New Zealand in West Indies Test Series - 2nd Test

West Indies v New Zealand

West Indies won by 5 wickets

Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100

Three slips and a gully. James: "With a bit of moisture in the pitch, Roach and Best might be a bit of a handful." A bit of a delay, one of the sponsor boards on the boundary is creating an issue, the glare. Roach it is

We are set for the start. Bright and sunny right now. Guptill and Watling are the openers. Guptill batted superbly in the first innings of the North Sound Test, before he threw it away when on 97.

The reason for Martin's exclusion: "We wanted two fresh bowlers [seamers]," says Ross Taylor, after Martin bowled a fair bit in the warm-up game and the first Test.

9.55am There's moisture in the Sabina Park track, so the fast bowlers won't mind that. August 6th is Independence Day in Jamaica, the 50th - that'll be the final day of the Test.

Three changes for New Zealand. BJ Watling, Trent Boult and Tim Southee come back . New Zealand: Taylor, Boult, Bracewell, Brownlie, Guptill, McCullum, Southee, van Wyk, Wagner, Watling and Williamson. There's no Chris Martin.

9.40am Tino Best comes in for the injured Rampaul. West Indies: Sammy, Best, Chanderpaul, Deonarine, Fudadin, Gayle, Narine, Powell, Ramdin, Roach and Samuels

9.35am Toss: West Indies have won the toss and decided to field. The overnight rain may have a role in it.

9.20am We're still about 10 minutes from the toss, so do read the preview here. The conditions in Jamaica were hot and humid yesterday, though there are scattered thunderstorms forecast for some days of the Test. However, there's relief reading this: "After a night of heavy rain in Kingston, the sun is shining brightly at #SabinaPark and no sign of rain. Wi ready for some." Thanks Digicel Cricket Twitter.

9.15am Hello and welcome to our coverage of the second Test between West Indies and New Zealand to be played at Sabina Park, an iconic venue. Expect a better crowd here than what we saw at North Sound. Kemar Roach, Sunil Narine, Chris Gayle and Kieran Powell were the stars for West Indies there, as they went up 1-0 by sealing victory on the final day. New Zealand are without Daniel Vettori for this Test, or Daniel Flynn. There's no Ravi Rampaul either. All are injured.

2.2

4.1

Roach to Watling, no run, beaten, short of a good length outside off, nips away as he pokes at it and is beaten

4.2

Roach to Watling, no run, edged and short again, drew him forward with that good-length ball, Watling got forward and pushed at it as it moved away, landed short of Powell at third slip

4.3

Roach to Watling, no run, back of a length on the off, gets on the back foot and plays it in front of cover

4.4

Roach to Watling, no run, ooh, got that one to move back in, on a good length, gets forward and gets an inside edge on the pads as he defends

Brewsir: "Kemar this is the ground of pacemen who spearheaded attacks and inspired fear. Roy, Courtney and Mikey are three that every fan remembers. Ask Boycs who, by the way, made a very sensible comment about pacemen and fitness. He also said that you were good. Remember that One swallow does not make a summer, so tails up and Pace like fire."

4.5

Roach to Watling, OUT, Well done, Kemar! Wait a minute, was that a No-ball? Kept persisting outside off, bowled in that channel and got it on a good length, a hint of away movement and Watling, who was forward, poked and edged it to first slip. Gayle took it comfortably. Erasmus, after the replay, says it's out

BJ Watling c Gayle b Roach 2 (20m 13b 0x4 0x6) SR: 15.38

Ooh, a very marginal call that. Replays show his foot may have just landed on the line and then slid forward. Not entirely sure if he had a part of that foot behind the line as it landed. Close, close call, but the benefit of doubt, this time, goes to the bowler. New Zealand are one down.

McCullum is the new man

4.6

Roach to McCullum, 1 bye, that's bowled down the leg side, McCullum makes no contact

Kieran: "How on earth was that not a no-ball?! You can clearly see shadow under the foot, which means it hasn't landed...shocker!" That's what Kieran thinks, Roach may be a touch lucky there. Replays, again, show the ball landed on the line - nothing behind the line - and then slid forward.

End of over 5 (1 run, wicket maiden) New Zealand 11/1

5.3

Best to McCullum, OUT, Best strikes, lovely bowling, this one was on the off stump and bowled with pace, McCullum moved back, it moved away just a little to take the outside edge as he tried to play it off the back foot, got a thin edge to the keeper, West Indies are on a roll

BB McCullum c †Ramdin b Best 0 (6m 4b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

We're only into the sixth over, but I haven't seen any swing so far. There has been movement off the pitch and on both occasions, it's that movement that's troubled the batsmen. Best has been good, quick and fired up. Ross Taylor walks in

5.4

Best to Taylor, 1 run, almost another wicket, that flew towards gully off the glove, banged in short and Taylor was surprised by the pace and bounce, was in the air for a long time, Chanderpaul moved to his left from point but didn't dive. I think it hit the glove first, then the shoulder, there were two sounds but safe in the end, was given a run

5.5

Best to Guptill, no run

5.6

Best to Guptill, no run, short of a good length outside off and he allows it through

End of over 6 (1 run) New Zealand 12/2

LRPL Taylor    1* (1b)      KAJ Roach    3-1-7-1

Michael: "I'm glad NZ are going with four seamers in the absence of Vettori. A better chance of at least one of them firing in these conditions. I reckon that Neil Wagner will be very flattered to be listed on the batting order at 5 though! PS: That was CLEARLY a no-ball - he didn't slide forward, the only thing behind the line was the shadow of his foot, not helped by blurred images. Grrrr!" I thought it did slide forward but after landing on the line, so that would have been a no-ball anyway.

6.1

Roach to Taylor, no run, short of a good length outside off, moved away, he left that one alone to the keeper

6.2

Roach to Taylor, no run, angling in towards middle, landing full, drives that wide of mid-on, no single on offer there

6.4

Roach to Taylor, no run, sliding on the pads, trying to get it away past short square leg, clips the pads and rolls towards that fielder

6.5

Roach to Taylor, no run, in the channel outside off, this one keeps its line and it's been left alone to the keeper

Errol Erskine: "It was only a matter of time before one was caught in the slips area, NZ batters seems uncertain outside the off stumps today, maybe it's the extra pace and or bounce that they are seeing"

6.6

Roach to Taylor, 2 runs, pushed it full on middle and it was played back past mid-on for a couple of runs

End of over 7 (2 runs) New Zealand 14/2

Ron: "Not necessarily the greatest fan of Best from his earlier stints in the WI team, but quite impressed with his comeback. Even more so with the pace at which he is bowling and seems fairly accurate so far..."

7.1

Best to Guptill, 2 runs, fired in on middle and leg, lands full and it's turned into the leg side for a couple of runs

7.2

Best to Guptill, no run, drops that short on middle, rocks back and defends it towards the bowler

7.3

Best to Guptill, no run, on a good length on the off, drives that towards mid-off from the crease, confidently driven

7.4

Best to Guptill, no run, short of a good length on the off, nips away, pretends to withdraw but he may have just been beaten there

7.5

Best to Guptill, no run, drops that one on middle, gets on the back foot and drops it into the off side

7.6

Best to Guptill, no run, lets out a grunt as he delivers, wants him to drive that one, pitched on a length outside off, he's not tempted is the batsman, lets it go

End of over 8 (2 runs) New Zealand 16/2

Hadleigh: "I can't remember the last time NZ had two bowlers capable of 140k + opening the bowling. Best looks pumped up, look out NZ."

Steve the Bajan: "There seems to be some confusion about the definition of a no ball. The fact that, at noon in Jamaica, there was "shadow" of foot behind the crease suggests that it was NOT a no ball. The foot does NOT have to be grounded behind the crease. Form the Laws of Cricket: "For a delivery to be fair in respect of the feet, in the delivery stride... (b) the bowler's front foot must land with some part of the foot, WHETHER GROUNDER OR RAISED... (ii) behind the popping crease." Yes, but I'm not sure I noticed any part of the foot, grounded or raised, behind the popping crease in Roach's case.

8.1

Roach to Taylor, no run, in the channel outside off stump, bowled at 135.6kmph, leaves that one alone to the keeper

8.2

Roach to Taylor, 1 no ball, No-ball called this time, pitched up outside off and it's driven straight to mid-off, this one was a clear no-ball

8.2

Roach to Taylor, FOUR, good shot from Taylor, pitched on a good length and he pushed that through the line past mid-off, good timing and it fetches him a boundary

8.3

Roach to Taylor, 2 runs, fires it full on middle, that's been clipped through square leg for a couple of runs

Tim: "New Zealand fans should probably be more worried about the technique of their openers than the bowlers front foot. Already 5 edges, 2 to hand. So far it could have been way worse."

8.4

Roach to Taylor, no run, bowled on a good length outside off, leaves that one alone to the keeper

8.5

Roach to Taylor, FOUR, saw a lot of width and ensured he cashed in on that one, slashed it hard, was short and wide and it was dispatched over point and gully

8.6

Roach to Taylor, 2 runs, nicely done again, pitched up and he eases that past mid-off for a couple to relieve the pressure, somewhat

End of over 9 (13 runs) New Zealand 29/2

Sammy to bowl now, replacing Best. Has two slips and a gully

9.1

Sammy to Guptill, 1 run, lands on a length outside off stump, that's been driven wide of mid-off for just a single when there should have been a couple

9.2

Sammy to Taylor, no run, pitched on a good length on off and middle, defended towards mid-on

Alain: "I think that the no ball problem is greatly affecting Kemar's pace.....When he now came out he was troubling Ricky Ponting with speeds over 150kmph but his mind is constantly studying the no ball problem...at least it hasn't affected his wicket taking ability though :)"

9.3

Sammy to Taylor, no run, short of a good length on middle, defended that solidly towards mid-on

9.4

Sammy to Taylor, no run, bowls that on middle and it's been driven back towards the bowler

Roach to Taylor, no run, short of a good length, gets on the back foot and taps it back to the bowler

10.5

Roach to Taylor, no run, shortish outside off, gets back and cuts that towards point, struck straight to him

Shad: "People should just get over the no-ball issue. So Roach was lucky to get a wicket, but batsmen are lucky all the time when umpires/players don't detect edges or deflections. If you want a full-proof method, put a sensor at the popping crease, use hot spot for "each" ball, etc. I, for one, think Roach 'deserved' that wicket and thankfully the beautiful balance of cricket (through its nuanced uncertainties) was maintained."

10.6

Roach to Taylor, FOUR, width from Roach and it's been thrashed, short of a good length and cracked through point for a boundary

Two lacklustre overs from Roach

End of over 11 (4 runs) New Zealand 35/2

Ben Gundry: "Wagner listed to come in next. Given that he is the specialist night-watchman, that means this pair will be together until shortly before stumps. I'd be happy with that."

Sammy's been replaced by Narine, who has a slip and a short leg

11.1

Narine to Guptill, no run, gets forward, gave it a bit of air and turned it past short leg

11.2

Narine to Guptill, no run, turns and bounces, but it's down the leg side, lets that one go

11.3

Narine to Guptill, no run, shortish on the off, rocks on the back foot and knocks it into the leg side

11.6

Narine to Guptill, no run, slightly short, rocks back and punches it towards mid-on

Time for drinks. Geoffrey Boycott had this to say about Kemar Roach in our fortnightly show, Bowl at Boycs.

James: "Alain, the loss of Roach's pace might be due to injuries? I'd like to see Roach bowl the occasional ball at 150kph+ (rest at current pace), the old Andy Roberts "faster ball" trick. In fact I reckon Roach would benefit hugely from working with Andy."

A change of ends for Sammy. They showed another replay of the Roach no-ball that the umpire thought wasn't. Just confirms how close a call that was. Was there a bit of that foot behind the line? Very close indeed, but I'd reckon No.

12.5

12.6

Sammy to Taylor, no run, lands on a good length on the off, gets across a hint and defends it to mid-off

Curtly Ambrose, on TV commentary, says the match in the 90s which was abandoned in Kingston due to a poor pitch - the game between England and West Indies - shouldn't have been called off. England were struggling and the pitch wasn't as bad as it was made out to be, Ambrose says
