South Africa tour of West Indies, 1st T20I: West Indies v South Africa at North Sound, May 19, 2010

13.56pm Right, toss news: West Indies won the toss and are going to field first. That's probably the right decision, as the Sir Vivian Richards stadium at North Sound has been stripped bare and relaid, and so one can't be quite sure how it will play. Best, then, to let the South Africans have a go first and have a good look at how the wicket plays.

The big surprise in the West Indies team line-up - no Shivnarine Chanderpaul. For the South Africans two players who didn't feature at all in their World Twenty20 campaign - Alviro Petersen and Ryan McLaren - come in to the side.

Hello, and a warm welcome to Cricinfo's coverage of the first game of South Africa's tour of the Caribbean. We start with a Twenty20, and with both teams desperate to get some positive results after disappointing campaigns in the World Twenty20, where both crashed out in the Super Eights, this is sure to be a hard-fought encounter. I'm Liam Brickhill, and, together with my esteemed colleague Sahil Dutta, will be bringing you live commentary from the first two games of the tour.

While we wait for news of the toss and team line-ups to come through, why not join the battle-royale that is Cricinfo's Facebook page. There's also Andrew Miller's preview to look at, in case you're wondering about the team news leading up to today's game.

Roach to Smith, no run, full, wide and snaking away from the left-hander first ball, and Smith leaves well alone

Roach to Smith, 1 run, on target this time, spearing the ball at off stump. Smith taps softly towards mid off and they set off - South Africa are up and running!

Roach to Bosman, 5 no balls, woah! Roach dug that in half way done and the ball really ballooned up, way way over Bosman's head and over the keeper too and away for byes. What's more, he overstepped so this'll be a free hit

Roach to Bosman, 2 runs, slashed away over backward point, third man sprints in to cut it off and fires in a quick return

Roach to Bosman, no run, on a length on off stump, Bosman moves confidently forward to defend the ball to the off side with a resounding crack off the bat

Roach to Bosman, 2 runs, full and squeezed out just to Pollard's right at point, they scamper two

Roach to Bosman, no run, slapped very hard behind square on the off side and Pollard dives to his right to pull off a great stop. Good, clean fielding effort there, saving four runs

End of over 1 (10 runs) South Africa 10/0 (RR: 10.00)

    • LE Bosman 4 (5b)
    • GC Smith 1 (2b)
    • KAJ Roach 1-0-10-0

Taylor to Smith, no run, edged! But it falls well short of Fletcher, who has now come up a couple of yards

Taylor to Smith, no run, there's some bounce! Smith is comprehensively beaten outside off stump by pace and bounce from Taylor

Taylor to Smith, no run, big shout! Smith walked down the pitch and the ball struck him on the pads, looked like a good shout but he's probably been saved by the fact he was well down the wicket

Taylor to Smith, no run, chopped down on the off side, they don't risk a sneaky single

Taylor to Smith, no run, short and wide from Taylor, but the wicket appears to be playing slow and the ball takes an age to get to Smith, who cuts hard down towards point

Taylor to Smith, 2 runs, too full, pushed through the covers and they run two to spoil what would've been a maiden

End of over 2 (2 runs) South Africa 12/0 (RR: 6.00)

    • GC Smith 3 (8b)
    • LE Bosman 4 (5b)
    • JE Taylor 1-0-2-0
    • KAJ Roach 1-0-10-0

There's a touch of swing, but the wicket seems good for batting so far, if a little on the slow, low side

Roach to Bosman, no run, full and swinging in a touch, defended on the off side

Roach to Bosman, 2 runs, good pace from Roach, hurrying Bosman into the shot on the off side

Roach to Bosman, no run

Roach to Bosman, no run, sharp bouncer! Bosman just about swayed away in time, but that fairly whizzed past his helmet

The wicket seems a little two-paced, some balls shooting through with pace and bounce and others dying in the pitch

Roach to Bosman, no run, back and across in defence

Roach to Bosman, 1 run, close! Chipped in the air by Bosman, towards midwicket but dropping just short of Benn. They steal a run while the return comes in

End of over 3 (3 runs) South Africa 15/0 (RR: 5.00)

    • LE Bosman 7 (11b)
    • GC Smith 3 (8b)
    • KAJ Roach 2-0-13-0
    • JE Taylor 1-0-2-0

Taylor to Bosman, OUT, what's happened here? Taylor slammed one in back of a length, Bosman went to pull and appeared to glove it down the leg side, where Fletcher took a good, tumbling catch. The Umpire then signalled wide... but Bosman walks! Bizarre

LE Bosman c †Fletcher b Taylor 7 (12m 12b 0x4 0x6) SR: 58.33

Taylor to Kallis, 1 leg bye, shaping in to Kallis's legs, the batsman walks across and angles the ball fine down the leg side, they run a single

Taylor to Smith, 1 run, steepling bounce now from Taylor, and Smith plays the ball down awkwardly off his chin down towards third man

Taylor to Kallis, no run, just a hint of an appeal from Taylor this time as the ball darts in to the batsman's pads, but he get's a little inside edge and the appeal is quickly quashed

Taylor to Kallis, no run, slower bouncer from Taylor, and Kallis didn't pick that one at all. He was through with the shot before the ball had even got to him, and took a painful blow under the armpit

Taylor to Kallis, no run, pushed defensively into the leg side, where midwicket sprints in to negate any thoughts of a single

End of over 4 (2 runs) South Africa 17/1 (RR: 4.25)

    • JH Kallis 0 (4b)
    • GC Smith 4 (9b)
    • JE Taylor 2-0-3-1
    • KAJ Roach 2-0-13-0

Change in the attack now, as Sulieman Benn comes in

Benn to Smith, 1 run, he starts with a huge, looping full toss, but Smith can't capitalise on that. He slaps straight to mid off, and they sprint through for one

Benn to Kallis, no run, watchfully pushed into the covers by Kallis, no run

Benn to Kallis, 1 run, close! Kallis bent down to sweep, getting a top edge. Bravo sprinted back from square leg and leapt, full-length, but just couldn't get to it

Benn to Smith, no run, Smith backs away to give himself room to cut, but is beaten by the bounce. The alarming bounce is fortunate, in the end, as the ball bounces over the stumps after beating the bat

Benn to Smith, 1 run, slapped to point's left, where the fielder pulls off an athletic diving stop, but can't stop the run

Benn to Kallis, no run, down the wicket and smacked back to the bowler

End of over 5 (3 runs) South Africa 20/1 (RR: 4.00)

    • JH Kallis 1 (7b)
    • GC Smith 6 (12b)
    • SJ Benn 1-0-3-0
    • JE Taylor 2-0-3-1

Taylor to Smith, no run, Smith charges down the track and is undone by a slower cutter from Taylor. The ball bounced more than he expected and gripped a little on the surface, striking the arm or the body and trickling to the keeper's left

Taylor to Smith, FOUR, well, Smith didn't have to move his feet for that one. Low full toss from Taylor and Smith clipped it firmly to deep imidwicket. Sammy sprinted round the boundary but couldn't quite cut it off

Taylor to Smith, FOUR, Smith is finding some rhythm now! Crunched straight back over Taylor's head this time, authoritative shot there from the South African captain

Taylor to Smith, 1 run, another slower bouncer from Taylor, real tennis-ball bounce in this pitch but Smith rocks back to get on top of the ball, rolling his wrists over a pull to keep it down. They sprint one

Taylor to Kallis, no run, Kallis makes some room, moving to leg and Taylor follows him, no run the result

Taylor to Kallis, FOUR, runs this time! The South Africans are starting to become accustomed to the pace and bounce - or lack thereof - in this pitch. It was short again from Taylor, quicker this time, but Kallis was smoothly back in the crease to hammer a pull powerfully in the air towards wide long on

End of over 6 (13 runs) South Africa 33/1 (RR: 5.50)

    • JH Kallis 5 (9b 1x4)
    • GC Smith 15 (16b 2x4)
    • JE Taylor 3-0-16-1
    • SJ Benn 1-0-3-0

Benn to Smith, 1 run, fired in to the pads, Smith gets across to work the ball to fine leg

Benn to Kallis, 2 runs, Kallis gets low down to paddle sweep, and they sprint through for two as the fielder is a little slow to get round on the boundary. Benn gives him a little gee-up for his efforts

Benn to Kallis, no run, reverse sweep from Kallis this time, but he's missed it completely

Benn to Kallis, 2 runs, gives himself some room this time and slashes wildly down to third man. That was a six-or-sticks shot, and they pick up two as he top edges

Benn to Kallis, no run, quick through the air from Benn, Kallis punches into the covers

Benn to Kallis, 1 run, and again, but this time he just about picked the gap - or at least didn't hit it straight to the fielder, and they scamper through for one

End of over 7 (6 runs) South Africa 39/1 (RR: 5.57)

    • JH Kallis 10 (14b 1x4)
    • GC Smith 16 (17b 2x4)
    • SJ Benn 2-0-9-0
    • JE Taylor 3-0-16-1

Sammy in to the attack now, he should be a handful on this wicket with his height, swing and variations

Sammy to Kallis, 1 run, Kallis opens the face to send a length ball on off stump down to third man. Very little bounce on that one, really dying in the pitch

Sammy to Smith, 1 run, on the hips, and flicked out to deep square leg for one

Sammy to Kallis, no run, now there's some bounce! Awkwardly played by Kallis, who had charged down the pitch and tried to flay the ball through the off side, but couldn't connect at all

really mottled look to the pitch, some patches perhaps a bit harder than others

Sammy to Kallis, 1 run, back of a length again, Kallis drops the ball into the covers and they scramble one

Sammy to Smith, no run, ugly swipe across the line from Smith, but this time the ball has dribbled through very low and he misses completely. Sammy can see the funny side, but Smith is a little nonplussed

Sammy to Smith, FOUR, same shot from Smith, this time he's nailed it! Smeared across the line by the burly left-hander, and he's found the gap at wide long on to pick up four valuable runs on a wicket where runs have been hard to come by

End of over 8 (7 runs) South Africa 46/1 (RR: 5.75)

    • GC Smith 21 (20b 3x4)
    • JH Kallis 12 (17b 1x4)
    • DJG Sammy 1-0-7-0
    • SJ Benn 2-0-9-0

Benn to Kallis, 2 runs, speared in to the pads from round the wicket, Kallis sweeps hard, beating short fine leg, but the fielder on the square leg boundary comes round to keep them to two

Benn to Kallis, no run, slapped into the off side, no run

Benn to Kallis, SIX, hammered! Kallis committed himself to the slog sweep and struck the ball sweetly off the middle of the bat to send it sailing over midwicket and into the crowd. Big shot!

Benn to Kallis, 1 run, slashed square, and they pick up one to the cover sweeper

Benn to Smith, 1 run, same shot, different batsman, as Smith makes room to cut the ball hard out to the cover sweeper

Benn to Kallis, 1 run, very full and bunted down the ground by Kallis, they pick up one to long on

End of over 9 (11 runs) South Africa 57/1 (RR: 6.33)

    • JH Kallis 22 (22b 1x4 1x6)
    • GC Smith 22 (21b 3x4)
    • SJ Benn 3-0-20-0
    • DJG Sammy 1-0-7-0

Sammy to Kallis, 1 run, alarming, tennis-ball bounce there! Kallis recovered well though, swaying back and opening the face on the bat to send the ball up and over to third man

Sammy to Smith, 1 run, Smith clears the front leg and hoicks across the line, but can't quite get the timing so only one run is the result

Sammy to Kallis, no run, that looked like the cutter from Sammy, Kallis kept his eye on it and pushed defensively to extra cover

Sammy to Kallis, no run, again the ball bounces up alarmingly, and Kallis is completely undone by it this time! He veered out of the way of the ball, and somehow Fletcher got a glove to it, otherwise that would have been four byes.

Sammy to Kallis, 1 run, Kallis pulls in the air, and the ball just clears the fielder! That was a real spliced shot, didn't go anywhere, but luckily for Kallis it beat the fielder

Sammy to Smith, 1 run, again Smith smears across the line, and picks up one to long on

slow going so far from South Africa, but this is an awkward pitch to make runs on, really not easy at all with variations in the pace and bounce on a patchy wicket

End of over 10 (4 runs) South Africa 61/1 (RR: 6.10)

    • GC Smith 24 (23b 3x4)
    • JH Kallis 24 (26b 1x4 1x6)
    • DJG Sammy 2-0-11-0
    • SJ Benn 3-0-20-0

Dwayne Bravo comes in to the attack now

Bravo to Smith, 2 runs, and Smith greets him by dancing out to take a length ball on the half volley and swing it out behind square on the leg side. The ball slows up on the outfield though, so only two runs conceded

Bravo to Smith, 1 run, Smith backs away now, and Bravo pulls his length back. The batsman aims a meaty pull through the leg side, finds the fielder, but they sprint through all the same

Bravo to Kallis, SIX, well, Kallis had no trouble getting that one out the middle! The ball was full and he came forward and pushed wristily through the line to send the ball sailing away, with the wind, over deep midwicket. A superb shot on a difficult wicket

Bravo to Kallis, 3 runs, more runs, as Kallis clips onto the leg side, but the fielder cuts the shot off on the boundary and they run three

Bravo to Smith, 1 leg bye, Smith backs away to leg and Bravo follows him, beating the bat but they run one as the ball bobbles down the leg side off the pad

Bravo to Kallis, 1 wide, not pretty from Bravo, big, big wide down the off side and Fletcher has done really well to cut that off while standing up to the stumps

Bravo to Kallis, 1 run, back of a length, Kallis gives himself room to slash this one down to third man

End of over 11 (15 runs) South Africa 76/1 (RR: 6.90)

    • JH Kallis 34 (29b 1x4 2x6)
    • GC Smith 27 (26b 3x4)
    • DJ Bravo 1-0-14-0
    • DJG Sammy 2-0-11-0

Chris Gayle brings himself on now, no sign of Nikita Miller

Gayle to Kallis, 1 run, smacked down to long on, and they amble through

Gayle to Smith, SIX, Smith has his eye in now! Just a little floaty from Gayle, Smith went for a full-blooded slog sweep. The deep midwicket fielder was interested for a while, but the ball went miles over his head and into the crowd

Gayle to Smith, 2 runs, again Smith tries to slog sweep, this time the ball comes off the inside edge and goes very fine on the leg side

Gayle to Smith, 1 run, ooh, chance for a run out there! They set off for a single but the ball had gone almost straight to Bravo, who fired in a throw at the stumps with Smith well short, but couldn't hit them!

Gayle to Kallis, 1 run, Kallis backs away with Gayle coming round the wicket, pushing the ball out on the leg side. They decide against two

Gayle to Smith, 1 run, crunched down the ground to long on

End of over 12 (12 runs) South Africa 88/1 (RR: 7.33)

    • GC Smith 37 (30b 3x4 1x6)
    • JH Kallis 36 (31b 1x4 2x6)
    • CH Gayle 1-0-12-0
    • DJ Bravo 1-0-14-0

Miller to Smith, OUT, Gone! Smith falls to Miller's first ball! He tried the reverse sweep, missed it and over-balanced and Fletcher whipped the bails off. But hang on, replays show that Smith's foot was still balanced when the bails came off. He's walked off though, so I suppose that's a wicket, and West Indies won't mind one little bit

GC Smith st †Fletcher b Miller 37 (52m 31b 3x4 1x6) SR: 119.35

Miller to de Villiers, no run, pushed softly into the covers, no run

Miller to de Villiers, no run, straighter this time from Miller, coming round the wicket, but de Villiers can't find placement on the leg side

Miller to de Villiers, 1 run, nudged very fine on the leg side, Kallis calls him through for a sprinted single

Miller to Kallis, 1 run, chopped down fine on the off side as Kallis gives himself room

Miller to de Villiers, no run, speared at the toes, de Villiers tries to paddle it fine but misses and is struck on the foot. Missing leg stump though, and no appeal at all

End of over 13 (2 runs) South Africa 90/2 (RR: 6.92)

    • AB de Villiers 1 (4b)
    • JH Kallis 37 (32b 1x4 2x6)
    • NO Miller 1-0-2-1
    • CH Gayle 1-0-12-0

Pollard to Kallis, 1 run, the ball spits up off a length, the batsman hangs back deep in the crease with the keeper up and plays it down just to short third man's left

The keeper goes back now

Pollard to de Villiers, 1 run, back of a length from Pollard again, nudged down on the leg side and they sprint through

Pollard to Kallis, 1 run, Kallis moves to leg, Pollard follows him but he goes through with the shot to send the ball out to deep square leg

Pollard to de Villiers, 1 wide, big wide from Pollard, pushing the ball very wide of off stump

Pollard to de Villiers, 1 run, drop and run from de Villiers now, as the ball bobbles behind square and they sprint through

Pollard to Kallis, no run, Kallis goes for the double-bluff, telegraphing a movement to leg and then shuffling to off, but Pollard doesn't fall for it and the subsequent drive into the covers is immediately cut off

Pollard to Kallis, 1 run, pushed into the covers again, this time hit just softly enough that they have time to steal a run. Kallis keeps struck, and another run to the total

End of over 14 (6 runs) South Africa 96/2 (RR: 6.85)

    • JH Kallis 40 (36b 1x4 2x6)
    • AB de Villiers 3 (6b)
    • KA Pollard 1-0-6-0
    • NO Miller 1-0-2-1

Miller to Kallis, no run, Kallis goes for a huge swipe to leg and meets nothing but fresh air. Miller is less than impressed

Miller to Kallis, 1 run, a less expansive sweep this time, and they pick up one to deep square leg

Miller to de Villiers, 1 run, driven in the air inside-out over cover, the sweeper cleans up and they take one

Miller to Kallis, SIX, there's a shot from Kallis! The ball was pitched up on off stump, he cleared the front leg and swung through the line, getting a good, clean connection to send the ball up and over long off

Miller to Kallis, 2 runs, crunched down the ground, very straight but the long on fielder gets round in time to cut it off

Miller to Kallis, 1 run, pushed into the off side, they set off and make it, and that's fifty for Kallis! A really good effort on a pitch that looks difficult to survive on, let alone make runs

End of over 15 (11 runs) South Africa 107/2 (RR: 7.13)

    • JH Kallis 50 (41b 1x4 3x6)
    • AB de Villiers 4 (7b)
    • NO Miller 2-0-13-1
    • KA Pollard 1-0-6-0

Pollard to Kallis, no run, once again the ball leaps up off a length, Kallis taps back to the bowler

Pollard to Kallis, 2 runs, width given outside off stump, Kallis aims a mow over the covers and ends up sending the ball up off the top edge and down to third man

Pollard to Kallis, 1 run, full, Kallis drives and inside-edges, they steal one to short fine leg

Pollard to de Villiers, 1 run, cutter from Pollard, de Villiers pulls off the front foot out to square leg

Pollard to Kallis, OUT, Kallis falls! Big, big wicket for West Indies, and Pollard is the man that has done it for them. The ball was back of a length and straight, Kallis tried to pull and presumably was aiming for a maximum, but he was hitting into the wind and didn't get a good connection. Sarwan ran in and held onto a regulation chance

JH Kallis c Sarwan b Pollard 53 (51m 45b 1x4 3x6) SR: 117.77

Pollard to de Villiers, 1 wide, well, not great follow-up to the wicket there. Massive wide down the off side

Pollard to de Villiers, 2 runs, that's much better, a slower offcutter from Pollard. Though they've taken two from a solid punch to wide long on, the ball was full and aimed at the stumps

End of over 16 (7 runs) South Africa 114/3 (RR: 7.12)

    • AB de Villiers 7 (9b)
    • JP Duminy 0 (0b)
    • KA Pollard 2-0-13-1
    • NO Miller 2-0-13-1

Pace comes back into the attack in the form of Kemar Roach

Roach to Duminy, 1 wide, he's just erred in line to start with, sending a short ball just a touch too far down leg

Roach to Duminy, OUT, what a comeback! They obviously had a plan to target Duminy's leg stump here, once again the ball was fired toward the leg stump from over the wicket, Duminy walked too far across in trying to work the ball to leg and his stumps went for a walk! West Indies celebrate, and that's another wicket at the wrong time for South Africa

JP Duminy b Roach 0 (1m 1b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Roach to Botha, no run, sharp start to the new batsman, fast and on a length but he's back and across in solid defence

Roach to Botha, OUT, vicious pace and bounce off the pitch, and Botha has gloved one! That was a brute of a delivery, Both stuck his hand up in self-preservation as the ball spat up at him, the ball looped up off the glove and Fletcher scooted round to take an easy catch. Roach is on fire here, another wicket for West Indies!

J Botha c †Fletcher b Roach 0 (1m 2b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Roach to de Villiers, 1 run, much fuller this time, and chopped down to third man with minimal foot movement

Roach to Petersen, 1 leg bye, Petersen is undone by some sharp pace and movement in from Roach, taking the ball on the thigh pad. They sprint through for one all the same

Roach to de Villiers, 2 runs, slapped out into the covers, and they charge through for two while the throw comes in. Almost overthrows there, not the greatest return to Fletcher

End of over 17 (5 runs) South Africa 119/5 (RR: 7.00)

Pollard to Petersen, no run, bouncer from Pollard, Petersen went to pull but is beaten by some extra bounce. That looked like it went over the batsman's head, but not given as a wide

Pollard to Petersen, 1 run, angling in to the pads this time, and flicked to fine leg's right

Pollard to de Villiers, 1 run, pushed down the ground, and though de Villiers and Petersen are lightning-quick between the wickets they decide against two

Pollard to Petersen, 1 run, full and at the toes, clipped in the air out to deep square leg

Pollard to de Villiers, no run, de Villiers backs away, giving himself acres of room, and Pollards floats up a slower one, beating the batsman's wild slash

Pollard to de Villiers, OUT, another slower cutter, another wicket for Pollard! de Villiers was aiming straight down the ground, but sliced at the ball just a little, putting more height than distance in the shot, and long off barely had to move in taking the catch

Roach to McLaren, 1 run, spicy delivery, back of a length and up into the ribs, but McLaren gets across to drop it on the leg side and they scramble a run

Roach to Petersen, no run, crunched across the line by Petersen, who got a good connection but found the fielder with the shot

Roach to Petersen, FOUR, nice shot there! Petersen picked the length early, swivelling back to pull handsomely out to deep square leg. The placement and timing were perfect there, and four runs the result

Roach to Petersen, OUT, well, another wicket! After all the criticism levelled at him, that's a smart piece of work from Fletcher. The ball was missed by the batsman and came through to him on the bounce, Petersen thought about stealing a bye but Fletcher threw down the stumps with a direct hit that found him well short

Last over coming up, and you'd have to say South Africa's total is already a competitive one on this wicket. How much more can they add?

Pollard to van der Merwe, 1 run, short and angled down to short third man. The fielder is there but they charge through regardless

Pollard to McLaren, no run, McLaren goes for a massive swipe over the leg side but misses completely

Pollard to McLaren, no run, and again! McLaren is aiming to send the ball into a low orbit here, but he can't lay bat on it

Pollard to McLaren, 2 runs, he goes down to sweep the cutter this time, and some really sharp running gets them two runs. They could've been in trouble there with a better throw, but at this stage you've got to just go for it

Pollard to McLaren, 1 run, top-edged drive down the ground falls short of long off and they charge through

Pollard to van der Merwe, 2 runs, van der Merwe shapes to play some sort of bizarre reverse-pull, Pollard fires down a cutter back of a length and the batsman gets glove/splice on it. The ball loops up and over the keeper, and third man (or is that fine leg?) fumbles in the field to allow them back for two

South Africa reach 136 for 7, which is, I must say, a really good effort on this pitch. The outfield has held up very well, but the pitch is a little iffy - it's two-paced and there's some variable bounce as well. West Indies will need someone to perform the role that Kallis did - one of their top order will have to bat almost through the full 20 overs because it really won't be easy for new batsmen to come in and keep up with a run-a-ball scoring rate. Sahil Dutta's bulletin will be up presently, and from the way he has been feverishly pounding away at his keyboard, sweat pouring from his brow, it looks to be a good one.
