Australian captain Greg Chappell held his side together with a fighting 92 off 116 balls after their first two wickets had fallen for only 15 runs. Boycott, restored to England"s limited-overs side at the last moment, and Randall gave their side a good start before a middle-order collapse saw England lose four wickets for 14 inside five overs. With Australia scenting victory, Bairstow joined Brearley in a seventh-wicket stand of 22 to steer England home with an over to spare.
