George Walker started off as a slow left-armer but subsequently developed into a genuinely fast bowler who for more than a decade led the Derbyshire attack. He was prone, according to Wisden, to be erratic and short but got the ball to lift off a length and was a very awkward bowler to play. He played for the county for 17 seasons, captaining them in some, and was a popular leader. He retired to farm on the Duke of Portland's estate, where he died aged only 47.
