Charles Prest was a top-order batsman who appeared once for Middlesex and twice for Yorkshire, but his only first-class fifty came for Southgate against Oxford University. An amateur actor, he appeared on the London stage under the pseudonym Mr Peveril. He died of burns aged 33 when he is believed to have had a fit and fallen into a fire while staying with his brother, the Archdeacon of Durham.
