Pakistan in West Indies T20I Series - 1st T20I

West Indies v Pakistan

Pakistan won by 2 wickets (with 0 balls remaining)

Chris Gayle is back opening for West Indies. Once again, can he send one into the ocean? Heavy breeze on. If he can hit with the wind, why not? Pakistan opening with spin. Johnson Charles to take first strike. Here is captain Hafeez. Long-on is back for him

1.55pm Before we start, a look at some of the other most beautiful grounds

1.40pm Only Miran Bakhsh made his Pakistan debut at an age more than Zulfiqar Babar's 34 years and 229 days today

1.30pm Darren Sammy is back leading West Indies. Mohammad Hafeez is Pakistan captain. Hafeez calls heads, it lands tails. West Indies are batting first. He says the pitch looks dry, and will suit their spinners Narine and Badree. Shannon Gabriel comes in. Darren Bravo misses out because he is unwell

Pakistan have handed out two debuts. Umar Amin, Hammad Azam and Zulfiqar Babar are the new faces from the ODIs. The left-arm spinner Babar has to be one of the oldest men to make an international debut for Pakistan

1.15pm Speaking of beautiful grounds, here are some of the prettiest.

This is Arnos Vale's T20I debut. It's a dry pitch, and with such proximity to the sea there of course if going to be a breeze that might hold the ball up when hit in the air. We might see a lot of spin today. Toss in 10 minutes

1pm Arnos Vale has to be one of the most picturesque cricket grounds in the world. One where I would love to play. Would not Viv have hit the ball into the sea had he played here? Will Gayle do so?

The sound of the name Arnos Vale also reminds me of the legendary Pink Floyd song Arnold Layne, although the latter didn't deal with pleasant imagery at all. It's a Saturday afternoon, and hopefully the Vincentians will come out in big numbers for the final leg of what has been a sad season in the West Indies, a season without a Test match against a side other than Zimbabwe. The toss is in half hour

0.1

Mohammad Hafeez to Charles, 1 run, flighted offbreak, neatly punched to long-on for one

0.2

Mohammad Hafeez to Gayle, 1 run, drills the first ball he faces down the ground. There is a long-on in place, though

0.3

Mohammad Hafeez to Charles, OUT, beaten in the flight, and we have timbahhhhh. Hafeez has seen Charles advancing, I think, and he shortens his length. Charles still appears in charge, but he plays the defensive shot for the offbreak. The ball doesn't turn, and hits the off stump

J Charles b Mohammad Hafeez 1 (1m 2b 0x4 0x6) SR: 50.00

Marlon Samuels is the new man in

0.4

Mohammad Hafeez to Samuels, no run, full and flat, defended to cover

Mazher Arshad: "Pakistan made a World Record in their previous T20I which almost went unnoticed. They bowled out South Africa in just 74 balls (12.2 overs), which is least amount of deliveries a team has taken to make the opposition all out, not only in Twenty20s but in 136 years of International Cricket. Previous best: England bowled out South Africa in 75 balls at the Birmingham Test 1924."

0.5

Mohammad Hafeez to Samuels, 1 run, pushed wide of mid-off for a single

0.6

Mohammad Hafeez to Gayle, no run, on a length, just outside off, defended off the front foot

End of over 1 (3 runs) West Indies 3/1 (RR: 3.00)
CH Gayle    1* (2b)      Mohammad Hafeez    1-0-3-1
MN Samuels    1* (2b)

Mohammad Irfan to share the new ball. Spectators still walking in and driving in

1.1

Mohammad Irfan to Samuels, no run, Samuels stays back to a length ball, drives it to cover

1.2

Mohammad Irfan to Samuels, FOUR, short, wide, pretty easy, and cut away to the right of backward point

1.3

Mohammad Irfan to Samuels, 1 run, short of a length, on the stumps, Samuels still manages to open the face and guide it to third man

1.4

Mohammad Irfan to Gayle, FOUR, goes full and fast but also goes too straight, and Gayle nudges it down to fine leg

1.5

Mohammad Irfan to Gayle, no run, short of a length, rising towards the chest, defended in front of the chest

1.6

Mohammad Irfan to Gayle, no run, full, on off, defended from the crease

End of over 2 (9 runs) West Indies 12/1 (RR: 6.00)
CH Gayle    5* (5b 1x4)      Mohammad Irfan    1-0-9-0
MN Samuels    6* (5b 1x4)      Mohammad Hafeez    1-0-3-1

2.1

Mohammad Hafeez to Samuels, no run, full, offbreak, played back to him

2.2

Mohammad Hafeez to Samuels, no run, short of a length, flicked to short midwicket where Afridi's footwork keeps them pinned at their ends

2.3

Mohammad Hafeez to Samuels, no run, topspinner, around off, defended back

2.4

Mohammad Hafeez to Samuels, 1 run, slower, offbreak, seems to have beaten the inside edge and gone for a leg-bye to short fine

2.5

Mohammad Hafeez to Gayle, OUT, Gayle won't be hitting into the sea tonight. Hafeez has got him. Hafeez stays full and around middle and off, Gayle plays a defensive, but the bat is either hidden behind or is playing for an offbreak. This one goes with the angle, and Gayle seems pretty plumb despite that big stride of his

CH Gayle lbw b Mohammad Hafeez 5 (10m 6b 1x4 0x6) SR: 83.33

Lendl Simmons, in good form during the ODIs, is in

2.6

Mohammad Hafeez to Simmons, no run, flighted outside off, defended off the front foot

End of over 3 (1 run) West Indies 13/2 (RR: 4.33)
LMP Simmons    0* (1b)      Mohammad Hafeez    2-0-4-2
MN Samuels    7* (9b 1x4)      Mohammad Irfan    1-0-9-0

3.1

Mohammad Irfan to Samuels, no run, short, not too wide, beats his cut with a little extra bounce

3.2

Mohammad Irfan to Samuels, FOUR, nice shot. This time Samuels makes a slight forward movement, but stands tall as Irfan pitches short and cuts this through point

That point region is reinforced

3.3

Mohammad Irfan to Samuels, FOUR, Doesn't matter the number of fielders. Samuels has split those three fielders in the point region. Backs away a little to create his own room and cut this from the line of off

Irfan goes round the stumps

3.4

Mohammad Irfan to Samuels, no run, Irfan might have gone round the stumps but he is still pitching short, and has been cut away again. This time, though, Shehzad does the fielding at backward point

3.5

Mohammad Irfan to Samuels, no run, spongy bounce this time on the shortish ball. Might have been the slower ball too. Beats his push

3.6

Mohammad Irfan to Samuels, SIX, this time Samuels says you can stack that point region all you want, because I can go over them too. Rises with the bounce, takes this from chest-high, and upper-cuts it over point

End of over 4 (14 runs) West Indies 27/2 (RR: 6.75)
MN Samuels    21* (15b 3x4 1x6)      Mohammad Irfan    2-0-23-0

Debutant Babar to bowl now. Left-arm spin. Has a slip in place

4.1

Zulfiqar Babar to Simmons, no run, goes wide of the crease, angles one in, beats the inside edge, hits the pad, but is headed down leg

4.2

Zulfiqar Babar to Simmons, SIX, not a warm welcome to Babar. He goes wide of the crease again, doesn't try to turn the ball much, and Simmons plays the pick-up shot to send this length ball over wide long-on

4.3

Zulfiqar Babar to Simmons, no run, angling in, defended again

4.4

Zulfiqar Babar to Simmons, OUT, now that one has turned. And the top of off has been hit. Extra revs on this. Babar might have dragged this a little short, but the ball rips away after pitching middle and off, squares Simmons up, and bowls him. Beats him by a long distance too. Bear in mind he is bowling from wide of the crease

LMP Simmons b Zulfiqar Babar 6 (8m 5b 0x4 1x6) SR: 120.00

ODI captain Bravo comes in

4.5

Zulfiqar Babar to Bravo, FOUR, fires into the pads from his wide angle, at 86ks, nicely deflected away fine of short fine leg

4.6

Zulfiqar Babar to Bravo, no run, flighted, but this doesn't turn and hits the inside half of the defensive bat

End of over 5 (10 runs) West Indies 37/3 (RR: 7.40)
DJ Bravo    4* (2b 1x4)      Zulfiqar Babar    1-0-10-1

Errol Erskine: "What does one has to do to be dropped from WI team. Barnwell should be given a chance in the team in place of the ' duck farmer' Pollard"

More spin meanwhile. Saeed Ajmal on. A slip in place

5.1

Saeed Ajmal to Samuels, no run, shortish offbreak, defended in front of off

5.2

Saeed Ajmal to Samuels, no run, flighted, another offbreak, but this one doesn't turn as much as he expects, and is beaten on the outside edge

5.3

Saeed Ajmal to Samuels, no run, stays back to a length-ball offbreak, and nearly chops on

5.4

Saeed Ajmal to Samuels, FOUR, one-handed cover-drive against the turn. This time Samuels finally presses forward, and as he drives this offbreak, the top hand comes off the handle, but he has found the timing and the placement

The slip comes out to reinforce the covers

5.5

Saeed Ajmal to Samuels, no run, flatter, on off, defended back to him

5.6

Saeed Ajmal to Samuels, no run, tossed up outside off, pushed to cover. Wants one but realises he has hit straight to the fielder

End of over 6 (4 runs) West Indies 41/3 (RR: 6.83)
MN Samuels    25* (21b 4x4 1x6)      Saeed Ajmal    1-0-4-0
DJ Bravo    4* (2b 1x4)      Zulfiqar Babar    1-0-10-1

A slip is in now

6.1

Zulfiqar Babar to Bravo, 1 run, Bravo plays for the turn, the ball doesn't, hits the inside half of the bat for a single

6.2

Zulfiqar Babar to Samuels, OUT, huge wicket on debut. Samuels has been hitting every bowler around. And he has been caught-and-bowled. What a debut for Babar. Samuels, like he did with Afridi during the ODIs, charges down, takes this on a half-volley and drills one down the ground. This time, though, he has hit it straight back at Babar, who is alert and quick to take it with both hands. Comes at a comfortable height but an uncomfortable pace. He has hurt his left hand while taking the catch

MN Samuels c & b Zulfiqar Babar 25 (23m 22b 4x4 1x6) SR: 113.63

Babar has a bustling approach to the wicket. If you forget the angle, he almost looks like Kaneria charging in. Meanwhile, here is Kieron Pollard. He gets a silly point too

6.3

Zulfiqar Babar to Pollard, FOUR, Pollard hits back first ball. Length ball, flat, middle and leg, and Pollard drives this between the bowler and mid-on

Mid-on has been moved back

6.4

Zulfiqar Babar to Pollard, 1 run, and had mid-on not been moved back, this would have been an easy catch for him. Pollard drives again, powerfully so, but he can't keep it down. Bounces short of long-on. They take only one despite a diving save at the boundary

6.5

Zulfiqar Babar to Bravo, no run, sharp turn now. Only the second one he has turned today, but that's all you need in T20 if you are accurate. Beaten

6.6

Zulfiqar Babar to Bravo, 1 run, more dozey running. Hit wide of deep cover, but they take just the one

End of over 7 (7 runs) West Indies 48/4 (RR: 6.85)
DJ Bravo    6* (5b 1x4)      Zulfiqar Babar    2-0-17-2
KA Pollard    5* (2b 1x4)      Saeed Ajmal    1-0-4-0

And more spin. Shahid Afridi this time. Don't think they will struggle with over-rate this afternoon

7.1

Shahid Afridi to Bravo, 1 run, short of a length, outside off, punched to deep cover for one

7.2

Shahid Afridi to Pollard, no run, appeal for pad first as this has been fired in at 102ks. Would have been plumb had Pollard not got an inside edge

7.3

Shahid Afridi to Pollard, 1 run, flighted into the pads, worked away to deep midwicket

7.4

Shahid Afridi to Bravo, no run, tossed up, middle and leg, holds its line, hits the pad

7.5

Shahid Afridi to Bravo, 1 run, more unsure running between the Trini boys. This legbreak hits the inside half of the bat, doesn't go too far off the wicket, but Pollard makes a late decision to call him through. Umar Akmal can't hit the stumps at the non-striker's end otherwise we would have had a close appeal

7.6

Shahid Afridi to Pollard, no run, Pollard is not looking comfortable against Afridi. With cement feet he defends a legbreak to cover

End of over 8 (3 runs) West Indies 51/4 (RR: 6.37)
KA Pollard    6* (5b 1x4)      Shahid Afridi    1-0-3-0
DJ Bravo    8* (8b 1x4)      Zulfiqar Babar    2-0-17-2

8.1

Zulfiqar Babar to Bravo, 1 run, pushed wide of point for one

8.2

Zulfiqar Babar to Pollard, no run, length ball, on off, defended to cover

8.3

Zulfiqar Babar to Pollard, 2 runs, Pollard nearly gets himself out. He is not backing himself to play solid cricket. Throws his arms at a length ball, in front of his body, and skies it towards cover. It falls short of the fielder, though

8.4

Zulfiqar Babar to Pollard, no run, this one turns, and past the edge it goes

8.5

Zulfiqar Babar to Pollard, 1 run, arm ball, Pollard plays a late dab, gets a single to short third. Finally, some smooth running

8.6

Zulfiqar Babar to Bravo, no run, flighted outside off, holds its line, bounces too, ad beats the outside edge

End of over 9 (4 runs) West Indies 55/4 (RR: 6.11)
DJ Bravo    9* (10b 1x4)      Zulfiqar Babar    3-0-21-2
KA Pollard    9* (9b 1x4)      Shahid Afridi    1-0-3-0

Mazher Arshad: "Zulfiqar Babar has world record of bowling most economical spell (4-2-3-2) in history of Twenty20 cricket [qualification: four overs]. Playing for Multan Tigers he conceded only three runs in four overs."

9.1

Shahid Afridi to Pollard, no run, cement feet again. Pollard just throws his bat at another, and gets an inside edge to short fine leg

9.2

Shahid Afridi to Pollard, 1 run, flighted, on middle and leg, this time he bunts it to leg for one

9.3

Shahid Afridi to Bravo, 1 run, quick legbreak, but a little short. Punched to long-off for one

Crowd still walking in. I hear there is an after-match party that is more exciting

9.4

Shahid Afridi to Pollard, 1 run, driven to deep cover for one

9.5

Shahid Afridi to Bravo, 1 run, he has nudged this to leg, from middle and off. That excites the fielders a bit

9.6

Shahid Afridi to Pollard, SIX, finally an overpitched delivery, and that is in Pollard's zone. He has smoked it clean back over Afridi's head.

Ajmal is back

10.1

Saeed Ajmal to Bravo, no run, sharp offbreak, cramps him up. Defended

10.2

Saeed Ajmal to Bravo, FOUR, Jamshed misfields at the boundary. Punched to the right of deep point, Jamshed gets there, but is slow in getting down

10.3

Saeed Ajmal to Bravo, no run, another offbreak that doesn't turn as much as expected, and beats the outside edge

10.4

Saeed Ajmal to Bravo, no run, fuller, flatter, hits the pad, deflects to the keeper

10.5

Saeed Ajmal to Bravo, no run, defended back to him

11.1

Shahid Afridi to Pollard, 1 run, quick legbreak, Pollard is a little surprised. Goes off the outside half of the bat for one

11.2

Shahid Afridi to Bravo, 2 byes, another quick legbreak, wide outside off, beats his drive, but goes for two byes off Akmal's glove

11.3

Shahid Afridi to Bravo, 1 run, short of a length, outside off, punched to deep point

11.4

Shahid Afridi to Pollard, 1 run, short of a length, turns from outside leg to outside off, punched into the deep

11.5

Shahid Afridi to Bravo, 2 runs, flighted on middle and leg, bunted into the leg side, towards deep midwicket, they come back for two. Afridi is not happy with the fielders. "Tum toh jawan ladke ho yaar," Afridi tells them all. [You are young boys. Should do better.]

11.6

Shahid Afridi to Bravo, 1 run, chipped over cover for a single

End of over 12 (8 runs) West Indies 77/4 (RR: 6.41)

12.3

Saeed Ajmal to Pollard, 1 run, flat offbreak, punched to midwicket for one

12.4

Saeed Ajmal to Bravo, no run, full, flat, outside off, defended to cover. Pollard, who is not looking, is hit on the shoulder. The throw is soft, though

12.5

Saeed Ajmal to Bravo, 1 run, short of a length, outside off, played with an open face for one

12.6

Saeed Ajmal to Pollard, FOUR, just a flick but this is a half-volley, and Pollard doesn't spare half-volleys. Drilled back over Ajmal's head

13.4

Shahid Afridi to Bravo, 1 run, tossed up on middle and off, doesn't turn enough, hits the inside half of the bat for one

13.5

Shahid Afridi to Pollard, 2 runs, slower, but a little short, and has been punched away nicely, with the turn, and past point for two

13.6

Shahid Afridi to Pollard, no run, tossed up wide, Pollard drives with no feet, and is beaten. Afridi's allotment is over. Run-a-ball and wicketless

Junaid Khan finally into the attack. Like Umar Gul used to

14.1

Junaid Khan to Bravo, no run, short of a length, on off, defended

14.2

Junaid Khan to Bravo, 1 run, short-arm pull. Lovely flair-full shot, but Bravo has presumed this has gone for four. Amin surprises him with a dive at deep midwicket. And the Trini boys have just taken one presuming it has gone for four

14.3

Junaid Khan to Pollard, no run, full and on off, pushed back to him

14.4

Junaid Khan to Pollard, FOUR, full, angling into the pads, nicely wristed away through square leg for four. Pollard has punished everything that has been loose today

14.5

Junaid Khan to Pollard, 1 leg bye, short of a length, stays low, beats his pull, draws an lbw appeal, but it is still bouncing over

14.6

Junaid Khan to Bravo, 1 leg bye, dug in short again, Bravo is in the air trying to work this to leg. Is beaten, but takes the leg-bye

15.1

Zulfiqar Babar to Bravo, no run, and he gets turn and bounce as he bowls slowly, and beats his outside edge

15.2

Zulfiqar Babar to Bravo, 1 run, this one angles in, goes off the inside half of the bat

15.3

Zulfiqar Babar to Pollard, 1 run, short of a length, turning away, punched down to long-off for one

15.4

Zulfiqar Babar to Bravo, no run, short again, but this time he finds the straight extra cover

15.5

Zulfiqar Babar to Bravo, OUT, Bravo tries a really difficult shot. The back-foot drive over cover for six. If there is any man who hits it in today's cricket, it is Bravo. This time, though, he has taken on too much even though he has hit it with the wind. Ajmal moves to his right at deep cover to complete the catch. Taken over his shoulder with the wind taking the ball away

16.2

Junaid Khan to Sammy, 1 run, Sammy looks to pull, gets a bottom edge onto the hip

16.3

Junaid Khan to Pollard, no run, yorker. Accurate. Dug out. Perfect delivery

16.4

Junaid Khan to Pollard, FOUR, lucky runs. Pollard swings and swings hard, but all he manages is an inside edge that drags this from wide outside off to send it fine of short fine leg

16.5

Junaid Khan to Pollard, 1 leg bye, short of a length, into the pads, tucked away for a single

16.6

Junaid Khan to Sammy, FOUR, swirling hit. That is some power. This is a half-volley. Sammy goes deep into the crease to bulldoze it back. Starts on the leg side of the stumps at the non-striker's end, but swerves so much with the force that it ends up at long-off

AJmal to bowl his final over. Starts round the wicket

17.1

Saeed Ajmal to Pollard, 5 wides, Pakistan don't want this. Offbreak that starts outside leg, and turns enough to beat Akmal to go for five wides

It is raining. The sun is out. Jackals are getting married. A sunshower

17.1

Saeed Ajmal to Pollard, 1 run, pushed wide of cover for one

3.19pm As no expected, it is raining again

3.18pm As expected it was just a passing shower, and we are back on

3.07pm This one doesn't look like a long shower, but we are going off the field. Looks like a short, sharp shower

3.20pm Anyway we resume despite the rain. Ajmal to bowl round the stumps

17.2

Saeed Ajmal to Sammy, no run, flighted outside off, angles away to beat the outside edge

17.3

Saeed Ajmal to Sammy, 1 run, shortish, tucked away off the hip

17.5

17.6

Junaid to bowl. So either Irfan or Hafeez will bowl the 20th

18.1

Junaid Khan to Pollard, 1 run, full, angling in, mowed to deep midwicket

18.2

Junaid Khan to Sammy, SIX, Sammy has picked the slower ball early, sized it up, and smoked it out. He pushes the weight onto the back foot, gets under the length ball, and smashes this over wide long-on. Somebody return the ball please

18.3

Junaid Khan to Sammy, 1 wide, wide full toss. This is clearly a wide, but Nero raises the batsmen's eyebrows by calling it very late

18.3

Junaid Khan to Sammy, no run, another full toss but this time it is closer to off, and does the job well: to stay away from Sammy, who is backing away

3.43pm We are back now. Rain has stopped

3.25pm Oh no, it is raining again. The covers are coming on again. How predictably unpredictable the weather so close to sea is

3.44pm Junaid to resume

18.4

Junaid Khan to Sammy, SIX, dropped by Amin. This is full, into the pads, and has been lofted towards the cow corner. Amin comes around from deep midwicket, the catch is high to his left, but he has parried it over the bar

18.5

Junaid Khan to Sammy, FOUR, Junaid looks to go full and wide as Sammy looks to back away, but the batsman does well to drill this wide of cover for four

18.6

Junaid Khan to Sammy, 2 runs, slower ball, bunted into the leg side, straight to deep midwicket, but Sammy is one of the best with converting ones into twos. He puts his head down, and takes what seems a suicidal second. The throw is flat, full, stump high, and straight, but Sammy has beaten it

Irfan to bowl the last over, which means Hafeez has bowled only two. Round the stumps

19.1

Mohammad Irfan to Pollard, SIX, short of a length, Pollard seems to be expecting it, backs away and lofts it over wide long-on for six

19.2

Mohammad Irfan to Pollard, 2 runs, full toss, into the pads, wide of long-on, and even though Sammy has dropped his bat a misfield allows them a second

19.3

Mohammad Irfan to Pollard, 1 run, finally a yorker. Dug out. Sammy is backing up a long way. He is halfway up the wicket when the ball touches bat. Easy single for him

19.4

Mohammad Irfan to Sammy, SIX, yorker gone wrong. Knee-high full toss. There is no room, but somehow Sammy has lofted this clean over long-on for a six. He keeps pumping his fist after every such shot

19.5

Mohammad Irfan to Sammy, OUT, this time he has gone into the wind. Irfan goes short, Sammy goes hard, and hooks with the front leg in the air. The wind holds it up, though, and he is taken at deep midwicket

DJG Sammy c Hammad Azam b Mohammad Irfan 30 (17m 14b 2x4 3x6) SR: 214.28

Narine is the new man in, but he won't have to face

19.6

Mohammad Irfan to Pollard, 1 run, OUT, poor from Narine. This is hit down the ground, to the left of long-on, and there is no way the non-striker shouldn't make it for the second. Sammy would have made this comfortably. Narine is run out by a mile. Had he been as intentful as Sammy, he might have got Pollard a deserved fifty

SP Narine run out 0 (2m 0b 0x4 0x6) SR: -

3.52pm Zulfiqar Babar gets to lead Pakistan off the field. He bowled superbly, but some poor fielding, some questionable captaincy and some big hitting by Sammy and Pollard have taken West Indies to what looks like a comfortable total. This is a turning dry pitch on which spinners have bowled 14 overs for 74 runs and five wickets. The other six, bowled by the quicks, have gone for 73. And Hafeez's own figures read 2-0-4-2.

Not to take away from Pollard and Sammy, though. Pollard came into bat at 42 for 4, and took toll of every poor delivery. Then Sammy just ran away with it with 30 off 14. We will be back soon with the chase

End of over 20 (16 runs) West Indies 152/7
KA Pollard    49* (36b 4x4 2x6)      Mohammad Irfan    3-0-39-1
     Junaid Khan    3-0-34-0
