West Indies v New Zealand, 2nd Test, Trinidad June 14, 2014

West Indies axe Samuels and Powell

ESPNcricinfo staff

West Indies have dropped allrounder Marlon Samuels and opener Kieran Powell from their squad for the second Test against New Zealand in Trinidad, and replaced them with uncapped batsman Jermaine Blackwood and Leon Johnson.

Blackwood, a 22-year old from Jamaica, has played 16 first-class matches and averages 40.38, with three hundreds and six half-centuries. He scored two centuries for the High Performance Team in recent matches against Bangladesh A. Blackwood also scored 94 and 118 in the final of the 2014 regional four-day competition against Windward Islands.

Johnson, 26, played three ODIs for West Indies in 2008, against Bermuda and Canada, but hasn't appeared in an international since then. The Guyana batsman scored three half-centuries in the two matches against Bangladesh A. Johnson averages 33 after playing 50 first-class games.

Samuels was dropped after he made a pair in West Indies' 186-run defeat in the first Test at Sabina Park. He was dismissed second ball both times, and has only three scores above 20 in his last 12 innings.

Powell made 28 and 0 in Jamaica, and has consistently failed to convert his starts for a while now. He passed 20 in eight of his last 15 innings but has a high score of 48 in that period.

The second Test against New Zealand begins at Queen's Park Oval on June 16.

Squad: Denesh Ramdin (capt), Chris Gayle, Kraigg Brathwaite, Kirk Edwards, Darren Bravo, Jermaine Blackwood, Leon Johnson, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Kemar Roach, Jerome Taylor, Sulieman Benn, Shane Shillingford, Jason Holder, Shannon Gabriel.

Why can't Chandrapaul to bat at No 3. How many times he was not out and ran out partners in test matches? Everybody knows WI tail. They are the worst in the world even during Loyd/Richards Era. Anyway I love yound Black Caps hope they can make it 2 nil.

why cant the west indies selectors just wake up!!!! yeah yous got rid of samuels and powel but what about kirk edwards and sulieman benn!!! SURELY sunil narine and dwayne bravo can get a game? it absolutely disgusts me to see so much talent and good players go missing out of squads because the selectors think they are one day specailists only! ummm lets recap for a second ! west indies used to be an a aggresive cricket team regardless of what format they played! and they played there best team week in week out!! if you ask me players like dwayne bravo sunil narine and kieron pollard should atleast be in the squad they are genuine A grade cricketers in my book! let the west indies play the way the west indies should! AGRESSIVE! id rather see pollard smack a quick fifty than watch edwards or some other goose make 5 runs off 25 balls!! i mean come on people the answers are obvious! gayle, brathwaitte, bravo, chanderpaul, dw,bravo, pollard, ramdin, taylor, narine, roach, shillingford.

The calls for bravo jnr to be dropped are madness he is the only light in the batting. The following team should be picked but won't be Gayle,Sarwan, bravo jnr, chanderpaul, blackwood,,bravo snr, ramdin, roach,Taylor, shillingford, narine.

Mr Hamilton always has to correct people.@viswanath the England series was 2 years ago man,Samuels done nothing since.sarwan should be in at 2 and chanderpaul only seems to be playing for his cricket average these days why does he bother coming in at 5.his innings never have any impact on the result.he doesn't protect tailenders and always finishes not out having run out of partners.he either needs to move up to 3 or let a youngster take his place

Narine has his best bowling against the Kiwis so its just sheer stupidity for them to leave him out. yes he was late for the camp but whats the point of cutting off your nose to spite your face! Narine has the Doosra which shillingford has but isnt allowed to bowl. Shane without the doosra is not the same . both he & benn were outperformed by the guy on debut. we also need a quality 3 seamer that slot could be filled by Holder. anyway its world cup time so at least i have an option that wont make me too depressed .

@VivGilchrist ,nice points, let me ask you and others this question , should players not playing first class matches be considered for test matches?

  • Dummy4 on June 15, 2014, 17:18 GMT

Kirk Edwards should be out as well and we dont need two spinners. we will never take 20 New Zealand wickets with two fast bowlers. as for Narine ....whats the purpose of rising to the top of the game if there aren't any perks. It happens in every other sports. The W.I. Selectors are a bunch of old men who need to get with the program.
