Profile

William Mudie was an allrounder who made played as a specialist batsman for Surrey between 1856 and 1859 with no real success. However, midway through the 1859 season he bowled for the first time and took 7 for 61 against a strong North of England side. He bowled little more than year and in 1860, but in 1861 took 26 wickets at 16.38, including 6 for 78 and 6 for 49, remarkably in separate matches against North of England - 22 of his 48 career wickets came against them. In 1861-62 he toured Australia with HH Stephenson's XI, and while he carried on playing for Surrey for a few more seasons, he did not repeat his earlier success.
