Zimbabwe tour of West Indies, 3rd ODI: West Indies v Zimbabwe at St George's, Feb 26, 2013
West Indies won by 5 wickets (with 22 balls remaining)
26 February 2013 (50-over match)

Adam Khan: "It's just after 2am here in NZ and despite having work at 9am, I'm planning to stay up and watch the match for an hour to support Zimbabwe; the country of my birth. Good luck guys." Good effort, Adam.

imtiaz ali: "I hope that the match is closer.West Indies should not tinker too much with the final 11." Not even to give in-form left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul a go? With the series in the bag, what have they got to lose?

Toss Brendan Taylor has called correctly at the toss, and once again Zimbabwe will bat first in Grenada.

tawaz: "Hope zim will show up some fight like the previous match." It would be nice to watch a close, hard-fought encounter, wouldn't it?

8.35am Hello everyone, and a warm welcome to ESPNcricinfo's coverage of the third and final one-day international between West Indies and Zimbabwe at St. Georges in Grenada. The visiting Zimbabweans put in a far better performance in the second match over the weekend, but they will have to raise their game even further if they are to avoid a series whitewash. West Indies have been utterly dominant, even without the services of some of their bigger names such as Chris Gayle and captain Darren Sammy. Both of those two were rested from the opening matches, and we're yet to hear whether they'll be playing today.

The home side's comfortable position means they may opt to tinker with their line-up and give left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul a go. Zimbabwe, on the other hand, are sweating on the fitness of middle-order batsman Craig Ervine, who put together a confident 80 on Sunday, but then began suffering from a tight chest and general body pains during the second innings. He was due to undergo a fitness test this morning ... While we wait for news from the toss, have a look at Vishal Dikshit's preview.

Tino Best to share the early duties. As Tony Cozier has just pointed out, there are three Tinos playing today: Best, Mawoyo and Mutombodzi.

1.1

Best to Sibanda, no run, Shaping away, left well alone.

1.2

Best to Sibanda, 1 run, First runs of the innings, chopped down to third man.

1.3

Best to Mawoyo, no run, beaten outside off! Or did Mawoyo play inside the line? Well, either way ball has passed bat.

1.4

Best to Mawoyo, no run, Full and on target. Mawoyo presses forward in defense. Both West Indian opening bowlers have been on target so far.

1.5

Best to Mawoyo, 2 runs, and, just as I write that, Best slips one towards Mawoyo's pads and is worked away for a couple.

1.6

Best to Mawoyo, no run, phew! That is quite some delivery to end with. Landing full outside off, it took off and hooped away. Half left by Masakadza, though I'm not sure how he'd have got any bat on that one.

End of over 2 (3 runs) Zimbabwe 3/0 (RR: 1.50)

    • TMK Mawoyo 2 (10b)
    • V Sibanda 1 (2b)

2.1

Roach to Sibanda, no run, Sibanda is rock-solid in defense as Roach hits a perfect line and length.

2.2

Roach to Sibanda, no run, and again. Zimbabwe's openers have been quite reticent, and Roach is yet to concede a run.

2.3

Roach to Sibanda, 2 runs, now Sibanda drives, aiming square on the off side, but the ball comes off the inside edge and rolls through square leg instead.

2.4

Roach to Sibanda, no run, firmly driven, but straight to Kieron Pollard at short extra cover.

2.5

Roach to Sibanda, no run, A little shorter, and rising off a length. Nudged to point.

2.6

Roach to Sibanda, no run, Roach hasn't been at his quickest today, but his final delivery is quick enough to beat Sibanda's pull and strike a stinging blow to his thigh.

3.1

Best to Mawoyo, no run, what's happened here? A brutal delivery from Best, the effort ball, spits off a length and causes Mawoyo all sorts of trouble. He fends wildly, the ball looping off the glove but landing safely in front of the slips.

3.2

Best to Mawoyo, no run, Nudged off the hip to fine leg.

3.3

Best to Mawoyo, no run, Mawoyo gets up on his tip-toes to ride the bounce and punch to cover point. Not much timing in the shot.

3.4

Best to Mawoyo, no run, Best is giving Mawoyo a thorough working-over here! He flings down another thunderbolt which catches Mawoyo at the crease, hitting his chest and ballooning to Ramdin. Mawoyo did well to drop the hands on that one ...

3.5

Best to Mawoyo, 1 run, much fuller this time, Mawoyo getting across to flick to fine leg.

Square leg goes out with Sibanda on strike - he does fancy having a pull at the short stuff.

3.6

Best to Sibanda, 1 run, and short it is, but the pull is a controlled one, Sibanda rolling the wrists on it to pick up a single.

End of over 4 (2 runs) Zimbabwe 7/0 (RR: 1.75)

4.5

Roach to Sibanda, 1 run, Sibanda finds a run on the leg side, picking the gap at midwicket.

Steve the Bajan: "Everton Weekes: one of the greatest! Little known fact: despite being a brilliantly attacking batsman, he hit only one six in a Test match -- and that off a no ball! As he said to me once: "Son, in everything you do in life: Control, control, control!""

6.1

Roach to Sibanda, no run, on a length outside off, still wonderfully accurate stuff from Roach.

6.2

Roach to Sibanda, no run, fuller, straighter, and driven to mid-on.

6.3

Roach to Sibanda, no run, Sibanda taps defensively towards cover, but there's no room for a cheeky single.

6.6

Roach to Sibanda, no run, stolid defense ends another quiet over.

Baynham Goredema: "Vusi shouldnt be copying Tino here. Tinos job is to be there to the end while everyone bats around him. Get a move on Vusi!"

Best to Mawoyo, 1 leg bye, a fierce lifter strikes Mawoyo on the shoulder and flies down to third man.

7.2

Best to Sibanda, no run, Sibanda helicopters into a wild cut, but can't lay bat on ball. He was looking to thrash it over point, but was beaten by pace and bounce.

7.3

Best to Sibanda, 1 run, glanced off the pad for a welcome single. Neither batsman really wants to be on strike to this sort of bowling ...

7.4

Best to Mawoyo, 1 run, ah, the slower one from Best! Mawoyo appears to pick it, tapping to mid-off and setting off for a run.

7.5

Best to Sibanda, no run, Sibanda looks for a tip-and-run single to extra cover, but he's swiftly sent back.

7.6

Best to Sibanda, 2 runs, aggression! Sibanda spots another slower one from Best, this one delivered at around 118kph, and lofts it to the vacant long on region. The ball plugs in the outfield, but they're back for the second.

Roger Sawh: "Whoa, I just realized that Zimbabwe's entire team bats right handed! I'm sure it's been done before, but I doubt it's that regular in today's game. I guess it can only help Permaul, who'll be turning the ball away from the bat."

Ah, it's a double change as Sunil Narine comes into the attack. He picked up a wicket with his first ball in he last game, bowling Chamu Chibhabha ...

9.1

Narine to Mawoyo, OUT, and he's done it again! Mawoyo appeared uncertain as to which way the ball would spin, and thrust his bat and pad out together. The ball pitched, spun in and struck the pad. There's a huge appeal, which Ian Gould denies ... but Narine insists on a review. And this is out! It looked borderline on first viewing, but it's struck him in line and would have taken out leg stump.

TMK Mawoyo lbw b Narine 9 (41m 26b 0x4 0x6) SR: 34.61

9.2

Narine to Masakadza, no run, Masakadza nudges watchfully to fine leg to begin his innings. There is a man at slip, and another at short leg ...

9.3

Narine to Masakadza, no run, this time he's down the wicket, but Narine spots him coming and stops him with a quicker one.

9.4

Narine to Masakadza, no run, punched to extra cover off the back foot.

9.5

Narine to Masakadza, no run, tapped back down the track.

9.6

Narine to Masakadza, no run, obdurate defense ends the over.

Not the most explosive Powerplay from the Zimbabweans. They haven't struck a single boundary, and some accurate West Indian bowling has resulted in three maidens.

End of over 10 (wicket maiden) Zimbabwe 23/1 (RR: 2.30)

    • H Masakadza 0 (5b)
    • V Sibanda 13 (29b)

10.1

DJ Bravo to Sibanda, no run, seaming in off the track, Sibanda defends from the crease.

10.2

DJ Bravo to Sibanda, 1 run, driven straight down the ground, but Roach is at long on and keeps them to a single.

10.3

DJ Bravo to Masakadza, no run, Masakadza's bottom hand comes into play as he flicks to midwicket.

10.4

DJ Bravo to Masakadza, FOUR, finally, a boundary! Masakadza breaks the drought with a slightly uncultured heave into the leg side. It wasn't the prettiest shot, but it had power behind it and it got the desired result.

10.5

DJ Bravo to Masakadza, 1 run, and he follows that with a single to long on, Bravo continuing to keep the ball up to the bat.

10.6

DJ Bravo to Sibanda, no run, Sibanda defends, on the walk, to end the over.

James: "Andrew, i'm surprised. Liam has cursed Zim so far this series! Look at the results!" I assure you I've had nothing to do with these results, James! I am but a lowly commentator ...

End of over 11 (6 runs) Zimbabwe 29/1 (RR: 2.63)

    • V Sibanda 14 (32b)
    • H Masakadza 5 (8b 1x4)

Narine to Masakadza, 1 run, Masakadza leaves his crease to get to the pitch, and forces the ball down the ground for a single.

11.3

Narine to Sibanda, no run, appreciable spin off the track for Narine, and it's enough to beat Sibanda's attempted nudge to leg.

11.4

Narine to Sibanda, no run, floated up much fuller outside off, Sibanda stretches forward to defend to point.

11.5

Narine to Sibanda, no run, Narine giving them nothing to hit, as Sibanda gently pings the leg side field.

12.1

DJ Bravo to Masakadza, no run, pitched right up to Masakadza, who presses forward defensively.

12.2

DJ Bravo to Masakadza, no run, there's a drive from the batsman, but it's stopped by the bowler in his follow through. Bravo is bowling a superb wicket-to-wicket line.

A man has been brought in to a short, straight mid-on, right in Masakadza's eyeline.

12.3

DJ Bravo to Masakadza, OUT, bowled him! Masakadza has been tied down by some accurate bowling, and the frustration showed as he backed away to leg and tried to open up the off side. But Bravo's line was impeccable, and he wobbled the ball past the bat to disturb the stumps. The bowler is ecstatic, and celebrates Gangnam style ...

H Masakadza b DJ Bravo 6 (13m 13b 1x4 0x6) SR: 46.15

12.4

DJ Bravo to Taylor, no run, Taylor leans forward and plays across his front pad, as is his wont. No run.

12.5

DJ Bravo to Taylor, no run, watchful defense from Zimbabwe's captain, playing with a nice straight bat.

12.6

DJ Bravo to Taylor, no run, Bravo sends his final delivery of the over a little wider of off stump, and Taylor shoulders arms.

Timid stuff from the Zimbabweans. They're really allowing the West Indian bowlers to dictate terms.

End of over 13 (wicket maiden) Zimbabwe 30/2 (RR: 2.30)

    • BRM Taylor 0 (3b)
    • V Sibanda 14 (36b)

13.4

Narine to Sibanda, no run, a hint of width is offered outside off, Sibanda cutting straight to backward point.

13.5

Narine to Sibanda, no run, nudged softly to point, Sibanda playing back and across

13.6

Narine to Sibanda, FOUR, a boundary for Sibanda! Narine had kept his length on the short side to deny the drive, but this was too short and Sibanda rocked back to pull firmly to deep midwicket.

End of over 14 (5 runs) Zimbabwe 35/2 (RR: 2.50)

    • V Sibanda 18 (42b 1x4)
    • BRM Taylor 0 (3b)
    • SP Narine 3-1-6-1
    • DJ Bravo 3-1-9-1
14.1

DJ Bravo to Taylor, FOUR, lofted confidently over the leg side field! When Bravo is accurate, he can be very hard to get away, but when he strays he does so at a very hittable pace. A leg stump delivery is dispatched.

14.2

DJ Bravo to Taylor, no run, that's better from West Indies' captain, hitting a length on off stump. Taylor defends.

14.3

DJ Bravo to Taylor, no run, wicket to wicket once again, and the batsman can only defend.

14.4

DJ Bravo to Taylor, 1 run, Taylor is looking to be positive here. He shuffles right across to the off side to fetch a delivery down to fine leg.

14.5

DJ Bravo to Sibanda, 1 run, good, early call from Taylor. Sibanda just tapped the ball softly to point, and he was called through straight away.

15.2

Narine to Sibanda, no run, an off stump half volley is fetched into the leg side, but a diving midwicket fielder saves the run.

15.3

Narine to Sibanda, FOUR, shot! Again Sibanda seizes on one that is too short and too wide, this time thrashing a cut through cover point.

15.4

Narine to Sibanda, 1 run, swept. There are shouts of "catch it!", but the ball rolls into the deep quite safely.

15.5

Narine to Taylor, no run, flicked across the line to midwicket.

15.6

Narine to Taylor, no run, and a diving midwicket fielder is once again in action to deny Zimbabwe a run, Taylor playing with the spin.

Brian: "Time for Sibanda to step up and show the world his true potential.About time, isn't it?"

16.1

DJ Bravo to Sibanda, FOUR, driven powerfully through extra cover! Sibanda is surely stepping up now, getting right to the pitch and driving the ball in the air but through the gap and away to the boundary.

16.2

DJ Bravo to Sibanda, no run, there's an appeal for a catch behind the wicket, the ball rising down the leg side ... but that's brushed the pad and nothing else.

16.3

DJ Bravo to Sibanda, SIX, Sibanda is flowing now! He picks up a length delivery and heaves it high into the leg side. Darren Bravo was out at midwicket, but it was hit well enough to beat the fielder.

16.4

DJ Bravo to Sibanda, no run, outside off this time, and left alone.

16.5

DJ Bravo to Sibanda, 1 run, Best at short fine leg saves three runs, and very nearly effects a run out! Sibanda tipped a full toss in his direction, but he got low to stop the ball and was back up in a flash as Taylor charged through. A better throw would've had him ...

16.6

DJ Bravo to Taylor, no run, Taylor defends to midwicket to end the over.

End of over 17 (11 runs) Zimbabwe 59/2 (RR: 3.47)

Ah, and we're going to have our first look at Veerasammy Permaul now.

17.1

Permaul to Sibanda, 1 run, a little short to start, and Sibanda punches out to the cover sweeper.

17.2

Permaul to Taylor, no run, attempted reverse sweep from Taylor! He doesn't think he needs a sighter ... but the shot doesn't come off, so perhaps he should have.

17.3

Permaul to Taylor, no run, nudged to point in far more orthodox fashion.

17.4

Permaul to Taylor, no run, defended to off once again.

17.5

Permaul to Taylor, 1 run, a chip shot bounces down to long off. A controlled stroke, Taylor checking the shot.

17.6

Permaul to Sibanda, 1 run, turn for Permaul! This one gripped and spun sharply, squaring Sibanda up from round the wicket. But the ball rolls into space at cover, and they take a single.

And that'll take us to drinks at St Georges. West Indies will be untroubled by Zimbabwe's slow start. These two have accelerated somewhat, but this looks a great track for batting and Zimbabwe will have to score much more quickly if they are to set a challenging total.

Gup: "Always felt that an area where Zimbabwe should learn is the rotation of strike.Big hits here and there will get them nowhere without ones and twos"

End of over 18 (3 runs) Zimbabwe 62/2 (RR: 3.44)

    • BRM Taylor 8 (16b 1x4)
    • V Permaul 1-0-3-0

Tino Best will resume after the refreshments interval. He troubled Mawoyo early on with some fearsome fast bowling.

18.1

Best to Sibanda, 2 runs, he's full to start, and Sibanda whips across his pad to find two runs to square leg.

18.2

Best to Sibanda, no run, sharp bouncer! That'll keep the batsman deep in his crease. Sibanda ducks as the ball approaches him, dropping his hands.

Best likes to bounce batsmen, and Sibanda fancies himself on the pull. This could be interesting.

18.3

Best to Sibanda, no run, much fuller this time. Sibanda digs it out back down the track, and Best threatens to throw down the stumps after picking the ball up in his follow through ...

18.4

Best to Sibanda, 1 run, short again, and this time Sibanda rocks back to pull! He gets a good connection on the shot, but there's a man out at deep square to cut it off.

18.5

Best to Taylor, 1 wide, dug in once more, but this one goes down the leg side and is called wide.

18.5

Best to Taylor, no run, Full, pushed back to the bowler.

18.6

Best to Taylor, no run, and yet another full delivery to end the over, Taylor pushing it to backward point.

    • V Sibanda 40 (57b 3x4 1x6)
    • TL Best 5-0-18-0
    • V Permaul 1-0-3-0
19.1

Permaul to Sibanda, 1 run, chopped down to third man, and he's into the 40s.

19.2

Permaul to Taylor, FOUR, this time he's nailed the reverse sweep! Taylor bends low, reverses his hands, and sends the ball skittering past Russell at backward point.

19.3

Permaul to Taylor, 2 runs, slashed down past Russell once more, this time Taylor on the cut, and they're back for the second.

Apparently Sunil Narine is off the field as he's not feeling well. Some sort of stomach complaint?

19.4

Permaul to Taylor, no run, beaten on the cut this time! Permaul loops it down from round the wicket as Taylor steps back, but his shot is beaten by turn and bounce.

19.5

Permaul to Taylor, FOUR, not this time! Taylor skips out to get to the pitch, and scythes a drive through extra cover. This has they makings of a confident partnership, and it's nearing fifty.

Best to Sibanda, OUT, Best strikes! This didn't look like the most lethal delivery, just full and aimed at the top of middle. There was, perhaps, a touch of away shape on it, and Sibanda just closed the face of the bat too early. A leading edged skewed in the air towards mid-off, where Deonarine took a simple catch.

Permaul to Taylor, OUT, skewed to extra cover, and Powell holds a simple catch to get rid of Taylor! He'd been trying to take the attack to the spinners in this innings, and had cruised along at better than a run a ball, but now he's paid the price for one shot too many. He tried to drive over extra cover, but wasn't close to the pitch and lost control of the stroke as the ball spun and bounced away from him.

DJ Bravo to Jarvis, no run, the slower one from Bravo, just 99kph, and Jarvis is too early into his forward defensive push. The ball bounces a little more than he expected, and he's struck on the thigh.

Not a whole lot going right for Zimbabwe out there. There presence of Chibhabha may, perhaps, help them to play out their quota of overs, but they're not going to get anything close to a challenging total.

End of over 42 (3 runs) Zimbabwe 160/8 (RR: 3.80)

    • KM Jarvis 0 (2b)
    • CJ Chibhabha 11 (39b)

43.5

DJ Bravo to Jarvis, no run, a slow offcutter is tapped softly into the off side.

43.6

DJ Bravo to Jarvis, 2 runs, that's more like it! Jarvis lifts yet another slower ball back over the bowler's head. There's precious little timing in the stroke, but it's nicely straight, landing between the outfielders, so they take a second run.

    • KM Jarvis 4 (8b)
    • CJ Chibhabha 19 (45b 1x4)

Tino Best comes back into the attack, hunting lower order wickets. The target, for the Zimbabweans, is to reach 200.

44.1

Best to Chibhabha, 1 run, an uppercut flies in the air down to third man ... where Narine manages to keep it inside the rope, stopping the boundary. But should this count as a dropped catch? He got to it, but was always in risk of tumbling over the boundary. Ultimately, he did well to keep them to just a single.

44.2

Best to Jarvis, no run, Jarvis props half forward to push to cover.

44.3

Best to Jarvis, no run, bouncer! Pretty quick too, but Jarvis' knees buckle in good time and he ducks underneath it.

44.4

Best to Jarvis, 1 wide, another short one! But this is dug in practically at his own feet, and is called wide as it rises high over Jarvis' off stump.

Is he setting him up for the yorker here?

44.4

Best to Jarvis, no run, yes indeed! But it's well dug out by the batsman.

45.1

DJ Bravo to Jarvis, no run, Bravo offers width, and Jarvis' drive is stopped at point.

45.4

DJ Bravo to Jarvis, no run, Jarvis goes for an optimistic heave, but it's another slower one from Bravo and he's through the shot before the ball gets to him. It scoots past the outside edge and bounces through to Ramdin.

45.5

DJ Bravo to Jarvis, 1 run, Jarvis drives with high left elbow, making sure to get bat on ball, and finds something of a gap through mid off.

45.6

End of over 46 (3 runs) Zimbabwe 179/8 (RR: 3.89)

    • CJ Chibhabha 21 (47b 1x4)
    • KM Jarvis 6 (18b)
    • DJ Bravo 8-1-37-2
    • TL Best 7-0-28-1
46.1

Best to Chibhabha, FOUR, a flash, an edge, and a boundary! Best is bowling very quickly now, but this was wide of off stump and Chibhabha had a full go at it. There's no-one in the slips, so the edge flew down to third man for four.

46.2

Best to Chibhabha, no run, beaten on the inside edge! This curved in through the air as it neared Chibhabha, snaking past his forcing stroke and flying over middle stump.

46.3

Best to Chibhabha, no run, and now he beats him with the slower ball! Looped down outside off, Chibhabha thrusts the bat out with no great certainty and the ball dribbles past him.

    • CJ Chibhabha 26 (51b 2x4)
    • TL Best 8-0-33-1
    • DJ Bravo 8-1-37-2
47.1

DJ Bravo to Chibhabha, FOUR, goodness me, that is shockingly lazy fielding from Powell. Chibhabha slammed a full ball down the ground, getting a good connection, but Powell was at long on and should have stopped it. Instead, he ran right over it, trying to kick the ball back but stepping right over it.

47.2

DJ Bravo to Chibhabha, SIX, and that'll rub it in! Chibhabha is growing in confidence now, and he picks a slower one, smoking it over wide long on!

47.6

DJ Bravo to Chibhabha, 1 run, a tip and run single, wide of extra cover, keeps Chibhabha on strike.

48.4

Best to Jarvis, OUT, superb reflex catch! Jarvis cleared his front leg and aimed to smite this down the ground, but toe-ended it in the air straight back to Best. It was still fit fairly hard, and Best clung onto it with minimal fuss.

Dwayne Bravo will bowl the final over, coming round the wicket to Chibhabha.

49.1

DJ Bravo to Chibhabha, 1 run, full, and slammed down the ground ... But he can't find the boundary, and they manage just a single.

49.2

DJ Bravo to Mpofu, no run, Mpofu is an all sorts of trouble to this Bravo slower ball, his bat becoming entangled in his pad as he falls across his front leg. There's a big appeal, and it's upheld by Ian Gould, but Mpofu opts to review it, and why not? Actually, that's a good call, as replays show it was missing leg!

49.3

DJ Bravo to Mpofu, no run, dug out to cover, where there's no single to be had.

49.4

DJ Bravo to Chibhabha, SIX, Chamu ends the innings in style! Bravo helped him with a hip high full toss, outside leg, but he connected really well with the heave to leg to end the innings with a six.

luke: "highlight of the innings for me: "And Mpofu wants the single! A flabbergasted Chibhabha sends him back. " - proper chuckle at that!!" Ha, as did I! Who knows what he was thinking ...

So, Zimbabwe limp to 211 for 9, which is more than they looked like getting half an hour ago but probably not enough to make West Indies sweat. The track looked a decent one for batting. There was a hint of swing early on, and Roach and Best bowled accurate opening spells to tie the Zimbabweans down from the beginning. Sunil Narine once again proved a handful - more for his variations than any demons in the pitch - and Veerasammy Permaul enjoyed a happy outing with three middle-order wickets. If Zimbabwe are going to have any hope, they'll need early wickets and disciplined seam bowling - two things which have evaded them thus far in the series. While I rest my weary fingers, have a look at Abhishek Purohit's report.

End of over 50 (8 runs) Zimbabwe 211/9
