Chris Gayle wins big at WIPA awards

Chris Gayle has been named international cricketer and Test player of the year at the West Indies Players Association (WIPA) awards. Allrounder Stafanie Taylor picked up the international women's player of the year award.

Gayle's recognition was chiefly inspired by his triple-hundred against Sri Lanka in November 2010, in Galle. The innings of 333 was Gayle's top Test score and the second time he went past 300 in Tests, making him only the fourth batsman ever to do so. He is at present out of the West Indies side, following a stand-off with the board over his exclusion for the Pakistan series, and his participation in the IPL.

Taylor was in rich form in 2010, scoring heavily in the ICC Women's Challenge in South Africa where she averaged 97.00. She is currently ranked No. 2 in the ICC women's ODI batting and allrounder ratings.

Kieron Pollard and Darren Sammy were named the best ODI and Twenty20 players, while Keiron Joseph was named Under-19 player of the year. Jamaica, who won the Regional Four Day Competition for the 2010-'11 season, were adjudged the first-class team of the year.

@Shawnsundar ! I repeat ,Pollard got the ODI player award, and Sammy the T20 award.I wonder how many of the panel selected Pollard ? Pollard averages <10 against quality bowling. His present av.is only boosted by fifties against bowling not up to Int'l standards, namely Ireland and the Netherlands.

@Metman: Let me clarify, Sammy got the ODI award while Polly got the T20. My bad.

Caribbean cricket is in distress.Friction all around, board executives unable to resolve ongoing issues, players dissatisfied, the people bitter and a dark cloud hovers ahead. We have already lost all matches to India and the worst seems enevitable.Top of the world batsman Gayle, sits and watches as his colleages are mauraded by those who feared him most.Sammy is trying his best even though he is far from a Clive Lloyd or a Steve Waugh. What about Sarwan? The fella is taking his time and adding to his record.Making a 50 in sweet time does not help WI cause. He needs to be dropped immediately. He will not help in the one day matches, neither will he be of use in the test matches. It is incomprehensible to see Sarwan in the team and a superior player,Shivnarine Chanderpaul looking on.Selectors you need to act in the best interest of WI cricket

Keiron Pollard and Darren Sammy were named the best ODI and T20 players - Given the level of WI Cricket in the last decade, this means as much as a three sided square. These awards should have been given to players who actually made a difference to help their team to win.

@Shawnsundar !What are yu trying to say ?I don't understand! What article was in the Trinidad express as yu said 'since two days ago' ?so what?It seems that the only person who does't understand what they read is yu !Pollard DID NOT get the T20 award,he got the ODI award.Sammy got the T20 award.Quoting from what was on cricket info under the caption 'Chris Gayle wins big at WIPA awards 'keiron Pollard and Darren Sammy were named the best ODI and T20 players ".The word respectively should have been added at the end though. How can WIPA conduct an Awards Ceremony ?I thought it was the Board !Now I can clearly see why Pollard was selected. He should now do the right thing by giving back his award, and let the public or the Board decide who should have it.

I do not particularly give a damn about the fact that Gayle and Pollard were given awards by the WIPA. What angers me is that Gayle Pollard and Dwayne Bravo are still involved in the WIndies set up when they are more committed to the IPL. The selectors should drop them completely and attempt to move on to younger and more committed players who want to play for the WIndies. Of course, we all know that the selectors do not have the courage to do this, so we have to keep tolerating these total and utter failures for sometime yet

Normally, such events are conducted by the home cricket boards..sadly, nothing is normal with the WI cricket these days..so the players' association itself conducts the awards ceremony!
