India tour of West Indies and United States of America, 3rd Test: West Indies v India at Gros Islet, Aug 9-13, 2016
India won by 237 runs
9,10,11,12,13 August 2016 (5-day match)
  • Overs 1-50
  • Overs 51-100
  • Overs 101-150

9.58am Rahul and Dhawan walk out to open, again. Kohli is padded up, sipping a beverage perhaps in the change room. Gabriel is armed with the new ball from the Media End. He will be backed up by three slips and a gully. No mid-on, midwicket there to add to a short backward square leg

9.50am Your Shots: A game of cricket in St Lucia almost as intense as the one that's about to start.

"There is talk of St Lucia boycotting the Test because of Sammy's sacking as T20 captain," Karthik Krishnaswamy says from the ground. "Stands are empty, though it's hard to say it's because of the boycott, since it's been the same story right through the series."

Rajeesh Kankol: "Kohli says "Everybody needs to get chances", that should be highlighted. If you are trying to reach on top rank, you must have a set of reserve players. Excellent attitude from kohli, his predecessor Dhoni was a big fan of unchanging eleven."

Sarvesh: "Is Vijay rested as a precautionary measure or dropped?" --- Kohli did not reason it out at the toss. He did so for Rohit's entry

Hari: "Pitch with Movement - Pujara should have played instead of Rohit. Lets see how he fares."

Sushil: "People are being too critical about Rohit. He has an exceptional record against WI across formats and deserves one game at least."

swami: "On a Pitch that offers early movement, batting first with 5 batsmen and no Vijay and no Pujara...??? Massive call mate.. This is the last opportunity for Rohit to seal his test spot."

9.30pm West Indies win the toss choose to field.

Jason Holder, West Indies captain: We showed signs of improvement in the last game in Jamaica. Important to continue and make steady progression. We are hoping it can carry over into the bowling as well. It is about adding to the wickets column. Two changes: Fast bowler Alzarri Joseph, 19, makes his debut at the expense of Bishoo and Johnson comes in for Chandrika. The surface will offer something early on.

Big calls from Kohli. No Vijay, No Pujara. Dhawan and Rahul will continue to open, and Rohit gets a look in and has been listed at No.3. There is a chance Vijay may not have recovered completely, though he batted for a long time in the nets yesterday.

Virat Kohli, India captain: I was looking to bat first anyway. We have seen history. The ball carries nicely through to the keeper. We have three changes. Rohit in for Pujara. Jadeja comes in for Mishra and Bhuvneshwar for Umesh. We feel that Rohit has been playing very well. Rohit Sharma can change sessions in a Test match. Taking nothing away from Pujara; he has been solid. Everybody needs to get chances.

WI XI: KC Brathwaite, LR Johnson, DM Bravo, MN Samuels, J Blackwood, RL Chase, SO Dowrich†, JO Holder*, ML Cummins, AS Joseph, ST Gabriel

India XI: S Dhawan, KL Rahul, RG Sharma, V Kohli*, AM Rahane, R Ashwin, WP Saha†, RA Jadeja, I Sharma, Mohammed Shami, B Kumar

Update from Karthik Krishnaswamy, our man at the ground: "A bit of grass, and both teams expect pace and bounce"

Shantanu: "Nobody talking about the other changes to Indian lineup. Bhuvi or Jadeja in place of Mishra maybe? "

9.20am On the other hand, West Indies have simpler choices to make. They have already made one: Leon Johnson who led West Indies Broad Presidents XI in the tour matches v Indians takes Rajendra Chandrika's opening slot. Johnson was the leading run-scorer in WI's domestic first-class season in 2015-16 with 807 runs at 57.64. Under-19 World Cup star Alzarri Joseph or WT20 sensation Carlos Brathwaite is likely to come in on a quicker St Lucia surface.

Raj: "This could b a important test for kohli's captaincy on terms of decision making.. Puj vjay and Rahul should make the cut into the team.. Dhawan has been a sitting duck against quality opposition so he has no place when they are playing a out of form windies!!" --- Dhawan did show improved judgement outside off in the opening Test

Tarang: "I would have a mini heart attack if i find out Rahul and Jadeja not playing " --- Stay calm, my friend....

swapnilsingh: "Any update about Pitch Report?" ---- According to Holder this is "the best cricket pitch in the Caribbean in terms of carry and assistance for the quicker bowlers". Jeff Dujon reckons that the surface will flatten out as the game wears on, although there will always be something for bowlers who are willing to bend their backs

Erica Khandaker: "How does the pitch look like? Is there any possibility that India would play 3 spinners?"

Abhi: "Given Pujara's form it makes more sense to drop him and play all three of Vijay Dhawan and Rahul "

Gagan: "I hope Vijay and Rahul both play..they have done nothing wrong to be left out.. "

Kunal Jog: "R Ashwin the No. 1 test bowler is 11 wickets away from creating a world record for fastest 200 wickets in test matches. Playing against his favourite opposition where he has generally taken a lot of wickets, he is surely capable of achieving the feat in this Match"

Shantanu: "If you score runs against strong opposition like Australia, South Africa and England, you have earned the right to play West Indies and home series. #VijayInDhawanOut"

9.15am Virat Kohli faces selection dilemma at the top, again. M Vijay has recovered from the thumb injury and is set to take his place at the expense of KL Rahul. Has Rahul done enough with his career-best 158? Does it leave Dhawan/Pujara out in the cold (Kohli, though, suggested that Pujara would keep his place at No.3)? Or will Vijay miss the cut?

Our man Karthik Krishnaswamy placed the magnifying glass on India's training session, and explored India's batting selection riddle.

9.10am "Magnificent feeling to be out here at the Darren Sammy Stadium. Respect to Darren Sammy," says Viv Richards. How ironic is that Sammy isn't around in the first international match at the Darren Sammy Stadium since it had been renamed in the honour of West Indies' World T20 winning captain? Sammy has been left out of the squad for the two T20 matches against India in Florida. Carlos Brathwaite (Remember the name?) is the new WI T20 captain.

Talha: "CPL is finished, why the best Caribbean players are still not in the team ? Like Cris Gyle, D Bravo, Pollard, Sunil ..... Are they in strike ? or it's board's decision? " ---- Hmm

Deep: "How has the weather been holding up?" --- It looks nice and bright for now, although rain is expected on the first four days of the Test

9am India couldn't quite shut West Indies down in Jamaica, despite deploying a five-bowler attack. They visitors, however, have some tasty incentives in St Lucia and Trinidad. A win in the third Test will sew up the series, and a win in the fourth will ensure the top spot in the ICC Test rankings, irrespective of the results in the Sri Lanka- Australia and England-Pakistan series'. G'day and welcome to ESPNcricinfo's ball-by-ball coverage of the St Lucia Test.

Kautuk : "Can't wait for this match to start. Olympics has been a big disaster, want to see India win atleast something, hopefully this match will be. It. "

Ali Mushaf: "If India wins this, will they be world # 1 even if Pakistan or Australia win their matches?" --- India will have to win the series 3-0 irrespective of what happens in the concurrent series.

8.50am Who'd have thought of a West Indies rally after they were rolled over by an innings and 92 runs in Antigua? It seemed like they would be rolled over in Jamaica as well, until Blackwood, Chase, and Dowrich lit the fuse and rallied West Indies to an improbable draw, with a bit of help from the Earl. The 64-year old Viv Richards was up on his feet roaring "Roston" with the enthusiasm of a kid. The fans, although not too many, were impressed by the rearguard as well.

Yes, West Indies found the spark in the second Test, but the "raging fire" is still missing. The young team needs more from its top order, more application from the middle order, and more persistence from the seamers. Sid Monga sets up the scene here.

0.1

Gabriel to Rahul, 2 runs, 140kph, loose full toss just a shade outside off, Rahul presses forward and drives it in the gap at the covers. Signs of a slow outfield already

Karthik from the ground: "Open press box here, so a pleasant surprise to hear the sound of bat on ball. Though Rahul didn't exactly time that first shot."

0.2

Gabriel to Rahul, 2 runs, dishes out another full toss angling in from over the wicket, picked away through vacant mid-on

0.3

Gabriel to Rahul, 2 runs, Gabriel manages to pitch this. Overpitched, though, driven through the covers again. Not well-timed, again

0.4

Gabriel to Rahul, no run, Gabriel drags this length back, straightens off the surface and hits Rahul above the knee-roll on the front pad. But this was surely heading down the leg side

0.5

Gabriel to Rahul, no run, 144ks, Gabriel spears it short and outside off. Leaves Rahul in the channel as he hangs his bat out and is beaten past the outside edge. Some movement off the pitch

0.6

Gabriel to Rahul, no run, Rahul is beaten in the channel again. Full and tight, largely holds its line outside off. Rahul plays a bit away from the body. Is caught on a fishing expedition

End of over 1 (6 runs) India 6/0

    • KL Rahul 6 (6b)
    • S Dhawan 0 (0b)
    • ST Gabriel 1-0-6-0

Here is Joseph in his ninth first-class match, first Test match.

1.1

Joseph to Dhawan, 1 run, hurled in very full, near yorker-length ball from over the wicket, squeezed down the pitch, past Joseph

1.2

Joseph to Rahul, no run, short and angled into the body of Rahul, 139ks, who fends it out of reach of short leg

1.3

Joseph to Rahul, no run, Joseph runs in hard and gets this full ball to swerve back in. Skidded on and hit the pad above the knee-roll, beating the flick. The tracker shows that it would have bounced over

1.4

Joseph to Rahul, no run, full and pushed outside off, goes on a straight line in the channel, left alone

1.5

Joseph to Rahul, no run, lovely bowling from Joseph. Holder claps and acknowledges the effort. 139ks. Length and swings away a touch, past the outside edge. Rahul wafts and misses again

1.6

Joseph to Rahul, 2 runs, too full and angling into a flick. Rahul picks it away in the air.... to the right of that man at midwicket

2.2

Gabriel to Dhawan, no run, short and straying onto the thigh, he misses out on a scoring opportunity

2.3

Gabriel to Dhawan, OUT, What have you Dhawan? Strangled down the leg side. Gabriel and the cordon go up. As does umpire Llong's finger. They check for a possible no-ball. The quick is okay on that count as well. This was pitched short and harmlessly down the leg side, Dhawan chases and gloves it behind to Dowrich. Knee-high catch. Did not bounce much

S Dhawan c †Dowrich b Gabriel 1 (14m 4b 0x4 0x6) SR: 25.00

Kohli at No.3. Not Rohit

2.6

Gabriel to Rahul, no run, Rahul is not looking comfortable in the middle. Straight shortish ball on off/fourth-stump line. Rahul was caught between playing and leaving. Ends up rolling it off the face to the cordon. Belated decision to waft at that

End of over 3 (1 run) India 10/1

    • KL Rahul 8 (13b)
    • V Kohli 1 (1b)
    • ST Gabriel 2-0-7-1
    • AS Joseph 1-0-3-0
3.1

Joseph to Kohli, no run, Joseph says "hello" to Kohli with a bouncer. Sails over the right shoulder of Kohli who sways his upper body out of the way. Kohli toppled over. The teenage quick has left India's captain on his backside

3.2

Joseph to Kohli, no run, back of a length pitches on a fifth-stump line, forces a weak prod from Kohli. Not much feet movement. Joseph finds movement off the surface and beats the outside edge

3.3

Joseph to Kohli, 2 runs, drop-and-run single to the covers from Kohli. He gets on top of a shortish ball and bunts it, they sneak another one off an overthrow

3.4

Joseph to Kohli, no run, too full and veering down the leg side

3.5

Joseph to Kohli, no run, back of a length, 136ks, holds its line outside off, not close enough to off to draw a stroke from Kohli

3.6

Joseph to Kohli, no run, pitched up and angling in to the off stump, Kohli quells it through point

End of over 4 (2 runs) India 12/1

    • V Kohli 3 (7b)

    • AS Joseph 2-0-5-0
    • ST Gabriel 2-0-7-1

4.2

Gabriel to Rahul, no run, Gabriel goes fuller, cranks it up to 147ks, this one travels along a straight line outside off. The opener does not want to disturb it

4.3

Gabriel to Rahul, 1 no ball, banged in short and angled in towards Rahul, who checks his shot and ends up poking feebly towards slips

4.3

Gabriel to Rahul, no run, Rahul leaves it on bounce. Short and swerves back in to sail over the top of off as Rahul leaves

4.4

Gabriel to Rahul, no run, too full and angled in at off stump, Rahul presses forward and push-drives it back to the bowler

4.5

Gabriel to Rahul, no run, good length and holds its line outside off as Rahul shoulders arms

vivek bhandari: "What're the speeds Joseph is bowling around? I remember he was pretty sharp in the U19 World Cup, way fast per the age group standards" -- Pretty sharp, has touched 140ks a few times

4.6

Gabriel to Rahul, 1 run, another nervous stroke from KL Rahul. Full and simply angling into a straighter line, Rahul does not go for a full-blooded flick. Instead, chips it in the air to the right of short backward square leg

End of over 5 (2 runs) India 14/1

    • KL Rahul 9 (20b)
    • V Kohli 3 (7b)
    • ST Gabriel 3-0-9-1
    • AS Joseph 2-0-5-0
5.1

Joseph to Rahul, FOUR, first boundary of the match. First convincing stroke from Rahul. Full and straying onto the pads, there is the full-blooded flick. Dispatched to the midwicket fence

5.2

Joseph to Rahul, 1 run, full and angled in at off, 136ks, draws an inside edge that rolls square on the leg side

5.3

Joseph to Kohli, OUT, Joseph's first international victim is Kohli. Bounced out. Banged in on a back of a length and swerves in just outside off, 141ks, rears up at Kohli and cramps him for room. He is surprised by the extra lift and looks to fend with hard hands. He checked his shot - cut or punch - and just fended it. An edge flies to Bravo at first slip. He clasps it in front of his head. Opened up and undone by pace and bounce. What a moment for Joseph. Joel Garner, who presented the cap to Joseph, would have been proud of that prancing delivery

End of over 6 (5 runs) India 19/2

    • AM Rahane 0 (3b)
    • KL Rahul 14 (22b 1x4)

6.2

Gabriel to Rahul, 2 runs, back of a length and angling in, worked away behind square, although he was not in control

6.3

Gabriel to Rahul, FOUR, that's serene from Rahul. Takes a very full ball outside off. Goes back and then presses forward to caress it through the covers. Bent-knee drive, finds the cover boundary

6.4

Gabriel to Rahul, 1 run, good length and angling in, jabbed towards short cover. They press on for a single. Chase swoops across on the ball from point. He can't nail a direct hit at the striker's end. Rahane dives and makes it

Deepak: "Now comes the real test for Kohli's 5 bowler strategy !!! But with Jadeja and Bhuvi in the team the tail looks relatively stronger"

6.5

Gabriel to Rahane, no run, 144ks, dug in short and angled into the body of Rahane. Hostile bowling from Gabriel. Rahane throws his gloves in front and fends it reasonably well

This is turning out to be quite a Test for India's batting line-up

6.6

Gabriel to Rahane, 1 run, Rahane sits back, probably expecting more short stuff. This is on a length and straight, dabbed wide of short backward square leg

End of over 7 (8 runs) India 27/2

    • AM Rahane 1 (5b)
    • KL Rahul 21 (26b 2x4)

8.1

Gabriel to Rahul, no run, full on off, Rahul is right behind the line in defence

8.2

8.3

Gabriel to Rahul, no run, another bouncer, seams in, Rahul sways his upper body out of the way again

8.4

Gabriel to Rahul, 3 runs, Rahul now springs forward to a full ball outside off. Overpitched and outside off, driven in the gap at the covers

Observation from Karthik in St Lucia: "The bounce has been steep, but some balls have had tennis-ball bounce. I think that's because of whatever moisture is underneath the surface, and expect the pitch to possibly get a little quicker as the day progresses."

8.5

Gabriel to Rahane, no run, back of a length and angled in, Rahane sits back, shows the full face of the bat, and blocks it back

Cummins is warming up

8.6

Gabriel to Rahane, FOUR, dinky stuff from Rahane. That's one way to deal with the short stuff, though this wasn't that short to pose a threat. Arches his back, takes it from outside off, and ramps it over the top of the cordon. No protection in the deep at third man

End of over 9 (11 runs) India 38/2

    • AM Rahane 5 (13b 1x4)
    • KL Rahul 24 (30b 2x4)
    • ST Gabriel 5-0-24-1

Here's our CPL team of the tournament. Agree with our picks?

10.56pm Lively first hour [or 56 minutes], that. West Indies' mini-session. Both Gabriel and the debutant Joseph tested India with sharp short balls and movement off the surface. Both Dhawan and Kohli fell to shortish balls, Dhawan gloving to the keeper and Kohli fending to slip.

12.05pm: As the players break for lunch, take a look at the local delights our correspondent Karthik Krishnaswamy has chowed down on in Caribbean, in his tour diary.

Noon West Indies' quicks - Gabriel and Joseph, the debutant, - attacked India with short balls on a spicier surface. Dhawan fell to it down the leg side, tickling to Dowrich. Kohli, in at No.3, fended with hard hands to slip. KL Rahul, although not too comfortable, played his shots and reached a fifty, before spooning a catch to short fine leg off Chase to make it West Indies' session. The over rate doesn't look good, though. Rohit and Rahane have a lot of rebuilding work to do after lunch. Ciao in 40 mins.

KP: "Rahul first score of fifty, this... "

Rohit: "Just 23 overs bowled and with 4 pace bowler its very tough to bowl 90 overs in day."

Alla P.: "Good to see Gabriel charging in and bowling Yorkers @145kph- an arsenal which has been absent from W.I. Test fast bowling armoury in recent times! "

12.40pm Hello again. WI's short-ball barrage worked in the first session. The short leg has been in business. Rahane has looked shaky against lifting as well as full balls. And Rohit is only 11-balls old at the crease. Can West Indies pounce on the visitors? Joseph will be India's first challenge after lunch

Dipu: "Have always been a fan of Rohit. He seems to have lot of time to play when he is in his zone...Laxmanisque!!!! hope he will not disappoint me today!!!!"

Ganessin: "Kohli had sent the right message to the players. He is not looking to save test matches by scoring slowly, he wants to score at a brisk rate to give the bowlers enough time to get 20 wickets. Rohit may not be the right person to do it in test but eventually we will get somebody who can do it consistently. May be Pujara can comeback with better SR.

Akbar: "Rohit & Ajinkya will have to show their sheer talent to take India out of the mud they are in. "

Dhruva: "Jealous of Karthik Krishnaswamy's job! Any chances he needs replacing? :)" --- He is irreplaceable :)

Aayush: "Indians having bad time in the field everywhere. Olympics and now this"
