Gayle left out of training squad to face Australia

Chris Gayle's prospects of representing West Indies again look grimmer than ever after he was left out of the WICB's 30-man squad for a fitness and training camp ahead of the home series against Australia.

While the squad featured a host of other players not contracted directly to the WICB - Tino Best, Dwayne Bravo, Kieron Pollard and Denesh Ramdin among them - 32-year-old Gayle was conspicuous by his absence, following earlier calls by the board's chief-executive Ernest Hilaire for the former captain to make his priorities clear.

Gayle has not played for West Indies since last year's World Cup, in large part due to comments he made against the board and the coach Ottis Gibson during a radio interview.

The WICB asked Gayle to retract his comments and the batsman has refused to do so.

"The Board requires you to provide a general public retraction of the comments made in the interview in question and the effect it has had on the team, coach, captain and management, and to express a commitment to team and management," Hilarie told Gayle in an email in January.

"If the terms of that retraction can be agreed, WICB will be happy to consider you eligible once again for selection."

In the meantime, Gayle has taken part in various Twenty20 competitions around the world, including the IPL, the Big Bash League in Australia and the BPL in Bangladesh.

He is currently in South Africa as part of the Dolphins' T20 squad in Durban, but is yet to make his debut due to a groin injury.

The other notable absentee from the training squad was Ravi Rampaul, who could not be considered for the camp due to illness.

Rampaul had earlier this month been ruled out of regional matches for Trinidad and Tobago due to a shoulder problem.

Look, to all those who criticize Chris Gayle and call him childish, or talk about his attitude problems..

He has played for many other teams and does not have issues with others...

the people with the childish attitudes are in fact the WICB board and the Coach... the Coach has also had a fallout with the quite and soft spoken Chanderpaul, and Sarawan ...It is documented that Ottis Gibson thinks himself a better batsman than Chanderpau, Sarawan and Gayle ...

And the coach has been asked to apologise to no one. the problem started with the new coach,,, not with Chris Gayle's Test debut 10 years ago .

And If you FOLLOWED the issue.. it started with the Coach, and Hillare taking pot shots at Gayle and the other batsmen in the media and blaming them for the failure of the WI team in the world CUP ..(never mind the selectors picked a horrible team, with no bowling and a horrible keeper)

Since the West Indies is pre disposed to not include Gayle then the playing eleven for the Australia test series should be:

Barath, Kraigg Brathwaite, Kirk Edwards, Darren Bravo, Chanderpaul, Brendon Nash, Ramdin (WK & Captain), Russell, Fidel Edwards, Roach and Bishoo.

No place for Sammy - does not deserve to there. No place forSsamuels in the starting 11 but keep him around. Would have like to see Jerome Taylor in place of either Fidel Edwards or Roach.

I don't think we people understand what discipline means when it comes to sports. Not because someone is a good player that he will automatically make a team; discipline comes first. I believe that someone should have a chat with Gayle about his discipline.

  • NCassie on March 4, 2012, 18:28 GMT

Unfortunate that Rampaul is injured, Ramdin should be the # 1 wicketkeeper seeing that he has good batting form now. I think Narine has the edge over Bishoo for the limited overs, but they should consider him to give Bishoo competition for the test spot....No Rampaul so I say play the both spinners. Sammy is not attacking bowler in test....Play Roach, Fidel, Bishoo, Narine & Dwayne as the frontline bowlers. Come on Selectors please play the best players available and those who are doing well at the regional level.

I find it rather STRANGE that every time the West Indies get a good 4 prong pace attack together , then just before the game begin one of them is ruled due to some unusual reason . Ravi Rampaul always get the top half of the opposition out , so he will be very much missed .

Why are we trying to force a man to say sorry for something he obviously is not sorry for? what is retracting his statements gonna do? And why should a person retract a statement if the statement made was true. If they were untrue I assume they would have sued Gayle for defamation by now. Even a murderer is not forced by the courts to apologize to the victim's family. SO this nonsense about apologizing for the truth to be admitted into the team is NONSENSE. Just punish the man for whatever indiscretions he was deemed to have made and lets move on. That punishment surely could not be a ban from international cricket for a year. I do not think anyone is saying Gayle should not be punished but how can anyone back the WICB on such arbitrary decisions that clearly breaches the rule of natural justice!!!! Their decisions are personal, not professional. Imagine if all judges sentenced a person based on personal emotions. Justice delayed is indeed justice denied.

With Gayle not in, I guess it is up to Barath and Kraigg to give them a decent start. From then I think Daren would have to make the innings stable and come up with good partnerships with the rest of the middle order. Sammy should take responsibility as the pinchhitter of the team. My West Indies X1:Barath, Braithwaitte, Daren Bravo, Shiv, Dwayne, Ramdin, Sammy, Russel,Roach, Fidel and Bishoo/Narine.

I don't expect WICB selectors doing something really exciting with the team selection. It would be full of same old faltering players. I wish at least Kirk Edwards makes it to playing 11 this time in ODIs too. I am also keen to see how Darren Bravo, Andre Russel and Sunil Narine perform against Australia. Notable absentees for me in this 30 man squad include ofcourse Gayle first, Kevin McLean (CCC), Delorn Johnson (Winward), Odeon Brown (Jamaica), Ryan Austin (CCC), Jason Holder (CCC) and Deonaraine (Guyana). Specially Delorn and Jason are 2 really exciting prospects from Sagicor high performance squad Windies selectors should have focused on.

  • todobless on March 3, 2012, 15:11 GMT

Nash scores runs even slower than Chanders, dats why he is not in the ODI/T20 squad. Simmonds is WI best ODI/T-20 batsman (mos runs) but is injured. My 11 would be Bharrat, Chanders, Daren, Samuels, Ramdin Pollard, Dwayne, Russel, Sammy, Narine, Edwards/Bishoo/Roac?. Kirk edwards bats as slow as Nash, so e might be able to replace an all-rounder (prbly russel/pollard). Sammy will always play but i would replace him with kirk or another bowler if i could have. He is the WEAK-LINK. Gayle??....He would have given them an answer for D. Warner.

  • on March 3, 2012, 7:46 GMT

No one in the WI who is reasonable ever expected CG's name to appear on the training squad list. Nothing has changed so why would his name appear? That would have meant a complete 360 degrees shift in position from the board. Does he want to play for the WI's or wants his unconditional NOC's.Last time I checked I haven't heard a response. He is in SA though on the injured list. I don't think that there is anything I can say that hasn't been said already but for some history concerning CG I would suggest that people read the "bouncer for Gayle" article by Wattley rather that write on raw emotion. The whole sequence of events is in the public domain. People who don't see the facts are just being selectively blind

  • on March 3, 2012, 4:03 GMT

And Why Shiv Chanderpaul out of ODI team.

    That coach is an IDIOT!

  • on March 3, 2012, 3:33 GMT

Gayle my eyeball. We had him, Sarwan, Taylor, Bravo, Ramdin et al in the team that lost a boatload of matches during the last decade. I'm not a big fan of the Board, but when you play brainless cricket, how can one honestly blame administrators? Gayle is happy and making tons of money hammering club bowlers. Who says he wishes to cease? Let's go with the youngsters for the future. They can pick Chanderpaul's and Dessie Haynes' brains for batting knowledge, but must still execute well at the wicket if they wish to be successful. We're liable to get more passion, enthusiasm, committment from the young brigade as they wish to make a name for themselves. Add pride to that mix and you have players who will give it their all. All we need is a captain who is able to earn his place in the team. I suggest Kirk Edwards, the current deputy. Sammy should be relegated to the shorter versions of the game for which his syle/skill set are ideally suited. Where are you Metman?

  • on March 3, 2012, 0:52 GMT

I am wondering why Gayle does not just call the WICB's bluff and publicly retract his statements and put the ball straight back into their court to see their next move. I believe they will have no choice but to select him. Or is it possible that Gayle is just not interested in playing for us any more. Picture this. I work for a company that pays me thousands per month and I am suspended from my job for comments I made about the company. In the meantime i get a temporary job with another company that pays me millions per month. However I inform everyone that I really want back my old job that pays thousands per month but I am not going to retract my statements. In the meantime I continue to work in my temporary job that pays millions per month. Hmmmmm. Something is fishy here.

  • simon_w on March 2, 2012, 23:39 GMT

Gayle's burnt his bridges. As things stand he doesn't deserve to play for the great and legendary West Indies. If he doesn't want to play for his country, then that's fine by me. Hope you enjoy your time in the BPL and Zimbabwe, Chris.

  • on March 2, 2012, 23:32 GMT

I strongly think that the west Indies cricket board believed that the players are represent them in the cricket world that's why we are seeing the trouble regarding cricket in the region, but these power hungry dictators on the board don't realize that cricket is been played for the people whom are suffering because of these bunch of looses. Look whatever gayle said about the cricket board members that's between the board and Gayle and not the West indies people. I know that the guys on the board is the governing body for cricket in the West Indies but they are taking it too far. If Gayle have said something about the board and these guys behaving like children, then there is some truth to what Gayle said. Look Gayle is the more feared batsman in the world and tell me why he isn't playing for his country; representing the west indies people. If the board thinks that Gayle was over board they should discipline or suspend him this was not done.

Isn't he selfish too WICB or clearly wanna can see it is just a GAYLE thing

Both the WICB and Chris Gayle are at fault. They should both bend over backwards and accommodate each other. I do hope that good sense would prevail in the end because West Indies cricket is bigger than both parties. The Jamaica Cricket Board will be trying to facilitate a resolution between Gayle and the WICB through a mediator. Let us hope and pray that it works. Fingers crossed!

  • WhenDWestwas1 on March 2, 2012, 19:42 GMT

The issue is not if gayle wants to represent the West Indies but if the WICB wants gayle to represent the WICB. Before the India and Pakistan home series in 2011 gayle said he will not be able to play in the IPL because of WI commitments. And the WICB did not select him to play in the series. Therefore he was available to play in the IPL. The conflict in the WI team is that gayle fights for the players but darren sammy supports the board. The difference is one player is highly respected among his peers while the other is seen as a yes man. The interesting detail on this matter is that when gayle shared his views about the coach and the WICB his contract was up he was not a contract player.

  • cricPassion2009 on March 2, 2012, 19:28 GMT

@ScottRobins, your comment is part of the problem ! you are not seeing that Gayle is internationally respected force in cricket and he could do a world of wonders to the WI. The board is channeling negative energy and commotion. They are not understanding the psyche of a talent as big as Gayle. In any case, isn't 1 year of wilderness enough punishment ? Otis Gibson ? Sammy ? what are they in cricket ? You want Gayle to grovel in front of these folks ?

  • on March 2, 2012, 17:15 GMT

If west Indies have any chance against Australia they need to come to their senses where Gayle is concern. Gayle is about the more feared batsman in the world and the west Indies board behaving like a bunch of little kids. Why not if the west Indies board feels that gayle did something wrong then discipline or suspend him but any of that wasn't done. Cricket in the West Indies belongs to the Caribean people not a bunch of looses we have on the board right now. They are killing the cricket and they got to go.

  • jupiterlaw on March 2, 2012, 16:13 GMT

Even if Gayle were to comply with the request to retract the statements that are at issue and he is reinstated in the WI team, it would be difficult to imagine the restoration of a sincere and cordial relationship between himself and the Coach, Otis Gibson. Therefore, it may be in the team's best interest to move forward without him because his presence may prove too much of a distraction.

Is this really any surprise ? both parties r to blame in a situation where only W.I cricket is suffering. For the sake of the future it's time to move on. CG has signed domestic T20 contracts in 5 different countries and therefore made it clear he won't be returning to the Win team. The big problem for Windian cricket is the domestic T20's in particular the IPL. Of the training squad I think 6 have contracts for the upcoming season which clashes with Win international comitments Unfortunatley the IPL is here to stay and WICB need to be careful about when future series r scheduled. If AR is picked for the tests and told he can't play IPL will he turn his back on the team? is Dwayne Bravo serious about playing tests again why is his brother and MS got IPL contracts when in theory they will be needed in all 3 formats against Aus/Eng thus ruling them out of the entire season. The problem would have been even worse had IPL franchises not hav snubbed so many W.I players in the auction.

Gayle is actually in the best place he could be as far as WI cricket is concerned. Out of the squad! Gayle is all about Gayle. He really cares little for the team, WICB or the region's fortunes on the field. This has been evident by his manner and attitude for years. Stay strong WICB, no doubt WIPA will start making a fuss again as it always does just before a series to ensure that their "big man" stays in the spotlight and the WI do not succeed. I am sure the team selected will do their best, the fast bowlers are clicking well, some of the batsmen are finding their feet at this level and the prospects for improvement are good. The Aussies are good but no longer the dominant squad they were a few years ago.

People in the press need when they see Mr. Hilare to ask him why it is that he told Barbados to rest Fidel Edwards for the Barbados vs CCC game in its regional competition due to the upcoming Digicel series, yet gave him permission the following week to go play for the Dolphins in South Africa's T20 Challenge. They favour Edwards to do as he like and no one says nothing

Overall, the whole situation is a sad state of affairs. Like many on here i don't like the way the Board have got about doing their business, but at the same time i laugh at some of the comments that the West Indies will struggle without Gayle. I'm a big fan of his batting talent, but not his attitude. I get the impression that judging by his own comments, he doesn't have much respect for the Board, Coach or Captain and that's fine, he's entitled to his opinion. But don't expect the Board to go on their hands and knees, to beg him back into the Squad, that just doesn't happen in the real world. The way i see it, Gayle has burnt his bridges and it's time for everybody involved to move on. And all this delusion about the team dooming to failure against Australia and England, well here's a fact for all of you. We haven't beaten Australia in a test series since the early 90s and haven't beaten England in a test series in England since 1988..so our decline was here long before now!!

Come on Sammy has to step up to the plate and make so runs :Don't get me worry i am a big fan of Sammy but i am a even bigger one of Gayle ... • on March 2, 2012, 11:28 GMT

GAYLE DO NOT WANT TO PLAY FOR WINDIES AGAIN ALL HE WANT TO DO IS MAKE QUICK MONEY SO PICK THOSE WHO WANT TO PLAY WHETHER WE WIN OR LOSE WITH THEM...LOOK NARINE A YOUNG PROSPECT EVEN CONSIDERING TO NEVER PLAY FOR WINDIES... IS AH MONEY THING AND IPL KILLING TEST CRICKET... BUT LOOK AT AUSTRALIA AND SOUTH AFRICA AND NEWZEALAND THEY ALL ABOVE US AND NONE THEIR PLAYERS IN THAT LEAGUE ONLY IN THEIR OFF SEASON THEY TAKE PART OR IF THEY RETIRED FROM THE NATIONAL TEAM... SO GO SAMMMYYYY AND THE YOUNG PLAYERS WHO WANT TO PLAY STILL FOR THEIR NATION!!!!!!!! !

  • on March 2, 2012, 11:10 GMT

Come on Currently Rampaul is West Indies best bowler True but you no if Samuel Badree get picked he will be the best bowler in the team even if he is a spiner. If WI are even to challenge Australia in tests, Andre Russell will have to be these to make so lower order runes and Rampaul must play.. we will all see if Gayle makes at westindies .. later mates

  • Noball_Specialist on March 2, 2012, 10:21 GMT

West Indies are not worth the bother without Chris Gayle(force).

  • on March 2, 2012, 8:44 GMT

Without Gayle WI can never be a gud team..They have sum quality hard htiters to be top in ODI and 20-20 and they def. need Gayle for it..they cant overlook him..too shame..shame for World Cricket too..cuz we people wud luv to watch Gayle play..ICC shud interfere into this matter..and also, Gayle, u shud be serious abt playing for ur country too rather than playing 20-20 everywhere in da world...

  • SamRoy on March 2, 2012, 8:20 GMT

Currently Rampaul is West Indies best bowler. If WI are even to challenge Australia in tests, Andre Russell and Rampaul must play.

All these cricket control boards around the world need to start acting responsible and start selecting the teams based upon talent... All cricket lovers all over the world deserves to watch the best players from all these cricket playing countries to be in their final 11. Differences needs to be sorted out before it starts clashing with ego. Being the members of selection commity, one has an obligation to the country and to the game of cricket. Without getting in to the details, as a cricket lover, I feel Gayle should be playing. If Chris as a person disrupting the dressing room. than he should have been kept out of ICC recognized tournaments. He seem to be doing just fine in IPL. why can WI board and Gayle not able to sort out the differences? Both of them have an obligation to the game of cricket. No players or selectors should be above the game of Cricket. ICC should intervin and get this issue resolved. At least that is how I feel...!

  • on March 2, 2012, 7:45 GMT

EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW THAT THERE IS SOME RULES AND REGULATIONS TO BE FOLLOWED.GAYLE IS JUST A PLAYER,NOT A SUPERHUMAN.I APRECIATE THE BOLD WICB

  • Duke-Count on March 2, 2012, 7:35 GMT

@all those Gayle sympathisers, don't blame the WICB blindly. Pls get ur facts right. The simple truth is no player (be it Don Bradman or Sachin Tendulkar) is above the game of CRICKET. But Gayle thinks otherwise, feels that he can do whatever he wants & so has been RIGHTLY PUNISHED for his attitude. Very much like what Sehwag did, for which he too has got what he deserved. Whatever happens within the four walls of the dressing-room should stay there only. It was wrong of both Gayle & Sehwag to wash their dirty linen in public. While Sehwag seems to b atoning for his sins (or atleast showing signs of it), Gayle doesn't seem to feel the slightest of remorse. A player might b immensely talented, but without the right attitude, he is not fit to play even for clubs. Do not get me wrong ppl, being an Indian, I've hugely enjoyed Gayle's exploits in IPL, BPL and Big Bash leagues, but certainly don't endorse his public outburst againt WICB & team mgmt. Hope he learns his lesson 4 his own good.

  • on March 2, 2012, 7:31 GMT

It is the ego that has prevailed for over a year now...WI cricket needs his services as a batsman. I hope Cricket wins one day :)

  • Bruisers on March 2, 2012, 7:26 GMT

@Randy_Wilson - He can't win matches single-handedly!?? OMG what can be a bigger joke..! He is can be so very effective with his big hitting in ODIs especially during the power-plays.. If he scores a quick 30-ball 50 and gets out, its almost like WI get 50 bonus runs because any other opener from WI wouldn't score more than 10 runs in the same number of deliveries.. Then the middle order batsmen can bat slowly and set a big total.. And if he does score a century there's no way WI can lose..

  • Al11 on March 2, 2012, 7:20 GMT

No Gayle....no Nash (who had a great 4 day competition)...The only experience player will be Chanderpaul ....the Aussie pace attach (Lee and Pattinson) will completely destroy this WI batting.....for all the people defending the idea of building a young team without experience players....how long will this process takes?...and after the this they will be destroyed by England next...a bunch of my friends, including myself, wanted to fly from the NY to watch a few games....not again with this young WI lineup...waste of time and money....

  • soumyas on March 2, 2012, 7:07 GMT

who is loosing ? WIC or gayle ? i thinking both... i request WICB to forget everything and start fresh, it wud be WIN WIN situation, rather than fighting with gayle...i am an indian fan, but LOVE gayle and like to see him in WIC team.

  • Sports4Youth on March 2, 2012, 5:59 GMT

In a similer standoff between Afridi Vs PCB+Waqar+Ilyas (selector) . Afridi was levied a hefty fine , but what followed was Waqar retired, then Ejaz Butt was refused extension and Now Mohd.Ilyas resigned. While Afridi is already playing since the last 3/4 months. Dont you something similer could have been expected in WI , specially because Criss Gayle is such a high impact player just like Afridi. Earlier in the last 10 yrs when ever Shoeb Akhtar would get in a spat with the board, the boar would resign.

  • on March 2, 2012, 5:55 GMT

When in hell will we get to see Gayle play for windies again?????

  • Srini88 on March 2, 2012, 5:44 GMT

Gayle is one of the best chance to Win against the Aussies. Clash of EGOS and the fans loose out. But WI board is not far different from BCCI.

  • on March 2, 2012, 5:26 GMT

West Indies is badly missing the real & Best cricketer of the new current generation... No one is cared about the west indies cricket board ... Gayle.. We (Royal Challengers) are there for you always.. you better come and join Indian Team..instead of crappy West Indies team... You are such an amazing player...west indies should have realized by this time....

  • Reggaecricket on March 2, 2012, 5:09 GMT

This present WICB is plunging West Indies Cricket further into the doldrums. Look at the issue with Guyana now and also their continued ego games with Chris Gayle. West Indies Cricket needs Chris Gayle. The WICB is NOT larger than the game, Gayle makes his money playing franchise, but is still willing to play for his country. he WICB is holding the Cricket loving public at ransom.

  • neerajprasher on March 2, 2012, 5:03 GMT

i think Non-contracted players are stronger than contracted players.they can beat Australia for sure.

  • Mpeynado41 on March 2, 2012, 4:58 GMT

Why is Brendan Nash not in the training squad? This is unbelievable and unacceptable. Please tell us why. Whoever are responsible for this miscarriage of justice needs to step up and better have a good answer. THIS KIND OF STUFF IS KILLING WEST INDIAN CRICKET AND LOOSING FANS EVERYWHERE.

  • aclarity on March 2, 2012, 4:56 GMT

Once again the selectors have missed a beat. How could you pick 30 persons and leave out the left arm Cotterrell from Jamaica. This guy and D. Johnson from St. Vincent are the most promising fast bowlers I have seen in the Caribbean in 2012. They bring the ball up to the bat and swing it. Again I take the opportunity to remind the selectors that Fidel Edwards should not play consecutive tests. He does not have the stamina and strength to do so.

  • on March 2, 2012, 4:55 GMT

this is too much ego shown by the west indies selectors, they shud know that they r going to face a top class side in aussies, they have annonced a very good side, i still wish that better sense prevails another notable exclusion is simmons and young holders, anyway one loss is others gain, we in india love to see gayle play full ipl... his pockets r full man so why shud he apologise

  • on March 2, 2012, 4:55 GMT

Jamaica needs to separate itself from WICB and be an independent cricketing team. I think Gayle and other Jamaicans are being treated unfairly. Jamaica has won 5 consecutive 4day regional titles and has only a few players on its squad on average for some time now. BIAS...

  • vj3478 on March 2, 2012, 3:57 GMT

I plead guilty - 1 match ban and case closed: I do not plead guilty but still found guilty - 1 series ban + some fine. can WICB explain the ban extending almost for one year?

  • on March 2, 2012, 3:30 GMT

WI have dropped the best batsman in recent years for some swallowed pride that most of the world does not know or care about? hmmm such a shame

  • Randy_Wilson on March 2, 2012, 1:35 GMT

Gayle is just one man, and today its a Shame people only looking at one man in the West indies Team, Gayle is No Lara, who can single handle win game for the West Indies, Gayle is just to over rated. It time to move on West Indies Cricket Fans, Only thing that is stopping this line is is Captaincy. Give Ramdin Captaincy and remove Sammy from the Line up. We can have a proper YOUNG 11 to face off with Australia, My 11 for de Test would be IF I had to choose amoust the 30. A Barath with Brathwaite/Powell , Darren Bravo, K Edwards, S Chanderpaul, Dywane Bravo/ K Pollard, D Ramdin (c/w), D Bishoo/S Narine, F Edwards, K Roach/A Russel, R Rampal. would be a Great young team mix with old members. It time we move over from Gayle, Because want to play T20 Competation around de world and Hates Test Cricket. he said this When we was West Indies Captain.

  • on March 2, 2012, 1:29 GMT

No Brendan Nash. Has a good test record and just worked his way back to 205 n.o. What if some of the IPL batsmen decide to go to India instead? Surely, Nash can find a place in a 30-man squad.

  • on March 2, 2012, 1:08 GMT
