India in West Indies ODI Series - 3rd ODI

West Indies v India

India won by 3 wickets (with 22 balls remaining)

Praveen Kumar to open, Simmons to face ...

8.56 am "Are these early starts something to do with TV audiences in India?" asks Phil. That would be, yes, in my opinion that is.

Lots of questions about why Vijay, Ashwin and Ishant aren't playing. India don't have a need to change their winning XI, unless they want to give people a chance. And that's their call.

8.45 am On Ten Sports, Jeff Dujon reckons the pitch will be a little two-paced early on. He doesn't think it will be quick at all, expects it to be slow. Slow bounce, slow turn. Slow. There are cracks on it. No grass.

Mohamed: "Hello every one." Hello Mohamed.

Kris: "Any hope to see Gayle in the stands today?" I'm not sure he's in Antigua at the moment. And even if he was, I'd be willing to bet he's no where near the ground this early in the morning!

Denish: "@kris: why were you hoping to see the gayle in stands...when the real fun is to see him on the pitch and the balls to be in stands. Isn't it?"

Stark: "Can someone please, please tell me why Pollard is playing!!!! My head exploded with questions, as to why the minnow basher had been included." Agree completely, and to think I once was a fan of his ...

Daryl: "Hopes the West Indies can give a good fight or else losing sleep all the way in China for nothing is becoming quite moronic ..."

Toss, 8.30 am Suresh Raina's won it, and India will bowl, a decision probably influenced by a juicier pitch and an early start. They've also both games chasing so far, so no reason to change a winning strategy.

West Indies are playing the debutant Danza Hyatt, so Darren Bravo misses out again. Andre Russell and Kemar Roach replace Dwayne Bravo and Ravi Rampaul, who were rested. India are fielding the same XI from the first and second ODIs.

Early-bird emailer of the day is Vrij: "Lets hope the Windies manage to play one-tenth as well as the fellow who gave the ground his name!"

8.15 am Hello and welcome to ESPNcricinfo's ball-by-ball coverage of the third ODI between West Indies and India, being played at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua. It's frightfully early in Antigua, far too early for cricket to begin after Friday night! Toss at 8.30 am. The captains would have just finished breakfast.

India lead 2-0 at present. Another Indian win will give the last two games dead-rubber status. West Indies are in the proverbial last-chance saloon. Early weather reports from the ground is that the skies are clear.

The pitch in Antigua is expected to have more pace and bounce than the turner in Trinidad did. If that's the case, West Indies will be glad to finally have some home advantage. India have loved these pitches so far.

1.1

MM Patel to Edwards, no run, and bowls a perfectly-pitched delivery to Kirk Edwards, beaten comprehensively outside off stump

1.2

MM Patel to Edwards, OUT, caught behind! Edwards nicks this to Parthiv, who takes a low catch, and there's a bit of a delay before umpire Ian Gould raises the finger. Perfect length once again just outside off, Edwards pushed forward at it, playing away from his body, sizeable edge, tame dismissal

Well West Indies in early strife. What's new? Sarwan is the new batsman, I hope his breakfast has settled down.

Two slips in place ...

2.1

Kumar to Simmons, no run, good length with movement away from Simmons, who lets the ball go

Sarwan takes guard after hammering the bail into his crease to mark his spot ...

2.4

Kumar to Sarwan, no run, once again Praveen bowls extremely wide outside off, and this too hasn't been called. Praveen's lucky

2.5

Kumar to Sarwan, no run, closer to the batsman outside off, that away movement is still there, Sarwan lets it go, the carry isn't good to Parthiv, bounces before him

2.6

Kumar to Sarwan, no run, left alone once again outside off

Anant: "I don't understand why WICB won't let Gayle play. He's a quality player, he'll make WI a more competitive side. It's unfair on the crowd. And if Gayle plays, then that attracts more people to the game leading to more money made, and bigger crowds, and better quality cricket."

Kumar to Sarwan, no run, Praveen's flirting with that line outside off, extremely wide again, but the umpire reckons it's just inside that tram line

4.6

Kumar to Sarwan, no run, this one is shorter and straighter, catches Sarwan on the back foot and the outside edge drops short of gully

End of over 5 (2 runs) West Indies 10/1 (RR: 2.00)
RR Sarwan    2* (13b)      P Kumar    3-1-3-0
LMP Simmons    7* (15b 1x4)      MM Patel    2-0-7-1

5.2

MM Patel to Simmons, no run, Simmons presses forward and outside off to defend towards cover

5.3

MM Patel to Simmons, FOUR, short ball and Simmons attempts to pull and makes rather awkward contact, turning his head away as the ball hit bat, he managed to clear the in field though and the ball trickled to the boundary

5.4

MM Patel to Simmons, SIX, there's no awkwardness about this! Simmons lines up a length delivery and lofts it with a wonderfully straight bat over long-on, first six of the day, Simmons needs to carry on for long today, that's his failing, looks so good at the start and gives it away after 40-50

6.2

Kumar to Sarwan, no run, Sarwan stays in his crease, moves across, and plays towards mid-on

6.3

Kumar to Sarwan, no run, defended from the crease towards the bowler

7.5

MM Patel to Simmons, no run, good length in that channel outside off stump, played towards short cover

7.6

MM Patel to Simmons, FOUR, shot! Simmons presses forward, and towards the off to pull a short ball from outside off over midwicket, the pace on this surface is far too slow to bowl that length

"It's a bit too slow for my liking," says Ambrose on Line and Length. He'd have been good on it though.

Sam: "lol at the empty stadium. Someone please enlighten me as to what the problem is here: early start time? expensive tickets? lack of local interest because the team is mediocre? Harbhajan Singh to Simmons, no run, played towards point

14.4

Harbhajan Singh to Simmons, no run, Simmons moves forward and flicks the ball towards midwicket

14.5

Harbhajan Singh to Simmons, OUT, Sarwan could be in big trouble here! He is, he's gone, run out! Simmons called Sarwan for a quick single after playing the ball towards short square leg. Sarwan isn't a quick runner and he was slow while setting off. The fielder from midwicket swooped on the ball, picked it up with one hand and threw it back to Parthiv. As Sarwan attempted to slide his bat, it got stuck in the ground and he dropped it. Once that happened, he had no chance. He might have been out even if he had his bat. He was looking so fluent, big blow for West Indies

12.26: Have West Indies got enough? I don't think so. India have chased totals of this size at a canter in the first two games. Having said that, West Indies will be relieved. They could have been bowled out for a miserable total after being reduced to 96 for 7. They've got 225 instead. A pitiful performance from all of the top-order batsmen, save Simmons. And then Russell scored 92 off 64 balls. He will be pumped after that performance. Perhaps the West Indies will be pumped. The chase will resume at 13.15 ... Abhishek Purohit will bring it to you. Cheers.
