Benn left out for World Cup incidents - Butts

The decision to exclude Sulieman Benn, the left-arm spinner, from the West Indies squad for the series against Pakistan was made because of unfavourable reports from the team management on his behaviour during the World Cup, according to Clyde Butts, chairman of the West Indies selectors. The reports were, he said, pertaining to "off-field" incidents involving Benn.

"He [Benn] did not have a very good report from the World Cup and we felt he needed some time to recuperate from that and all the situations that happened there," Butts said at a press conference in Providence. "He has been spoken to. We have sat with him, the selectors and the coach, for a long time in Barbados when we had the camp and we actually explained everything to him."

Benn, 29, has had a string of disciplinary problems since debuting for West Indies in 2008: he was suspended for two one-day internationals for an incident involving Brad Haddin during West Indies' tour of Australia in 2009, and then during South Africa's visit in 2010 he received another ban for an altercation with Dale Steyn and was also sent off the field in a one-dayer by his captain Chris Gayle for refusing to do what the captain asked.

Despite his indiscretions, Benn was awarded a central contract by the WICB for 2010-11 and Butts indicated that his omission might not be long-term. "The Board is actually supposed to reach Benn and decide how we're going to move forward from there," he said.

In the absence of Benn, Devendra Bishoo, the 25-year-old legspinner, has been selected as the lone spinner in West Indies' squad for the first Test against Pakistan. Butts said the selectors had considered picking two spinners given the nature of the track in Providence, but decided one would give the team more balance. He also said Bishoo, who was the leading wicket-taker in the ODI series against Pakistan, should be fit for the Test, despite concerns over his fitness after the one-day series, but there was a contingency plan in case he is not able to play.

Benn is the best off spinner WI have recently had, i hope they do not treat him like Australia did with Andrew Symonds. Benn needs a good mentor who can help him to control his emotions and play quality cricket. Benn & Bishoo will be a great combination that WI can't afford to miss.

Mr. Bernard Joseph FYI if Sammy?? Why is Sammy on the team did he make it?? NO!! HE is WICB puppet. Ganga could make the team if devon the dunce could make it!! PLUS Darren Ganga has a superior cricketing brain and proven leadership skills. But the WICB needs a YES man right now so Darren Sammy is de man for the job.

Benn is a mediocre slow bowler. he is not a spinner. His arrogance is unwarranted especially based on his lack of ability. His international disciplinary problems are numerous but his regional actions and attitude are much worse. The Board does not act on these actions which has led MR Benn to believe that he is much better than he is. To think that he has a retainer contract is an insult to all the better and more disciplined bowlers in the WI.

Can't you all see that this fellow Benn needs anger management sessions?

  • rayinto on May 12, 2011, 13:10 GMT

Benn needs help! Good management would harness his talent and help him become better. This management just dumps players. Thats why we cant move forward. I said it before - West indies have plenty of talent but no leadership.Hilaire reminds me of the headmasters back in the 70s who used to cane their kids. If Benn has an attitude problem, how is it rectified by dumping him. WICB continue to sweep their problems under the carpet!

PACERONE, since when is Benn our best spinner?

He should not have benn on the team in the first place. He cannot bat, field and a mediocre spinner at best.

We have much better spinners who have not even gotten the chances that he has.

This is one of the few decisions that the WICB has made which I agree with.

  • on May 12, 2011, 12:48 GMT

Why wait on Benn to sort out his problems? He has had a history of disciplinary issues over the years and has not changed. Get rid of him and channel energies into an up and coming individual.

I am a Pakistan fan. I actually like Benn ok he has got into trouble from time to time, this is because he is agressive, whats wrong with that. The altercations he had with Haddin and Steyn were not his fault or he was not the creator of th eprobelm, he merely responded. we all know what Haddin is about! However discipline within the team is important if he has not obeyed the captainn than that is wrong. Hopefully the caht he has had with th emanagement will help, but hopefully it doe snot take is agrression away. I am hoping he makes a swift return to cricket as he is a very talented cricketer!

@ Simonviller, although I agree Sir Garry was a gent, in a modern team his (self confessed) affection for parties and advesion forgoing to bed would be frowned on by management.

Well Wendies here we go again.A fresh start.A chance to prove that we belong.I see plenty of positive in this WI team to face Pakistan. We have stalwart middle order batsmen that can bat for long periods. If Smith & Simons can give us a solid start, then Bravo,Nash,Chanderpaul,Sarwan and Samuels can put a score of 400+together.I truly believe we can beat Pakistan in this series. In fact, this crop of players really represent the best the region has to offer right now.Imagining Chris,Bravo ,Taylor and Pollard also available. And for all those naysayer, impatient, partisan fools who continue their noisy call for sammy's head,I say quit.Your nonstop criticism has led to Lara,Chanderpaul and Sarwan all giving up the post hastily. If you are truly serious about stability in this WI team then u will rally around whom ever is chosen to lead the team.Everyone's saying that Sammy shouldn't be in d team and at d same time calling for D Ganga to be skipper.I say let him make D team first.RALLY ROUND WI!!

England promotes their bad boy Broad to be captain and W.I banish their best spinner. W.I punish Samuel and Australia cover-up the Waugh,Warne affair. How does that work?

  • lazytrini on May 12, 2011, 9:55 GMT

Benn has been consistent with his attitude problem, he will not improve, it is who he is. The emergence of Bishoo hopefully means we can safely remove Benn from the equation and never mention him again.

  • drtrinileggie on May 12, 2011, 8:47 GMT

He is a mediocre bowler, Trinidad have far better attacking spinner with a tradition. I can bowl better than Mr lollipop. Anyway he can't make this team before Devendra anyway.
