"Who writes your scripts?" England's legendary allrounder Ian Botham was asked after taking a wicket first ball on his Test comeback in 1986. The same question can be asked of another flamboyant cricketer today as Shahid Afridi turned in one of the greatest all-round ODI performances to flatten West Indies in his comeback game.

With Pakistan axing a whole host of experienced players in recent months - including Younis Khan, Shoaib Malik and Kamran Akmal - there had been murmurs over whether Afridi's ODI career should have been given yet another lifeline. He's someone who sees himself as a bowling allrounder in recent years, and with no wickets in six previous ODIs, the doubts were justified. Afridi squashed them, and how - a game-transforming half-century and then the second best one-day bowling figures of all time.

Even in a career as wildly fluctuating as his, there can be few moments when the turnaround in fortunes is this stark. It is the ability to deliver these truly gobsmacking performances that has earned him a loyal legion of fans, who swear by him even during extended runs of failures.

Before he walked in to bat on a drizzly morning in Providence, Pakistan's top order had once again keeled over against the moving ball as Jason Holder delivered a searing new-ball spell of 8-4-8-4. The manner of those dismissals would have been as demoralising for Pakistan's fans as the scoreline, with two top-order batsmen being bowled when looking to leave the ball.

Misbah-ul-Haq was playing his usual hold-the-innings-together role scoring at about a run an over, but when Afridi strode out, he was immediately looking to score at a run a ball. Pakistan were 47 for 5 and the team's last recognised batting pair was in the middle, but that didn't prevent Afridi from launching his third delivery for six over long-off. Given his kamikaze style of play, a quick end to his innings wouldn't have surprised. It almost did after he belted another six and a four, but Chris Gayle put down a tough chance at slip.

After that, he could take lesser risks despite scoring rapidly as West Indies' bowlers offered several boundary balls. Marlon Samuels offered long hops and full tosses that were dispatched beyond the rope, Darren Sammy was cleverly dinked over the shoulder before his half-volley was pounded through extra cover to bring up the half-century off 35 deliveries. The man who was expected to be the biggest threat, Sunil Narine, was caned out of the attack, taken for 32 in three overs.

On a track where the rest of the Pakistan team combined to score 120 off 245, Afridi plundered 76 off 55, showing the insouciance and big-hitting that typifies his batting. Misbah added to his ever-expanding collection of ODI half-centuries as well, on a track which he called one of the toughest he has come across, and his partnership with Afridi underlined how two vastly different styles of batting can both be crucial to the team's cause. Their efforts drove Pakistan to 224, which seemed like a challenging target for West Indies.

Twenty minutes into the chase, that seemed a far larger score as West Indies were reduced to 7 for 3, the second lowest score for which they have lost three wickets in ODIs. It began with Mohammad Irfan's swinging, 146kph low full toss that resulted in a golden duck for Johnson Charles in the first over. The pace and bounce of Irfan disconcerted the batsmen, with Darren Bravo the next to go, caught down the leg side.

The biggest breakthrough, though, came through a direct hit from Misbah at cover, catching Chris Gayle well short while attempting a single that would have been tough for the quickest of runners, but was hara-kiri for a slow-mover like Gayle. Pakistan knew well the importance of that wicket - Misbah was midway through celebrating the dismissal when he was swamped by his joyous team-mates.

Marlon Samuels and Lendl Simmons then cut out all risk, and played ultra-cautious cricket against some top bowling from Pakistan. "Huge pressure is there, huge pressure," wicketkeeper Umar Akmal frequently reminded the batsmen. The biggest strength in the Pakistan line-up is the quality they have across their bowling, with no major weak links.

With Simmons and Samuels batting out 15 overs - and scoring only 34 on a turning track - the required-rate had crept above six, but West Indies were still optimistic of winning. Afridi was only brought on as the sixth bowler, but there was no stopping him from being the headliner. In his second over, he had Simmons stumped and Dwayne Bravo lbw next ball. He was showing off his famous starman celebration, and West Indies' chances were evaporating.

His mix of legspinners, quick sliders, the occasional googly and even the odd offbreak proved too much for West Indies' batsmen. Kieron Pollard's had three ducks in his previous four ODI innings, and his lack of confidence was apparent, as he holed out to long-off for 3. Not long after, Afridi had Samuels lbw with a delivery that turned in. The big crowds that had turned up in Guyana knew the game was up and headed for the exit.

Afridi's five-for came soon after as Kemar Roach handed a simple return catch, and his figures were an unbelievable 6-2-6-5, with every delivery seemingly a wicket-taking one. He didn't strike in the next couple of overs though and was taken out of the attack, before being brought back six overs later as Sammy and Narine somehow survived the other bowlers. They didn't last against Afridi, though, who needed only one over to wrap up the match and consign West Indies to their lowest ever total in a home ODI.

The fans in Guyana had been starved of international cricket for two years after a conflict between the government and the country's cricket board, and while they were treated to an awe-inspiring performance from Afridi, they would have wanted more from the consistently misfiring West Indian batting.

Afridi is not Awesome; the WI is lacklustre. Ramdin and Sarwan was dropped, now its time to drop Pollard. He does not perform even in the flat wickets of IPL. Dwayne Smith did better. My observation is the Trinis are pulling in one direction and the rest of the WI team in another, EXCEPT for Sammy, which is the only player that plays with Heart and Soul WI Commitment. DJ Bravo is a poor captain and performer (the entire team does not support him in their performance). Do not forget the Gayle, Bravo, Sarwan money before WI commitment. And WICB & Selectors..quite incompetent.

Consistency is the key now fpr Pakistan. the lower order looks distinctly suspect. Whatever happened to Razzak? Do not rate Waheed, perhap,s Yasir Arafat?

superb batting and bowling.

This must be the greatest ODI performance of all time. If not, well it must be pretty close to it. I cannot really think of any better performances to be honest

It's worrying time for the WI fans, both the current captian and vice captain are the wrong people for the job. They have to put back Sammy in that position, he has proven his leadership.

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 16:11 GMT)

The revival of Afridi's form in batting and bowling is a good omen for Cricket Pakidtan. Let us earnestly hope that its not a flash in the pan. Afridi's consistent performance in the current series will make him a strong contender for being nominated as captain for ODI and T20 world cups due in 2015 and 2014 respectively.

Good to see him back..My Fav. Pakistani player..Greetings from India....

Super performance Afridi. i cant believe you scored so fast! remember how you once said "i am better than most" , well you proved that you are the best all rounder in Pakistan! just stay consistent

Awsome Afridi! See Pakisthan reeling at 47/5 I had decided not to follow the series. Seven is the number. Thanks for making a comeback Afridi. I will now wait for Shewag to make a comeback too.

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 15:24 GMT)

never seen such performance from the team a long time .... all credits to Afridi !! wt a performance !!!

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 15:15 GMT)

Talent and hitting ability wise Afridi is right up there with MS Dhoni. I cannot believe they did not have Afridi in team for CT.

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 15:14 GMT)

The biggest plus of the BOOM BOOM is that he shows no respect to any bowler and he proved it in the recent game. He will make you pay for every single mistake like Gayle did by dropping his catch in the first slip. He punished the WESTINDIES today. He is a match winner who won tons of matches for Pakistan His presence in Pakistani team is enough for us.

Posted by delboy on (July 15, 2013, 15:14 GMT)

Therein lies the difference between regimes. The Pakistani cricket board dropped Afridi and made him realise that he needs to work on his game and PROVE he is worthy of his position in the team. He goes away and works on his fitness and stake a credible case for being recalled. He returns and performs. He and his peers are aware the a single policy exist for ALL. The WI make things up as they go along; the need a common and consistent way to drop Ramdin, Gayle, Sarwan, Pollard or whoever is not delivering. This don not only apply to the players but should include the likes of Richardson and Gibson.

Posted by SyedAbidHussain on (July 15, 2013, 15:06 GMT)

@HamzaBoneyM: You are wrong ! Afridi scores a 40+ score every 5th innings !! That is not bad at all for an all-rounder who has taken so many wickets.

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 15:03 GMT)

Wow "Boob-Boom" gave us a bit of a tonking with bat and ball. It took the shine off what was a good performance by Jason Holder. With the exceptions of Samuels and Sammy getting a start, the others were embarrasingly exposed by Afridi's in-dipping leggys. I know Gayle doesn't like to run, but what should've been a fairly straight-forward single was so casual to the point of schoolboy-cricket. When you hit it to a fieder and decide to run, you actually run and not jog halfway. Well hopefully the boyz will take the unpredicatble Pakistani team, a little more seriously on Tuesday and stop treating it like a warm-up freindly.

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 14:47 GMT)

In next four matches he won;t perform..

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 14:38 GMT)

I don't know what wrong Sammy has made so that WICB removed him as captain. He captained to win you WT20 title which I WICB don't like.

Wishes from Allwyn- India- If you want Afridi to be successful , drop him as soon as he fails in couple of ODI ,bring him back , he performs, otherwise he takes his place for granted- Last night was stellar performance

Pakistan have a strong bowling line up and considering Mohd Aamir will come come by next year It will grow stronger. Despite lack of resources like Indians has Pakistan still managing to stay in the elite due to pure talent. They could become a very tough side to beat if they produce couple of good batsman only.

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 14:21 GMT)

Very well written Rog! I'll never comprehend the West Indies selectors' thought process.

have to give the credit here. I was one of those insisting he be dropped for the betterment of the team.

He's still got it.

Why is hafeez still in the team if he is not performing than take him out he is not a match winner please bring sohaib maqsood in the team who is so far the best 1 down batsman in pakistan. i hope moin khan can make the brave decision and bring sohaib into the team and drop hafeez.

afridi is just a flash in the pan, i hope he prove's me wrong as far as WI are concerned they need like's of sarwan, chanderpaul in middle order rather than smith and simmons, they need a specialist wicket keeper bcoz they cant just put pressure on young charles

Posted by m812 on (July 15, 2013, 13:09 GMT)

@Singh1699 : You are RIGHT....IF and again I repeat IF Pakistan want they can win every tournament...its a different thing they choose not to...and other countries should be grateful for that. Some other rules you may not be aware are a Pakistani batsman is never taken out by opposing bowler...its always he is plain unlucky the ball takes an edge and flies to fielder they gift their wicket (he is donating mood perhaps on that day) . But similar thing when it happens to be a Pakistani bowler , it pure bowling talent which is responsible for the wicket.

Posted by Shahid06 on (July 15, 2013, 13:08 GMT)

Hi Cosmos Kapil,

It was not Misbah who received a reprieve from the umpire..instead it was Umar Akmal, who got out quickly later on..Don't forget, Nasir Jamshed was given out wrongly by the umpire...This game of cricket is a great leveler..

Instead of moaning about why Pakistan won, try to praise the way they won this match...

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 13:00 GMT)

So who will we drop from the side now? or do we bring back Ramdin and drop him back, because it seems that Ramdin is the only west indian other than sarwan being dropped.

Simply Awesome Performance by LALA ..!!

proude of u lala

Posted by Snambidi on (July 15, 2013, 12:55 GMT)

This is exactly Awsome.

Sahib Afridi is a real asset for Pakistan with ball as well as bat.

I remember to have followed his adventure of creating a record in the books of cricket

By hitting Sixes& fours to become the record making player with minimum number of Balls faced.

Later on I think the record was broken by some one else.

Any how the way WI pis humiliated now is something different from all his adventures on cricket until now.

Is this also an eyeopener to the selectors of Pakistan for excluding him & Younis Khan from Champion Trophy?

Pakistan had to return home without a win in the Champion Trophy.

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 12:54 GMT)

Can not understand..How he has been dropped form the champions Trophy ....

Posted by Big3BOSS on (July 15, 2013, 12:52 GMT)

Stats show that Afridi score a 50 every 18 ODIs and his bowling is effective every 20 ODIs....This was his brilliant performance due long time........Now next best show is atleast 15 ODI's away ...till then 23/4 for Pakistan is common factor

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 12:50 GMT)

"Gayle.Charles, Samuels, Sr. Bravo, Pollard and Samy all are hitters and aggressive batsman..Now tell me where is pure technicians in the middle order who can rotate the strike and make the others to play around him? They have a talented Darren Bravo but he can't do anything alone he needs someone who hcan play some kinda anchor role in the middle...Out of Pollard, Dwayne Bravo and Sami you can only afford one as genuine allrounder......Coach GIBSON may need some wisdom of differentiating between T-20's and ODI's!".......

Posted by Sports4Youth on (July 15, 2013, 12:48 GMT)

A better Eleven will be this

Nasir, Shezhad, Harris, Umar Ak., Misbah, Hafeez, Afridi, Junaid, Asad, Ajmal, Irfan.

I would like to see Umar Amin in there, But right now Hafeez wont be dropped. But eventually after sometime when Hafeez looses his place in the side, I would want Amin comming in for Hafeez.

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 12:39 GMT)

This man's got talent and nerve.. I wonder what are the top 5 doing for Pakistan.. Lay them off and introduce some new blood of fighters. They'll learn from Afridi and Misbah, just like how Afridi learnt from Ijaz, inzi and anwar!!!

Posted by makeshift on (July 15, 2013, 12:33 GMT)

boom boom and will soon be out

never been consistent

a senior player- he should play like he did yesterday- with responsibility and this will assist other players

he is so talented but he throws his wicket way by playing big shots

BTW- I am Indian Fan

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 12:30 GMT)

Brillant Afridi..Pakistan need few changes in their playing XI, Asad shafiq should be replaced by Haris Sohail and Asad Ali with Junaid khan.Hafeez should play at 5 or6..Shezad, Jamshed, Haris, , Misbah, U.Akmal, AFRIDI, HAFEEZ, U.Amin, Wahab, Junaid and Irfan.

Posted by Shahzadhussan on (July 15, 2013, 12:28 GMT)

By the way both openers got out due to over cautious approach and lack of confidence. Lack of confidence has been big problem in batsmen under Misbah's captaincy.

Posted by Shahzadhussan on (July 15, 2013, 12:24 GMT)

Great lala's performance. We should not expect a lot from him with the bat but certainly with the ball as he has regained his spin back. To improve batting in general, I would request to play Hafeez at 6 after Umar Akmal and Bring Asad/Haris at 3. Hafeez is good only on subcontinent wickets at position 6 he can bat better with relatively old ball. But I know likes of Misbah do not have capability to understand such things.

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 12:07 GMT)

Indeed an awesome performance by Afridi. He scripted a grand comeback, but it remains to see weather he will deliver from now on because reliability is not what one would attach with Afridi. Pakistan also got lucky when Misbah's edge to keeper denied by umpire. Had it been given at that time it would be a completely different story. However Pakistan seems to be always confident when they go with bat first. With the bowling attack, and the inclusion of Irfan they know that they can make life difficult for chasing team if they can reach somewhere around 200. Result a boost for Pakistan.

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 11:35 GMT)

This WI team is a joke. Why is BRAVO in the team, much less captain totally puzzles me. He is a liability with both his batting, fielding and captaincy. Sammy is the only person in the team than handle any sort of pressure. He is still handling it well without the charge of leading the side. The only consistenly improving player in that team is Johnson Charles. He is a real surprise. Jason Holder, Awesome. Gayle fails more then he dilevers and Samuels well.... I am sorry for Darren Bravo, he has no one to really help him build an inninngs with and would end up just wasting his talent because of all the pressure on him. He cant hold up this WI team. Pollard, well HAHAAHAH. He is the biggest joker around. I want to see how Long Otis will keep him around especially how quickly Sarwan (and Devon Smith) were dropped.

Posted by Balb on (July 15, 2013, 11:34 GMT)

We as West Indians fans must agree that no West Indies spinners can bat like the rest of the top seven cricketing nation spin bowlers so WI has been handicapped historically for a long time now. Fast bowlers do not carry the bat well either, so WI have to dig deep down to select base on present performance and nothing else. In the recent concluded Pakistan vs Guyana match Deonarine made a polish 50 runs. He is a WI player. Isn't it time to select him in the next match? Most likely WI will keep Dwayne Bravo until the end of this Pakistan tour as captain hoping he will score a couple of fifties. Given the recent and present performance by the West against Sri Lanka, India and now Pakistan this would by my team for the rest this tour.

Gayle, K. Powell, Samuels, DW Bravo, Simmons, Sammy, Roach, Holder, Deonarine, (Permaul/Bishoo) Deonarine Braithwaite, and Gabriel.

Do not kid yourself fans, we will not see Chanders or Sarwan back again playing for the WI as long as Gibson is at the helm

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 11:18 GMT)

Boom boom Afridi.

Posted by Stark62 on (July 15, 2013, 11:17 GMT)

Afridi said he was "better than most" and his rightly justified that quote.

Anyway, can we finally drop Hafeez down to no. 6 and move Umar up the order, please!!

Also, I would love to see Harris play in the next game but I'm inclined to give Shafiq another chance because of his fielding and Harris is a bit heavy-footed in the field, like Nasir.

Lastly, can ramiz raja be replaced with someone like Waqar, Wasim or Amir Sohail for commentary duties?!?!

Playing 11 should be: Nasir, Shezhad, Harris/Shafiq, Umar, Misbah, Hafeez, Afridi, Riaz, Asad/Junaid, Ajmal, KIrfan

Posted by dmqi on (July 15, 2013, 11:09 GMT)

Good to see Afridi back in action. I hope he keeps it up, 50% of what he did today. For God's sake give Hafiz a break and bring another batsman in his place. He has no business in this team now. New players must be tried in place of Hafiz and Asad in the next game. Wake up, captain and coach.

I really hope that this will be the turning point of his career and now he will be consistent and keep winning matches for Pakistan. Hez one of the best all rounders in the Cricketing world and deserves to play in that team. Keep up the good work Afridi, keep smashing the ball consistently and get that fear back into the bowlers and captains minds..

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 10:47 GMT)

WI should get Sammy back as captain, Bravo is no good. He is very Naive tactically, why on earth Naraine was not bowling to Tail, once Afridi was out, there was chance of bowling Pak out, but with his field placing & bowling changes he gave them chance of bouncing back. Sammy was much better & WI as a team were also performing better under him.

I hope atleast now the AFRIDI detractors will be silenced, espcially WAQAR YOUNUS. Such an incredible & stupendous scale of performance with the bat & ball can be produced by Afridi alone. Hafeez will never in his life be able to achieve this level and Afridi has been doing for more than 16 years now.

Posted by xylofon on (July 15, 2013, 10:25 GMT)

Congrats Afridi and Pakistan HOWEVER when oh when are they going to pick Haris Sohail, M Rizwan and Umar Amin to play??? In sane order as well, please. I just read Moin Khan has signed on as a chief selector - Moin please do something. Series are for learning so please remove the likes of Hafeez (we dont need another spinner) and give way for a a specialist batsman.

Babar Azam, Babar Azam, Babar Azam. And wheres Hammad Azam?

As for afridi, its C L E A R his problem is not fitness or capability its all consistency. And he still has that to prove. Although we have every reason to get carried away. ; ) GREAT PERFORMANCE.

Nice job shahid!!!! Creamed WI on their own back yard...good work!!! But my question to all Pak fans is that can shahid repeat these performances again and again? Is he gonna be there for 2015 World Cup?? Are there no young players talented enough to take the field??? Even the bowling is nothing compared to Wasim and Waqar era. I have always liked the RAW talent Pakistan always produces but somehow they wanes in time.. Wld have been better for Pakistan if Umar Akmal wld have won the match. This is coming from an Indian

Just shame on the people who are not accepting afridi in the team after such a wonderful comeback. Somebody can tell me that what hafeez & co has performed in last few years.???

It was one of the most fascinating all round performance I have seen from anyone in cricket. I hope Afridi becomes the man of the series not just the man of the match.

BOOM BOOM ... his nickname not for nothing ... First he went BOOM BOOM with the bat like only he can ... 76 off 55 ... and then BOOM BOOM with the ball as the Pakistan Bowler he is ... 7 for 12 ... Imagine if Pakistan had BOOM BOOM at the champions trophy ... Pity the selectors never took him along to England ... He has dominated teams like South Africa and the Windies in the past and could've got Pakistan into the final against India ...

one performance and everyone goes overboard. now let him be in the team for another 50 or 100 odi and fail and produces one fluke "great performance". pakistanis have to face the fact they have absolutely no good replacements either bowling or batting department. thats why we see the same faces again and again and again. now pakistanis are comparing themselves to low ly westindies. they cannot stand on the same platform as south africa, india, srilanka. this is how low they have sunk due to politics.

Good to see Afridi going "Boom Boom" with the bat, and bowling a parsimonious and lethal spell to bundle out the WI and provide Pak with a superb win. There is no need to say about what quality he brings to the Pakistani side. Leaving him out of the Champions trophy was a huge backlash as far as Pak is concerned. Had they inducted Afridi into the team, who knows what would have been the outcome of the tournament for, he could have come handy with some meaty blows to up the run rate and could have been helpful in containing the opposition batsmen with his tight spell. But let us put all that apart now. Afridi is back with a bang and WI beware of this ominous presence.

No doubt its a great comeback, but can he be consistent & survive in the Pak XI is the big question ? He produces once in a blue moon efforts like this and fades away for a while..... Wish he will get a permanent place in Pak team !!!!

Posted by dani_1773 on (July 15, 2013, 9:29 GMT)

@Shouldas-Wouldas-Couldas....correction plz....when it says "the rest of the Pakistan team combined to score 120 off 245" it means already extras are excluded.....meaning REST OF THE PAKISTAN TEAM COMBINED TO SCORED JUST 68 (not 40) off 124 balls.....(in a low scoring game....28 is a big number especially for a weak batting lineup such as Pk)....

Posted by AamirAbuOzair on (July 15, 2013, 9:28 GMT)

OMG, we have to keep him in team for another 10 Years based on this performance.

He has to show some consistency in his game.

Anyway Congrats to all and Afridi for his wonderful bowling. Of lately, I always have ranked him higher as a bowler than a batsman.

His presence in the team that is afridi has the same affect that was present when Imran khan was around, suddenly the team become fighters and look forward to going for the kill.It is fair to say that it takes one player in a team who sets a benchmark which other players emulate.Afridi can be a good captain if he takes an educated and understanding approach when dealing with team mates coaches, officals and the media. Not a big ask follow your head not heart you are the best Afridi.

"As I wrote yesterday when most of my friends were criticizing Misbah for slow strike rate, "That this can be understood from his side he played according to the situation; and what a great comeback by Lala.."By the way as far as W.I is concerned they need some body in the middle order with a firm mind who can make the hitters to play around him and sad they have that talent in term of Chanderpaul and Sarvan but they are not accepting them.....You can't win series with these inconsistent sloggers who lack in techniques.....!"......

How come a player like afridi was out of team for champions trophy. I do feel Pakistan cricket board is responsible for early champions trophy exit.

now it is sure we are not going to watch u anymore.

@timetom, plz let me have status of those 20 matches where Afridi didn't take wicket & scored runs. He is not a burden on the team like Malik, Farhat & Hafeez. every now & then he comes out with some brilliant display. Remember He has most man of the matches than any other pakistani crickter. he is the only man in the history of cricket who scored +50 runs & 5 wickets in a game 3 times. He hold so many world records a long list which i don't want to figure out here. this time around he is more determined & disciplined & you will see he will continue performing like this in every single series untill WC 2015. he will play WC2015 & i am sure pakistan team not only reach the final but also win the WC 2015. The best performer in WC 2015 will be Shahid- Afridi.

What a player, what a come back, As we know form is temporary but talent & class is permanent, hope to see more & more boom boom from mr. Afridi - best wishes from Indian fan.

WI are a big zero when facing leg spinners even if they are non-spinning leg spinners. Big chance for Afridi to not only shield his place in the team but also to hold his head high. He grabbed the opportunity with both his hands.

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 8:16 GMT)

Great performance by Lala. I really love Afridi. If Afridi is not available in PAK Team so the team is nothing and its proved in last Champion Trophy they lost their all matches.

Posted by shoaibazeem on (July 15, 2013, 8:05 GMT)

Afridi need to show some level of consistency in his form. The point is HE CAN PLAY, look at his whole innings except two or three shots the whole batting is in line. Some cut shots are really nice to see. As Misbah said, on the same pitch no other player is able to perform. I don't know what coaches are doing with him, coach need to work on his mind.

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 8:04 GMT)

shahid afridi is a player who is never afraid of any opposition of course he is flboyant and at times is doubtful when he gets going he is dreaded he is a great all rounder at present am sure any captain would love to have him in his team He just needs to be handled well

Posted by Siva_Bala75 on (July 15, 2013, 8:03 GMT)

A once in 3-4 matches' success is good enough because Afridi wins matches. More importantly, there is no bench leave alone bench strength!

Great performance by the Pathan. What a comeback! Pakistan don't know to use him properly. That's why he is a wasted talent. But I still feel he has a lot to offer. I am scared what he will do to us Indians at the next WC 2015

Posted by Surinder_Singh_Bamrah on (July 15, 2013, 7:43 GMT)

Pakistan has always been a great bowling unit...they have proved it time and again...it was inevitable that Pakistan will sink WI ship given the fact they scored 170+and WI's are not good chasers against high class bowling....best of luck Pakistan

Posted by USAMAAJMAL678 on (July 15, 2013, 7:43 GMT)

very good bowling performance by pakistan....but i dont know why wasnt umer amin played the mach...in the last match against india he played brilliiantly with the tail scoring a run a ball 30 remained not out and is dropped in the next match...why???..instead they are playing a mediocre overrated batsman asad shafiq who is backed up by bias pakistan sports channel geo super coz he belongs from karachi...the geo super media in pakistan should stop their biased support towards karachi based players and they shouldnt pull the leg of umer amin who is a very talented batsman...umar amin should be given a chance instead of overrated mediocre batsman asad shafiq...

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 7:42 GMT)

No doubt he rocked in this match. he is like a old wine but Pakistan have to search for better batsman for keeping 2015 world cup in mind. None of the country have better bowlers than Pakistan but they don't have good batters. Being Indian I am big fan of Pakistan bowling.I also have one great idea to better India Pakistan relationship lets exchange few good batsman with your good bowler. Then you will see every ICC trophy or any series trophy/ test mace every thing will remain in Indian sub continent only. What you say ?

Afridi, India longs for the day when you will step foot on her soil again to show us your magic. We love you Afridi in India!

If Afridi make captain of Afgan Team, the Afgan will be make semis of big tournaments. LOL. His impact on game is too good to let other have no scope. They will only watch him playing as enjoyable spectators.

At 47/5 i was having iftar with my friend i told him that if Pakistan can crawl its way to 150 odd Pakistan will win easily.I wasn't at that time expecting 50 + score from Afridi rather a 20 odd.The biggest surprise came in bowling as i thought West Indies will crumble against Pakistan Pace but what came next was history a man down and out .Wicketless for the past 7 matches comes in to bowl and then bowls the life out of West Indes.Well Done Lala and keep up the good work

Posted by srinathphysio on (July 15, 2013, 7:23 GMT)

why bravo is still in the west indies team.he is the weakest captain of all time westindies. what happen with sammy.he has removed because he won the worldcup t20 for windies may be.

Posted by getsetgopk on (July 15, 2013, 7:12 GMT)

I have long held this opinion that Afridi is the right man to lead the team. It was a mistake to take him off the captaincy when the team was on a high and doing well. The reason he lost captaincy was again because of a proven failure and an epic non performer in Imran Farhat. Dont look too much into his performances after he was humiliated and thrown out of the team. The man is an ASSET to Pak cricket. Keep him in the team for as long as possible and a little bit of respect is all that is needed. Seniors like Afridi, Misbah are the pillars of this fragile Pak team, the young crop of players are nervous and shelled most of the time. They need a figure of authority and leadership to instill much needed confidence in them. Thats how international teams work, there's always a thread, someone in the team at all times who can do it all by himself if needed and thats what Pak youngster need. Afridi's presence is as much important as his personal performance.

Cricket is just not Cricket without Afridi \o/

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 6:54 GMT)

I am happy Afridi performed and played a big part in Pakistan winning. I only wish he performed on consistent basis. I am not expecting him to score 70+ each time and take 7 wickets but his performance should be such that it contributes to team's success most of the time. Let us see how he does in the remainder four matches. Overall once again Pakistan's batting failed apart from Misbah and Afridi which is a worry. I think it is time Hafeez is either dropped or bats at number 6 or 7. He just is not good enough to bat at number 3. I am afraid also Shafiq is not ODI player, I rather see Azhar Ali at number 3 as you need proper batsman in this position who is technically competent. I also see him future Captain of Pakistan. Having Umar Akmal as wicket keeper is also not a good idea, he should focus fully on his batting. From the current squad my XI would be: 1. Jamshed, 2. Shehzad, 3. Haris , 4. Umar, 5. Misbah, 6. Hafeez / Afridi, 7. Rizwan, 8. Wahab, 9. Ajmal, 10. Junaid, 11. Irfan.

Posted by ashok1259 on (July 15, 2013, 6:53 GMT)

Still I dont understand why westindies removed sammy as captain. Disappointing performance by WI. Excellent performance by afridi. Started career as batsman and having 355 wickets in his bag it is simply superb.

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 6:46 GMT)

Waoo Waoo.He was unstoppable throughout his batting and bowling was exceptional.I have never seen a comeback like that in my life..

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 6:40 GMT)

With this one match today Afridi broke numerous records, including (1). The only player in history of cricket who has taken 5 wickets and scored 50 runs against 8 different teams. (2). He became the only player in the history of ODI who took a 5 wicket haul and scored 50 runs THREE times. (3). Afridi became THE ONLY MAN in the history of cricket who scored 7000 runs and took 350 wickets. (4) He scored over 4500 of his runs in boundaries, that's 311 sixes ( a world record), and 659 fours. It's 62% of his total score in boundaries. I think I have just one thing to say, "AFRIDI ROCKED - HATERS SHOCKED !!"

BOOM BOOM LALA. LALA is really the best all rounder. Without Lala Pak cricket is incomplete. I wish He would have been included in the squad during the Champions Trophy, I am sure Pakistan would have wins because of Lala. Lala has to be careful with the bat, He tries to hit each ball, I am sure if he take care of his batting, he will make double centuries in matches... Pakistan should never drop him hereafter, even if he shows bad performance in a couple of matches... Well done...and all the best Lala...You are the best of all, in this match you showed you are better than both sides players, loved your sixes, Pakistan people and Cricket board should be really proud of you...

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 6:35 GMT)

we have to wait and watch, how he is going to progress in the coming matches in the same series, yes he is a demoralised allrounder for any opponent, but not as consistent batsman

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 6:31 GMT)

Easily the greatest comeback in ODIs, Shahid Afridi scoring 76 runs off 55 balls and picking up 7 wickets for 12 runs (2nd Best bowling figures in ODIs world wide). What a performance from Afridi and Pakistan. Pakistan leads the 5 match series 1-0 after winning the first ODI by 126 runs. Grand comeback for Afridi

Posted by Night-Watchman on (July 15, 2013, 6:17 GMT)

Now, for the next ten ODIs, Afridi will sit back on his laurels.

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 6:16 GMT)

Every one believes that Shahid Afridi played superbly and lead the Pakistan team to victory. On the other hand Misbah's innings was also very useful. If he had not stayed in the ground the team might not have been restricted to 150. In such situation the West Indian could easily won the game. The public should not criticize Misbah for his slow batting and captaincy. Brain Lara was a legend when the other players did not perform well, the West Indies lost matches.

when pak crossed 125 i was sure it was pakistan's day , just because recently india almost defeated wi chasing similar small total and i believe pak has a better bowling unit .i am pretty sure wi will collaps as they perform well only when gayle starts well .pak has a bowling which is not afraid of gayle rather they are bouncing him out that was a pleasure to watch .afridi is best when it comes to spin .today he showed he can bat also when required.

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 5:45 GMT)

it was like >AFRIDI VS WESTINDIES. Umpiring was horrible today(Samuel was out but not given by the umpire. He was Afridi's eighth wicket. Umar akmal is the guy we need to watch since he did the sloppy job(dropped catch on Afridi's ball which was Afridi's 9th wicket). Mohd Hafeez should be replaced with Razzak, Umar Akmal should be replace with umar ameen<<can be a keeper. I believe Haris Sohail should be given the chance since Asad Shafeeq and the openers are not performing

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 5:30 GMT)

Boom Boom Shows there is no substitute for him in Pak. Well Played . Misbah should bat at 3 to provide solidity. WI going down the drains under Bravo`s leadership. Time for Pollard to be dropped & replaced by a genuine batsman. BTW why Bravo keeps on bowling so expensively while Sammy remain unused.

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 5:29 GMT)

Is it the same Chris Gayle? is it the same Pollard? or is it the same Dwayne Bravo who played in the IPL???? I have a feeling that these players should be allowed by the ICC to wear the colored clothing in which they represented their respective IPL teams and see whether they show the same commitment while playing for West Indies.

Congratulations Afridi and Pakistan!Afridi is an ever shining star of cricket.a true legend.I think his allround performance yesterday was the best in ODI history. But if he can keep some consistency it is good for the team.Anyway Pakistan top order batting remains as a problem. Nasir is a good batsman but he was unlucky yesterday and expect more from great talents like Asad and Umar.WI's are always vulnerable against spin and Pakistan spinners are too good for them.It is happy to watch rise of jason holder and Irfan as top class fast bowlers.

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 5:11 GMT)

Now you believe when Shahid Afridi said he was better than many. That was proven in Guyana yesterday. Pakistan needs people Afridi whether he performe or not. Whenever he score above 50 Pakistan wins make that remark but taking 7 for 12 is another feast. Age is not problem for him. When Boom Boom strike the cricket world trumbles.

Posted by ibbani on (July 15, 2013, 5:09 GMT)

Not to take away any credit from Afridi, but this is the worst ever team played for WI. WI does not know how to prepare pitches for their home side. WI borad does not know what their team's strength is in the current form. THey are neither good spin playing or fast bowling team either. They are just a horrible 11 with all trying to depend on each other an no one really delivering.

Good performance! but the batting still remains a worry for Pakistan cricket team.Today you got a good innings from Shahid Afridi ,but tomorrow you may not get such an innings. So, it is extremely important for other batsmen to click in every condition as the professionals.

wow what a match Afridi had. Egg on my face, I had been saying to drop him altogether from the Pak team and see how he came back. But does it have to do something with dropping him off? If yes, drop him from 2nd match and bring back in 3rd again. The way this hurt lion perform you are sure of winning 3rd and 5th. Jokes aside, don't you guys find anyone decent enough who can give your bowling a score of 225+ regularly? You need not target 300 (and get bundled out on 150+), you have the bowling resources who will win you more matches with 225+ than lose. We (India) need to do 330+ regularly because we can not defend even that (though things looking little bright at the moment, but just). Well played. A good Pak and good WI team is what world cricket loves about.

Posted by 9ST9 on (July 15, 2013, 4:19 GMT)

WI continue to slip further and further. This collection of global T20 mercenaries masquerading as a national/regional side is horridly dysfunctional. I can't remember when Pollard did a worthwhile thing for WI. It was pretty dumb to replace Sammy as skipper since under him West Indies at least put up some more fight. We have seen the captaincy potential of Bravo and Pollard, all swag no work ethic. It's time to bring back Sammy and take a decision on these Bling-Bling superstars.

Where do i start? Dawyne Bravo is proving himself a liability.. All of West Indies batsmen need a reality check!! but Pollard and Gayle need a break... Dawyne Bravo can't manage his team...

drop Gayle and bring in Devon Smith... he was picked so get him in there

drop pollard... Call up Deonarine

Well Played WI ! You guys never fail to entertain and talk about setting and breaking records! Play against the WI these days and you are almost guaranteed to to be in the record books. The entire team plays to impress 20/20 franchises and increase their auction prices. They care less about WI cricket or the fans. Its hit or get out from 1 - 11. They should promote Kemar Roach to open the innings. He is the most sensible batter in the WI line up. What a shame! As for the coach, can't say much. The Guyana team gave Pakistan a run for their money in the warm up match.

I replied, I can't watch Lala (Afridi) getting out early, b'cuz of early situation and what a tremendous performance by Lala, he is still match winning player, one of his memorable inning ever, PCB made biggest mistake by axing him from champions trophy, he was well know of England pitches, but we never learn from past. the whole PCB board system needs to be re structured if we want to bring cricket home. give another chance to Hafiz, shahzad, bring junaid khan for asad ali we need better batting coach who is specialist in opening, todays

Brilliance is not defined by doing the obvious but by strategic intervention. The President of WICB is waiting too long to make the intervention. Fire the selectors and the coach now! Same team with a host of all-rounders beaten 3 in a row with each loss worse than the last. The selectors will continue to leave out Chanders; pick Dwayne Smith (failure at int'l level and hopeless against spin or left arm pace); choose Serwan or Deonarine who have not made regional centuries in years, and keep Gabriel, K. Edwards, Carter, Cottereal and Walton from the series. Blood them!

What a superb display from BOOM BOOM. He is the rock star of this Pakistani team. Such players are not only needed by their teams but are great for the game of cricket in general. We love cricket to see such performances. Hats off to you Afridi - - - a fan of yours since 1997 from other side of the border

Posted by Edassery on (July 15, 2013, 3:15 GMT)

What a show! The 'short' sacking has really bruised his ego in a positive way. It was almost one-man-show except for Misbah's sensible innings.

Posted by BravoBravo on (July 15, 2013, 3:11 GMT)

Congratulations to PAK. And welcome back Mr. Afridi. I hope you play more games with your heart and soul like you did today. A game is always won by the performance of one or two players at a given time. Like the currently concluded match between ENG and AUS, the credit of WIN goes to Anderson. I hate to say that players like Gayle and BB McCullum (NZ) perform only once a year, and then they cash on their exploits for rest of the year. Gayle run out was a turning point for WI.

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 2:57 GMT)

Great Afridi. Consistency is one of the problems of his performance. He see just 'ball' and 'bats' but ignore to read the 'situation' that sometimes bothers the team. Hope he will retain in the team and enjoy.

ha hah where is shiv?most dependable, fired the coach

Posted by Siva_Bala75 on (July 15, 2013, 2:21 GMT)

Pakistan need Afridi as long as he can play. I was surprised when he was dropped for the Champions trophy. Afridi is a clear match winner. Of course this also means that he may fail in a few matches and that is when (a) the fans should stay calm and (b) some other guy should step up- but then I can not find any one other than Hafeez. Pakistan's biggest dilemma will come when they can not play 3 spinners and need to drop Ajmal because they can not afford to drop either Hafeez or Afridi- both top ODI bowlers plus have decent bats.

Posted by riz309 on (July 15, 2013, 2:20 GMT)

Pakistan got to introduce some young batting talent Hafeez got out in a very amateur fashion he needs to give way for Haris Sohail or Hammad Azam

Posted by romirom on (July 15, 2013, 2:18 GMT)

well played pak. bring in harris sohail in playing 11. i think he is the perfect no. 3 batsman currently pak have. and give confidence on umar akmal. say him he is in the team for few series even he doesnt perform. coz he seems to in a low confidence. may be he is thinking about his place in team if he wont perform. Hafeez needs to play as a bowling allrounder and should bat at no. 6 or 7. he is not a pure batsman with pure technique and temperement . he can easily distract by any off field reason as we show in previous 2 games. all young batsman needs to groom and defenitely give some time to adjust them in an international cricket.

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 2:14 GMT)

Awesome LALA continue to play with your heart and souls if u give 100 %in evry match then pak cannot lose easily.disappointed with Haffez sent at 3 v all now he is a nothing batsman at 3.Umer akmal is working hard should be given no 3 position or Harris should be tried at no 3.it looks like misha is a big fan of wahhab raiz.why is wahhab in the team dosnt bowl acuratly, no seam,no swing only pace that to wide off side also high economy and by no means look like a allrounder 21 balls for 7 runs.juned should be given his place or why not pla a extra batsman pak can manage with 2 fast and 3 spinners.hops to se Harris in the aying 11.only 1 pkayer perforemed from pak was Mr boom boom and the rest were spectators.this squad would have done wonders even in CHAMPION TROPHY.

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 2:11 GMT)

Well played afridi.after misbah hafeez going to lead Pakistan I don't know what going to happen then because he is a consistent failure with bat he should bat no 6 or 7 and misbah should bat at no 3 but with positive attitude don't caught on the crease take some singles GOOD LUCK PAKISTAN

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 2:06 GMT)

And again Pak fans are finding fault with Misbah's S/R. So getting out with mediocre score is not a problem but stabilizing a sinking ship with an anchor innings is problem!?!!!? What logic Pak fans.

I am admiring Misbah's batting every time he is coming out to play. He plays according to the situation.

Shahid Afridi is a good player. Today he hit well but that doesn't means he will do that every game. He is very vulnerable to get out fast. But still I wish he can continue batting both explosively and sensibly.

Posted by Darvesh on (July 15, 2013, 1:57 GMT)

sorry, Afridi is still not a batsman, just a pure slogger with no bating technique developed over the last 16 yrs he's been playing. We still need a reliable solid #6 in his place. Fact remains that he only plays this kinda innings once in a while, just to secure his place in the team. Second, kick out Hafeez from the team. Absolutely no bating talent, no ability to judge the ball despite playing the crucial position of an opener for 9 yrs now. Reason Pakistan cricket is sinking every passing day is due the entirely wrong premises for team selection. Half the team consists of these so called all rounders who in reality are complete failure in their main duty as senior batsmen and try to bill themselves as all rounder just to keep their position in the team. What we need are specialists - i.e well established & recognized batsmen and quality bowlers who only focus in their main forte. Only then we can hope to resuscitate Pakistan's past glory.

Posted by sundar_poco on (July 15, 2013, 1:57 GMT)

This version of WI pathetic at best; this team if full of pre-madonna's ; at the current setup I can't imagine them winning a single match. I hope this debacle leads to Gibson and Company getting the boot along with Gayle (lazy, pathetic), Pollard(waste of time); Narine(another pathetic waste of time). WI needs cricketers that have intestinal fortitude; not a bunch of softies…

Posted by   on (July 15, 2013, 1:55 GMT)

I was one to tout the resignation of Chanderpaul from limited overs cricket, but based on his current form with Derbyshire, one can see a partial solution to the gaping and embarrassing void in WI current batting line up.

Posted by Shahsa on (July 15, 2013, 1:53 GMT)

Afridi once said, the day he felt that he has nothing to offer Pakistani team, he will simply quit. And I totally believed in him when he said that. So I request Pakistan Cricket Board to let him play in the team to what ever time period he wishes for. "Just the presence of Afridi in PAK team makes Pak team playing cricket worth watching"

Posted by The_bowlers_Holding on (July 15, 2013, 1:45 GMT)

West Indies really are a poor ODI and test side with big sloggers to win more T20 games than they lose. Afridi is more miss than hit, when he occasionaly gets it right- he kicks ass!

Well done Green team and fantastic performance afridi .... 2 changes to make this weam better would be umar akmal and "GREAT" hafeez swap batting orders with each other and haris sohail replace asad shafiq (good test player but not cut out for odi). Bowling looks fantastic also asad ali is a very good prospect not quick but a cunning bowler.

His done this time and time again, and will do for another 4 years or so. Hasn't he got like the most man of the match awards in ODIs?

Posted by SJRN on (July 15, 2013, 1:12 GMT)

With this performance, Afridi not only helped his team, but helped himself too by achieving quiet a few fates e.g., 1. Second best ODI bowling figures. 2. Best ODI bowling figures from a spinner. 3. Best ODI bowling performance by a Pakistani. 4. Best ODI bowling figures in West Indies. 5.Best ODI bowling figures against West Indies. 6. More than 350 ODI wickets(Only the third Pakistani to do so, OTher two are of course the great two Ws. 7. The only player to score a half century and take five wickets or more in the same match three times.(All others who did t have done it only once). Please amend if needed. PCB should think about 200 times or more before dropping him again. May be we need to learn from Dhoni about his rotation strategy????

Junaid khan taking ten wickets in a match or Saeed Ajmal doing so, we will be proud of their performances but if it is Afridi doing so, it is ecstasy. I know one thing, here in Pakistan we don't praise Afridi, we love him emotionally. He has done so much in the past. And everytime he has played good, he has brought smiles on the faces of his fans. This is so far his fans day today. I am his fan since my childhood I can easily feel the glare in the hearts seeing his comeback like this. I tell you this is the rise of Afridi. There is more to come as it is the end of his career. Trust me all is going to be special now onwards. The Rise of Afridi!

Hope all those Afridi critics will hide for a while now. He is an asset & a special talent. No point in looking for a Dhoni out of him. He plays his game & will win you games single handedly. When he is not doing so, he will make sure that he has not played too badly. Persist with him.

His took will not work no more in future if pakistan bowler will not getting help from wicket- its oneday game not test match , dont put pressure on other player like umar akmal. need imran nazir, ovais and razaq back in team to have best ballance side if pakistan want to be top 1 team

First one day was total Afridi show in batting and bowling. He showed the nation and selectors that he is still match winning all rounder. In second one day Pakistan Bring Haris Sohail at the replace of Asad Shafiq and Junaid Khan at the replace of Wahab Riaz. Pakistani team should play like a unit and keeping it in mind that Afridi alone can. Not change the results of match in every match. Openers and Haffez we want to see their responsibility in ground not politics by professor off field

I'm an Indian fan, but an admirer of the pak team. I hope this game doesn't mean boom boom is permanently back on the team because of this performance. they still have to keep playing the youngsters. it will be like if Sawag has a good game and they drop Dawan for that.

Posted by stark-truth on (July 15, 2013, 0:06 GMT)

This was a resounding slap on the faces of those who refused to admit Afridi's utility for the Pak team. a hallmark of those one-eyed detractors was the insistence that he bats responsibly unlike other Pak batsmen, thereby conveniently bypassing the fact that Afridi is in essence a specialist bowler who can turn matches occasionally with the bat too.

Posted by   on (July 14, 2013, 23:59 GMT)

This performance by Afridi is confounding, especialy against the West Indies in thier home. During the match commentator Jeff Dujon commented three separate times how the West Indians were having trouble adapting to the conditions....Really...at home? Dujon went on to state that the conditions appeared identical to "Lahore" where the Pakistinis are at home....This is most bizzare, Jeff. I think you are mistaking conditions with cricketing skills. pakistan were in the same situation as the WI and went on to build a partnership. However in Dwane Bravo's case it was clear that when the camera shoed his ecpresion at the fall of the third wicket, Brave looked dejected in his body language, as if to say Gayle, Bravo and Charles have gone for nothing, so we are dead. Thus his first ball duck. So Jeff, it is not conditions, because this is Guyana and the WI team have a group of incompetent and unintelligent cricketers.

Posted by Balb on (July 14, 2013, 23:24 GMT)

Big questions for West Indies coach and selectors: Do you consider keeping Pollard in this team?

After seeing how the pitch played and what Afridi did, would the management consider the likes of Bishoo and Permaul?

I can remember the days when the captain had a say in team selection, for example Sobers brought in David Holford. Rohan Kanhai brought in Clive Lloyd and Clive Lloyd recalled Rohan Kanhai for the world cup.

Can Dwayne Bravo ask for Chanderpaul to join this team to strengthen the batting?

On the other hand how many time have we heard honest statements from Dwayne Bravo and Pollard about how they have to review and improve their performances? Now we see that Charles cannot handle genuine pace so what's next?

A lot of questions and a lot of decisions to make or we will see a 5 - 0 series in favour of Pakistan.

Finally, Cameron please make decision and changes as the head of WI board. Fans are hungry to see improve WI performances.

Please remove the twenty/20 players.

Posted by 2.14istherunrate on (July 14, 2013, 23:19 GMT)

I do have to ask what Afridi's cricketing epitaph will be. Too much talent to handle for one player? Basically he has really always been too complex a character to play sport. What is it that makes him tick?

Posted by   on (July 14, 2013, 23:13 GMT)

I dont know what the WI selectors are expecting from Pollard. He is at best a T20 player. Yes, he can win a game by himself, but in the other 8-10 he contributes very little with the bat. His batting reminds me of a village cricketer I knew back in Clarendon Jamaica who was called, Ifakachie Archie. I consider it an insult to the regional team to have Emperors New Clothes Pollard as one of our key batsmen. Working on the assumption that we have three all rounders on the team and we need only one, Sammy is the natural choice to stay. True, Duane Bravo is more talented but he does not deliver as much to the team as Sammy does. With Duane Bravo and Pollard out, I would bring in another specialist batsman who has proven he can fight, and a specialist bowler. I would have Keiran Powell and Shillinford/Gabriel, depending on the wicket, in the side. My team would be Gayle, Charles, DarrenBravo, Samuels, Keiron Powell Simmonds, Sammy, Narine, Roach, Shillingford/Gabriel and Holder. BEAT THAT

Posted by Zeeshan_haidri on (July 14, 2013, 23:10 GMT)

Shahid proved he is a genuine all rounder. His performance is a slap on those who does not believe in merit.

Posted by   on (July 14, 2013, 23:10 GMT)

Pakistan's bowling is the best one right now......if only their batsmen could provide them around 200 runs they have the potential to bulldoze any team in the world........:)

Posted by   on (July 14, 2013, 23:07 GMT)

I have to admit that I was among those who found Aridi's comment about him being better than the rest, laughable. Guess who is laughing now?, This was one of Afridi's golden moments. But don't forget, it was a long time coming. Mohsin Khan was talking as if these performances were routine for the showman Afridi. The truth is, today has sadly become the exception rather than the rule. Lala had been lulled into a slumber until today, when he failed with both bat and ball over and over again..

Posted by nenez on (July 14, 2013, 23:07 GMT)

No WIndies fans should be surprised at this result. its quite clear that WIndies batsmen do not HAVE A CLUE about playing spin, Samuels pathetic innings emphasised this clearly. How does this guy think he will score runs against International spinners when he plays spin as if his feet are stuck in glue Until we get rid of these "bits and pieces" cricketers like Samuels, Pollard, Sammy, and Bravo WHO CANNOT BAT OR BOWL, WIndies will never beat an international side that can play half decent cricket.

Posted by   on (July 14, 2013, 23:06 GMT)

Good Job Pakistan but let us be realistic about Pak's batting, Its very unprofessional and extremely disorganized! We know Afridi batting rocks 1 out of 25 innings so if had Afridi failed in batting, it would have been disastrous batting performance of Pakistan. Luckily it was Afridi day so Pakistan went through batting!

Pakistan batting needs a very professional workout, They are clueless, ugly and unclear how to go about the innings.Focus is required on Pakistani batting

2nd best bowling figures ever in an ODI. Best bowling figures by a Pakistani. WI's lowest total against Pak. 7 runs the lowest by WI to lose first 3 wickets for. 3rd time 50 runs and 5 wickets in an ODI by Afridi, nobody else has even done that twice. wow a big confidence booster for Pak.

Posted by SamWintson92 on (July 14, 2013, 22:45 GMT)

For WI: a) What to say about their batting. Who will replace whom ! I mean seriously Devon Smith who averages just 20 in ODIs & made ducks in CT is the only reserve batsman ! b) Now I really feel Chanderpaul should feature in WC 2015. WI needs his class & temprement desperately c) Sarwan should be offered another chance d) WI just doesn't seem to produce young promising batsman. Names which float around like Kieren Powell has moderate stats. For PAK: a) Afridi showed that he's a match winner b) Hafeez again at 3 ! Made a 0 leaving a Holder delivery which knocked out his stumps. Don't know when Pak will drop him down the order. He should be at 7 after Afridi c) Can't believe Pak left out Harris Sohail. He has performed extra ordinary at the top in Pak domestic. He definitely deserves a run in place of Shafiq d) Want to see Junaid Khan back replacing unfortunate Asad Ali.

I can imagine how the Pak fans would be feeling right now. This is Afridi for you. When he fires he burns every bit of the enemy and when he doesn't fire well bad luck. If only Afridi could finally become a bit more consistent, esp in his batting. But today he was absolutely amazing. There aren't enough adjectives for what he has done today. Wow Afridi Wow.

I am guessing when he was out of the team, he must have consumed some 5 quintals of Ginseng :-p

PS:- For those who may not know, Ginseng is a vitalizing herb, not a banned drug.

It was the best possible come backs by Afridi. It definitely will help him stay in the team for how ever long he wants. BUT, we know that he has already destroyed his own career. He cannot play for his average or his batting stats anymore. He can improve on his bowling stats though. I just hope he provides some kind of consistency, especially in his bowling. I have no expectations from afridi when it comes to his batting because he plays one good innings every 50 odd times he comes out to bat. But well, anyways, BOY he played well today!

Posted by   on (July 14, 2013, 22:31 GMT)

Can hafeez justify his place in team.....no player has given so much chances as hafeez.......had razzaq, imran nazir or asim kamaal got half the favour wot so called prsi called professor got pakistan wud hv been champion team .....

Posted by   on (July 14, 2013, 22:29 GMT)

Hafeez is all style now. Substance has disappeared.

Posted by   on (July 14, 2013, 22:27 GMT)

I wonder who Otis Gibson will blame now.... WI 98 All out. Sarwan was dropped for two failings while his average is higher than the entire WI 11.

Posted by   on (July 14, 2013, 22:24 GMT)

its amazing day for afreedi good performance i think 1 more wicket for him to break the record

Posted by   on (July 14, 2013, 22:22 GMT)

Excellent performance by Afridi and let's hope its sustainable. Please, replace Asad Ali with Junaid Khan, and bring in either Amin or Sohail for Shafiq. Play Hafeez down the order.

Posted by SMAS23 on (July 14, 2013, 22:21 GMT)

wow... what a performance from BOOM BOOM... MASHA ALLAH !!

I still believe he could have been much better through out his whole career, but Lala indeed defines what Pak. cricket actually is. At his day he is a supreme cricketer, i hope he gets his days more often ! Congrats LALA !

Posted by Ra_Thore on (July 14, 2013, 22:18 GMT)

Afraidi will do great this series but fail in the next 4. WI is a battered team right now because all of their batsmen have lost the torque to IPL.

Posted by   on (July 14, 2013, 22:17 GMT)

one of d great come back in odi..

Posted by   on (July 14, 2013, 22:16 GMT)

well done Shahid Afridi. You proved what you said Congrations to you.You are still the best. javed sani usa.

Awesome,Awesome Afridi flattens West Indies

Congratulations Pakistan!!! Congratulations BOOM BOOM and his fans!!! Mind blowing performance!! WI to win against this champion team you guys got to give your 200% and then pray!! Cheers from Indian cricket fan!!

Posted by SaadRocx on (July 14, 2013, 21:27 GMT)

I want to see 2 changes in next game....Junaid Khan in for Wahab and Harris Sohail in for Asad Shafiq (Shafiq is a test Player, he should only play tests)..Hafeez is a pathetic batsman..but still we need him to strengthen the bowling department...They way top 4 gets out was pretty pathetic...Great Bowling performance i must say,Wahab doesn't look threatening on flat or slow wickets and can only bowl wide out-swingers can't bring the bowl in can't reverse no control what so ever and Lala was superb :P this team is certainly much much better than the Champions Trophy team...

Posted by kc69 on (July 14, 2013, 21:21 GMT)

I still remember the words of Afridi stating that he is better than many playing in the current team and what a way to prove it. And as for West Indies they had this match in hands earlier while bowling but it seems like they forgot the basic fact that Shahid Afridi just loves to play slow bowlers Misbah is as usual an anchor for Pakistan batting along with worries about the rest of the batsmen still remain.

Posted by Travian.Cricket on (July 14, 2013, 20:36 GMT)

Afridi looked quite motivated in his innings. The problem is that he doesn't always plays with all of his heart and soul. The top order once again proved to be brittle against swing. And admit it or not, Misbah's innings was very crucial! :)

Posted by   on (July 14, 2013, 19:38 GMT)

Dwayne Bravo bad change of bowling make Pak come back from 24-4 to make 225-9. How the hell did that happened never use Sammy to bowl his 10 but he does and as usual 50 runs off his bowling.

Posted by   on (July 14, 2013, 19:36 GMT)

After today's tremendous batting Shahid Afridi has proved that a hero never fails. This performance is purely a reflection of Shahid Afridi's hardwork and devotion. No matter whether Pakistan wins or looses today, Shahid Afridi has won Billions of hearts.

Posted by   on (July 14, 2013, 19:02 GMT)

Afridi made that clear today that he is still better than many of others. It was a shame for Pakistan to drop him in Champions Trophy. Hafiz should be put in to Check with couple others and Haris Sohail should be given opportunity, there is no point of taking him on the tour if you are not going to give him chance.

Posted by   on (July 14, 2013, 19:01 GMT)

Afridi- proves that dropping and putting players on probation usually reinstills their passion and commitment to the game. Narine- is increasingly proving himself less potent outside the realms of T20 cricket. Local WI umpiring- most annoyingly incompetent.

Posted by 4_Best_Cricket on (July 14, 2013, 18:59 GMT)

In current batting crisis, Misbah's defensive batting approach is worth gold. Pakistan team really needs Misbah. Afridi should be applauded for playing aggressively and well done innings today. If Afridi's batting didn't click today, Pakistan's score would have been much worse as it would have put more pressue on Misbah.

Pakistan batting is failing constantly. May be Pakistani batsmen should go back to playing with the tennis ball so they can clear themselves of any fear.

Pakistan also needs Mohsin Khan as Pakistan performed well under his leadership. Let's hope PCB makes wise decisions.`

Posted by IndvsEngseries on (July 14, 2013, 18:35 GMT)

This total is very low and WI can chase it easily and moreover Pakistan bowling is not so good.

Posted by   on (July 14, 2013, 18:33 GMT)

It seems like PCB will never learn from its past mistakes. Wahab Riaz replacing Junaid Khan? It is time for Hafeez to learn that leaving the ball is not a fashion. This is the second time he got owned for demonstrating careless attitude. Thanks to BOOM BOOM for booming. Guys! Game is not over yet. Westindies stuggled against us last time when we game them 170 target. Lets hope that our bowling will fire back as usual

Posted by Zahidsaltin on (July 14, 2013, 18:27 GMT)

Play Haris Sohail and throw Hafiz out. Time is running out on Nasir Jamshed and Asad Shafiq too. It is a curse of not playing Razzaq which has finished them all off.

Posted by   on (July 14, 2013, 18:26 GMT)

Jason Holder please hold your swing for rest of the series. Afridi played very well but Misbah should work on his strike rate. Needs to improve his strike rate other wise no point if keeping him if he can't win matches. The way WI bowled in 1st 25 overs was impressive. Lets see how many overs Gayle n company takes to chase it down!

Posted by   on (July 14, 2013, 18:24 GMT)

brilliant by afridi and more responsible this time. good recovery from 23/4 to 224/9. thanks to misbah and afridi. misbah was slow but has to go slow as it was sinking and position was hard. poor from top order. nasir got a poor decision by umpire but ahmed , hafeez , asad were poor. i would say try haris. what wrong will he do than these are doing. in last 4 games its almost 3 or 4 down before 50.

WI has got fire power. let us see how pakistan bowlers defend this total

Posted by Kak-mal_Khan on (July 14, 2013, 17:42 GMT)

Very pleased for Afridi innings, Misbah dropped his anchor and kept the sinking ship afloat. Misbah is not ODI batsmen obviously, but his role is vital with current batting crisis, without him we would be seeing total collapse. I just hope the reason for leaving Junaid Khan is not going to prove too costly when defending against the powerfull West Indies hitters. Wahab can easily go for 70+ in his 10 overs

Posted by   on (July 14, 2013, 17:17 GMT)

wat a sunday dis s Ashes hot.holder 4 wicket now boom boom 6 s . .

Posted by   on (July 14, 2013, 17:15 GMT)

This is boom boom show I wish he made 100 runs

Posted by Riz000 on (July 14, 2013, 17:13 GMT)

Can some one please tell me what is HAFEEZ doing in the team for God sake PCB get rid of Hafeez for gooooood!!!!

Posted by   on (July 14, 2013, 17:03 GMT)

today afridi proved he is better than the most booom boom

Posted by   on (July 14, 2013, 16:56 GMT)

Thanks to Shahid Afridi for bringing some fun back to watch this game again. I gave up after 10 overs but now it's getting interesting! Really hope Afridi gets to 100 :)

Posted by   on (July 14, 2013, 16:56 GMT)

misbah too defensive which is affecting the whole pak batting line up... once set he is good enough to dominate, the intent is lacking. being positive does not always mean hitting boundaries but the intent to score of each and every ball should always be there

Posted by   on (July 14, 2013, 16:46 GMT)

if charles can make runs in baseball style luck, so can afridi. Afridi is better striker of ball than charles plus he has wider range of shots

Posted by   on (July 14, 2013, 16:44 GMT)

West Indies will win. All the best.

Posted by hamqad on (July 14, 2013, 16:33 GMT)

Harris Sohail? Why don't we give him a debut? He has been scoring big runs in the domestic circuit, has been around the international squad for a while, yet the management won't give him a look in. For the life of me, I have never seen such a risk averse management. It sickens me to my core!

Posted by IndvsEngseries on (July 14, 2013, 16:26 GMT)

Holder is man of the match for his inspired fast bowling spell and WI win by 6 or 8 wickets. Match decided in first 10 overs. Congrats WI for comfortable victory.

Posted by gsingh7 on (July 14, 2013, 16:26 GMT)

so pak poor showing in ct2013 was just a trailer. they need to put some young batsmen in there instead of misbah and afridi like india did. i am not too sure they have young crop of batsmen ready to play at international level, yet. in this way they can come out of bad spell of losses .

Posted by .......junk on (July 14, 2013, 16:19 GMT)

i dont know how many will agree with me but i believe pakistan need imran nazir to open with jamshed and umar akmal to bat at 3 and afridi at 4 . misbah at 5 hafeez 6 and razzaq or kamran akmal at 7 gul at 8 , amir 9 junaid at 10 then finally ajmal . you can rotate your pacers with wahab and irfan . i beleve this will work.

Posted by roook on (July 14, 2013, 16:17 GMT)

I bet Pakistan U-19 team will give better batting performance than this.

Posted by   on (July 14, 2013, 16:02 GMT)

umar akmal looks most accomplished of the current generation pakistan batsman by a long way and needs to be given a long long run and international level. he might fail today or for a couple of games but he has the firpower to make it through. Shehzad, akmal seem like they are the future of pak batting. and hafeez does not have the heart or the talent to play outside the subcontinent

Posted by   on (July 14, 2013, 15:45 GMT)

What actually gets me is unexperienced umpires and on top of that No DRS. Seriously messes up the fun.

Posted by Jadejafan on (July 14, 2013, 15:44 GMT)

Excellent bowling by the Windies. lol even with the youngsters, Pakistan batsman are still struggling.

Posted by Kak-mal_Khan on (July 14, 2013, 15:24 GMT)

Howler of a decision against Jamshed, could be difference now in managing a decent total. Pakistan should have refused to have played series without DRS. I can confidently say that this Pak team will be having some bad times ahead. Dav Whatmore is not a good coach, he only succeeded with Sri Lanka with the first 15 over blast tactic, and was fortunate to have legendary Jayasuriya, and my favourite wicketkeeper/batsman Kaluwitharana. I will watch on until Misbah gets out, he is only batsman worthy of fan support!

Posted by Sports4Youth on (July 14, 2013, 15:17 GMT)

People comenting here don't get angry on HAFEEZ. It is the captain's fault. Misbah should play Hafeez lower in the batting order. His batting is finished. If he is in the team as an all-rounder then his batting position should be at 6 or 7 at best.

Posted by   on (July 14, 2013, 15:16 GMT)

Just consistency is preventing WI from regaining respect from the international world. If only Gayle, Bravos, Samuel and Pollard can step up their game and be consistant we will be above the world again in ODI.

Posted by Sports4Youth on (July 14, 2013, 15:15 GMT)

@ Khurram S Chaudhry : I agree. ASAD ALI is a good player for TEST matches only, but he has failed a lot in the shorter versions. This will effect his test matches form as well. He should be kept only for test matches.

HARIS SOHAIL was definately a better option for the ODI's.

Posted by   on (July 14, 2013, 15:14 GMT)

Ever since Pakistan hired the Aussie coach......batting technique has actuallly GONE DOWN.....and I think its time for Whatmore to go home he is done too.

Posted by Jawed_Saleem on (July 14, 2013, 15:14 GMT)

Pakistan think tanks need to appreciate that keeping the future of sports, a new look Pakistan team should have been selected and expect to lose few matches than to preserver with "TRIED-TESTED-FAILED EGYPTIAN MUMMIES" ( whose shelf life expired long time back ). Good luck & God be with Pakistan Cricket !

Posted by   on (July 14, 2013, 15:10 GMT)

what happened with these young blood asad shafiq nasir shazad and little oldie hafiz. if Pakistan go with haris shoel umar amin we can see same result what happening today . lot of people commented on asad, ahmed shazad . bring razak, younus, yusuf for some years to guid these young players.

Posted by   on (July 14, 2013, 15:10 GMT)

Is that they have also a reserve-day in pak vs w ind series?

Posted by   on (July 14, 2013, 15:07 GMT)

Left handed Pakistani bowlers and left handed batsmen along-with captain and saeed ajmal, They can do something in favor of Pakistan Cricket team in Caribbean. Rest are inconsistent.

Posted by   on (July 14, 2013, 14:57 GMT)

Well well Ramdin has been his own downfall with his dishonesty which allowed Charles to become an Adam Gilchrist in the making. Great catch Charles just keep your confidence high.

Posted by RANA1610 on (July 14, 2013, 14:55 GMT)

You see, as I told earlier in every report; when Hafeez is in the team, it is difficult to win because of his

Posted by   on (July 14, 2013, 14:55 GMT)

10 overs 4 wickets.

2 just poor shots. infact no shots. ahmed and hafeez leaving it and nasir to the umpire. impact outside off and missing off stump. but again leaving the ball. full credit to the umpire who took ages to decide it.

and brilliant catch to get asad out. holder bowling with discipline.

Posted by EnglishCricket on (July 14, 2013, 14:55 GMT)

Holder looks a really promising young pace bowler. Good start by him even though its against a weak batting line-up. Very young talented team West Indies. Just needs to be consistent even though they have the talent.

Posted by huhohuhohuho on (July 14, 2013, 14:40 GMT)

Why was afridi selected are the young players only selected to warm the benches.

Posted by   on (July 14, 2013, 14:38 GMT)

i think shoulod have gone with haris instead of asad. asad is good but we need to see what has haris got .
