Richard Johnson, a batsman/wicketkeeper, left Warwickshire to join Derbyshire at the end of the 2012 season, a summer in which he had made his mark during two spells on loan at the County Ground.
He developed through the Warwickshire system from the age of 11 and played in the team that won the CB40 final in 2010, but found his first-team opportunities limited by the return to form of Tim Ambrose at Edgbaston.
Johnson made 72 in his maiden first-class innings against Cambridge UCCE in 2008, but he never surpassed it during his time at Warwickshire. He was restricted to only 10 more first-class appearances in the whole of his five seasons with the county, although one of these was in the match in which the county clinched the 2012 Championship, with an innings' victory over Worcestershire at New Road. Johnson had been recalled from Derbyshire for a second time because Ambrose was injured.
He signed a three-year contract and vied for a place with Tom Poynton as first-choice keeper. Johnson soon forced his way into the Championship side, playing primarily as a batsman and our-day side midway through the 2013 season and ended the campaign with 556 first-class runs, equalling his career-best score of 72 against Surrey.
Since the retirement of Sri Lanka's big two batsmen there has been a lot of talk about what the new-look line-up needs to do, but the end product has been harder to find
