy pitch when the ball is new, and Simmons lets it go to Parthiv.

2.5

Kumar to Simmons, no run, hint of width this time, Simmons gets half across to it and then chooses to leave again.

2.6

Kumar to Simmons, no run, quiet start from the Windies, it is not even a whisper. Praveen keeps it a foot outside off and gets it to bend away, and Simmons leaves again.

End of over 3 (1 run) West Indies 8/0 (RR: 2.66)
LMP Simmons    0* (12b)      P Kumar    2-0-7-0
KA Edwards    5* (6b 1x4)      MM Patel    1-1-0-0

3.1

MM Patel to Edwards, 1 run, clanged by Rohit Sharma. Not sure what he's doing at first slip, he's used to being in the covers. Lovely ball from Munaf, gentle curve away as it comes out of the hand and lands outside off, and then not so gentle movement off the seam. Edwards is sucked into a loose drive, and the edge goes at a nice catchable height to Rohit's right. He gets both hands to it and drops it.

3.2

MM Patel to Simmons, no run, Simmons looks to make something happen here, half a step outside the crease and he looks to crack him through the covers, but doesn't place it too well.

3.3

MM Patel to Simmons, 5 wides, not very McGrathesque there. Munaf pushes this well down the leg, and the other Patel doesn't get his gloves to it.

3.3

MM Patel to Simmons, FOUR, top shot from Simmons, he trots out towards the pitch of the ball, converts a length ball into a half-volley and then launches it over Munaf's head.

3.4

MM Patel to Simmons, 1 run, nice diving stop from Kohli at point, he moves quickly to the right and dives to his right to keep the steer down to a single.

3.5

MM Patel to Edwards, 1 run, Edwards tries to chop from the off-stump line, and gets another single away.

3.6

MM Patel to Simmons, no run, good finish from Munaf, whangs it in a little shorter and extracts a extra yard of bounce. Simmons realises it at the last moment and drops the wrists after thinking of cutting.

End of over 4 (12 runs) West Indies 20/0 (RR: 5.00)
LMP Simmons    5* (16b 1x4)      MM Patel    2-1-12-0
KA Edwards    7* (8b 1x4)      P Kumar    2-0-7-0

4.1

Kumar to Edwards, no run, Praveen keeps it fuller than Munaf, draws the batsman forward into a defensive push.

4.2

Kumar to Edwards, 1 run, nicely clipped, though he left it for the very last moment as Praveen got this to hold its line and home in towards the front pad.

Vineet: "Easy drop by Rohit Sharma. Who in the current team can fill in to Sachin, Sehwag or Gambhir's shoes at Slips? I have a feeling several chinks in the Indian armour are going to be exposed in this series."

4.3

Kumar to Simmons, no run, back of a length on off stump, Simmons jumps behind the line and defends with a flourish. Very reminiscent of Sherwin Campbell.

4.4

Kumar to Simmons, no run, again on off stump, Simmons opens the face and he moves into another defensive push.

4.5

Kumar to Simmons, no run, hmm, risky from Simmons, he shuffles all the way across to off stump and looks to work Praveen around towards midwicket. If he'd closed the face any later, that would have hit the pad.

Teja: "Leave about excuses for offices. Spare a thought about the school going kids and teens. Even though they had 'paranormal activity' excuse for convincing teachers, how about convincing parents to leave them awake till the end of the match?" My commiserations.

4.6

Kumar to Simmons, no run, another good over from Praveen, gets this one to angle in towards the pads from short of a length and Simmons nudges towards midwicket.

End of over 5 (1 run) West Indies 21/0 (RR: 4.20)
LMP Simmons    5* (20b 1x4)      P Kumar    3-0-8-0
KA Edwards    8* (10b 1x4)      MM Patel    2-1-12-0

5.1

MM Patel to Edwards, no run, not much movement in the last couple of overs, Munaf gets another one to come through straight towards leg stump and it is played to the leg side cautiously.

5.2

MM Patel to Edwards, no run, moves the line to a foot outside off, and again nothing for the drive. Edwards drives into the covers without moving his feet towards the ball.

5.3

MM Patel to Edwards, 1 run, too straight this time from Munaf, and Edwards works it backward of square leg for a single.

5.4

MM Patel to Simmons, no run, Munaf cuts one in off the seam, and it has Simmons in some strife as he gets the front pad far too much across. No damage done though, he negotiates it after taking the top hand off.

5.5

MM Patel to Simmons, 1 run, tight single, Simmons reaches out and plays a length ball into the covers and scurries through.

5.6

MM Patel to Edwards, no run, length fare at 84 mph, moving this way and that. This time it comes in off the seam, and Edwards forces it towards midwicket.

End of over 6 (2 runs) West Indies 23/0 (RR: 3.83)
KA Edwards    9* (14b 1x4)      MM Patel    3-1-14-0
LMP Simmons    6* (22b 1x4)      P Kumar    3-0-8-0

6.1

Kumar to Simmons, OUT, horror shot from Simmons, he has combusted with an ugly-looking top-edge that's ended in mid-off's hands. He had decided early that he was advancing down the track, and Praveen had enough time to see him and drop it short. Simmons then threw his hands at an attempted pull, though he was in no position for it. It took the top-edge and looped into Harbhajan's hands.

LMP Simmons c Harbhajan Singh b Kumar 6 (25m 23b 1x4 0x6) SR: 26.08

Darode: "West Indies tour still reminds me of Abey Kuruvilla. For the first time we had a bowler whose physique looked like those bowlers in West Indies or Australia. I was dying to see him run in and bowl fast -- but all the went out of the window with Kuruvilla's awkward action and delivery of the ball. Can't forget that disappointment. " Sentiment shared. Kuruvilla had it all - the height, the white wrist bands... And bowled at 125 kph.

Darren Bravo is the new man in. Praveen runs in round the wicket with a slip in place.

6.2

Kumar to DM Bravo, no run, angles in from slightly wide of the crease, Darren gets forward and drives into the covers.

Back over the wicket now, with two slips.

6.3

Kumar to DM Bravo, no run, angles away from Darren, lands on middle and off, and holds its line. He lets it go.

6.4

Kumar to DM Bravo, no run, similar ball, Darren flourishes the feet back and across the way that other legend from Trinidad used to, and then leaves.

6.5

Kumar to DM Bravo, no run, fuller this time, and wider outside off, Darren Bravo lets it go again.

6.6

Kumar to DM Bravo, no run, gets him to play this time, with a full ball on middle and off, and Darren Bravo check-drives into the covers where Dhawan dives to stop.

End of over 7 (wicket maiden) West Indies 23/1 (RR: 3.28)
DM Bravo    0* (5b)      P Kumar    4-1-8-1
KA Edwards    9* (14b 1x4)      MM Patel    3-1-14-0

7.1

MM Patel to Edwards, no run, Munaf keeps bending them in from a foot wide of the stumps, and Edwards works it to the leg side after moving across.

7.2

MM Patel to Edwards, 1 run, too straight, Edwards easily steps inside the line and whips backward of square for a single.

7.3

MM Patel to DM Bravo, FOUR, the disdain. Short and wide from Munaf, enough room for Bravo to play a Lara special. He gets back and across, rides the bounce and smashes the square cut through point.

7.4

MM Patel to DM Bravo, no run, strong response from Munaf, gets one to swerve sharply away from Bravo. The length was better too, it was not there for the cut, and Bravo just threw his bat at it without moving into line.

7.5

MM Patel to DM Bravo, OUT, and gone. Munaf has nailed Darren Bravo with another nagging ball, short of driving length outside off. Poor shot from Darren Bravo, again he doesn't move forward or back and just throws the bat hard at it. The ball bounds off the outside edge, to Rohit at the lone widish slip and he takes it really well as it flies towards his head. He takes it with the fingers pointing up, even as he falls back.

DM Bravo c Sharma b MM Patel 4 (6m 8b 1x4 0x6) SR: 50.00

Sarwan is in at No. 4. Crisis to be handled. This guy loves the Indian attack.

7.6

MM Patel to Sarwan, FOUR, Ronnie is away, with a spanking shot. Have been watching Munaf for a while now, and his post-wicket balls tend to be loose. Another example here - short and wide outside off, Sarwan stays beside the line and cracks a resounding cut through cover-point.

Dhinesh: "I think Virat should stand in slips in ODIs for the fast bowlers also. Already he has taken some excellent catches standing for Harbhajan. Although, he is excellent in inner ring, we have to think for long term. He might also take up Rahul Dravid's position not only in the batting order but his field position also."

End of over 8 (9 runs) West Indies 32/2 (RR: 4.00)
RR Sarwan    4* (1b 1x4)      MM Patel    4-1-23-1
KA Edwards    10* (16b 1x4)      P Kumar    4-1-8-1

8.1

Kumar to Edwards, no run, Edwards again gets the front pad dangerously across the stumps and works a length ball towards midwicket.

8.2

Kumar to Edwards, no run, tight single taken, late response from Sarwan. Edwards drives hard to mid-off and takes off and the throw goes to the keeper's end. Sarwan makes it.

Two slips for Sarwan.

8.3

Kumar to Edwards, 1 run, back of a length from Praveen, and away movement off the seam. Sarwan stays on the crease and shoulders arms.

8.4

Kumar to Sarwan, no run, closer to off stump and fuller too, at 78 mph. Sarwan eases into the defensive check-drive into the covers.

8.5

Kumar to Sarwan, no run, back of a length outside off, and the ball stays low for the first time today. Sarwan lets it go.

8.6

Kumar to Sarwan, no run

End of over 9 (1 run) West Indies 33/2 (RR: 3.66)
RR Sarwan    4* (4b 1x4)      P Kumar    5-1-9-1
KA Edwards    11* (19b 1x4)      MM Patel    4-1-23-1

Still no bowling change. Here's Munaf again.

9.1

MM Patel to Edwards, no run, short of a length ball angling in from outside off, and Edwards works it off the back foot to midwicket

9.2

MM Patel to Edwards, 1 run, another one on the pads, Edwards shuffles across and glances it backward of square for one.

9.3

MM Patel to Sarwan, no run, better line, around off and middle and still back of a length. Sarwan defends compactly.

9.4

MM Patel to Sarwan, no run, defensive again from Sarwan, opens the face and plays him into the covers.

9.5

MM Patel to Sarwan, 1 leg bye, Munaf goes too straight again, Sarwan fends it away off the hips without much conviction, and the ball pops away off the pads, close in on the leg side, allowing a single.

9.6

MM Patel to Edwards, 1 run, Edwards again motions across the stumps and whips through square leg for a single. Sedate start, at the end of the Mandatory Powerplay.

End of over 10 (3 runs) West Indies 36/2 (RR: 3.60)
KA Edwards    13* (22b 1x4)      MM Patel    5-1-25-1
RR Sarwan    4* (7b 1x4)      P Kumar    5-1-9-1

Bowling Powerplay taken and here comes Amit Mishra for some leggies. Slip in place.

10.1

Mishra to Edwards, no run, flat ball to start off, straightens from middle and leg and it is defended.

10.2

Mishra to Edwards, no run, more air this time and a hint of turn, Edward defends cautiously

10.3

Mishra to Edwards, no run, tossed up well up on middle stump, and Edward defends again

10.4

Mishra to Edwards, no run, good start from Mishra, four balls on the right lengths, and Edwards again reaches to the pitch and defends.

10.5

Mishra to Edwards, no run, flighted on middle and again spinning away from Edwards who defends.

10.6

Mishra to Edwards, no run, maiden from Mishra. Flighted, almost over-pitched on the pads, but Edwards lets him get away with it, turning it straight to midwicket.

Prashant: "That spanking shot from Sarwan might have reminded Munaf of 5 fours in an over he suffered some years back in Windies. But this is completely different Munaf. I think he will hold on well and nail Sarwan some time later." Yeah, I remember that from the 2006 tour. That Munaf was some 10 kph faster.

End of over 11 (maiden) West Indies 36/2 (RR: 3.27)
KA Edwards    13* (28b 1x4)      A Mishra    1-1-0-0
RR Sarwan    4* (7b 1x4)      MM Patel    5-1-25-1

11.1

MM Patel to Sarwan, no run, short and wide again from Munaf to Ronnie, this time Sarwan finds point with the cut.

11.2

MM Patel to Sarwan, 1 run, lands this closer to the line of off stump and Sarwan looks to chop despite not having the room. Gets a single towards third man.

11.3

MM Patel to Edwards, 1 run, nervy single, but Edwards gets away with it. Edwards again moves across the stumps and works Munaf to midwicket where a diving effort is fumbled. The ball is parried to Mishra at mid-on who swoops in and tries to under-arm the stumps at the bowler's end, but the real trouble was at Sarwan's end.

11.4

MM Patel to Sarwan, 1 run, Sarwan stays beside the line to a slower ball at 115 kph outside off and guides it down to third man.

11.5

MM Patel to Edwards, no run, on off stump and holding its line, Edwards stays on the crease and defends down the track.

11.6

MM Patel to Edwards, no run, fullish ball to finish off, on the stumps and Edwards drives it hard but straight to mid-on.

End of over 12 (3 runs) West Indies 39/2 (RR: 3.25)
KA Edwards    14* (31b 1x4)      MM Patel    6-1-28-1
RR Sarwan    6* (10b 1x4)      A Mishra    1-1-0-0

12.1

Mishra to Sarwan, no run, another dot ball for Mishra, this time Sarwan looks to work him against the spin towards midwicket.

12.2

Mishra to Sarwan, no run, flat ball, seemed to skid on towards Sarwan who defended with bat and pad close together as he reached out.

12.3

Mishra to Sarwan, no run, lands this well outside leg and gets it to turn in, Sarwan works it against the spin backward of square. Still no run.

12.4

Mishra to Sarwan, no run, generous flight and ample turn away from Sarwan, who tries to cut but finds point.

12.5

Mishra to Sarwan, no run, nicely played, Sarwan leans into a cover drive and times it well but Raina dives to refuse the single.

12.6

Mishra to Sarwan, 1 no ball, aha, he over-steps as he tries to send in a skidder, and Sarwan is troubled a little as he defends from the crease.

Free-hit time ...

12.6

Mishra to Sarwan, 1 run, Sarwan looks to boom him over the covers, but finds the man sweeping in the deep. Only a single taken.

End of over 13 (2 runs) West Indies 41/2 (RR: 3.15)
RR Sarwan    7* (17b 1x4)      A Mishra    2-1-2-0
KA Edwards    14* (31b 1x4)      MM Patel    6-1-28-1

Praveen comes on to replace Munaf.

13.1

Kumar to Sarwan, 1 run, legcutter outside off, Sarwan walks into a check drive, and pinches a single

13.2

Kumar to Edwards, 1 run, on Edwards' pads, and he has looked content to keep nurdling singles with wristy whips through midwicket. Here's another.

13.3

Kumar to Sarwan, no run, outside Sarwan's off stump and he drives into the covers without much timing.

Ron: "Good start for Raina as a captain, he did not forget to take powerplay this time!" Ha!

13.4

Kumar to Sarwan, 1 run, on the pads this time, Sarwan nudges to square leg for an easy single.

13.5

Kumar to Edwards, 1 run, short of a length outside off, footwork is an alien concept to Edwards, who stays on the crease and swats it like a fly towards mid-off for a single.

13.6

Kumar to Sarwan, 1 run, slow legcutter, lands on middle and straightens, but Sarwan is wary to turn the face at the right instant and get a single backward of square leg.

End of over 14 (5 runs) West Indies 46/2 (RR: 3.28)

Harbhajan comes on now.

Ashok: "Hope Munaf & Amit does not fight here like during the Mumbai & Hyderabad IPL match."

Round the wicket to Edwards. Slip and leg-slip in place.

14.4

Harbhajan Singh to Edwards, 1 run, dropped by Parthiv, and then by Badri. Harbhajan lands this well outside leg, and Edward nicks the flick onto Parthiv's pad, who fails to hold on. It deflects and flies towards Badri at leg slip, who also can't pouch it.

Back over the wicket.

14.5

Harbhajan Singh to Sarwan, 1 run, tossed up on off, Sarwan stays behind the line and defends.

14.6

Harbhajan Singh to Edwards, no run, Sarwan looks to work a flighted offbreak from outside off, and ends up playing all over it.

Change of ends for Mishra.

15.1

Mishra to Sarwan, no run, nice delivery this, again a back of driving length legbreak that hits Sarwan's pad after spinning lesser than he anticipated.

15.2

Mishra to Sarwan, no run, this one is too wide outside off, Sarwan lets it go.

15.3

Mishra to Sarwan, no run, nervous times for the Windies. Has Parthiv fluffed a stumping here? Mishra lulls Sarwan out with a classic legbreak, that loops in and goes away. Parthiv fails to collect as Sarwan's back foot comes out for a moment as he over-balances.

15.4

Mishra to Sarwan, FOUR, top shot, there was less-room there than a studio apartment in Hong Kong, but Sarwan managed to cut it with some power through backward point.

15.5

Mishra to Sarwan, 1 run, flight this time well outside off, Sarwan leans into a flowing drive and gets it past Raina's diving effort in the covers.

15.6

Mishra to Edwards, no run, Edwards gets a very full ball outside off, and drives it hard straight to mid-off.

End of over 16 (5 runs) West Indies 54/2 (RR: 3.37)

16.1

Harbhajan Singh to Sarwan, no run, Harbhajan tosses the first ball after drinks on off and Sarwan works it around to midwicket.

16.2

16.3

Harbhajan Singh to Edwards, 1 run, short of a length this time, Edwards stays back and works it to midwicket for a single.

16.4

Harbhajan Singh to Sarwan, no run, worked off the pads to midwicket.

16.5

Harbhajan Singh to Sarwan, no run, huge appeal from Harbhajan who tosses it up on off and gets Sarwan into a tangle as he looks to flick. Was hitting outside the line by the looks of it.

16.6

Harbhajan Singh to Sarwan, no run, nice ball to end the over, Harbhajan looks to bring leg slip into play and Sarwan nearly plays into the trap.

End of over 17 (2 runs) West Indies 56/2 (RR: 3.29)

17.1

Mishra to Edwards, 2 runs, googly from Mishra, spinquisition of sorts this for the Windies. Edwards looks to cut and chops an inside edge past the stumps towards fine leg.

17.2

Mishra to Edwards, no run, and a lovely loopy legbreak to follow it up, Edwards is sucked into a front foot, work off the pads and gets a leading edge that almost carries into the covers.

17.3

Mishra to Edwards, no run, another legbreak, nice flight, and Edwards is wary of the variations. He's trying to pick him off the pitch.

17.4

DJ Bravo    6* (3b)      MM Patel    8-1-41-2

39.1

MM Patel to Samuels, no run, over-pitched by Munaf and Samuels smashes it right back. Munaf non-chalantly puts a boot out to stop it. On another day, his ankle would have been shattered to smithereens.

39.2

MM Patel to Samuels, no run, another fuller length ball, Samuels leans out to work it to the leg side, but can't get it away.

39.3

MM Patel to Samuels, 1 run, over-pitched outside off, Samuels thumps it through the covers and Praveen does well to dive and stop. It would have been a sure four if it had got past him.

39.4

MM Patel to DJ Bravo, 1 run, slower ball at 68 mph, short and wide outside off and cut away without timing.

39.5

MM Patel to Samuels, 2 runs, another slower ball, but Munaf again drops it short. Samuels heaves the pull away to the deep, and Harbhajan at deep midwicket does well to save the boundary.

39.6

MM Patel to Samuels, 2 runs, over-pitched this time, and Samuels indulges in some typical Caribbean flair as he drives with a flourish inside-out. The fielder at extra cover manages to keep it in, but they get two more.

End of over 40 (6 runs) West Indies 156/4 (RR: 3.90)

Harbhajan round the wicket.

40.1

Harbhajan Singh to DJ Bravo, no run, straightens from middle and leg, Bravo defends down the track

40.2

Harbhajan Singh to DJ Bravo, no run, on the pads this time, and nudged with the turn to midwicket.

40.3

Harbhajan Singh to DJ Bravo, 1 run, Harbhajan fires it in full on leg stump and Bravo bunts to long-on for a single.

Ah well. Munaf's ankle is sore and getting some treatment, after that effort in the last over.

40.4

Harbhajan Singh to Samuels, 1 run, short of a length and turning into the pads, Samuels eases it into the midwicket area.,

40.5

Harbhajan Singh to DJ Bravo, 1 run, pathetic running from Samuels. Full ball on the pads, bravo whips with soft hands and there was two in that all the time. Bravo realised it late, and Samuels never did.

40.6

Harbhajan Singh to Samuels, no run, another dot ball to end the over, Harbhajan keeps it flat on middle and leg, and forces him to push it back down the track.

End of over 41 (3 runs) West Indies 159/4 (RR: 3.87)
MN Samuels    47* (70b 3x4 1x6)      Harbhajan Singh    8-0-22-1

Mishra comes into the attack.

41.1

Mishra to DJ Bravo, no run, tossed up on off, and Bravo leans out to push it towards cover. More intent please!

41.2

Mishra to DJ Bravo, SIX, here comes the intent! Bravo reaches out to a flighted ball, gets under it and sends it rocketing into the region behind the midwicket fence. Clean swing, and that will make Mishra rethink his length in the end overs.

41.3

Mishra to DJ Bravo, 1 run, he produces a googly now outside off, and gets Bravo to cut, and the inside edge scatters towards short fine leg for a single

41.4

Mishra to Samuels, SIX, shot of the innings from Marlon. He has sashayed down the pitch, into a loopy ball on middle and leg and just charmed it over long-on. No violence in that shot, just a nice fluid motion that began with the feet and ended with those smooth hands. Nice way to reach 50.

41.5

Mishra to Samuels, no run, Mishra wisely keeps it flat, and Samuels pushes it into the off side as he is cramped to cut.

41.6

Mishra to Samuels, 1 run, another flat ball on middle and off, Samuels gets it away towards midwicket for a single. End of the Powerplay, and West Indies will be happy with what they got out of it. Eight more overs to go.

End of over 42 (14 runs) West Indies 173/4 (RR: 4.11)
MN Samuels    54* (73b 3x4 2x6)      A Mishra    9-1-35-0

The field falls back and Raina returns. Kohli was initially asked to bowl, but then Raina took the ball.

42.1

Raina to Samuels, 1 run, flat ball on the pads, worked with the spin through midwicket.

42.2

Raina to DJ Bravo, 2 runs, Bravo jumps back, opens up some room and guides an offbreak through backward point for a couple.

42.3

Raina to DJ Bravo, 1 run, Bravo works him with the turn now, single through wide mid-on.

42.4

Raina to Samuels, OUT, Raina does what he specialises in, producing a huge wicket out of no where. Another wicket goes to an ordinary ball. It was a flat, short, gentle offbreak on middle. Samuels looked to move across and pull it away, but it somehow slipped through off the inside edge, onto his left thing, in between his legs, and clattered the furniture.

MN Samuels b Raina 55 (90m 75b 3x4 2x6) SR: 73.33

Sumukh: "I wonder if there was a case in international cricket when dismissal read "Patel c Patel b Patel"?" That would happen in the Gujarat Premier League. Or if Jeetan Patel and Samit Patel come back into the reckoning, and their teams then play against India.

42.5

Raina to Baugh, 1 run, flighted on off stump, driven against the turn into the wide mid-off area. Baugh is away.

42.6

Raina to DJ Bravo, 1 run, Bravo pushes a single, working Raina with the turn through mid-on.

End of over 43 (6 runs) West Indies 179/5 (RR: 4.16)

Kohli is on now, for his Chris Harris style fare.

43.1

Kohli to DJ Bravo, 1 run, short of a length on leg and straightening, forced from the crease down the ground.

43.2

Kohli to Baugh, 1 run, slower this time, and very full outside off, Baugh leans out and opens the face to steer it to short third man for a single.

43.3

Kohli to DJ Bravo, no run, another nagging legcutter on middle and off, played back to the bowler.

43.4

Kohli to DJ Bravo, 1 run, Bravo works this one off the pads towards midwicket for a single.

43.5

Kohli to Baugh, 2 runs, Baugh works him with soft hands to deep midwicket, and a poor throw from Badri allows him to prance back for the second run.

43.6

Kohli to Baugh, 1 run, over-pitched on the pads, Baugh works him through wide mid-on for one more.

End of over 44 (6 runs) West Indies 185/5 (RR: 4.20)

Vivek: "With Deepak Patel already aged out, I see a case for Patel (C) Patel (B) Patel only if Samit Patel can reduce to half of what he is now. "

Here's Harbhajan. Round the wicket.

44.1

Harbhajan Singh to Baugh, FOUR, super shot from Baugh. Tossed up on middle and straightening in for the lbw, Baugh reverses the grip in a flash and slaps it through third man. Lovely, lovely stroke.

44.2

Harbhajan Singh to Baugh, 1 run, tossed well up on off stump, and Baugh pushes through mid-off for one more.

44.3

Harbhajan Singh to DJ Bravo, no run, the floater dropped short and it hurries through, Bravo defends and forces it away off the outside half.

44.4

Harbhajan Singh to DJ Bravo, 1 wide, horror ball, a foot and a half down the leg side and turning further away. Credit to Parthiv for collecting it.

44.4

Harbhajan Singh to DJ Bravo, no run, better line, it is on middle and leg, and Bravo works it to the leg side.

44.5

Harbhajan Singh to DJ Bravo, OUT, and Harbhajan's got his former Mumbai Indians team-mate. Lovely tossed up delivery on middle stump, and it held it's line. Bravo tried to work it to the leg side, but he wasn't to the pitch of it, and it snapped away past the outside edge even as he over-balanced. Parthiv's day has kept improving, and he collects this nicely and whips the bails off.

44.6

Harbhajan Singh to Sammy, no run, slider to end the over, nervous poke from Sammy as he fails to read the lack of turn and the ball whizzes past the outside edge.

End of over 45 (6 runs) West Indies 191/6 (RR: 4.24)

45.1

Mishra to Baugh, no run, short ball outside off, Baugh cuts but finds point.

45.2

Mishra to Baugh, no run

45.3

Mishra to Baugh, 2 runs, on the pads, Baugh turns it away softly towards midwicket and hares back for a second.

45.4

Mishra to Baugh, no run, loopy ball on off stump, Baugh drives it well, but straight to cover.

45.5

Mishra to Baugh, no run, tossed up again, Baugh defends after covering for the turn.

45.6

Mishra to Baugh, 1 run, Mishra's spell comes to an end as Baugh drives him down towards long-off and settles for a single.

End of over 46 (3 runs) West Indies 194/6 (RR: 4.21)
CS Baugh    13* (12b 1x4)      A Mishra    10-1-38-0

46.1

Harbhajan Singh to Baugh, no run, flat and fierce outside leg, Baugh tries to sweep but can't get bat on it. Rather optimistic lbw appeal, rightly turned down.

46.2

Harbhajan Singh to Baugh, 2 runs, third umpire checks on a direct hit. Baugh gets outside the line and drives Harbhajan against the spin through extra cover. Sammy came back for the second and had to put in a big dive, as the throw came in and shattered the stumps. Sammy's bat was in, but did it bounce in the air after hitting the turf? Looks like it came back down in time.

46.3

Harbhajan Singh to Baugh, no run, very full outside off, Baugh looks to drive away from the body, but doesn't get it away. Parthiv collects and appeals for a catch, Harbhajan joins in the appeal late. The umpire Peter Nero initially says not out, and then chooses to check with his colleague. And they finally decide to go to the third umpire. Well, well. The bat went close to the turf as Baugh swung. No real evidence that the bat hit the ball, or if it hit the pitch. No noise either, other than that of the ball pitching before he played the shot. Has to be not out. Well, they have spent a real long time checking on this. Has the third umpire nodded off? Green light comes on. Celebrations. Time hasn't stopped on us!

46.4

Harbhajan Singh to Baugh, 1 run, and a leading edge now, Baugh doesn't spot the straighter one and turns the face too early. The leading edge pops up and lands behind Harbhajan as he runs back.

46.5

Harbhajan Singh to Sammy, 1 run, Sammy works Harbhajan with the turn towards short fine leg for one more.

46.6

Harbhajan Singh to Baugh, OUT, Harbhajan's got an lbw with the last ball of his spell. He's been appealing for them all day! This was a super-fast delivery fired in flat and straight from round the wicket. Did that land inside the mat? No. Poor decision from umpire Nero. Baugh was hustled into the sweep and missed, but once it pitches outside leg, it can't be out.

CS Baugh lbw b Harbhajan Singh 16 (21m 17b 1x4 0x6) SR: 94.11

Udit: "Did we just see an incident of the umpire not knowing the rules. He can't ask the 3rd umpire if it was an edge. And since it was clearly a clean take, by that logic, it should've been declared out. I'm confused." That's right. Not the right procedure, but the right decision in the end, all the same.

Rampaul is the new man in. Praveen is back on.

47.1

Kumar to Sammy, 1 run, full and wide outside off, Sammy reaches well out to edge it away into the off side for a single.

47.2

Kumar to Rampaul, 2 runs, full toss on off stump, Rampaul drives into the covers and they belatedly decide to take what was an easy second run. 200 up.

47.3

Kumar to Rampaul, 1 leg bye, slowish length ball on the pads, Rampaul gets pad as he tries to whip it away, and gets a leg bye.

47.4

Kumar to Sammy, 2 runs, short and very wide outside off, easy guided carve for Sammy into the covers and this time he comes back for the second.

47.5

Kumar to Sammy, OUT, Praveen's taken Sammy out. You don't get lbws plumber than those. Praveen delivered a low full toss that was headed for the base of middle stump. Sammy got across and tried to work it over to the leg side, and ended up looking like a deer caught in the headlights. Caught palpably in front, and he's walking back now.

DJG Sammy lbw b Kumar 4 (17m 5b 0x4 0x6) SR: 80.00

Bishoo is the new man in. Can hang around like a limpet, but Windies need more than that now.

47.6

Kumar to Bishoo, 1 wide, Praveen slants one too far down the leg side from round the wicket and it is called a wide.

47.6

Kumar to Bishoo, no run, another slow full toss on off stump, Bishoo pushes into the covers for a single.

Saurabh: "What is the run out rule? It should be considered in once the bat remains inside the line and atleast touches the ground once... do we run out someone if he suddenly decides to jump while staying inside his crease!" Err, since when did logic and the laws of cricket go together? Though, you have got me wondering now, why people jump needlessly when they are in the crease!

Raina comes on now.

48.1

Raina to Rampaul, no run, full on off stump from round the wicket, Rampaul pushes into the off side

48.2

Raina to Rampaul, no run, flatter and faster, Rampaul goes back and tries to force it into the off side, but Raina cleans up.

48.3

Raina to Rampaul, 1 run, Rampaul gets him away finally, heaving a single towards deep backward square leg.

48.4

Raina to Bishoo, no run, flat ball on the pads, Bishoo gets a leading edge back towards Raina.

48.5

Raina to Bishoo, no run, on the pads, Windies have sputtered to a hopeless finish here. Bishoo chips him straight to midwicket.

48.6

Raina to Bishoo, OUT, and gone. Fired in full and on the stumps, Bishoo goes for a reverse-sweep and misses. Another easy lbw call. Or is it? The ball was not entirely inside the mat, but it was still a fair call from the umpire. Hitting off stump.

Shreekanth: "What is wrong with the commentators? That ball was going to hit the stumps(Baugh dismissal) the angle is important along with the line." Err.. Welcome to the rules of cricket. The ICC website is a good place to start.

Praveen to finish off.

49.1

Kumar to Rampaul, 1 run, full ball angling in towards the pads, and Rampaul works it through midwicket for a single.

49.2

Kumar to Martin, 1 run, full ball on middle stump, and Martin plays it with the kind of cautious flourish you expect of a tail-ender. Single to mid-on.

49.3

Kumar to Rampaul, 1 run, very full on Rampaul's pads, and flicked through midwicket for one more.

49.4

Kumar to Martin, no run, legcutter at 102 kph, Martin doesn't look like he can pick it, and misses it by a long way as it bounces twice on the way to Parthiv.

49.5

Kumar to Martin, 1 run, even slower, short ball that comes a year after Martin played the pull, and it pops away for a single.

49.6

Kumar to Rampaul, FOUR, Praveen finishes with a ball too slow even for slower balls. Rampaul waited and waited, and still ended up slugging it too early and hence too high, straight back. Dhawan at widish long-on did well to cover a lot of ground to his right and get there, but ended up spilling it. West Indies finish with a four.

Despite two batsmen getting well in, West Indies finish with a poor score. They really need to find a way to deal with quality spin. India need 215 to win, and we will be here again to take you through the chase, which should begin at 1310 local time, ie 2240 IST. See you on the other side of the lunch break.
