John Hirshe was born in South Africa but was educated in England, attending Shrewsbury and Cambridge. Although he learned football at school he took up rugby at university to such good effect that he played for Eastern Province on his return home and toured Great Britain in 1906 with Paul Roos's Springbok side. His limited exposure to first-class cricket came with WG Grace's London County side. He subsequently became a member of parliament in South Africa.
