Stewart Pether was an excellent all-round sportsman, winning Blues at Oxford for cricket, rugby and golf - he also played hockey for them but did not win a Blue. He played 10 first-class matches for Oxford University in 1939, taking 31 wickets at 20.06. He also played regularly for Oxfordshire in the years before the war.
