Bruce Deem early cricket was in Bundaberg where he played in Wide Bay primary school and junior teams. His club cricket in Bundaberg was for Past Highs and for Combined Country. In 1980 he moved to Brisbane to play with Eastern Suburbs, playing first grade from 1980-81 to 1983-84, and also appeared for Northern Suburbs. For a short time he played with Frenchville in Rockhampton. He represented each of Queensland Country Colts and Queensland Colts in 1979-80. He commenced umpiring in 2000 and in 2002-03 stood in the two matches between South Queensland and Victoria Institute of Sport and in three matches of the National Country Championships played in Bundaberg in January 2003. He was registrar of the Bundaberg Cricket Association for nine years from 1990-91 and president of the Association from 1999 to 2001. He is the chairman of the National Country Cricket Championships, Bundaberg committee for the season of 2002-03. He was educated at South Bundaberg State School and at Kepnock State High School. He is now the manager of the Medical Benefits Fund in Bundaberg. (Warwick Torrens, Jan 2003)
