Gayle, WICB reach agreement on return

72

Chris Gayle and the WICB have reached an understanding that paves the way for the former West Indies captain to return to the national team as early as the upcoming tour of England, Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) has reported. However, the deal's success will be tested by an ongoing lawsuit - to which Gayle is a party - between the West Indies Players' Association (WIPA) and the board. Gayle hasn't played for West Indies since the 2011 World Cup.

The agreement between Gayle and the WICB was brokered by CARICOM (the Caribbean Community) and had the involvement of St Vincent Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves. According to the report, a meeting will be convened between the two parties to "tidy up residual matters" after both parties expressed regret for their actions. "In the light of all of this, the WICB and Mr Gayle agree that the way is now clear for his active return to West Indies cricket, subject to all necessary fitness considerations," the report quoted from the agreement. "A date is to be set for this meeting, convenient to all parties, including Mr Gayle who is currently in India," Baldwin Spencer, the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, and the chairman of the Prime Ministerial sub-committee of cricket was quoted as saying.

Gayle has reportedly said he will be unavailable for West Indies duty for the entire duration of the IPL, which ends on May 27. West Indies are due to tour England for a full series between May 5 and June 24 and Gayle's participation in the IPL means he will miss the Test series. However, he was prepared to forego his contract with Somerset and play for West Indies in the one-day and Twenty20 games on that tour. He also said he was available for the World Twenty20 this year and that he was not seeking to "cherry pick" the series he played.

In a statement dated March 29, the board said it was "disappointed" over Gayle's unavailability during the IPL but in the "spirit of compromise and subject to agreement being reached on all outstanding residual matters" it would convey Gayle's unavailability to the selectors.

The board hoped Gayle would drop the lawsuit concerning No-Objection Certificates filed by the WIPA against it, though Gayle, in a statement last week, said he could not "possibly contemplate withdrawing unilaterally from proceedings", especially when such a move would affect all West Indies players. The board, though, has since written to Prime Minister Gonsalves, arguing that Gayle's participation in the lawsuit was not consistent with the agreement reached with the board.

It also questioned why Gayle could not withdraw from the lawsuit unilaterally. "As the lawsuit was started by WIPA without him, and his claims are set out separately, we do not understand why Mr Gayle says he cannot contemplate withdrawing from the lawsuit without WIPA.

"Our efforts must surely be focussed on bringing about the resolution of all outstanding matters between the Board and Mr Gayle."

This exact scenario could have happened months ago if both parties dropped their egotistic stance and think of the Caribbean people. At this time, WI could have won the ODI, T20 series against the Aussies had Gayle been in the side. Better late than never!

With his close mates Bravo and Marlon back into team, he will have a peaceful atmosphere too.. Gayle, Dwayne Smith, Samuels, Bravo, Pollard, Russel, Sammy, Baugh/Any keeper, Narine, Rampaul, Roach.. A dream lineup to have especially in shorter formats.. Everyone can bowl and they have some of the brutal hitters available.. Wowww.. I would surely bank on WI winning the T20 WC..

Supposed to be great news for us West Indian fans but we will wait and see. The current WI team is showing more purpose and we know what Gayle is capable of, batting wise. The challenge will be he needs to fall in line with the obvious discipline instilled in the team. If not, then take your exit and fast.I wish him well and that groin injury is worrying. Was he certified fit before the start of the IPL games ?

This is indeed great news and welcome back Mr Chris Gayle and proove to the world and the jokers that run West Indies vricket that youre the best player in the west west indies.I know it will not be comfortable playing with Gibson and company the dictators but god will see you through .West Indies cricket and the world need you around and we are paying to see good cricket and a ground filled to capacity but with the way this present administration is running our affairs its a shame and poor management. We have a second class coach who feels like he own West Indies cricket and do whatever he want to do but nobody is taking action of getting him fired for a poor job he is doing. Also sammy is a good leader but doesnt merit selection and is keeping a young player down. Please Sammy step down and give someone else a chance . Well it will soon be back to same old, same old. Gayle at slip looking as disinterested as he always has. No one knows what goes on in the dressing room but the fact that Gibson and Sammy have brought the team this far without the efforts of Gayle says a lot. He is a could have been, good striker of the ball but totally unable or unwilling to be a team person. The dream will not last for long.

Excellent! Good to hear this news. Finally WICB "re-recognized" the talent!! I wish he would have been included in T-20 squad against Australia. However its better late than never, I would be glad to see him back in action! All the best to Chris Gayle and I only hope at least this time he remains in the team for a significant amount of time.

Fantastic news! The WI can have a much stronger batting unit now with Gayle opening with Brathwaite (the ultimate foil to his aggression). Shivnarine Chanderpaul will be the mainstay of the middle order, which will also include Darren Bravo and Kirk Edwards. I'm still not too happy with Carlton Baugh as a wicketkeeper due to his lacking of batting skills (I'd prefer Ramdin), but he's ok for now. The bowling attack looks great with the four fast bowlers, Fidel Edwards, Rampaul, Roach and Sammy and young legspinner Bishoo.

  • BamBam13 on April 7, 2012, 0:13 GMT

How is this good for WI cricket. Is this all we care about as a region, T20 and ODIs? I always thought the measure of a cricket side is how well it does in Test matches? This ongoing Gayle saga has to stop. It's either he is all in or not. Don't get me wrong here, the WICB shares the blame here as well. It's incompetence in selecting sides and handling player matters has been atrocious but in my opinion the player has to decide who he plays cricket for, himself or his country/region. If he is in for himself, more power to him, but that would put an end to him playing for WI. Beat the Aussies!

  • delboy on April 6, 2012, 23:36 GMT

A fit Lendl Simmons can let Baugh and Ramdin sweat. Simmons could bat 5 or 6 and keep wicket. He can be the new Jeff Dujon if he wants it.

  • riprock on April 6, 2012, 21:32 GMT

Look at the talent available in the Caribbean. It's my dream to see this squad play together. What a competitive test team this would be :- Chris Gayle, Adrian Barath, Kirk Edwards, Darren Bravo, Marlon Samuels, Shiv Chanderpaul, Dwayne Bravo, Carlton Baugh, Sammy, Ravi Rampaul, Kemar Roach, Fidel Edwards, Jerome Taylor, Devendra Bishoo, Sunil Narine.

  • on April 6, 2012, 20:19 GMT

I am really happy the Gayle is back, not saying that there will be a 360 degrees turn around, but, he surely will be valuable in the top order. As it is evident that we have difficult finding a consistent opening pair. To all the "haters" who think Gayle should choose WI over those other leagues consider this; life continues after cricket and it makes no sense having a lot of fame and being broke. As a "Great Reggae Icon" said, every man has a right to decide his own destiny! It is his talent so let hem use it wisely.

  • on April 6, 2012, 18:28 GMT

Darren Sammy should captain in t20s, chanderpaul should captain in tests and pollard/bravo should captain in ODIs.

  • Cpt.Meanster on April 6, 2012, 17:40 GMT

Although I think Gayle is a tremendous boost to the WI team, I don't think he will change any fortunes for them. The team as a whole is struggling without consistency. The number of match winners are less except 1 or 2 players. Right now Dwayne Bravo and Pollard are big names. Andre Russell has potential. Gayle will bring some old school aggression up front but the team has miles to go before becoming a complete force like the old days.

  • on April 6, 2012, 16:09 GMT

This is really confusing. WICB ( or Gibson- one of the same ) keep putting out requirements to play for WI at every presented opportunity. Present contracted players and non contracted players for the WI team keep breaking them as they are presented. Gayle is and will be no exception. This "agreement" will be short lived, as players and Gayle are acting in their financial interest and future. Personally, I do not think that Gayle will ever play for the West Indies again. There is too much that happened between them, it will very uncomfortable for both parties. The time and money that the WICB is prepared to invest in Gayle will be money well spent in developing a new or some new prospect(s).

  • BigGeorgeMehemood on April 6, 2012, 16:01 GMT

Me give up on this Gayle saga..Me think him dont care to play for WI anymore. This soap opera need to stop with him..KICK him out along with Samuels, Bravo and all who dont want to play. WI team would do better without dem. Let dis same team play and dem will improve.

  • on April 6, 2012, 15:56 GMT

Gayle is the Bradman + Tendulkar combined of T20 cricket. If he keeps himself fit he will be ok to play all the T20 leagues he wants till he's fed up. But he should be encouraged to make a permanent name for himself in INTERNATIONAL cricket as the potential is there. Any board worth their salt would not have refused to select Gayle based on the whims and fancies of a sub standard coach like Otis Gibson who obviously has an inferiority complex since he has been unable to coexist peacefully with any West Indian player with the slightest hint of a reputation at the international level since he became coach. Just Ask Shiv Sarwan,& Jerome. If He expects to speak freely about players without seriously considering the situation they are in or the effect his words have it is only logical that he should be man enough to handle their attempts at self defense unless he himself is an exponent of the don-manship Professor Beckles spoke so fervently about during his speech last year.

  • ramps_wi on April 6, 2012, 15:38 GMT

Its about time that a window for IPL is created,so to prevent any issues with the teams around the world, in that way it will make it it more exciting and competitive. Furthermore, the players will make extra money. Long ago sports was about passion, now its about financial security.......WICB has to understand that and manage the players accordingly .... i am waiting to see the punishment handed out to marlon samuels and narine for going to IP

  • simonviller on April 6, 2012, 15:36 GMT

Every day Gayle is being forced to reveal his hand ,that he does not want to play test and lose out o the big dollars ,so this game may go on for a while yet . The other thing is that ,to be suing ,or being part of a suit ,against your employer [The W.I] would surely be a conflict of interest on his part , which creates a legal conundrum complicated by further gamesmanship .

  • on April 6, 2012, 15:18 GMT

Now,let us all look at these potential developments objectively. On the surface, this seems like fantastic news for the West Indies and world criket with the return of the CRICKETING MESSIAH,Mr Christopher Gayle,we all know he is a quality opener in ALL formats of the game, but questions will emerge about his potential return. What will his relationship be with some fellow players, captain and coaching staff, will it be uplifting or disruptive?,how much cricket will he be willing to play for the West Indies in the next couple of years?.My other question is,although most cricketing fans would love to see him playing in the world t-20 championship, how can he qualify to do so?.One of the prerequsites for playing any format of the game for the national side is to represent your teritory at first class,50 over or t-20 levels, which Mr Gayle only did for first class and 50 over level. He was out of favour with the board and played in the Big bash ,so how can he be selected for t-20 championships?

  • on April 6, 2012, 14:44 GMT

Long overdue. Gayle, we missed you. We are happy to watch and support WI cricket again. On another note, Pollard, Narine, Bravo, etc, all chose to play in the IPL over WI too. I cast no blame on them for that. Don't just point toes at Gayle. They are just trying to secure their future. Sarwan, we want you back too. Don't give up.

  • cric4life88 on April 6, 2012, 14:37 GMT

Guyzzz we cant impose our wishes on anyone, I'm sure he has also compromised to somewhat extent to come back into the side. One cannot say he should or shouldn't play IPL, BPL, ChampsL, etc. Its his choice. Its not like Australia where the culture is so different than in the Caribbean where money and cricket facility is not sufficient. I'm sure U.S has a couple of cricket grounds better than Caribbean. When they see their lifelong hard work has not been awarded properly in their country, who won't mind playing a month of cricket and get paid a million!! I wouldn't. Again I'm not saying he should or shouldn't play in leagues, but its natural to see players opting for the league game sometimes. I hope Sammy will find the way to keep Gayle comfortable on and off the field and vice verse. He's in good touch, I hope he takes this chance seriously and play few good years of cricket before he retires. The only guy who could break Shewag's record of highest ODI score is this guy!!

  • on April 6, 2012, 14:31 GMT

This is no deal. If Gayle Skips test matches during the English Summer than he has 3 ODI & 2 T`20 to play. What`s the fun then? WICB must consider Gayle as past & move ahead with young stars available. They must groom Barath, Simmons, Charles for the opening spot.

  • bigd.intl on April 6, 2012, 14:31 GMT

I really don't know why you people are implying that WI cricket is going to improve with GAyle. He has been there for a while now and we are bearly ranked over Bangladesh. As far as I am concerned he doesn't have WI cricket at heart. He is self centred. WI cricket got ran over by SA with Gayle and all the other big names. What this current team has is called discipline. Something Gayle doesn't have. He is always going to go where there is more money, glamour and fame. After being away for so long you would think he would be excited but no he prefers to play the IPL.

  • Stark62 on April 6, 2012, 14:29 GMT

The Windies should kick out players like Gayle, Pollard and Dwayne Bravo because they turned down the central contracts and that shows they aren't committed to international duty.

Sammy is doing his best and needs players that are willing to play for the Windies when called upon; not when they feel like it!

  • Pakistanvictorious on April 6, 2012, 13:43 GMT

Mr Gayle will be unavailable during the entire IPL, the champions league, the BBL, BPL etc every year. I think WI should kickout all those who prefer playing elsewhere than WI. They have a lot of talent, they need to concentrate on new players instead of Gayle type selfish players. Those who argue Gayle's return will improve the team should see the results when he was playing.

  • Malti65 on April 6, 2012, 12:43 GMT

Hope this will bring Gayle back to the mainstream cricket. Regarding prior commitments, i don't blame Gayle. After all he made all these commitments while the west indies cricket was not showing any interest in him. so he is right. Also there is no harm is taking care of your commercial interest. I believe many greate west indian cricket have retired very poor. so if he has some plans for the future, why not.

Gayle should leave IPL for his WI duties .. It is a day-light truth that IPL has lost its charm which it garnered in its 1st , 2nd seasons .. Even though I am a die-hard indian cricket fan , I still want him to concentrate on his WI duties rather than petty IPL ... Trust me , nobody in India is interested in watching overly hyped IPL atleast on TV , as too much cricket is being played these days .. Since WC final Indian team is constantly playing cricket match almost every second week .. and all of us are bored watching it .. IPL is surely killing the spirit and enthusiasm of cricket .. Daily new scams are coming out of IPL .. It is a fact that IPL and T20 is like McDonald's burgers which tastes good if you eat them once in a week but you can not survive on them for your entire life .. I would love Gayle playing in the same style as his seniors like Richards , Lara played and murdered World class bowlers around the world

  • jmcilhinney on April 6, 2012, 12:05 GMT

Assuming that it happens, it will be interesting to see what effect Gayle's return will have on the rest of the team. It may give them a big psychological lift or it may cause issues if there's some sort of resentment in some of the other players. For the sake of WI cricket I hope it's the former. I'm guessing that there will be a few small sighs of relief from Australia that this didn't happen a bit earlier because Gayle could have been the difference in the recently drawn ODI series. I'm not sure his impact will be as great in Test cricket but he can still make a significant difference.

Very poor from Gayle. Everyone can see he is the major problem in this setup - even now, he says he will choose IPL over a marquee test series vs Aus! He is only choosing to forego the county season because it won't pay his pockets!

  • RankPace on April 6, 2012, 11:05 GMT

I don't think Gayle has any interest in captaincy. Especially in view of he fact that he is making many times over more money in IPL/BPL/BBL etc. So i dont think he will accept any responsibilitty which can hamper his prospect with the various leagues. At least this move will solve the problem of one of the openers in all formats of the game.

Not happening, the guy has some serious ego issues!

As a WI fan I will have to say good news. But to be truthful I really don't know. I'll just keep my fingers crossed and my mouth closed. This guy is so confused who knows. He should just play T20 & ODI for the WI, & so give himself time to make more money. How about that.

It would be good to see Gayle back in the team. He is one of the most entertaining cricketers in the world, and would be brilliant for the Windies as the younger openers start their careers. It would be a shame if Sammy is replaced as captain, however. Whatever your opinion of Sammy as a player, there is no doubt that his captaincy and attitude has helped the Windies play better cricket over the last year or so.

I won't believe that this has been resolved until I see Gayle in Windies colours again. Both parties are stubborn here. Sad situation.

It would be pleasure to watch Gayle in action again. By the way he tackled the board speaks of his leadership qualities.

Samy should be allowed to continue as captain to build a new team and also gayle should only play in ODI's and T20I's and let the fiture generetion take charge of the WI test team..!He will be a quality addition in sammy's Worldcup T20 team.
