India tour of West Indies, 4th ODI: West Indies v India at North Sound, Jun 13, 2011
West Indies won by 103 runs

Praveen Kumar will open the bowling, from over the wicket. Lendl Simmons to face, Danza Hyatt is his partner. Hyatt made a duck on debut in the previous ODI, he has another opportunity today.

8.55 am We'll postpone the discussion of who will open with Parthiv until India actually get to bat. We could discuss how soon that will be though, West Indies' openers will be out soon. Out in the middle I mean.

Anand: "India when back to full strength should send out Raina instead of Dhoni for the toss. He seems to win every toss, while Dhoni loses each time!"

James writes in with an interesting idea. "Following today's Cricinfo piece on Curtly, can we put together a "musical cricketers" (cricketers who play in bands) XI? Curtly to open the bowling with Brett Lee seems a good start. Richie Richardson and Mark Butcher at 3 and 4? Does Swanny play in a band?" AB de Villiers will walk into that team.

8.45 am Bright and sunny in North Sound today. The sort of day you'd expect for cricket in the Caribbean. Hopefully the crowd will come to the cricket, rather than spend the day on Antigua's 365 beaches.

"The TV broadcasters are trying their best to attract viewers in India by starting early but Raina is doing the exact opposite by electing to bowl every time. How are they going to attract viewers when India is bowling?" asks Amrit.

Lee D: "Understandable India is trying to test their bench strength as they are 3-0 up. Not sure why West Indies would do that with resting Bishoo who has been their best bowler. Also no sight of Dwayne returning back."

James: "Can anyone explain why Pollard merits a place in the side, please? Put a spinner on and he turns into Devon Smith without the talent."

Sangita: "Who will open Indian batting with Parthiv? I think, Badrinath should open."

There are a few Badri sympathisers writing in. Here's another. Balaji: "I hope Badrinath spends some time in the middle today, he has worked really hard to get selected. I think for Badri this is the last chance."

Toss, 8.30 am Suresh Raina has won the toss once again. India will bowl. They have made three changes, bringing in R Ashwin, Ishant Sharma and Manoj Tiwary for Harbhajan Singh, Shikhar Dhawan and Munaf Patel. West Indies have made two - Devendra Bishoo and Kirk Edwards are out, Anthony Martin and Darren Bravo are back in.

8.20 am Hello and welcome to ESPNcricinfo's ball-by-ball coverage of the fourth ODI between West Indies and India at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua. The series has been won by India - they lead 3-0 - with two games in hand and they are likely to test their second-bench strength today. The first bench is what won them this series, with several first-choice players resting or injured.

It's a holiday in Antigua today so hopefully we'll get a better crowd who will watch a better West Indian performance. Or is that hoping for too much? The toss is at 08.30 am.

Kumar to Simmons, no run, starts with a delivery on a good length just outside off, Simmons plays from the crease towards mid-off

0.2

Kumar to Simmons, no run, good length once again but the line is wider outside off, Simmons lets it go, the carry through to Parthiv is average

0.3

Kumar to Simmons, no run, fuller length outside off and this time the bounce through to the keeper is low after Simmons strides forward and shoulders arms

0.4

Kumar to Simmons, no run, first appeal of the day as Praveen strikes Simmons' pad with one that comes in, Simmons moved forward and a little across to defend, Praveen was extremely confident, the impact may have been just outside off, that could be the only reason for umpire Gould to give it not out, one inswinger after three that moved away

0.5

Kumar to Simmons, no run, good length with movement away from the right-hander, Simmons lets it go

0.6

Kumar to Simmons, no run, Simmons lets the final ball go as well, so Praveen begins with a maiden over

Varun: "Regarding the Singing XI team and AB. Doesn't AB fit into any team? Soccer, Rugby, Cricket and Even singing!"

Ishant to share the new ball ... Hyatt to face.

1.1

I Sharma to Hyatt, no run, Ishant's first ball of the series is pitched short of a length, Hyatt gets caught on the crease and hit on the glove

1.2

I Sharma to Hyatt, 1 wide, Ishant pitches it short again, Hyatt lets it go, and the umpire's called it wide. That's an odd call, a rather harsh one. Was that wide on height? No, and it was definitely inside the tram line. The pitch is slow though

1.2

I Sharma to Hyatt, no run, fuller ball and Hyatt pushes tentatively at it off the front foot, he gets beaten

1.3

I Sharma to Hyatt, 1 run, Ishant gets the ball to rise on Hyatt from a good length, cramping him for room with the angle into the right-hander, Hyatt fends awkwardly at the ball and it lobs safely in front of square

1.4

I Sharma to Simmons, 1 run, short of a length once again, Simmons stays in his crease and dabs it behind square

Sitanshu: "Talk about singing cricketers - Sanjay Manjeraker apparently sings well. Remember him singing "Ruk Jana Nahin" at some TV show."

1.5

I Sharma to Hyatt, OUT, Hyatt is gone, and he always looked like going. Ishant got the ball to rise again from a good length, Hyatt stayed in his crease and just fended at it. It hit the top half of the outside edge and lobbed tamely towards backward point. A duck on debut and 1 today, a minor improvement at least.

Sarwan is the new batsman, hammering the bail into the crease to mark his guard.

Apologies to Danza Hyatt. He made 1 on debut, and not a duck like I've said twice today. So he matched that effort.

2.1

Kumar to Sarwan, no run, played off the front foot towards midwicket

2.2

Kumar to Sarwan, no run, good length ball on off and middle, Sarwan pushes towards the bowler

2.3

Kumar to Sarwan, no run, Praveen goes past the outside edge of Sarwan's forward push with some late away movement from a good length

2.4

Kumar to Sarwan, no run, Sarwan gets behind the line of a good length delivery and defends

2.5

Kumar to Sarwan, no run, short of a length with more movement away from the right-hander, the ball dies on its way through to Parthiv after Sarwan lets it go

2.6

Kumar to Sarwan, no run, Sarwan covered the movement nicely this time, moving across his crease, angling the bat to play the ball towards cover point. Praveen has completed his second maiden

3.1

I Sharma to Simmons, 1 no ball, Ishant over-steps as he delivers a short of a length ball that Simmons defends from his crease, he won't be defending the upcoming free hit though

3.1

I Sharma to Simmons, 1 wide, the free-hit is a slower ball that's extremely wide outside off stump, he'll have to do that again

3.1

I Sharma to Simmons, 2 runs, Ishant pitches it short and Simmons tries to pull, he gets a top edge that flies over the keeper's head, Rohit gives chase from slip. Ishant's getting some sharp bounce from this pitch.

3.2

I Sharma to Simmons, no run, there's that steep bounce from short of a length on a line just outside off, Simmons jumps up on the back foot to play the ball but then drops his wrists to let it pass

3.3

I Sharma to Simmons, no run, good length outside off Simmons moves back and across to defend on the off side

3.4

I Sharma to Simmons, FOUR, that's the first boundary of the day, Simmons backed away towards leg, Ishant followed him with a short of a length ball, Simmons managed to stay inside the line and pulled it to the backward square leg boundary

3.5

I Sharma to Simmons, no run, defended off the back foot towards the leg side

3.6

I Sharma to Simmons, no run, Simmons plays the square drive from the crease towards point

Ishant was bowling around 137 kph.

4.3

Kumar to Sarwan, no run, good length outside off, Sarwan shoulders arms

4.4

Kumar to Sarwan, no run, Praveen pitches on that driveable length just outside off and asks the batsman to go for it before seaming it away, Sarwan resists and shoulders arms

4.5

Kumar to Sarwan, OUT, caught at point! A tame dismissal. The length was a little shorter and the line a little wider. It seamed away from Sarwan who moved back and cut it. He wasn't able to hit it in the gap or along the ground. Manoj Tiwary barely had to move to catch it.

Darren Bravo is the new batsman.

4.6

5.3

I Sharma to Bravo, 1 run, straighter line from Ishant and Bravo tucks it off his hips towards square leg

5.4

I Sharma to Simmons, no run, short of a length angling into Simmons, cramping him for room, the batsman takes one hand off the bat as he defends

5.5

I Sharma to Simmons, FOUR, Simmons was expecting this, he sat on the back foot, waiting for the short of a length ball, and heaved it over wide long-on for the innings' second boundary

5.6

I Sharma to Simmons, SIX, that is classy! Simmons presses forward to a fuller ball that angles into him and swings freely across the line, lofting the ball over the midwicket boundary. There was smoothness in that shot

6.3

Kumar to Bravo, no run, he's let another one go outside of, Bravo is a patient starter today

6.4

Kumar to Bravo, 1 run, finally the batsman scores a run off Praveen today, Bravo opens the face to guide the ball towards third man, had to reach out to play it though

Ashwin to Pollard, OUT, huge blow for West Indies! Pollard has been caught at long-off. He backed away towards leg to hit through the off, Ashwin bowled a full ball outside leg, denying him room, and Pollard lofted it straight to the fielder on the boundary

KA Pollard c I Sharma b Ashwin 70 (84m 72b 6x4 2x6) SR: 97.22

Pollard's played well though, he needs to string a few such innings together to silence his growing number of critics.

Pollard was setting up for a powerful finish but now it's down to Russell.

44.3

Ashwin to Russell, no run, defended on the front foot towards the leg side

I Sharma to Russell, 1 run, Russel tries to drive from the crease through the off side this time, the ball flies off the edge towards third man

45.4

I Sharma to Baugh, no run, the slower ball bowled short of a length, Baugh swings and is beaten

Chad: "Promote Russell to open with Simmons for the 5th ODI."

47.1

I Sharma to Baugh, 1 run, Baugh is hurried by Ishant's pace as he tries to work the ball on the leg side, think he got some glove on that before it hit his body

Lee: "I'm telling you.. WI should try to open with Andre Russell. Feels like he is another JAYASURIYA in making!"

47.2

I Sharma to Russell, 1 wide, full ball outside off stump, just inside the tram line, Russell was backing away towards leg and hence looked as though the ball was far away from him. Poor call from the umpire

47.5

I Sharma to Baugh, 1 no ball, a slower ball but it's down leg side, it would have been wide but Ishant had over-stepped again so it's a no-ball with a free-hit coming up, his third offence of the day

47.5

I Sharma to Baugh, 2 runs, Baugh swipes at the free-hit and manages to clear mid off, that ball rose on Baugh and made it hard for him to hit cleanly

Srinath: "Or atleast send Russel before Baugh! Would have been awesome to see Pollard and Russel bat together!"

47.6

I Sharma to Baugh, 1 leg bye, Baugh moves towards the off, trying to lift the ball over short fine leg, he misses and is hit on the body, might have been some bat there somewhere

End of over 48 (7 runs) West Indies 240/6 (RR: 5.00)

Kumar to Baugh, OUT, caught at long-on, Baugh charged Praveen and pulled the shorter and slower ball straight to Kohli on the boundary

CS Baugh c Kohli b Kumar 39 (96m 57b 3x4 0x6) SR: 68.42

Could be a blessing in disguise for West Indies. Russell on strike and Sammy at the other end.

48.3

Kumar to Russell, OUT, caught at long-on again! Russell stood in his crease and also swiped at a length ball that was a touch slower. The bat turned in his hand but the ball still carried towards Kohli who took the catch while running to his left

    • KAJ Roach 1 (1b)
    • P Kumar 10-3-37-3

This is West Indies' best score of the season, but can they get 250?

49.1

I Sharma to Roach, no run, Ishant goes past Roach with a speedy short of a length delivery

49.2

I Sharma to Roach, 2 runs, Roach deftly opens the face off the back foot to play the ball towards third man

49.3

I Sharma to Roach, no run, Full ball just outside off stump, Roach drives to straight to cover

49.4

I Sharma to Roach, no run, Roach doesn't know where he is for a moment, Ishant's short ball crashed into his helmet as he tried to hook, looked a bit dazed for a few seconds, he takes off his helmet and he's bleeding near the mouth

The physio's out there attending to the blood. That was a nasty blow to the face. Crunching sound. Ishant will be hoping he doesn't have to bat today.

He's ready to bat again. Another short one coming up?

49.5

I Sharma to Roach, 1 run, oh yes, Ishant digs it in, Roach moves back and across and fends awkwardly, he then sets off for the single. Ishant fields the ball on his follow through and then turns to throw the stumps down at the bowler's end. Roach is a few inches short but I didn't hear any strong appeals. Umpire Malcolm doesn't refer it as a result. Surely someone appealed? Harbhajan Singh signals frantically from the dressing room saying it's out but it's too late ..the game moves on ...

49.6

I Sharma to Sammy, 4 leg byes, Sammy tries to play the glance but can't make contact, the ball hits his pad though and goes to fine leg for four

12.45 Well West Indies have made their best score of the season. So a definite improvement from disappointments past. Simmons was good without being outstanding, and Pollard finally made a contribution but then got out when West Indies needed an explosive finish. Russell once again impressed during his short stay. And I think Baugh punched above his height weight. Praveen was India's best bowler by far and Ashwin impressed in his first game of the series. Ishant bowled with pace and bounce on a slow surface, which was good to watch, but conceded far too many extras. He's still not over his no-ball malaise.

Once again I don't think this will be enough to beat India but I'm hoping it is. I've had enough of Groundhog Day. Abhishek Purohit will bring you the second innings, that's it from me tonight, cheers and enjoy the rest of the game.

End of over 50 (7 runs) West Indies 249/8
