New Zealand in West Indies ODI Series - 1st ODI

West Indies v New Zealand

West Indies won by 9 wickets (with 52 balls remaining) (D/L method)

9.20am Jeff Dujon says there a few cracks in the track, but that it should prove to be a good surface for the batsmen.

Darren Sammy: "There is always early morning moisture here, we want to exploit that. We are looking to start the series. Tino Best and Johnston Charles miss out."

Kane Williamson: "Taylor is still a little sore, Brendon is coming over shortly. The Twenty20s were a disappointing start to the tour, we'd like to think we will put up a better performance in this format."

Lot of hopes place on Kane W, even before his debut. Hugh: "Great to see Williamson getting a go with the captaincy - thought he showed huge guts making that century to save the game against South Africa in the winter; would love to see him kick on now and have a fine career."

9.00am Greetings cricket fans, the sun is shining in Jamaica and we are all set for the first ODI between West Indies and New Zealand. The home side haven't won a bilateral series in four years (excluding Bangladesh and Zimbabwe), but they start this series as overwhelming favourites against a weakened New Zealand side. With Gayle back, and Sunil Narine a handful on home tracks, a huge challenge awaits New Zealand's youngest ODI captain, Kane Williamson.

Toss West Indies won the toss and bowl.

Eddie Filsak sends the first feedback of the day: "After years of decline, it's good to see the Windies in some sort of ascent. True, they got a beating in England, but so have the current world number one. I fully expect to see WI rise up the ODI rankings over the next couple of years. Good times!"

It's the first ODI since Ross Taylor debuted way back in 2006, that New Zealand are without both Taylor and Brendon McCullum. Add the absence of Jesse Ryder, and this New Zealand line-up looks like rather weak. West Indies may have had the best of times in England, but they matched Australia in the home ODI series earlier this year, even without Gayle at the top of the order.

Check this scorecard to see the damage Gayle caused in his last innings in Jamaica.

0.1

Rampaul to Nicol, 1 run, starts with a length ball on the pads, Nicol works it down to fine leg for a single to get New Zealand underway

0.2

Rampaul to Guptill, no run, outside off and that is goes past the outside edge, 130kph, not much movement there

0.3

Rampaul to Guptill, no run, pitched up, 133kph, seems to have got a little bit of extra bounce to take Guptill by surprise, Guptill takes the bottom hand off the bat and defends it to the off side

0.4

Rampaul to Guptill, no run, nice carry through to the keeper, starts well outside off though so no worries for the batsman

0.5

Rampaul to Guptill, no run, length ball is solidly defended off the front foot towards the covers, 'Wait on,' shouts Guptill

0.6

Rampaul to Guptill, 1 run, pushed off the front foot towards extra cover for a single to end the over

First over of the day, and already there is some criticism of Sammy. Anshuman: "@Eddie Filsak: I am agreement with you on this. But the ascend would only happen if in the coming years, Sammy makes way for someone like Russel. Russel is too good a player to be left out for Sammy. With him in the team and the current 10, WI can take on any ranked team in the world."

Talking of Russell, here he comes. Two slips for him

1.1

Russell to Guptill, 1 wide, starts with a leg-side wide

1.1

Russell to Guptill, OUT, talk about immediate impact! length ball jags away and Guptill pokes at it outside off without moving his feet, gets the outside edge and through to Sammy at second slip, taken low and to his right, Guptill is gone for 1

1.6

3.2

Russell to Nicol, no run, Nicol shuffles down the track before Russell bowls, trying to negate the movement Russell is getting, defends this one

3.3

Russell to Nicol, no run, good bounce there for Russell, that starts too wide outside off for Nicol to leave

3.4

Russell to Nicol, 2 runs, shuffles down the track and eases that through cover, it's a tactic Nicol has decided to use to counter the away movement of Russell

Jerome: "I think the weather was a major factor in the West Indies performance in England on each of the last two tours. Last time England were in the Caribbean they did not run away with it, in fact we beat them in the test and could have won the one-dayers. Caribbean people do not do well in cold weather."

3.5

Russell to Nicol, 1 wide, sprays that down the leg side for his third wide of the day

3.5

Russell to Nicol, no run, short of length and just outside off, 136kph, blocked off the back foot towards point

5.5

Russell to Flynn, no run, length ball around off, blocked to the off side from the crease

5.6

Russell to Flynn, FOUR, that should give him plenty of confidence, short of length and that is played with a straight bat down the ground, a lofted drive between the bowler and mid-off fetches him a boundary, more of the straight bat will serve him well here

End of over 6 (5 runs) New Zealand 20/1

7.1

Russell to Flynn, FOUR, Flynn attempts the pull again, executes the shot with much more authority this time, swivels as he sends that wide of mid-on for a boundary

7.2

Russell to Flynn, OUT, oh dear! just after that audacious shot, Flynn looks to crash a length ball through the covers, inside-edges on to the stumps, perhaps that ball moved in a touch and Flynn didn't adjust for that, his wait for an ODI half-century continues, that average does not make good reading, Russell gets his second wicket

DR Flynn b Russell 12 (28m 16b 2x4 0x6) SR: 75.00

Rampaul to Nicol, no run, short of length ball just outside off, confidently blocked towards cover from the crease

8.2

Rampaul to Nicol, 1 run, nasty bounce there for Nicol, he was caught on the crease, that hit almost the top of the handle as he gets the behind square leg

8.3

8.4

8.5

Rampaul to Williamson, no run, blocked to the off side by Williamson

8.6

Rampaul to Williamson, 2 runs, both feet off the ground as he chops that towards deep backward point, a fumble in the deep allows the extra run

Eddie Filsak: "@ Anshuman- i wouldn't be too hasty in chopping Sammy, reliable bowler and potential decent batsman. Just needs to be more constant with the bat. Plus it's not a good idea to chop and change the captain."

47.5

Rampaul to Watling, OUT, referral, a big appeal for lbw is upheld, Watling argues for a review again, that looked plumb and it is plumb, it was a length ball and he looked to thump that towards midwicket, he missed and was struck low on the pads in front of middle, it was the end of the innings, and only No. 11 to come, so Watling decided to punt on the review, doesn't work this time though, he's a goner, end of a important knock for Watling, with several other keepers looking for a place in the NZ side

1.00pm The bad news is there are some clouds around the stadium, hopefully there will be no rain. Andre Russell says his team should "definitely" get the runs, as they "bat from No.1 to No. 11".

Doesn't look like it will be too much of a challenge for West Indies' power-packed batting, but New Zealand have made a habit of surprising people who under-estimate them. Can they do it once more? Join us in 35 minutes or so for the chase.

Mehdi: "No.11 having the highest strike rate, how often does that happen?"

Mansoor Kayani: "i think shoaib akhtar,s 43 (16) against england in 2003 world cup is highest strike rate for a number 11 ." That too after coming in at 80 for 9! Scorecard.
